0 Subject: Which Defense? GNB or NOR?

Pretty much looking at the free agents available in my league and trying to decide between Green Bay and New Orleans for team defense this week.

My Breakdown...

Green Bay at New York Giants
Brandon Jacobs is definitely out and Eli looks like he may be a game-time decision. If Eli is out, I really like this matchup. If he's in, then I don't because Ward still put up 89 yards in the game against Dallas. On the other hand, Green Bay pretty much shut down Philly, so they might be able to do the same against a short-handed Giants team... even if they do have Eli.

New Orleans at Tampa Bay
Yeah, the Saints got blown out in the opener, but I don't think it's a secret anymore that the Colts are a ridiculously good team, particularly on offense. Meanwhile, the return of the Yucs is upon us and Seattle torched them for 6 points allowed, 2 fumbles, and 5 sacks. This is more an "anti-Tampa Bay" play than a "the Saints are good" play.

Thoughts? Am I missing something here? Other defenses available with potentially favorable matchups are Dallas and Carolina.

Green Bay scares me. Seems that the offense isn't really good, so the D will be out there a lot. Plus, I wouldn't put much in last weeks win.

NOR...but like you said..not because they are that good. Rather, because the bucs are that bad.

this is a tough one KKB. Its a no brainer if Eli is out. Listening to NY media I'd think he will miss this one and maybe be back next week.

If he's playing I'd go with New Orleans.

Any chance you can pick up both defenses and wait til you see who's starting Sunday?

Okay, I'll be different.
I'd go with Green Bay even if Eli is playing.
I don't expect him to be 100%, and they sure played the Eagles tough last week.

Don't trust the New Orleans D at all.

Not really. Too many other players I'd rather not drop at this point. Sticking with 1 defense as long as possible.

just read an update that it appears as though Eli will play this week. If that's the case I say New Orleans.

the above advice can not be held against Farn and in no way can be assumed to be good advice. It will likely blow up in his face

Jason David will be suiting up for the Saints again, right? Enuff said, seriously. I'd go with GB between two.

The announcers took way too much pity on him that Thursday night. He's every bit as bad as he looked that night.

KKB - I am a diehard Cheesehead but I would like to think a realistic one. Here is my rundown of the GB defense.

Line: one of the strongest and deepest groups in the league. Early downs have Kampman (15 sacks LY, solid run defender) and Cullen Jenkins (strong, quick, hard to move) at end. The tackles rotate to keep them fresh: Johnny Jolly and Ryan Pickett start, and Corey Williams and Colin Cole come in for relief. Pickett is one of those 330-lb. run stuffers; he tires quickly and is no force in the pass rush. Jolly is athletic and tough; he batted down 3 of McNabb's passes last week. Williams is a solid run defender and an excellent pass rusher for at DT. Cole is just a guy. On passing downs they usually move Jenkins inside for Pickett or the other DT if Pickett's not in and bring in Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila; he's still pretty fast but isn't an elite pass rusher any more and he's a disaster against the run.

The LBs are AJ Hawk, Nick Barnett and Brady Poppinga. Generally outstanding against the run but just OK against the pass. Poppinga is miserable in coverage; he goes out when they play nickel. Barnett stays in the dime. The backups are weak across the board.

Corners are Al Harris and Charles Woodson, who are both over 30 but still strong one-on-one defenders. Harris hurt his elbow pretty bad last week but came back in after missing about a dozen plays and finished the game. Jarrett Bush is the nickel back; he's young and pretty much an average fifth DB, nothing special but not awful. They have three guys who have seen time as the dime back; they're all young, pretty much untested and fairly vulnerable isolated. If Harris or Woodson got seriously hurt GB would be in trouble.

Safeties are Nick Collins and Atari Bigby. Both hard hitters and terrific run support guys. Collins has improved in his two years as a starter and is now a solid average to slightly above cover FS. Bigby was a deep-bench backup last year who couldn't cover anyone; from what I've seen in the preseason and against the Eagles he may be the most improved player on the team. He did an excellent job covering both Smith and Westbrook; no passes defensed but no long completions and he made sure the short passes did not become big plays with sure tackling.

The Packers usually play quarters coverage and have Harris and Woodson bump and run with the outside WRs. They rely on the fact that the DL can usually create some pressure to avoid getting burned by deep post routes. LBs have to cover the TE on shorter routes and that could create problems if the Giants can manage to get Shockey isolated with Poppinga on early downs. Burress will also be a tough job, especially if the Giants ever use him in the slot, but I don't know if they do.

I really like what GB is trying to do with their D. IF all was even I'd say GB for sure. But Eli is playing nw and not sure how good he will be. If he can play close to his normal self well you saw what he did last week and with the Giants bad D, he will have to pass. I'm thinking Plax and Shockey could be big. Ward handled his business too. The TB O...enough said. I think I'd have to go NO this week given the circumstances. But if Eli is not ready he could turn it over and create points that way. Still would take my chances with the bad TB O.

I'm with GoatLocker and others who say Green Bay, even if Eli starts. I do think both will be okay starts, but reality in fantasy sports is that sacks and turnovers mean defensive points. I think GB gives you the best opportunity for those sacks and turnovers.

PAs and YAs can easily trump those sacks and TOs though. It's a tough call. GB is the better D, but it's a tough call this week.

Green Bay...easy. I am a diehard Chicago Bears fan and I dislike the Packers as much as anyone, but I give respect when its due.

The Packers have one of the deeper d-lines (even though pickett stinks) in the entire NFL with the addittion of Justin Harrell, and feature one of the best linebacking trios in the NFL: pro bowl caliber (barnett, hawk) and one stud (hodge) on defense with one of the better CB tandems (Harris, Woodson) going against a chicken shit NYG offense. It features a beat up Eli Manning or *gasp* Lorenzen combined with Derrick Ward as your feature back...LOL!

Despite his stellar performance last week vs a chicken shit CB, everybody knows Plaxico Burress is lazy. I can promise you unlike the Cowboy's secondary, Al Harris will be extremely physical with him. Consider This: From 2001 to 2005, Hines Ward has caught about 80% of passes thrown his way every year, whether from Kordell Stewart, Tommy Maddox, or Ben Roethlisberger. However, Plaxico Burress, playing with the same QBs as well as Eli Manning has never caught more then 60% of his intended passes. Coincidence? I think not. Laziness? Yes.

To me, that translates into Burress getting shut down vs. a physical and hard hitting Packers secondary and then the Giants really wont have any other "go to" guys. Shockey is overrated, period. He gets the hype b/c he runs his mouth, but every year somehow Chris Cooley tops him without getting much hype at all. Besides, he'll have to deal with those GB Linebackers in addittion to the hard hitting Packers safeties.

As for the Saints, I will go out on a limb and predict the Bucs to even win the game. I really think the Saints are a team closer to 8-8 then what they were last season. Remember, they led the league in victories (7) by less then 7 points. They remind me alot of the 2001 Chicago Bears who went 13-3 and stumbled the next season. I don't think lightning strikes twice and they will fall back (a la the 2006 preseason Super Bowl Champs - Carolina Panthers). Saints suffer a heartbreaker to a hungry Buccaneers team.

[12] YAs don't count in our league, so that's making me lean towards GNB at this point. Scoring is PA, Sack, Safety, INT, FumR, TD, and BlkKick.

I'd still lean toward NO. Who on TB, is a legit "threat" to score many points?

KKB, just remember: if it smell like a rat and it look like a rat, by golly it's a rat!

I'd go with GB. TB actually has a chance to score since they have Garcia and Galloway and Galloway can still burn Jason David on those very hard to defend fly routes the Colts were running on him.

Well I haven't smelled any rats lately (except if you count that one at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue) but I'd still go with the Pack.

Yeah, I pretty much went with the consensus of GNB. The Giants were hurting too much to pass that up.

Now I have to figure out if I want to keep them against a dangerous (though obviously turnover prone) SDG squad or go after the likes of WAS (anti-NYG), NYG (anti-WAS), TEN (decent and anti-NOR), or TAM. Yippee! :)

Good thing you did, Jason David was in full effect vs mr. galloway this week. New Orleans = OVERRATED! (I stay hating on the Saints) Mainly b/c everywhere I read has them ranked ahead of my beloved Bears in preseason power rankings and season predictions.

I feel so bad for Raiders fans. They fight and claw their way back both games this year, and just find a way to piss it away at the end.

Yeah, I'm in a league that WAY overvalues defenses. To the point that they select defenses not named Chicago or Baltimore before the 6th round is over. So, rather than jumping at a defense, I figured I'd just hit the free agent market each week. I'm hoping to find a team I can stick with for most of the season, but we'll see.

Washington is your best bet. They may not get alot of sacks due to their weak DL...but they do have a very physical secondary and top notch linebackers in a proven system.

I think a beat up NYG team will struggle to find holes in the running game and Eli is due for a multiple INT game. Now if the Eagles blow them out tonight, I will eat my words :)

That's pretty much what I'm thinking as well. If WAS does well tonight (in my league's point system), I'll pick them up.
