I believe I was out of the States when this happened but exactly why did S.D. get rid of Schottenheimer and hire Turner? Was it because of money?
From what I understand, Turner is a fine offensive coordinator but it seems like he is a complete bust at coaching. I guess not every great mind is adept at taking the head coaching responsibility. |

I think it boiled down to a power play: AJ Smith wanted a new coach because he had had some disagreements with Shottenheimer. I remember there were rumblings of disagreement when Cleo Lemon was traded to Miami, for instance. The firing came at an unusual time (after it seemed Marty might be safe for another year).
Anyway, it's almost sad to see how far that team has fallen. I bet you could count on one hand the number of prognosticators that saw that one coming.

Clearly, it was because of his record as a head coach.
The Chargers were just tired of having such high expectations.

He must be such an annoying person that regardless of his winning ways teams just want to get rid of him. Maybe he whines too much or causes too much drama.

I was talking about Marty. No clue why anyone would hire Norv to be anything but an OC.

RE: TB
hahahaha I'd expect that from a Raider fan. I really think Marty Schottenheimer is one of the better coaches this game has seen. Its just unfortunate that "Martyball" will ultimately keep him out of the Hall of Fame. He has improved every team and situation he went to and when he left, the teams have been much worse.
As to the original post, Motley Crue is correct in saying it was a power struggle in which AJ Smith ultimately won. Rumors were flying that the chargers were going to clean house before the 14-2 season, and after they lost in the playoffs sh*t hit the fan and AJ Smith won. I tell you this, if it keeps up, I expect Pete Carroll to be the next head coach and GM of San Diego.

As Jay Leno pointed out, the Chargers decided to replace a coach who couldn't win playoff games with one who couldn't win regular ones.

I would think you wouldn't expect to hear this from a Raider fan, because I agreed that he has gotten the job done, hence winning ways.
But, there has to be a reason that Cleveland, KC, Washington, and SD all let him go. Cleveland - he takes them to the playoffs his last four years (last 3 are double digit winning seasons) and gets fired (and they have like one playoff appearance since then - dumbasses) KC - 6 double-digit winning seasons, 7 play-off appearances. KC makes money and sells out games. I'll never believe it's an organization serious about winning championships. Even so, he was chased out of town and and they've had one or two good seasons since. I remember the 13-3 year where Vermeil lost in their first play-off game. Washington - He was chased out of town after one season because Danny wanted Spurrier. Great idea. Almost as great as bringing back Gibbs. SD - One of the worst franchises in NFL history full of fair-weather fans. How easily the forgot the recent Riley and Gilbride years. Let's put this into perspective. They've only been to the playoffs 5 times in the last 25 years and Marty got them there two of those times.
I read about all the power struggle issues, but I'm telling you, there has to be more. For Marty to continue to be chased out of these towns he has to have some type of annoying character flaw.

TB, two great posts there...i was just breaking your balls about being a raider fan :)
While I do agree to a point about his "whining too much"...but I also think that the media and fanbase might have some influence about his inability to win "the big ones". Also, there are two massive egos that run a football team. The head coach & GM. Both want their share of success and credit. Although Al Davis means well, if he doesnt like the way things go, its his way or the highway. AJ Smith is widely regarded as a total bully. I doubt that meshed well with Schottenheimer
I think Marty is too old school. Like Davis, its his way or the highway and my guess is that AJ Smith made a couple moves to piss him off. Ironically, the beginning of the end was the Cleo Lemon to Miami trade. That really pissed Schottenheimer off b/c he wanted to keep lemon. But Schottenheimer is a guy you never want to cross if you work with him b/c he seems stubborn as a mule.
Well I tell you this, Marty's value has never been higher. The guy is a proven winner in the regular season and brings a toughness to every team he coaches. While it might not be dynamic in the playoffs, the formula works. Whats funny is if you look at his coaching tree he produced Bill Cowher, Herm Edwards, Tony Dungy, & Cam Cameron who all, besides Cameron, have produced super bowl contending teams.
As for a team that I think he fits the best...gotta be the Minnesota Vikings. Good foundation on defense, solid O-Line and a total stud at the runningback position (Peterson). To me, that screams Martyball. If there is one thing that proves to be true, he will run the ball and run it well. He'd be a certain upgrade over Brad Childress who is the new Norv Turner. Also watch Jacksonville, Cleveland, maybe even St. Louis.

rumors floating around re Reid in Philly too. Since Philly seems to be reluctant at best, to have "quality" WRs for McNabb, I have to wonder if Marty wouldnt be a consideration for them as well. (However, I'd LOVE to see him go to Minn!!)

Interesting theory there sarge. Everything I am reading is Jon Gruden who is a lame duck coach (dont quote me on that) in Tampa this year. The minute Reid supposedly bolts, it would not surprise me to see them make a run at Gruden who'se emphasis on the West Coast offense makes him a easy fit to continue the success of the Philadelphia Eagles. Also, given what we were discussing earlier, how would he mesh with Joe Banner and co regarding personnel decisions???
Additionally, I dont think Westbrook is the type of RB that fits a Schottenheimer profile. He loves those backs who can pound the ball up the middle…I remember him saying his favorite play is 38 power and he’ll run it till the day he dies...Regardless, any feature back in his offense is fantasy football worthy. Last, it would not surprise me one bit if he was the Vikings coach next season…and as a Bears fan, the thought of facing Adrian Peterson & Martyball worries me b/c of our small defensive front.

Huh, Reid leave Philly? They'll get rid of McNabb before Reid goes. He is 100% in sync with the owner, Jeff Lurie. You gotta be kidding me.

from profootballtalk.com (yes TB, I know I drink the PFT Kool-Aid)
A.J. Daulerio of PhillyMag.com has some details as to the rampant rumors that Eagles coach Andy Reid might pack it in with the team after eight-plus years on the job.
Here's what Daulerio has to say: "It's been a constant rumor all year, but after Sunday night's loss to the Giants, sources close to Andy Reid and the team say there's a strong possibility Reid may get off the sidelines sooner than expected. All year, Reid's family troubles have been taking a noticeable toll, and many of his players are biding their time until Big Red makes an announcement. With Marty Mornhinweg already assuming much of the offense, Reid's a lame-duck coach at this point, just poking around on the sidelines to keep his mind off of his woes. The likely scenario is inserting Mornhinweg in the coach's seat so Reid can ride out the rest of his contract as Executive Vice President of Football Operations, leaving him more time with his fractured family."
Daulerio's article suggests that the move could come as soon as this week, since the Eagles are on a Week Five bye.
Though we haven't heard that anything immediate could happen, the pervasive talk in league circles is that Reid's return for 2008 is, at best, a toss-up.

That is a great article and truly answers the questions surrounding the Dan Diego Chargers decisions to get rid of Martyball.
I wish I can understand why Norv was given another chance, but I'm sure it will reference Bill Belicheck's career.
