0 Subject: Urban Meyer's Crazy Play

I'm watching the UF/LSU game and just saw Urban Meyer's crazy play where the entire line was shifted to the right side of the field. It resulted in a sack by LSU and, to me, that seemed the obvious result. Here's how they lined up:

WR = Wide Receiver, QB = QB, OL = Offensive Lineman, DL = Defensive Lineman, D = Defender

---------------------------------------------
| | | | |
| |WR1 | D1| |
| | | | |
| WR2| D2| | |
| | DL | | |
| | DL | | D |
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
| QB | C | | |
| WR3| | | |
| | DL | | |
| | |D3 | |
| | DL | | |
| | DL | | |
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
| WR4 |OL | D4 | |
| |OL | | |
| |OL | | |
| |OL | | |
| |WR5 | D5 | |
| | | | |
---------------------------------------------

I numbered the WR and D in terms of how they ended up matched up. WR1, WR4, and WR5 basically ran streaks straight up. WR2 ran an up and out and WR3 went the same direction with an up and in.

The commentators took the time to show the replay and point out that WR5 finally came open when D4 and D5 both tended towards coverage of WR4, but by that point, the QB was scrambling away from three DLs.

Granted, the QB in question is Tim Tebow and he can run quite well, but three DLs, whose job it is to get to the QB, aren't going to have THAT tough of a time when there's only a C to try to hang on to them.

But the really amazing part is that the commentators said that LSU got the sack because they "made a mistake" and didn't line up properly.

So my question becomes, why was how they were lined up considered a mistake? I would think that if you're going to leave ANY QB that wide open, you're going to line your DLs in front of the single C and go after the QB. Is it really a mistake to not just line up your DL across from the OL no matter how ridiculous the offensive set is?

Also, what would be the point in the offense running this play other than to hope that the DL bite and line up against the OL and leave a wide open lane for Tebow? Obviously, any defense that did that would deserve the resulting huge play by Tebow, but what defense would do that? Tebow is clearly the largest threat on the field, so why would a coach leave him THAT wide open to the defense and why would the defense ever NOT take advantage of that opening?

Quick screen to WR4 with an entire convoy of guys blocking for him and no defenders in sight should have been Floridas answer. Florida screwed it up worse.

I can somewhat see that, but even then you have 2 DL that can run in front of the pass. It would have to be an absolutely perfect lob. I suppose a lob to WR5 would work better, but it just seems like there's more chance for things to go wrong with that play than for things to go right.

Nah no lob. Just snap and throw it immediately.

this is also similar set up they us for the swinging gate play on extra pionts though i think i have only actually seen it run like twice anywhere.

spurrior use to run a similiar set up call emory and henry but the line men would be 2 each split out wide with just the center and qb in the middle. i guess the school william and henry, i think, ran this offense to like a division 3 title.

I think it just points to Urban Meyer's arrogance in thinking he can do whatever he wants. Given the way UF has played all season, the ball was either going to be some creative draw play to Tebow or a jailbreak type screen to Percy Harvin...now I ask you this (for any of you lucky son of a guns who have a DVR and actually recorded the game...) which WR was Percy Harvin in your diagram??

My guess would be (and I could be wrong) that it was first look to harvin and use that whole "convoy" as a smoke and mirror and if not open create something yourself. Whats even more surprising is that they didnt even call a time out. The whole play looked doomed from the beginning b/c of its organization, or lack thereof!
