in a push for the playoffs?

The question, a "strategic" one, comes from a discussion in another thread.

While I agree entirely for the need to have depth on your FF roster, particularly this year from the way things have gone, there has to come a point where it becomes essential to trade some depth for more productive starters, or your playoff hopes will vanish.

We're pretty much at the mid-point for FF. If your team were say 2 or maybe 3 games back from being the last squad into your playoffs, is it time or are you patient for another week or two, to swap out that productive player on your bench for a more productive player in another roster slot?

I think we'd all agree, that missing the playoffs while having depth on your bench, accomplishes nothing for you. Nor, does making the playoffs with a roster full of ER candidates. So, what is your general approach in determining when, you pull the trigger?

I think that depth is very important obviously through the bye weeks. When you have gotten by your big bye weeks, what good does it do to have a great bench. We don't know what will happen from week to week. If your players are playing hurt, then keep the depth at that position. Other than that, if you can make a good deal, and it would help you get into the playoffs, make it.

I've never had a "great bench". Once in a while you may have one useful chip sitting out because of lineup limitations, but in my experience I never feel very comfortable with my depth.

If you feel your team has truly valuable players that you can afford to move, I'd look to trade them for guys that have underachieved but you think have a good chance to improve. Always look to sell high and buy low in this game.

Always look to sell high and buy low in this game.

I don't totally agree with that statement. I agree with selling high on overvalued players that aren't likely to maintain their success, but selling say a Randy Moss high might not make the most sense. On the other hand, buying someone like Bulger might not be such a great buy low either.

I think depth is crucial to success over the long haul, but there does come a time when just making the playoffs can force your hand. Late in the year though it becomes pretty hard to help yourself by moving your 'surplus'. Most likely if your surplus is worth moving you wouldn't be struggling to make the playoffs. Moving a 'stud' for two players where you are weak might be the better way to help your chances.

I think you ditch the depth when the bye weeks pass. Atthat point
if you can do a two for one to upgrade a position, you take it. I feel
100 times worse if I fail to play the bench player when he racks up
more points than the regular starter. Make your life simple, ditch
the bench guys that might cause you to lose sleep.

Now when I say ditch, I mean dangle out in a trade to shore up
positions. Keep-away is as good a strategy as any in FF.
