Anybody see this coming?

Falcon coach leaves team hanging out to dry

Pretty disturbing set of circumstances here. I know Petrino came down with the intent of having Michael Vick around but do you just up and quit at the first decent opportunity whenever adversity hits? This man should never be allowed to be near an NFL stadium again.

And NFL owners have a great track record of letting coaches work through adversity, right?

As with most things in life, you get the respect you give.

Still, as a college AD, I wouldn't have hired him. It's clear he's going to be "looking out for #1" and I think Arkansas needs someone who will stick around for a while. And aparently I'm not the only one who thinks Arkansas should be wary of Petrino.

I dont know that Cowher would be interested. I think maybe Marty Schottenheimer would be a good fit for Atlanta. Whether he can get the job done there, would remain to be seen.

Leftwich/Harrington at QB, I think is an issue Atl NEEDS to address and quickly. Though a new coach would probably be first, so as to get a fit between the coaches system and the QBs ability.

I think any College team that hires a coach has to always wonder when they are going to leave, its just a fact of life.

Maybe Petrino finally had enough when Roddy White broke out the Free Michael Vick shirt tribute.

What Atlanta needs to do is get a veteran QB that is available, maybe Pennington, and then draft one of the talented QB's available in this year's draft, Matt Ryan, Brian Brohm, Colt Brennan, and Andre Woodson. In that order.

And then hire Marty Schottenheimer. He has a good history of getting bad teams better in a quick way.

By what right does the owner of the Atlanta Falcons have to get "miffed" at Petrino. It's not like Petrino was unemployed and not under contract when he bolted Louisville for Atlanta.

At least he waited until the season was over in Louisville, MBJ.

Maybe MBJ, because Blank had asked him twice that week (once earlier that day) about his plans, and Petrino's response was that he was returning to Atlanta next season. I dont know of anyone who likes being lied to, and I for one, reserve the right to be miffed when someone lies to my face. I'd not be in any hurry to deny Blank that same right.

I think it would be very ironic if the Falcons drafted Brohm at this point.

This is just another example of a college coach not being able to hack it in the NFL. The bottom line is winning, and the personalities you are dealing with arent necesarrily going to follow you just because you are the coach. I also dont think college gameplans work in the NFL. I think it takes a few years of working in the NFL to understand that you have to change things up and make things more complex.

All that being said, Petrino really didnt have a QB he could work with... and he at least hasnt done as bad as Cam Cameron.

Petrino's first stint in the NFL came 1999-2001, as he spend two seasons as the quarterbacks coach and a third as offensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite Jacksonville finishing last in the AFC Central in 2001 and statistically having only a mediocre offense, Petrino was praised as an offensive mastermind. Tom Coughlin, then head coach of the Jaguars, called Petrino “the best play-caller I've ever been around.”

Lets use any of us in this example. I like my job and my situation and my boss, but if something better came along, I'm definitely gonna listen! And if my boss asks me where I'll be in a year, I sure as hell ain't gonna tell him I don't know!

I would. (and have) If I like where I'm at, it's gonna take a lot to make me consider changing. BUt I am NOT, going to lie to my current employer. If I'm looking and they ask, I tell tehm, "I'm less than 100% satisfied here and yes, I have some feelers out." This has in the past resulted in termination (gee...big surprise) and it has led to discussions wherein my concerns were resolved and I stayed. *shrug* All depends on the quality of your employer.

J, but would say that you are deeply committed to the company and have no plans on leaving? Which is what was reported that Petrino said to Blank.

How long until a sports book opens wagers on coaches expected stays. What is the O/U on Petrino at Arkansas? 3.5 years?

As an Arkansas alum, while I'm happy the Hogs nabbed a high-profile guy (especially after being spurned by a couple of other possibilities), I'd be shocked if Petrino stays more than three years. I just hope they're in better shape when he leaves than they are now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Louisville fan here. Petrino shopped his services the entire time he was here. His word is garbage, he tried an end run to get Tubberville's job at Auburn, after Tommy gave him his break that lead to his hiring at Louisville. No offense to Razorback fans, but watching him do the pig sooey thing at 11:30 last night after sneaking out of Atlanta was surreal. He snuck out in the middle of the night after lying to the owner. his boss. I miss the success he brought to our program, but he's a scumbag, and I wish him all the worst.

I wonder if he wrote the note that got left in the player's lockers or if someone did it for him. Between not evening facing the team, since they probably would have beaten him, to speaking to the assistants for 10 seconds, I how many bridges he burned. I guess as long as he keeps winning he'll always get another job, but is your reputation really worth that?

The problem is, coaches do this all the time, and it seems as though the only ones who remember it ever happening down the road are the fans of the team that get burned, and then maybe a few diehard sports fans.

We're gonna see alot more of this in contracts i bet...

Petrino's five-year contract with Arkansas pays him $2.85 million per year and includes a $2.85 million buyout if he leaves to take a college or pro job during the first four years. It also includes an agreement that Petrino not leave to accept a job with another SEC West school.

Wow, that's pretty restrictive, he can't take a job at 5 other schools.

If I'm the AD at a BCS school I would rather write a clause that says, here is my dream job, I can only leave to take it. Now the dream job might be more than 1 school, but it shouldn't be anyone who will pay me more money.

I can understand someone saying I love my job, but if my alma mater comes calling, I'm interested.
