Congrats to Slackjawed Yokel, winner of the playoffs in the RIFC. Final Standings

This thread is for a recap of all of the 2007 RIFC leagues, including the the AAA leagues and the AA league. Any manager is welcome to post any post-season reflections on the season - what went well, what didn't, what lessons were learned, etc.

QL Commissioners - thanks for your work during the season. Your diligence is appreciated. Please post your final standings (regular season and playoffs) here, so that I can easily find them next summer when invitations and qualifications for 2008 need to be prepared.

I got to be happy with the way things worked out, cause no matter what, I got my invite back for next year (4th straight year in the RIFC). One of these years, I may get past the semi-finals, but hey, that's the game.

How did I end up getting my team into the playoffs with a 23-3 record (on an 18 game winning streak, heading into the playoffs)? Mainly… the draft. The draft landed me: ADP (who I traded to get Portis), in the 4th round. Also, Wes Welker in the 11th round was the type of "steal of the draft", that gave me a consistently strong WR corps (#2, 4, 6 WRs). They only really faltered me in the playoffs.

My biggest mistake: people warned me… and I told them they were wrong, but Baltimore D really didn't perform to the spot where I drafted them. Luckily Jax D was a solid backup, and a better choice for the playoffs schedule wise.

How did the old injury bug go… well overall, I got to be really happy. Jay Cutler's injury came arround when I had already picked up Vince Young as backup, and Rex Grossmans demotion didn't hurt me all that much. Fragile Fred avoided injury, and I used him to trade for the afforementioned VY. Urlacher's back caused a little stress, but he proved himself worth his draft spot once again (who says he's overated?). Patrick Willis' hand slowed him down somewhat, but hey, I'm still not complaining, he's a beast. Brian Dawkins proved to be easily replaceable when he went down. The biggest injury that probably affected me, is that one that I feel must have happened but nobody is talking about. How did Keith Bulluck only manage 66 solo's over the first 16 weeks? (shakes his head)

How did the old waiver wire work out for me this year? Well, I didn't find anybody that consistently started for me. I did however find some excellent backups should one of my starters go down to injury. I think that's one thing that my team had a lot of… depth. Favorite finds: Roddy White, Warrick Dunn, Kolby Smith, Jon Beason.

congratulations to Slackjawed Yokel for the RIFC title. you got a bit lucky in the playoffs, but thats the game.
congratulations to IAC: you dominated this league all season. too bad you had one "suboptimal" week in the playoffs.
Thanks to Guru for bringing this Rotuguru Invitational Leagues to life. after a stint in Baseball and Football I am currently in the hunt to reach the RIHC. Guru - do you know how many managers competed against you in all your 3 major sports Invitational Leagues?

back to my season: I don't know what happened this year. last in RIFC, last in the Auction League. that definitely hurts.

looking at my RIFC draft I got not very lucky:
1 Maroney (missed 4 games, one 100yd game, only 2TDs in our regular season, thanks to that damn NE passing game)
2 Edge (was ok for this draft spot if the RBs would have been the top producers this year. it was nice to see him as the top RB after 2 weeks)
3 Driver (another 1000yd season, but only 2TD all season. when I look at Favre's numbers I still can't believe it. what happened?)
4 Bulger (11 games, with 4 games below 3pts, had to replace him with a combo of Huard and Schaub because Delhomme went to IR early)
5 B Edwards (had to trade him after a monster-start to get a starter at QB (Schaub) and RB (Morris) because of injuries to Bulger/Delhomme and Maroney, Edwards was huge all season and both players I got were not starters for long. long-term a very bad trade for me)
6 Heap (went down in week 4 and is still questionable. a wasted roster spot for most of the season)
7 S Holmes (was ok for this draft spot, but not as spectecular as hoped. he also missed a few weeks because of various injuries)
8-12 IDPs (I don't want to name them all but they were not worth their draft position. Jason P Taylor had the problem of a losing season in MIA, Witherspoon was ok, but the rest sucked or got injured early and had to be replaced)

my steal of the draft: Nate Burleson (#5 WR, #31 overall in round 17, a valuable return-man all season in addition to his 7 receiving TD as a #3 receiver)

my real problem were the early injuries at all positions (Bulger, Delhomme, Maroney, Holmes, Heap, Vilma) and that the passing attack of a few teams (NE, DAL, IND, CLE) was not from this earth this year. this was killing me week-for-week. I guess this will shake up the draft next year so that a few QBs and WRs will be taken in the first 2 rounds. this will definitely get more interesting and needs not only a good preparation, but agains some luck next year. I can only hope for that in one of the qualifying leagues.

side note:
2005: saw around 5 NFL games all year - promoted to RIFC
2006: saw 2 NFL games all year (opener, superbowl) - out in the RIFC semifinals
2007: saw at least 2 NFL games every week - last place in RIFC
according to this, I should better turn off the TV on Sunday, or at least watch NBA or Nascar instead of the NFL to be successful again.

here's more-or-less what i posted in another thread, regarding my victory in the RIFC AAA2 championship game.

my draft went as follows:

1.06 Joseph Addai RB
2.09 Chad Johnson WR
3.06 Marion Barber RB
4.09 Lee Evans WR
5.06 Tony Romo QB
6.09 LaMont Jordan RB
7.06 Jerricho Cotchery WR
8.09 Jason Witten TE
9.06 Eli Manning QB
10.09 Isaac Bruce WR
11.06 Kevin Jones RB
12.09 James Farrior LB
13.06 Brian Dawkins DB
14.09 Denver Broncos DEF
15.06 Arnaz Battle WR
16.09 Brian Leonard RB
17.06 Mark Anderson DL
18.09 Shaun Phillips LB
19.06 Asante Samuel DB
20.09 Bradie James LB
21.06 Craig Davis WR
22.09 Tony Hunt RB
23.06 David Akers K
24.09 Kevin Walter WR

looking at that, i don't even consider it an especially strong draft, even if i do recollect getting most of the guys i targeted in the early rounds.

Chad Johnson was a disappointment, Lee Evans was a flop, but i think the trio of Barber, Romo, and Witten were crucial picks for me.

i did have some decent waiver wire pickups. i grabbed the Tampa defense in week 4, and rarely looked back. i got Mason Crosby in week 5, and until the very last week of the season when i grabbed Jason Hanson, he stayed my starter. looking back, Hanson was also my week 7 fill in when Crosby had a bye.

i was able to get Thomas Howard in week 2, and he remained a starter the rest of the year. i picked up Justin Fargas in week 3...and dropped him in week 4. in his stead i picked up Ryan Grant in week 4...and dropped him a few minutes later...

having an abudance of running backs really helped me. i ended up trading two of them - Brian Leonard (my 16th round draft pick) and Kenny Watson (a waiver wire pickup in week 6) - for Patrick Crayton and Roddy White respectively, who made for very strong WR3s and helped fill the gap when my other WRs weren't performing.

this is one of those leagues where i feel like i won because the draft went my way, i stayed more or less injury-free, i picked up some key players through waivers and trades, and, quite frankly, there's a lot of luck involved in all of those things.

Still - Electroman - who won the regular season crown - had a spectacular first five rounds that really almost won him the season, that really only included one pick i wouldn't considering to have an amazing season:

1.01 LaDainian Tomlinson RB
2.14 Terrell Owens WR
3.01 Tom Brady QB
4.14 DeAngelo Williams RB
5.01 Randy Moss WR

save for one snowy day and the fact that Tom Brady finally came back down to earth, he might have won the whole shooting match...

First off, I would like to give congrats to all the winners of their respective leagues and championships.

Here's how my draft went:

1.01 LaDainian Tomlinson RB
2.14 Terrell Owens WR
3.01 Tom Brady QB
4.14 DeAngelo Williams RB
5.01 Randy Moss WR
6.14 Brian Urlacher LB
7.01 Kellen Winslow TE
8.14 LenDale White RB
9.01 Takeo Spikes LB
10.14 Chris Hope DB
11.01 Cato June LB
12.14 Alex Smith QB
13.01 Drew Bennett WR
14.14 Joe Horn WR
15.01 Justin Smith DL
16.14 San Francisco 49ers DEF
17.01 Correll Buckhalter RB
18.14 Nate Kaeding K
19.01 Nate Clements DB
20.14 Dwayne Jarrett WR
21.01 Kamerion Wimbley LB
22.14 Alex Brown DL
23.01 Rashean Mathis DB
24.14 Eric Johnson TE

The reason that I was able to win the regular season crown was the draft working out. And having the first pick helps, because you got LT Honestly, taking Brady was maybe a stretch at that point. It was between him and Brees, but I had read in a lot of places that Brady and Moss would have a good season together. That may be the understatement of the year. LT/TO/ and Moss when on their game, score TD's, and they all payed off this year. In fact, my 7 of my top 8 really had solid years, each helped me win during the year.

As for the waiver wire, I got Bobby Engram, Donte Stallworth, Roddy White(who I traded for K. Watson the week he had the big game) and the Dallas D. The second RB and third WR were what really concerned me, but I was able to get great weeks from Engram and Stallworth. And White came through as a solid #2 back.

Me and Tree kinda pulled away from the pack, and in the regular season, we each beat each other once, during big bye weeks. I was really hoping to face him again with the full lineups, but bad weather in Clevland and New England slowed down my players and I couldn't recover.

I knew before that IDP's were important to a solid team, but it really got more impressed on me this year. Clements and Urlacher came up big in certain games. Will be certain to read up more on these positions prior to next years draft.

He stopped managing it due to problems with AOL -- which no
one's suggestions could fix. He was the leader at the time as he
had Owens, Moss, Welker, Crumpler, Daniels, Gore, Palmer and a
host of other really good guys. I gave many offers of help to set his
lineup via email, but he declined, so he quit. Guru managed the
team for the rest of the season to maintain quality competition, but
he was DQ'd from the playoffs.

oops I typed it wrong -- It's DONKEY HUNTERS not Conkey
Hunters...

RE Judy...

For the RIFC league, it's built off of these requirements:

"The list includes the top 6 teams from last year's RIFC, 3 teams from each of last year's AAA leagues, the winner of the AA league playoffs, and me. For each AAA league, I selected the playoff winner plus the teams seeded #1 and #2 in the playoffs. For one league, I also took the #3 playoff seed, since one of the top two teams won the playoffs."

If you do indeed get invited up to this leauge, you won't be able to commish, as that's Guru's responsability. The forming of the AAA/AA leagues will be soon to come no doubt.

Aha -- so once RIFC big boys get their slot, the rest of us fall
into place -- no problem there.

I just want to make sure I get into an RIFC league -- I don't
honestly care if it is AAA or AA, though the AAA folks are more
used to the process. I did like being a commish though...
