Three-network simulcast! |

The NFL really missed a chance to increase sales of the NFL network throughout New England by giving in on this one.
For the rest of us, the fallout from the writers' strike continues to plague us...

Meanwhile Fox is showing Cops and America's Most Wanted. Interesting!
I am surprised that the NFL didn't make CBS/NBC bid for the right so only one of them would have the rights to simulcast it.

PD, I think the local networks normally play the games. Unless it was an exception, Fox aired the Steelers/Browns game that was on a Thursday night last season.

I'm just surprised that the NFL caved in on this. When was the last simulcast.....Super Bowl I????
Gotta feeling that Fox isn't involved because.....................
Can you imagine if New England is undefeated and in the Super Bowl? Will Fox share their coverage??? LOL I don't think so!

saw this somewhere...
How long until someone invents the Bryant Gumbel drinking game? Maybe someone already has done so.
Take one drink every time he misidentifies a player.
Take two drinks every time he misidentifies a team.
Take one drink every time he says someone “appears to have a first down” when there’s simply no question at all that it is a first down because the player is a good 2-3 yards beyond the line to gain.
Take two drinks and pound head on table when he reads from an obviously prepared script during player introductions and misses the snap because he takes too long to do the intros.
Take three drinks when he can’t figure something out that is obvious to anyone with more than a rudimentary knowledge of football (an obvious false start, a timeout called, a challenge flag thrown, etc.).
Take five drinks and throw remote at TV when he says a field goal is good when the ball is obviously short and the officials are making the “no good” signal. (This actually happened a few weeks ago.)

Love the computer though:).

NFL Network is awful precisely because of Gumbel. Not only does he have a horrible voice for television, he is a terrible game announcer.

Gumble is horrible...I like Collingsworth; but they've got to get another play by play guy.
IMHO I thought the MNF team was very good ( I know a lot of folks don't like TK,but a lot of people didn't like Cosell either)... Madden/ Michaels is starting to get a teensy bit tired; but the best team may be Buck/Aikman....and I don't even like the Cowboys.

I believe this had a little something to do with it: Battle Lines - Jason Cole
Correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't CBS get the rights to the game b/c a AFC team is visiting a NFC team?
Also, NBC owns exclusive rights to all games played in primetime on the weekend per their contract with the NFL...
Collinsworth - the Rolls Royce of announcers. He could do both color and play-by-play.
Aikman is really good but I could do without Buck. He should stick to baseball.
I like Gus Johnson. He gets so excited, like the Lee Evans catch for the 80 yard TD vs the Jets back in week 8.
Still, the best broadcasting tadem in all sports: Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson. SEC on CBS...3pm every Saturday.

There seems to be a growing consensus this year that Collinsworth is a top NFL announcer (color man). I agree with it, and think he is. I don't think he'll ever be an A announcer -- a little too understated for that -- but he could be B++ for a long time.
I post this because opinions about most NFL announcers (and especially color men) differ greatly among fans in my experience. I don't find it unusual for some guy to be rated at the top and at the bottom by different groups of equally knowledeable fans.
Dissenters on Collinsworth?

GO(#6) - yeah, I thought about making a drinking game during last week's broadcast. His repeated use of the terms 'seemingly', 'apparently', and 'unofficially' was particularly annoying. Unofficially, Romo now has three touchdown passes on the day after what would appear to be a 30 yard pass play. Maybe after 6 drinks that would be tolerable.

I don't mind Collinsworth, but can't stand Costas and Olberman. Costas is just plain sappy and Olberman is just a smart ass.
My favorite play by play guy is Al Micheals, but as far as i'm concerned Madden brings the whole thing down a notch. John's time has come and gone.

Kevin Harlan should do football... I love when he gets fired up when an NBA player gets particularly hot.
My favorite last year? "Mikki Moore is an ASSASAIN!!!"

RE 18: Kevin Harlan doing college ball is the best. I remember this moment from last year and I remember talking with a friend before the game saying the tourney doesn't start until Harlan utters his famous line.

My favorite play by play guy is Gus Johnson. He's awesome during March Madness and for football games. I hope CBS starts to give him better football games to cover as he gains experience.
Gumble drives me through the roof. How about taking a shot everytime he makes a smarta$$ comment and makes it seem like his opinion is superior. The guy is clueless and about as bad as I've seen for play by play. Twice last week he also said that it was a 1st down even though it was clear the guy was short. Collinsworth is just a big wimp too as you never see him have the nerve to correct Gumble.

Speaking of ESPN's MNF team...
It's bothered me all season long and this is as good a time as any...
To Mike Turico: Not every play is the most spectacular play in the history of ever. It's OK to get a little excited when something great happens, but needing two and gaining three on second down at mid-field in the third quarter is no reason to scream like your hair is on fire.
Also, quit trying to tell me the outcome of the play before the whistle blows. How many times will you say, "He's stopped for a loss in the backfield. No. Wait. He gets away and breaks it to the outside where he's run out of bounds. Wait. HE'S STILL ON HIS FEET! THIS ONE IS GOING TO BE A TOUCHDOWN! NO! CAUGHT FROM BEHIND AT THE ELEVEN YARD LINE. FIRST AND GOAL!
To Ron Jaworski: I like the breakdown and analysis you do/did on the Countdown shows, but the 40 seconds in between plays is not long enough for you to breakdown the check-off to the third receiver when the defense is in a two deep cover two and the weakside linebacker comes on a delayed blitz as the strong side end and tackle run a stunt.
To Tony Kornheiser (sp?): You I don't mind; keep up the good work.

The MNF squad is certainly lacking in many respects IMHO. Kornheiser is way, way, way out of his element and needs a pink-slip (not to wear, but then again...why not? LOL) ASAP.
I'm not a big fan of Tirico but he's decent. Jaws is just okay with me.
Enough of the celebrity-types that come in for their network mandated cameos. Can't MNF just be about football? Is there anything wrong with actually giving the audience what they want? They don't want Kornheiser; they don't want cameos; they want football, football analysis and football statistics defined intelligently. Oh, did I say they also wanted football???? ;)

I agree with Aikman and Buck. I think Buck is much more entertaining during a football broadcast than a baseball one. Maybe it's because Aikman is his sidekick instead of that god awful McCarver.
I'll be watching the game on CBS tonight. I bet a split screen CBS/NBC viewing would be interesting for a few plays. I'll give it a whirl.

With all the crappy MNF games this year, I guess they feel it's necessary to shill all their network affiliates shows (ABC) and have lame guests during the game.
It's become like watching The View.

Boxman - i think you'll be disappointed on the split screen. As far as I know, they will be exactly the same...I think
I agree with Bond, those cameo's have GOT to go. No one watching the football game wants to know Jay-Z's touring plans! And I'm just glad I don't have to hear about Hannah Montana ever again. C'mon ESPN, that had to be an all time low!!!

You're right. They are the same. I've got CBS and NBC on the split screen and it's nearly identical even right down to the commericials mostly.

I thought Gumbel was going to go down to the field and give Brady a BJ in the fourth quarter, however.
VG game. But Collingsworth was right that it won't mean anything if they don't win it all out now.

It was a great game to watch. The Giants almost pulled it out. The broadcasting was atrocious. Gumby and Collinsworth are just brutal. I agree with PD. I thought Gumby had a ring in his pocket and was going to propose after the final kneel down by Brady. Buck and Aikman would've been a lot better.

The Pats had better tighten up that defense or pray for bad weather @home during the play offs. From what I saw last night the Colts and the real Manning will burn em down!

The Giants really blew it. When the Pats scored to make it 28-25, they felt some pressure I am sure, because they stopped running the ball. Coughlin and his idiots have got to go. The only good coach there is the D Coordinator.
