0 Subject: Transitioning to a keeper league; best practices?

I'm the commish of competitive 12 team league, and we want to transition to a keeper league after our draft next season. I've never done one before, and I'm looking for some guidance in terms of what kinds of rules, or system works best.

So, what have you liked about the keeper leagues that you've played in? What are the benefits of keeping many players, vs. setting a limit? Complications with having penalties for keeping players (ie losing a pick 2 rounds earlier, etc)? Insights into why you prefer one system over another? Anything and everything really, would be greatly appreciated.

Some details that may help: Teams in our league start 6 IDPs, and we have inflated defensive scoring (such that linebackers score almost as many points as QBs and productive d-linemen are hot commodities). And we use ESPN.

cheers,

There are as many ways to do a "keeper league" as there are to do non-keeper leagues.

IMHO, best thing oyu can do, is poll your existing managers and find out what they WANT in the form of a keeper league, and then build from that list of "wants", to incoporate rules which involve as many of those "wants" as can be reasonably accomodated.

Just know this...commishing a keeper league, is more work FOR the commish, than a non-keeper league.

Agree with Sarge. It can be a LOT of work. Our 20 team baseball league with all the extras is so much work, but it is also a lot of fun.

My thoughts:
1. Start Fresh. Redraft with your rules in place. Work hard on your rules but allow your league to grow and make additions/tweaks as you go to see what works and what doesn't and what the league might want to try.
2. Get another manager and make the rules up. Have a basis for your league to go off of to make changes. If you go 5x5 and say here's what we have, they may decide tehy like obp better than ba. In our G20 Hoops, the league actually asked to include ORebs (in addition to Total REbs) from the rules that we came up with and even though the two of us who made the rules didn't want it, after voting, the league REALLY wanted it. So we still have it to this day.
3. Research other keeper leagues and see if they fit what you like. Do you like a keeper league with contracts? Do you like a high number of keepers? Do you like a Dynasty League where you're allowed to keep everyone you want and just draft to fill whoever you didn't keep?
4. Vet members well. High turnover hurts keeper leagues, but don't be afraid to remove a manager who is hurting your league. Just because they aren't very good right then doesn't mean they aren't a good manager though and just because his managing style differs from yours means he is wrong. Make sure you do your due-diligence before you bring them in. I've been burnt and it hurts the league when that happens.

Find a good website to host your league and write up a comprehensive Constitution (rules). If you use a site like Yahoo! make sure that league members have somewhere to go to see the rules at their convenience.

I think the first think I'd do is figure out, number of managers you want. 12, 14, 16 or even 20 like we have can be fun. I would never ever go less than 12. Then figure out how many keepers you want. IMM, if you're only going to have a small number, then you might as well not even have a keeper league. We tried to have 7 our first year and found out it wasn't enough. We have 9 now and still get a few cries that it isn't enough, but you got to be smart so every team has a chance to reload. Some people absolutely love dynasty leagues, but that favors the best teams and as much as I'd like to play in one someday, I can see the bottom teams leaving if there was never any hope.

Finally, when you're setting up your positions and bench numbers, don't make it too easy to find good players on the WW. That can kill your trading and tough decisions about holding injured/slumping players. Allow enough bench spots so a youngster can be kept even if he isn't worth much right now. Allow enough keepers for this reason as well. After your first year, you are bound to have some changes/tweaks and that's fine. In fact, every year you should allow the league to propose things to make the league better and let the members decide.

Have fun!

Ugh, I'm sorry, I thought this was the baseball forum...Still, many of the same guidelines apply.

If all the players are undrafted then there really isnt a "transition".
You are basically starting up a new keeper league with managers who have played together.

I would follow the advice of Ref.....just decide on the rules before the draft to allow managers to incorporate the keeper rules into their draft strategy.
