Subject: RIFC 2008: Qualifying Leagues

- [330592710] Thu, Jul 17, 2008, 11:17
Now that the managers for the 2008 RIFC have been announced, it is time to start forming qualifying leagues.
There will be two AAA qualifying leagues, and spots in those leagues will be reserved on a priority system. For those not eligible for a AAA league, one or more AA leagues will be formed, depending on interest and on finding commissioners.
As a preamble to soliciting interest in these leagues, let me recap the "expectations" that I sent out with RIFC Invitations this year:
1. You will actively manage your team throughout the regular season and the playoffs (if applicable).
2. You will regularly check the RotoGuru message forum to stay up to date on current league developments, during the preseason and the season.
3. You will make your best efforts to keep the draft moving along. If you have conflicts during the draft that will delay your responsiveness, you will make active use of queues or designated pickers to ensure that you do not hold up the draft.
4. You will post a timely, written rationale of each pick. Rationales are typically several sentences long, and posted with a 2-round lag. (This is optional for Qualifying leagues)
5. You will provide an active email address to others in the league so that you can typically be reached daily. You agree to regularly check that email address during the preseason and the season, and to update league members if your email address changes. You will alert the others in the league if there are times that you expect to be unavailable or unreachable.
6. You will behave at all times in a respectful, cooperative manner.
Each QL must select a Commissioner, and each must choose a site to host the league. The RIFC will use Fanball once again. For the past several years, AOL offered a free version which was essentially a clone of the fanball system. However, AOL will be using a different platform this year (http://www.fleaflicker.com/) which may or may not be an acceptable option. We’ll need to figure that out over the next few weeks. Rules should generally be the same as those for the RIFC, but minor amendments may be made if the hosting system will not effectively support the RIFC rules. Again, each league should determine (in advance) which, if any, rules will deviate from RIFC rules.
I ask that all QLs use the kafenated.net “On The Clock” software for their drafts. The cost is very modest ($10, which will be paid for by RotoGuru.com this year), and the automated features (email alerts, queues, etc.) greatly facilitate a timely process. By using consistent software for all RIFC-related drafts, it is much easier for me to produce a consolidated draft summary at the conclusion of all drafts.
Each league will have 14 teams, so we will need to fill 28 AAA slots. I recommend that the following priorities be used in filling those slots:
RIFC teams ranked 7-14 in 2007 (excluding me). All AAA teams making the playoffs in 2006 (excluding the six teams who are advancing to the RIFC) All AA playoff teams (excluding the winner, which is in the RIFC) Teams finishing 9th in each of the QLs.
I believe that this list identifies 26 teams. I suggest that we form a "first-come, first-served" waiting list for any remaining AAA openings, open to any participants in last year's QLs (AAA or AA) who are not already on the priority list above. I chose 9th place as the automatic cutoff, as each league seemed to have a distinct W/L gap between the 9th and 10th place teams.
This thread will be for you to indicate your interest in participating. Please post your handle, an email address, whether you qualify for one of the AAA priority slots, and whether you are willing to serve as a commissioner. (There are no pre-qualifications for a AA spot.)
Before actually forming the two AAA leagues, I would like to have both commissioners adentified. Judy has already volunteered to serve as one commish (and she is AAA eligible this year), so we need only one other AAA Commissioner. Once both commissioners are appointed, the two AAA leagues can begin to assemble.
Please note that if you do not leave an email address, or if you leave one but do not check your email, you may be skipped when leagues are eventually filled. Every year there are a few people who express interest early, but then fail to appear when the rubber meets the road. It is the responsibility of everyone who is interested to stay connected to the process. It is not the responsibility of Commissioners to use extraordinary means to reach anyone. While there is no immediate urgency, once spots become limited, you must be responsive.
Have I forgotten anything? Perhaps those involved in last year's league formation process can suggest other guidelines for making the process run as smoothly as possible.

I just checked the fleaflicker site and our old AOL data has been moved over. If anyone has time to really study the site, (I've looked it over and it seems nice...), let us know. They are supposed to have all the features of AOL plus some nicer STAT features...
Some stuff cannot be checked until a league is filled though...

I just looked at Fleaflicker from a RIFC point of view and they lack the feature of double-headers. RIFC is using them and it would make sense to have it in AAA to.

Gees Judy did you give everyone $20 to join your league last year? :)
You might want to start a separate thread in the Football Leagues and Standings Forum to start a sign up. Since your the only commish for AAA right now you can choose if you want AAA #1 or #2! If anyone doesn't want to be in Judy's league then they can start the other AAA league and see if someone steps up to commish.

[34] whistle on Kyle!
As I mentioned earlier, I would prefer that we get both AAA commissioners selected before starting to form either AAA league. I'd rather have menegers choose between two people, rather than one person and one TBA.

Regarding hosting site:
If it appears that no free site will offer the critical features (and I think doubleheader scheduling is an important feature), then we should have the QLs hosted at Fanball as well.
If so, here is my offer: 1. I will reimburse each QL commish for the cost of a fanball league ($69.95) 2. I would request that each QL manager volunatrily contribute $6 toward the hosting cost of the Fanball site, to be contributed in the same manner as a GuruPatron donation. To do this, please use one of the donation methods specified on the GuruPatron information page (Paypal, Amazon, or check). Although a pro-rata share of the cost is only $5, I'm rounding it up to $6 to compensate for the Paypal or Amazon processing fees. (If you send a check, $5 is sufficient). Please identify your payment as "RIFC donation" 3. If anyone wishes to contribute more than $6, the excess donation will be treated as a GuruPatron donation.
GuruPatron donations are running very low this year, and it's not yet clear that donations this year wil be sufficient to cover costs. But I think it's important that all Qualifying Leagues are hosted at a site that can handle the idiosyncrasies of the scoring and scheduling, so I'll cover the costs, ask for voluntary donations, and hope for the best.

Excellent. We have our two AAA commissioners, so TD and Judy may each start a separate sign-up thread (please use the football standings forum to enlist the league managers. Meanwhile, I'll email each commissioner to discuss how to handle kafenatid.net (draft) and hosting site registrations, etc - assuming that Fanball becomes the choice.
We still need a volunteer to commish the first AA league. Any volunteers?

Guru, I will try to pay a payment this week to help with league costs. Both kids have graduated college now, and I can help more now as long as my wife does not find out. AA was great last year.
