Just curious if anyone else is coaching youth football?

I've got a 10 year old in his second year of Pop Warner. I was the "line coach" on his "Mighty Mite" team last year.

Somehow I was "convinced" to be the head coach of his "Jr Peewee" team this season.

Maybe its me and my overplanning ways, but man, if this isn't a HUGE time sucker, I don't know what it. Way more hours than I expected for planning, coordinating, etc. But, as I said, its probably just the way I approach things.

Anyway, just curious if anyone else is in the same boat.

been there, done that, had fun with that, didnt spend a whole lot of time with that.....but like i said....i had fun with that. i coached 8-9-10 year olds for a few seasons several years ago. the pressure from the kids parents pretty much ruined the enjoyment for me.

Well, that didn't take long...

I have my first official "disguntled parent".

We've had 9 practices. He's had a conversation with me afterwards twice now (each around 30 minutes long). He started off the conversation both times with "I don't want to be THAT dad, but..." Some legitimate concerns, other just stupid parent things. Oye. I guess I should also ignore that this was the parent I had to tell not to smoke a cigar on the practice field, on a public school property.

I coach soccer and basketball for the local school teams, and you will always get "that parent".

Last year I had a dad complaining that his kid didn't make the team, even though the kid managed to show up for only 2 of my 5 tryouts.

I just shrugged him off and told him that he had to talk to the school board if he had an issue, and then I offered him a job as my assistant, telling him he had to make all the practices, and that shut him up real fast.

Oh wow, those were the days.
And things don't appear to have changed at all.
Never did football, but lots of years in Little League.
You just end up burned out.
It's not just enough to take care of your team.
The umpiring side of it is what finally drove me away.

That and the disgruntled parents.
At least you have one that is showing up at practices.
Usually the disgruntled ones are the ones you only see at games.

Almost got talked into doing some umpiring a few years back and came to my senses before hand.

Oh the joys of young minds...

We have only been practicing a "Right" formation (running a Wing-T offense). So...I introduce a "Left" formation. Pretty simple, I thought. NOOOOOO! The 4-5 plays we had down pretty cleanly...GONE. Oye.

Just something funny from practice yesterday...

I see a kid limping around during a little scrimmage time we had going. I go over to see if he's OK.

"Hey, whats going on, you OK?"
"Yeah coach, I just knee'd myself in the groin."

OK. How do you respond to that???
