complete RIFC draft (position grid at bottom)

RIFC Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

1. In comparison to most years, I ran a less mocks, and generally did a lot less research relying more on "gut" than in previous years. Like most years however, I did pay a LOT of attention to our leagues scoring, which I feel is heavily influenced by return yardage. A very basic rundown of a few key points I wanted to hit in my plan were: Hold off on IDP moreso than any other year, Hold off on QBs till extreme value started showing up, draft tons of RBs/WRs early and try to have a healthy amount of players that have special teams duties. Although TeamD offers a LOT of points, try to find value instead of overpaying like last years Ravens D at 5.01. Although I felt I may have "overpayed" at times (higher than regular ADP), I really did ace the return yardage scenario. Also, the QB tandem of Eli/Schaub worked out way better than I imagined. Also, lastly, my IDP squad, although maybe not filled with a lot of LB1s, should prove to be a very competitive group.

2. Fav Picks:
Ginn @ 6.11 Hester @ 7.04 - Both of these two may end the year top 10 (or higher) in WR scoring.
Do overs:
Bills @ 19.04 - Although it's great value, overlapping byes for TeamD is a stupid mistake.

3. Teams I like:
Smith32 - Starts off strong with LT, then has pretty good balance thoughout. A lot of "question mark" players however.
Holt - needs one (or two) of his RBs to step up big, BUT if that happens, lookout! One of the few teams that "payed" into returners.
Guru - Can never discount him, although might have relatively serious depth issues. Also is a manager that seems aware of returners.

4. After many years of doing this… I must say, nothing.

5. Besides the momentary lapses on bye weeks, I'm very happy with the way everything went down. I'm happy to the manager of this squad going into this season, and look forward to many weeks of fun, screaming at the TV in ways that my wife can't understand... "but I though you were rooting for..."

1.Drafting 11th I decided to go after receivers first rather than running backs. In past seasons Even when I do get great running backs they fail to produce or get injured. So this year I figured I would go in another direction.

For the most part I was able to carry this plan out. But in round three I panicked and started grabbing running backs and did not draft another receiver until round six. I still feel like I got great value with that pick (Hines Ward) but wish I had gutted it out with my original plan.

2. My favorite picks besides the obvious Moss and Edwards are Edgerrin James in the fourth, Jake Delhomme eleventh and Mike Peterson in round twelve. each of those picks made me feel like I needed to get on my horse and get out of town fast!

My least favorite pick is Matt Hasselbeck in round eight. What was I thinking? This pick scares the crap out me. I hope its not as bad as I think. but I probobly have a bust on my hands here.

3. I really like Bags team. I think its pretty solid all around. He may be a little light in the receivers. But if they do pan out I thinks were all in big trouble.

4. What surprised me the most was how fast teams started drafting IDP'S. I know they are very valuable part of any team. But I was still surprised so many were drafted so early with the amount of good offensive players that were still on the board.

5. What would I change? Nothing really. I feel like I drafted as well as my drafting position allowed me to. Except maybe for the Hasselbeck fiasco.

After looking at the consolidated draft analysis, here are a few extra thoughts:

Overall, I ended with a team that was drafted on avg of 2 spots later (a good thing, I guess).

Of the players that I payed more into: Bush, Hester, Leon Washington, Breaston, R.Marshall (maybe), McKelvin... they all have significant return yardage potential.

Even though I payed extra for those; I still got extreme value at LB/DL/QB. E.Manning/J.Peterson/Kampman/VandenBosch/D.Lee were all had several rounds later than the avg.

1. Given the 13th pick, my overall strategy was to move away from RB-RB and be open to best available. So I went RB-WR-RB-WR-WR to open things. I also did not want to wait as long for LB as I had last year, so I tried to get top LB's earlier. I was determined not to follow runs, and I did not.

2. My favorite pick has to be getting Carson Palmer at 6.02. He's a top 5 QB and probably a top 10 scorer, gotten with the 72nd pick. My next favorite is Ricky Williams at 7.13. It is not a gauruntee that he will be starting all year, but if he puts up big numbers early he might end up being my RB #2. I also like Boldin at 4.02. LenDale White ended up being a reach but it was partly because I had to queue up 10 picks ahead of time and partly because I couldnt take the time to research. I thought it was a pretty good pick at the time until I heard of Chris Johnson.

3. I kinda like Smith's team - anyone starting off with LT has a pretty good advantage to begin.

4. Not much surprises me anymore with this league. These guys know what they are doing at this level.

5. Yeah, there are a couple things. 3rd pick was a little weak. The other thing was waiting too long to get a backup QB. I wanted one around 15 but there were none I really liked. Then suddenly, by 19 everyone had a backup. So Russell was the one I picked from the motley crew remaining.

I have to say that considering my situation during the first week of the draft that I did VERY well. It was the first time I had to queue up several picks in a row, without having much time to research. I never seemed to have anyone stolen out from under me - all of my queues went through. I would like to thank Guru again for managing my queue during that time.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Same as always. Go after talented players, preferably ones with high ceilings and starting jobs, while not stretching for them. Avoid burning up picks on mediocre has-beens. Using this strategy, I always expect a fair amount of my draft picks to not turn out well. That's what free agents are for. I did execute this plan.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

Tom Brady completely transformed my team when I traded for him mid-season last year. I don't expect a repeat of last year, and I don't like the Patriots, but how can I not feel happy about having Brady on my team?

Calvin Johnson in the 4th round. Love it love it love it. I thought there was no way he was going to come back to me at 4.09 but I'll be damned!

Chris Perry at 9.06. I always liked Perry (when he was able to get on the field). He's a big play back, and the news that he was the likely starter came out just before my 9th rd pick. It's the kind of pick that you want to tell friends about, even though those friends have no interest in fantasy sports and will probably want to punch you.

Pacman "quit calling him Adam" Jones. His exact job duties are still up in the air a bit, but he's one of the best/most athletic DB/return-man types that the NFL has seen. As the season goes on I think he'll get more valuable, especially if the Cowboys wisen up and let him return kicks and play defense full time.

Tarvaris Jackson in the 19th. Just kidding.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own) and which ones (other than your own) do you think are crap?

Almost every team I look at looks pretty solid. I don't know how that's possible. I started looking at team rosters closely and was typing stuff up for them until it became obvious that I was going to be commenting on every team in the league. I don't want to do that so I'll just say I think you all did a great job. The only team that I have somewhat serious questions about is Electroman's, and a lot of that may be due to the fact that he was drafting from the 14 spot. Rudi Johnson didn't help matters much either. If Peyton doesn't have a career year and S.Smith doesn't bounce back it could be a long year for electro's team. Having said that, I'll probably lose to him twice.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

I definitely noticed a slight shift in RIFC drafting behaviors (as to the value of certain positions) but nothing major. Nothing that surprised me. High end WR's seem to have become more valuable, team defenses seem to be treated like kickers by a few, TE's seemed to be more prized, but I could be wrong about all this. I don't know if a statistical breakdown is even possible but I'd be interested to see the average draft position has shifted from year to year (broken into wr1, wr2... rb1 rb2 rb 3 etc etc.).

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Well, even though he may still turn out to be The Man, and in spite of his electric PPG last season, I still ca't feel real proud of taking Ronnie Brown 3.06. There had to be something better there, like Parker, Maroney, or James. Who knows? Maybe it will work out OK. It remains to be see whether Jonathan Stewart or Mendenhall can be useful to me or not. I really put myself behind the 8-ball at RB. I ended up with Ernie Graham and Ryan Grant last year though, so I'm not going to lose any sleep over my RB's yet.

The temperature started to shift here in Oklahoma this week and it's starting to smell like Fall. OU is on the tube beating up Cincinnati. There's a full slate of NFL tomorrow, 2 games on Monday. If you don't love this time of year then you must be a terrorist or low on testosterone or something. Thanks to Dave the Guru again for running the RIFC. The invitational leagues are heads and shoulders above any other leagues I've played in (including money leagues). Great competition and structure. I may go to bed early tonight so tomorrow comes faster! :D
