Congrats to Slackjawed Yokel, repeat winner of the playoffs in the RIFC. Final Standings
This thread is for a recap of all of the 2008 RIFC leagues, including the the AAA leagues and the AA league. Any manager is welcome to post any post-season reflections on the season - what went well, what didn't, what lessons were learned, etc. Also, if there are any rule changes that anyone thinks should be considered for next year, please suggest them here. That will make them easier to recall next summer.
QL Commissioners - thanks for your work during the season. Your diligence is appreciated. Please post your final standings (regular season and playoffs) here, so that I can easily find them next summer when invitations and qualifications for 2009 need to be prepared.

One thought for next year, and I'm curious to get your feedback.
Perhaps the playoffs should be seeded by total points. The playoff qualifiers would be chosen as before (top 6 teams by W/L plus the top two remaining teams in point total). But the current practice of seeding those point qualifiers as #7 and #8 may be unfair to the top seeds. And this year, the top two point teams in the RIFC ended up seeded #4 and #5.
This year, if we had used that seeding, the winner would apparently have been Shortbus (assuming that his dormant lineup for weeks 15 and 16 would have been as left from the first week). The top two point seeds would have both lost their round 1 games, so IAC would not have survived to the finals (getting nosed by Shortbus by less than a point in the first round). Thus, the results this year don't provide a compelling reason for the change. But it did seem somewhat unfair that the top two point teams this season ended up facing each other as the #4 and #5 seeds in the first week.
Maybe that's just the nature of the beast.
I'm curious how this alternate seeding might have influenced the results in the other leagues.

I want to re-congratulate Slackjawed Yokel as well, as I didn't realize that he was indeed the defending champ from last year. Way to go... I don't think there has ever been a 3-peat in the RIFC however... and I plan on trying to make sure that doesn't happen. I did however, manage to actually make it to the finals this year, which is now the furthest I've been in the 4 years I've been playing here.
This season was again a fun one, and if I take one thing away from this year, I think it'd be to be really careful when making a deal. Not long after trading away one of my three starting QBs, I once again found myself with no clear cut "studd" performer there. Shaun Hill did OK for me there during the FF playoffs, but it felt really risky relying on him.
One of my biggest team strengths was having good depth once again. Thus if injuries hit, like they did at QB/RB, it wasn't necessarily the end of the world. Leon Washington was one of those type of players who allowed me to not worry during bye weeks, and when Steven Jackson's injury hit.
One of my biggest weaknesses ended up not having enough cornerstone players. Besides Jennings/Steelers Defense there was really no players that outperformed the competition by a significant enough margin to give me a clear advantage. Every week was a tough fight, and even though I lead the league in scoring up till week 13, I ended up being seeded 5th (still good enough for a re-invite luckily).
As I mentioned earlier, it was really a lot of fun, and I look forward to seeing a lot of you again next year.

As far as the seeding goes... I'm not worried. We all get lucky/unlucky once and a while, and I have no hard feelings about the way things went down. It's not like it was a big surprise either, as I knew from a while back that I didn't have a great winning percentage, thus I'd like have a tough early matchup in the playoffs. Maybe Bags might feel slightly different due to the circumstances though?
One area where I do think maybe we should consider maybe making an adjustment (as was discussed earlier this year), was in the requirements for a re-invite. Maybe in future years, we should consider making the qualification standards from the "top" league, to be based upon points. It would have been too bad if Bags/Myself didn't get a re-invite back, based on the win/loss #s.

Considering how I did in my other leagues, this year, I don't know how I managed to win this league again. Maybe it's the whole rising to your competition thing - though, more likely, it's that all my luck was saved up for this league.
Looking back at my original draft, a couple of things stand out that might help guide my draft next year. In the Super Bowl game, only 4 of my first 13 draft picks were in my starting lineup, and one of these I had waived and picked back up during the playoffs. This player, David Harris, was actually my only drafted IDP on my roster at year end. So, the lesson learned - focus on depth during the draft and wait on IDP's as there are always tackles to be found on the WW. Another interesting point with regards to depth - my 14th round pick of Aaron Rodgers was obviously huge (ostensibly to back up 6th rounder Derek Anderson ), and 17th rounder Fred Jackson sat patiently on the bench all year waiting for his chance to shine in the Super Bowl. Lastly, I also found that I dropped 17 of my 24 draft picks during the season - because of various reasons (injuries, poor performance, self-inflicted gunshot wounds, positive steroid-masking agent tests, weather, etc.), and the only one I really regretted in retrospect was dropping the Cowboys D. Some of the players I picked up off waivers or as FA's were huge for me (Antonio Bryant, Robert Mathis, Nick Collins, Thomas Davis, Devone Bess, etc).
And you won't be hearing any talk from the Yokels about a threepeat next year (mainly because we don't want to pay Pat Riley any royalty fees).
As far as changing the seedings, Guru, I think I like your line of thinking, but this could also be disadvantageous to the regular season winners. So, you could set the top two seeds by W/L records, and then seed the rest according to point totals.

Could someone from AAA#1 associate some of those team names with the manager name? Some are easily identifiable, but some are not.

Also interesting to note that youngroman started 12-0 then lost 9 in a row, then did not lose again through the Super Bowl.
As far as the seedings go for AAA1, had the seeds all been point based, the first round winners would've been the same but Ref would've knocked youngroman out in the semis and I would've beaten sR and then beaten Ref in the finals. Oh what could've been!

re AAA#1:
Gotta tell ya though that the 3 consolation first round winners (163.06, 150.00, 141.54) all outpointed ALL the teams in the first round of the main draw (top score was 140.64).
On the final weekend, both consolation finalists (136.32, 139.82) outpointed the main draw teams (129.68 for YR, 112.24 for Ref.)
Shows how fickle this game is.

I think this year was interesting because of the parity. Maybe I just haven't been paying enough attention, but I had trouble identifying the top scorer at each position without looking. After looking, my thoughts on the skill positions:
QB - Raise your hand if you thought Aaron Rodgers, Tyler Thigpen and Chad Pennington would outscore Roethlisberger, Favre, Bulger, and Derek Anderson.
RB - Everyone debated LT vs ADP, and both of them were outscored by D Williams, Turner, T Jones, Forte. I don't know many leagues where any of those guys were first rounders.
WR - Johnny Lee Higgins outscored Reggie Wayne in RIFC scoring. I note this because we drafted Higgins for another guy in another league as a filler player becuase he left the draft early.
TE - Gonzo outscored everyone else by 40 pts. I had pegged him for more decline. Guess not.
This league was fun, despite my annual semi-final departure. I'm glad to be back for another year.

In AAA#1, in addition to the consolation round, we also ran a "Plate" draw (first round losers) and a 3/4 playoff. It kept us busy and for the losers, it was a chance for "if only...".
We had a GREAT group of managers and our forum was top notch with over 800 entries (about 1/3 mine as I detailed my frustrations about my beloved Eagles...if you are not sure where I stand on the topic, just visit the forum). Most managers participated in discussions and we explored not just our fantasy and favorite teams, but other historical stuff -- check out the entries on the "Miracle in the Meadowlands" -- what Eagles fans call it -- vs "The Fumble" -- which is what Jints fans call it. We also compared computer stories -- go MAC!
I think our forum is what made it a lot of fun for us. I know I had a blast!

This was a disappointing year. Basically, it came down to bad decisions. The year finished off well, winning in the last 4 weeks, including the consolation round. I think like many teams, the players that were supposed to perform well, didn't. And when they did, it was too late. I didn't have the depth to overcome that problem. I took a lot of risks in the draft this year, probably wouldn't do that again. It could have paid off I guess. That risk meant that I didn't have a dependable RB2, and my TE was invisible for most of the season. I traded to fix both of those problems, but really only solved one, and lost a big piece at WR. It was an enjoyable year all in all.

A concept I like that is gaining ground is the guy with the best record gets the first pick in the draft of who he/she would like to play in the first round of the playoffs and seed it from there.
This format leads to some really strange results. The all-play to actual spread is off so much in this league format. I do lots of heavy number crunching for another league I'm in trying to figure certain things out. I'm working on this one now just for the heck of it.
I mean there were just 4 teams over .500 realplay in AAA2. 4. A 13-13 and 10-16 team faced off for the finals.
I think one can almost conclude that the regular season is just about meaningless. Sure seems that way for the other leagues I've opened so far.
Oh, and fanball still sucks.

"A concept I like that is gaining ground is the guy with the best record gets the first pick in the draft of who he/she would like to play in the first round of the playoffs and seed it from there."
This concept is entirely full of excellence for any league (such as the RIFC) in which managers can be depended on to make reasonably fast decisions. I'd extend it further to allow #1 to pick whoever from 5 through 8 they want; #2 to pick from one of the other three, and so on until #4 gets stuck with the last of 5 through 8.
One useful advantage to it is that, in some circumstances, normal playoff procedures give control over seeding to the worse teams. Imagine, if you will, a fairly simple scenario in an 8-team league:
Team A: 13-0 Team B: 11-2 Team C: 9-4 Team D: 8-5 (but with the tiebreaker over Team C) Team E: 6-7 Team F-H: Worse
Now, let's say that Team A just had their top two running backs and their only QB get run over by a chainsaw-wielding O.J. Simpson. And Teams C and D each play doormats in the league finale. It would generally be beneficial to Team D to make sure they lose that final-week game to play the weaker opponent in the playoffs. And nobody should ever be put in a position where playing to win (a game) is contrary to their interest in playing to win the championship.
It works wonderfully for (don't laugh, please!) high level bridge tournaments. It would also work wonderfully in the real-life NBA and NHL, though I know it will never happen. You think Dallas would have chosen to play Golden State a couple of years back?

My downfall was at QB. I basically had none until I traded for Eli, and by then it was too late. And I picked Palmer later than anyone of the four leagues. IDP was also a huge dissappointment, particularly at linebacker. I drafted more on name without actually looking at their stat declines over the last couple seasons.
One of these years I am going to have a first round pick that will be taken in the first round the next season. For two straight seasons my best player was a WR taken in the fourth round - Boldin this year, Moss last year.
