Too bad about Crennel. I really liked the guy. Not unexpected, obviously, but the guy got as much out of the talent on the field as anyone could have.

Marinelli out as well
No surprise there either.

I think that Crennel basically got an extra year because of the record last year. Could be another NE coordinator become coach if Pioli gets the job there.

Crennel's mismanagement the last few years has been abominable. The 10 win season was a total aberration with the only winning team they beat being the mediocre Seahawks. They lost @Oakland and @Cincinnati that year.
The one thing you can commend Romeo on was the way he always took the fall while Savage was in hiding. Savage did a poor job representing the team and Crennel always held the press conferences and took the blame for the staph infections and the Brady Quinn fight.
It is funny that with all the firings Lerner isn't addressing things and holding a press conference but Quinn and Joe Thomas are right now.

While I can see why they would dump Mangini... I don't really see any great candidates to replace him with. So I wonder. Martyball?

The current news in Cleveland is they're going after Pioli for GM/President where he'd get more power than he has in New England. For head coach Spagnola is the top name but the Plain Dealer did mention Marty, Holmgrem(probably taking at least 1 year off), and Andy Reid if they change coaches there. We can probably officially rule out Cowher at this point.

I think they have only just begun wooing Bill Cowher. I certainly wouldn't rule him out right now. They are going to toss a lot of money and power his way (maybe even throw in a 3 year deal with a GM position at the end, giving him lots of power & freedom to rebuild).
The problem with Cowher (and Marty, and Romeo) is that they were all defensive guys. Cleveland's problem isn't its defense.

Josh McDaniels would be a nice guy to have to coach up Quinn. Was McDaniels under Weis when he was there? Think of how Weis and Quinn were.

I've always figured that if Cowher returns it would be as an NFC coach (or back to the Steelers if things would happen to go really bad somewhere down the road). He really seems to enjoy retirement from coaching though.

Shanahan out today. It's all over the local news - a good 10 out of the 30 minutes is about it. I quietly laugh inside.

Sirius NFL radio reporting that Gruden got fired.

Indeed, Gruden has been fired. GM Bruce Allen is out as well.
I've never been a big fan of Gruden. Following the Super Bowl win, his teams were 45-51 and 0-2 in the playoffs. He'll latch on somewhere, but I don't know that he'll have the kind of success he had from 2000-2002 again.

This could have a ripple effect, coupled with what seems to be that Jason Garrett is in transit to St.Louis, may be a sign that he is going to be the Rams next coach. Now Phillips isn`t warming the seat, he is the coach of a team that underachieved. And Jones could either jump on Shanahan, thinking that the Bucs are interested in him, or Gruden, to help out Romo and the offense. And who do the Bucs have in mind to take over the team after firing the GM and coach? Cowher? Shanahan? Holmgren?

Didn't Favre and Gruden work together in Green Bay? Wonder how that relationship is...

Raheem Morris is the new head coach of the Bucs. Fired a coach yesterday, hired a coach today. Wow, that was fast!
I'm thinking they had Morris in mind, or even locked up, before they fired Gruden.

Herm Edwards fired.
I wonder if he gets another head coaching job? Maybe he goes and joins Lovie in Chicago?

Sucks for Edwards coming so late. A lot of opportunities have already been filled while he was waiting to learn his fate.
Of course, if he was a better head coach, he wouldn't have had to worry anyhow. ;)
