Steve McNair Shot to Death

07-04-2009 3:18 PM — Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair, 36, and a unidentified woman, have been found dead in downtown Nashville.

The pair died of apparent gunshots wounds and were found behind a market owned by Metro Trustee Charlie Cardwell, near the old General Hospital on Rolling Mill Hill. The woman sources say was approximately 20 years of age.

While details are sketchy at this time, NashvillePost.com sources say that the scene could be double homicide, a murder/suicide, or made to look like a murder/suicide.

McNair is survived by sons, Junior, Steven, Tyler, and Trenton.

Shocking and sad. And a reminder of how it can happen to anyone, anytime.

Agreed.

That said, Steve McNair had a son named "Steven" and another named "Junior?" What's he--George Foreman?

Whoa, that is really sad. He was a player I really enjoyed watching.

Yeah, this will forever tarnish McNair's "great guy" reputation...unless some very different facts come out.

B6 - I disagree. We should/can only judge him based on what he did on the field. If it wasn't for football, odds are we wouldn't even know who Steve McNair was. LT was a flawed personality, but we will always remember him for his ferociousness/nastiness on the field along with the Joe Theismann play.

Peyton Manning summed it up best - "Steve McNair was one of the greatest competitors I've ever played against," said Manning. "I'll always remember playing against him. Many of our defensive players (Colts) always talked about what a huge challenge it was having to play against him, He and I had some great battles against each other. Sharing the NFL MVP honor with him was special because of what a great football player he was. I'm truly going to miss him."

I think its pretty sh!tty that details like this become public knowledge. It's really no ones business, nothing good comes out of this.

RIP Steve!!!

Slizz, why would I judge a person only based on his onfield performances? If we are talking about if someone was a great player, then yes. But if we are talking about the character traits of an individual, that is different.

Anytime a guy who has 4 kids and is still "married" starts shacking up with some else, that in my eyes makes not so much a great guy.

Like I said, the facts still have to be confirmed, but in my eyes it is not looking too good.

I agree. Lots of guys in sports do very cool things off the field (community service, and so on). And when someone does something bad that reflects on their personality.

McNair was a fierce online competitor, who played through pain more often than not. But, in the end, bad judgment appears to have done him in.

I don't recall watching (or drafting) McNair because of what a golly-gosh-great-guy he was off the field. In fact, I never knew the guy. Never met him. Never even saw him in person. I didn't know he was married, nor did I know he had one, two, or four children. I didn't know what kind of community service he did or did not do and I also didn't know what kind of husband or father he was.

For all we know, he could have been the biggest jerk of a father and husband as we've ever seen. He could have been a wife-beater, too. We know he had a girlfriend, so maybe he has STDs, too. Maybe he's infected his wife. Maybe he did drugs, too.

Who knows?

But, more importantly, who cares?

And I don't mean who cares in the sense that the fact that he had a girlfriend should remain a secret. I mean who cares in the sense that football players are (surprise!) human. They have all the faults of everybody else, but we seem to forget that because they are fantasy gods. A player is married and has a girlfriend? Fine. I think he's kind of a jerk, but it's really an issue for him and his wife (and his girlfriend) to figure out. I'm sure there are people I work with that are married and have girlfriends/boyfriends. I'm sure you work with some as well.

The point is that most, if not all, of us only knew McNair through his actions on the gridiron. Don't deify him because he put up good stats. And don't hide from the truth. His death is a loss for the football world and for his wife and kids, but we really only knew the football side of things.

It's unfortunate that it seems McNair put himself in a situation that led to his death, but so be it. Sad, but true. I will respect him no less as a football player because having a girlfriend while married certainly doesn't show up in the stat sheet. And I will respect him no less as a person because I never respected him as a person to begin with. I would have had to have met him or at least had more detailed information about his personal life to have respect for him as a person.
