0 Subject: RIFC 2009: Getting started

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Jul 16, 2009, 09:48

I am pleased to announce the 14 managers for the 2009 RIFC:
Fugazi (pending acceptance)
Yokel (pending acceptance)
Smith32
Bags
IAC
ShortBus
Youngroman
s R
SwinganaMiss
Culdeus (contingent)
bmd
wiggs
BoNkA
Guru

This list includes me (based on last year, the most unqualified of the 14…), the top-6 seeds from last year's RIFC, 3 teams from each AAA league, and the (playoff) winner of the AA league. For each AAA league, I selected the playoff winner plus the top two seeds for the playoffs. In the instance that the playoff winner was one of the top two seeds, then the third seed was selected. In one AAA league, the 3rd place finisher declined (preferring to remain in AAA), and was replaced by the fourth place team from that league.

I am still awaiting acceptances from two returning RIFC managers, and culdeus has said that his participation is contingent on the selection of hosting site or drafting site or both. If he opts out or if either of the two returning RIFC teams decline, they will be replaced.

Although it is still early, there are several things that we can start on:
1. Sign-ups for qualifying leagues. I will start a separate thread for this.
2. Discussion of possible rules changes. (We can use this thread for that.)
3. Discussion of any other issues that should be resolved before the start of the draft – including selection of a hosting site.

In recent years, we have started the draft around August 15. However, this year, the opening game of the NFL schedule is not until September 10, which is essentially a week later than prior years. In addition, my son is getting married on the weekend of August 22 – which will make is difficult for me to ride herd on the draft that weekend. In previous years, we have completed the draft in about 2 weeks, and a start date of 8/24 would have us finish around September 7th. Since that is Labor Day weekend, however, it would probably be desirable to get finished a bit earlier, so maybe we’ll start around August 19-20, and just deal flexibly with the wedding weekend. Please let me know of any date conflicts you might have in late August and early September. While I know that some of you like to get going sooner than later, others prefer to wait for as many preseason injuries to happen before getting stuck.

I have not yet fully reviewed the issues that arose during last season that might prompt rules changes (and/or clarifications). If anyone would like to skim through the various discussion threads from last year and post potential issues, please do so. However, I know of at least several issues to consider. One recent raised issue relates to leveling the (draft) parity between RBs and receivers, and the other relates to the seeding of playoff opponents:

Scoring, receivers, and parity
1. Amend the scoring to include a provision for pass receptions.
2. Consider making one RB slot a flex slot for a RB or receiver.

Playoff opponent seeding
3. Consider changing the playoff seeding to be based solely on points (playoff teams would be selected as they were before, but the seeding would then be based on points).
4. Alternatively, consider a format where the top seed gets to pick his 1st round playoff opponent from among the 5-8 seeds, followed by the 2nd seed selecting from among the remaining teams, etc.)

Are there other ideas to consider?

Regarding hosting site: I started a separate thread on this topic a few days ago. It would probably be helpful to consolidate discussion on hosting sites in that thread. At this point, the leading contenders seem to be:
1. Return to Fanball
2. Move to MFL.com (MyFantasyLeague.com)
3. Move to Fantrax

Fanball is the most expensive option of the three, but not by enough to force the decision. MFL has some very ardent supporters, lead by culdeus. Fantrax has the advantage of being free. I have not yet been able to assemble a complete list of distinctions, although all three do offer doubleheader schedules. Fanball appears to be the only one that allows rosters to be distinct for each doubleheader game.

I have generally been satisfied with Fanball, but not thrilled. Their setup takes some “getting used to”. In my case, I’ve used it long enough that I have a comfort level there, although I am bothered that they occasionally choose to change position eligibilities after we have drafted, and I have not found their customer support to be particularly accommodating. In early investigations of the other two sites, both have responded quickly to questions, and both seem eager to accommodate. But of course, they are trying to lure new business.

I’m going to be on vacation for most of the rest of July, often with only dial-up access, so it is going to be difficult to for me to do a full assessment before the July 31 discount deadline for Fanball. If so, I'll just wait until a more informed decision can be made. But to the extent that other managers can take a look at the alternatives and provide feedback in the next two weeks, I’d really appreciate it.

I’ll dig up and post last year’s rules later today.

Draft2:

I have received 2 set of numbers.

Smith32 sent the following:
2 12 9 4 14 3 1 10 7 8 13 5 11 6

BoNkA then sent the following:
4 10 8 1 3 14 7 13 5 11 2 6 9 12

Applying the first set to resequence an alphabetical list, and then applying the second to assign draft order, we have the following order:

1 culdeus
2 wiggs
3 SwinganaMiss
4 IAC
5 BoNkA
6 beastiemiked
7 s R
8 Guru
9 Smith32
10 Bags
11 letterj
12 Fugazi
13 Slackjawed Yokel
14 Youngroman

We can begin immediately. Culdeus get the first decision. There is no clock for this round as long as we don't get too bogged down.

Reminder: Draft order for the "real draft" will snake, so whoever takes the first pick also gets the last pick in round 2, etc.

For anyone who may be blocked from this forum, you can try an end run that has been available for a number of years. For example, to view this thread, the URL is:
http://rhccucc.org/cgi-bin/endrun.pl?board=foot&thread=5228

It should work for any thread, by substituting the proper board name and thread number, which you should be able to discern from the usual URL for that thread. (Leave out everything after the #)

Note: This program will allow you to view the current thread, but you will not be able to post.

nice, another 2 days where I don't need to make a decision. haven't looked at any player projections yet, so I would not have known where to pick. taking the last available spot is fine in that case, as long as I end up in a spot I like.

my bet is that I won't pick in the top6 and not higher than 13th.

Was between 1 and 6. With 6 there's at least the ability to monitor what people don't have between 1 and 5 that can make up the gap on down the road between RB1 and RB6.

That and 6-9 seemed to be the sweetspot last year. I think I won from 7? maybe last year. Nothing wrong with going to the well again.

I took 1 mainly because I will be away alot during the draft and picking on an end will make things easier for me and anyone who helps me with picks.

I definitely like 1 better then 14

1 and 6 were my first two choices too....I can already tell it's going to be tough this year.

I will say though, that in AAA1 last year sR, yr, and I drafted 11,12,13, so that was our sweet spot.

FYI, I plan to pick yet tonight.

Thanks to culdeus for his assistance in setting up the mfl.

I believe the following set of scoring rules produces correct results. I have compared the resulting values for 2008 stats to those generated at fanball.com, and they appear to be consistent (and/or correct in the case of some inconsistencies). However, I encourage everyone to review these and challenge anything that looks off. Please see posts [2] & [3] for links to the rules from last year.

I must say I'm much happier with the scoring rules interface at mfl.com vs. Fanball. There seems to be more flexibility, and the setup is more intuitive. In the process of reconciling vs. Fanball, I've also noted that Fanball no longer shows week-by-week fantasy point totals for each player. They do show weekly stats and YTD points, but seem to have lost the capacity to show weekly points, which not only makes reconciliation difficult, but could be a significant constraint when free agent shopping during the season.

We'll want to keep the mfl.com database as current as possible during the draft (i.e., updated with each pick). Does anyone know if managers will be able to pick up their own players as they draft, or will someone with Commissioner privileges have to do that?

without looking at the talent available at this spot, I'll say that I am happy with it. I like to pick in the 2nd half, but not too close to the end. and #10 is just that.

What I was planning on doing was putting the picks in manually when I get a chance. I will close waivers to all owners so they only input picks through the draft system. Takes no time at all to input picks for people.

I may be changing jobs between now and september so I will have quite possibly nothing to do for a month anyways.

I set the start date of August 20 several weeks ago. That was the time to raise objections/concerns.

We have some people with limited availability over Labor Day weekend, and I want to get this done before then, if possible. A typical draft will take 2 weeks, and the decision to start now was prompted by the desire to finish before then.

I understand the concern about preseason injuries and uncertainties. That's a concern every year. The nature of the beast.
