complete RIFC draft (position grid at bottom)

RIFC Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

Firstly, I'd like to thank the great group of guys who kept this draft moving along well with queues and such; and of course our commish who sets up this great website and league system every year.

1. This year was my worst season by far for strategy. I think most managers have become familiar with the resources (FBG/DD and such) we use, so I just taped back into those, and thought mildly about which areas were weak points for me in previous years, and try to improve on those. In general, I find that I tend to stay active, and develop a good depth on my roster, especially at the WR and IDP positions, so I needed to focus on getting a stud QB, and a couple RBs that can handle the majority of the load. I was able to grab Peyton in round two, and I'm happy with the first three rbs that I drafted so yeah, I think the draft went off more or less to plan.

2. Favs: Leon Washington, and Devin Hester
Redo's: none yet

3. Smith32: big risk/reward players throughout, could be huge.
Culdeus: good depth, should be top 5.
LetterJ: Could it be the year my bro beats me out in the RIFC? Nah! but still looks like a playoff bound team to me.

4. Nothing... everyone came in well researched. Very little reaches, and very little poor picks.

5. I'd try to get more time off work... lol... no probably not. I just wish I coulda been more present for my picks, and I apologize again for the late rationals.

Thanks Guru, for setting this up. the draft had a very fast pace, nearly a bit too fast in the 2nd half.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
as always I had no specific player in mind that I really wanted. I simply pick the best value. In doing this, I always look at the available talent at certain positions. some rules:
a) draft 4 RBs in the 1st half of the draft. best thing would be that they are #1 or #2 behind an older or injury prone player. at the time I drafted them the picks looked good. 3 of the 4 still look good, only Julius Jones is a question mark.
b) draft a QB until round 6. the earlier the better, but without reaching. I got Romo in he 4th - check
c) draft #1 WRs that are capable of posting huge numbers and #2/#3 who see return duties. - check, check, check, ...
d) pick 2 defenses in the middle of the draft. check - I hope GB and MIA surprise this year.
e) get some elite IDPs early and force some others to reach - check, no check. I got them, but the run started much later.
f) don't draft a kicker and don't draft too many backup IDPs. valuable players at all these positions can be had off waivers every year. even in a league like RIFC. check in drafting no kicker. not sure if I get the talent I anticipate off waivers.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
favorite:
10.05 Percey Harvin - lots of upside, should return some balls too, can only outperform his draft position.
11.10 James Davis - with an aging Jamal Lewis struggling he may soon be starter for the Browns.
19.10 Nate Washington - currently injured, but latest reports indicate that he may be ready for week 1.
20.05 Brian Hartlone - looks like the starter for the Dolphins. with Pennington at QB he will see some deep balls.

do over:
6.05 Julius Jones - don't know his role yet, now that Edgerrin James signed. he may lose more playing time than I thought when I picked him.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I haven't looked much at other rosters during the draft. I only looked at positions still needed to fill. now after the draft, when I look at the offense players I don't see a team where I'd see an outstanding group of players. if I need to list 3 they would be
- Smith32 (because of MJD, Palmer, WRs)
- IAC (because of Turner, Peyton, WRs)
- Bags (because of the IDPs)

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
- that the run for WRs really happened. the RB situation was not as clear as in previous years. In general, receivers get utilized more. every team tries the wildcat offense. so personally I counted on a WR run, but I was not sure that it would happen.
- that again some teams stacked backup RBs that early.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
not much. I did not need to decide my draft position, which is often the reason why a draft turns out to be different. maybe I should have waited a bit longer until drafting IDPs. the problem this year was that we were the 1st league to draft and I had no idea when a run for a certain position will start.

good luck to all of you. give me a chance!

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
Last year, and in prior years, I’ve been weak at WR. Since that was never offset by particularly strong RB results, I thought I would focus more on WRs in the early rounds – even going WR/WR in the first two rounds if RBs were flying off the board.

As it turns out, I think I am starting the year with much higher quality WRs: Rany Moss, Berrian, Ginn, Steve Smith2, and even Nicks and James Jones could have value. My starting RBs of Jacobs and Jackson/Lynch should be adequate as long as they stay healthy. I’m not as deep at RB, but Faulk should be playable in a pinch, and Dominic Rhodes could have value if the other Buffalo RBs tank.

I also decided to defer on IDPs later than I have in past years. As a result, I feel like my IDPs are inferior to other teams, but I’m hoping that there will be reasonable F/A options to replace the crappiest of the bunch.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Don’t really have a favorite pick.

Perhaps I jumped on Matt Schaub too early, although I think he has the potential to reward me. Roethlisberger and Ryan didn’t go until round 8, so I might have been able to get similar value by waiting.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Must confess, I haven’t looked at other teams critically. I had enough trouble assessing my own squad.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
The early interest in WRs, relative to years past.

I also thought that KR/PR candidates were going earlier than in past years. I really didn’t think any of them offered exceptional value at the time they were drafted – and as a result, I don’t have anyone who is likely to derive material value from the return game.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
Start the draft a few days later, especially since we finished so fast. It was difficult to start the draft while away from home for my son’s wedding. As a consequence, I felt a bit out of synch in the early rounds.

RE 4: Yep, I trust him more than the average Joe for projections. I used to use a lot more sites for info but I had to scale by my research this year as I really have very little computer time. I really enjoy Bramel and Norton on IDP, and Herman on kickers too. They actually impress me more than Dodds.

Dodds' rankings are a function of how much poker he plays. The year he spent like 8 weeks at WSOP were just horrific 2007 I think. Might as well have gone with ESPN. I try to figure out how much time he spends on it, but lately I think he's been farming some of it out.

Wood is a guy I can't stand either personally or the way he projects players. The rest are solid. Norton > Bramel by a little bit.

Brief League Summary:

Thought draft went fast enough considering 14 teams and all. The first 3 rounds were almost just straight ADP which is also not out of the ordinary given how early the draft was held. Not enough time for people to independently come to their own conclusions on early draft picks, plus with teams really shielding their Vets in pre-season it's nearly impossible to really make that leap of faith on some guys. So people play it safe.

I always think these leagues can be broken up into 4 tiers fairly easily.

-Playoff locks (85%+)
-Playoff likely (70%+)
-Playoff unlikely (30%)
-Miss playoff lock (15%)

These leagues are often easier to project due to the fact that the available player pool is so small due to deep bench and league size. Even with welfare waiver system in place there often is not enough to make a big enough difference to someone in the 6 weeks before the waiver resets stop. I don't really recall anyone after Cassell last year that had an enormous impact. And it wasn't as if he was a super stud QB. Just a reasonable starter that really didn't do too much till late in the year.

So with that in mind there are always some really odd strategic moves being made. I do not think you can get away with drafting backups early here. The PPG you will lose letting top 100 players sit is just too high to make sense.

Also I think people think that because this is a 0ppr league that punting WRs is fine. Again it's a failure of VBD to think in such a manner. Especially with the level of talent available on the wire at WR at any point in the season. It's nearly impossible to find an up and comer with 75-80 WRs being held. That's over 3 a NFL team.

Playoff Locks in alphabetical order:

These teams should barring multiple injuries to key players make the playoffs.

culdeus - No shame in this. Ask Bonka, I do some horn tooting in our other league without any prompting. I think DAW has a chance to become the best RB this year. He's paired with a poo poo platter of backup RBs, but they all have enough upside to make a run. RB after RB12 is too much a crapshoot with RBBC and other carry situation. I spent 6 rounds between RB picks last year and 7 this year, and it worked out fine. The only team with comparable WR is Bonka.

I think I have the #1 and #2 overall IDP on the team and the rest are at least solid. TE being the only weak spot bothers me some, but one can not have it all. TE went a little early and hard here as it usually does and I passed on it again.

guru - This seems like the most well rounded team of all of them. No glaring weaknesses and enough depth around to cover for any issues. There also doesn't appear to be a portion of this team that can be really leaned on to go light on depth in crunch time. IDP perhaps is the strongest group of all and this could be the one. It's not clear who the WR3/Flex is here. I don't think shockey has the goods to make an everyweek starter. Really guru was hurt a lot by the WR run in the 5th. There was really no escaping it at that point.

One strategic error in my mind was taking Jackson in the 7th. Breaston made much more sense there being a returner in this format. Lynch misses a few games and plug in a different RB that gets some carries late, like either Taylor or something and shore up the WR group. Jackson will be nothing but waiver fodder by the time byes come along.

Still overall a very solid team up and down and it's hard to see how this team doesn't perform.

IAC -

Love this team. Clearly Bonka and I were upset to have him on the swing side of us as he gobbled up guys that we were trying to float on tons of occasions. Easily the best overall offense put together and perhaps by a large margin. The WRS are Value, value, value. Not a huge fan of Thomas as RB2, but if he takes kicks again he'll propel this team to supernova levels.

Not a huge fan of the IDP group. DJ williams was a guy I considered, but feel FBGs has him too high. Just another guy that has been so hyped over the years and has done nothing really. The rest of them just seem to me to be "situation" players and not "solid" players. Not that there is something inherently wrong with that it just warrants mentioning.

Went backup RB a little early in the 6th. I mean I guess Washington is an ok backup, but there were guys near his PPG that could have been had much, much later. Tell me someone like Santana Moss or Bryant, or Driver wouldn't have looked good with any number of round 10+ RBs.

Cracks me up he also went with the philly/tb combo.

This is an utter, mortal, lead pipe lock to make the playoffs. For reals.

Not criticizing this statement by any means, but, was just wondering what was meant by this:

"Cracks me up he also went with the philly/tb combo."

I didn't read about this anywhere, but figured maybe there was an inside joke, or thread about this that maybe I missed?

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Didn't know about this FBG website and don't use DD, maybe I'm one of the few that don't. Anyways, I had planned to go RB/WR my first two rounds and pretty much go by BPA and a little ADP from there on. Wanted to try waiting on a QB until I thought I'd land Brady and even though I didn't get him I took a QB about a round earlier than I would have liked. I also tried to scope out the good KR/PR players and had them on a list before the draft started. Sadly almost all of them went too early, although I did end up with Clifton Smith and I'm not sure if anyone else had looked at him. I waited on TEs since they are pretty deep this year and managed to grab one I liked. I knew I wanted to get solid IDPs since they do contribute a lot in this format and I think I grabbed 3 very solid LBs, a top DE, and possibly top DBs despite waiting on grabbing any. I also didn't want to grab any backup IDPs since they're too easy to grab mid season to fill in for byes and I feel holding onto RB/WRs is far more valuable.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

15.07 Chester Taylor - Really good value in the 15th round considering he's a solid RB on his own and would be a good RB2 if ADP goes down.

17.07 Clifton Smith - Grabbed him earlier than I would have liked, but he averaged over 9 PPG last season doing KR/PR. Will make a very nice spot starter if needed.

19.07 Brandon Meriweather - Possible top 8 DB despite being the 18th DB taken.

20.08 Sidney Rice - Could be a good red zone target for Favre, so I like the upside here.

3.07 Wes Welker - Hope I didn't take the wrong guy here and he puts up similar yardage and more TDs with Brady back. Rodgers was my 2nd choice.

4.08 Joseph Addai - Could end up being a bad pick if he gets hurt again and/or Brown takes over the majority of the work.

6.08 Jay Cutler - This will be wait and see how the Bears' offense plays. Will really kill me if he doesn't put up good numbers since I took him this early.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

IAC - I liked his team about 5-6 rounds into the draft. Has decent depth and some high upside guys.

Smith32 - Pretty potent offense if Palmer is good and Lewis puts up decent numbers as a RB3.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Backup QBs went a little early, too many IDPs went early, and some KR/PR went too early. Swing only drafted 1 QB (and I took 3). Other than that I can't remember anything else although I know there were other things I could list.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

I'd rather have the 9th pick looking back at how things went. I'm just hoping guys who haven't been healthy lately (SJax, Addai), are, and that Cutler and Hill at least form a solid QB rotation.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My offensive strategy was to pick a lot of return guys. People vastly underestimate their value. I knew IAC was high on them as well so I didn't want wait on some of them. For IDP guys, linebackers are overvalued compared to perennial stud DB's. My plan was to grab 1-2 great LB's and then fill in with DB's in later rounds.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I like Norwood at 6.1. They can't just keep ignoring him in Atlanta. Crayton at 13.14 was great value considering he'll be the #2 WR and be returning punts.

I wish I would've taken Coffee instead of Bulluck. Hated my Justin Smith pick since I could've gotten someone similar 3 round later.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

No teams really stick out. I certainly wouldn't consider any teams "locks" for the playoffs.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Guys drafting 2 TE's early. Other than that not much.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently? Nope.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you
able to execute as you had planned?

In the past I drafted solid but not spectacular teams that made
the playoffs but were not really championship contenders. This
year I decided to try to work in a few more risk/reward picks to
try to give myself at shot at having the best team in the end. I
have done well taking LBs in the mid rounds in the past - I think
they are "guaranteed value" because you can usually find some
guys that will reliably score 30 pts more than a waiver wire
LB/DB over the course of a season, and 2-3 of those can give
you a nice head-start over managers who are still buying lottery
tickets on RB/WR.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could
do over? Favorites - Ray Rice, Carson Palmer, Earl Bennett, and
Julian Peterson. Do-Overs - Jamal Lewis, Todd Heap (and
Tatupu might have been a slight reach).

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the
most (other than your own)?

I think s_R and IAC have solid squads.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Not much. Seemed to be a lot of solid picks, as usual. Some of
us bought into the "get your WR early this year" philosophy
(culdeus, Bonka and me), and others didn't (fugazi, Yokel, Bags,
and bmd). Will be interesting to see which strategy wins out.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Spend a little more time acquainting myself with the IDPs. If you
really knew what you were doing, you could probably make
some hay in that area. But, there are only so many hours in a
day, and that always ends up pretty low on the to-do list, so I
look to FFToday and FFToolbox for help.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I wanted to try something different this year. My draft strategy was to not use the cheat sheets. But rather rely on my own instincts and knowledge. Obviously I would have to check player news. And watch a lot of preseason. But for the most part I used last years charts and gut feelings. I guess I was able to execute this strategy. But only time will tell if this strategy should have been executed.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I guess my favorite pick is Tim Hightower at 8.07 Seems like great value to me. I think hes a better back than people give him credit for. Least favorite would be Bush at 3.08 But I felt like I had no other options.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Wiggs team seems like it could do some major damage. But the talent seems spread evenly throughout the league. Looks to be a tough season.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

The wideout run was a bit surprising. But little surprises me in this league anymore. You have to take some chances if you wanna win this thing. One mans reach is another mans steal.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

I wish I would have drafted at the front or the back. This was my first year to draft in the middle and I hated it. But I had little choice. So in the end I'm happy with the way I drafted,

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My plan was to get the best available player for the 1st 5 rounds. Starting in round 6 to pick up the best LBs for the next 4 rounds. I was able to execute this plan.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

Of course I love the AP pick. I think Warner can be huge again this season with Fitzgerald and Boldin. I really like Roddy White this season with Matty Ice having another year experience. Finally I like my LBs.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I like Eserel, Fugazi and Bonka

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

I was surprised with the amount of WRs that went early as well as people picking back ups at qb so early and Defenses at all.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

I would not have picked Stewart Bradley at all and I would have picked a defense much sooner. I would have also looked closer at the rules and realized that Special teams mean nothing in this league.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I went back and read my summary from last year - as I had recalled I put some lessons learned in my post. In that recap I pointed out that none of my drafted IDP's ended up at my team on the season end. My suggestion was to focus on depth instead of IDP's as tackles always show up on the WW. I did follow this as well as I could by holding off on getting an IDP until round 12. (Also in my recap from last year, on my SB winning squad I dropped 17 of my 24 draft picks - so we're probably over-emphasizing the importance of the draft, and I tried not to fret as much on my individual picks).

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

Because of my point about depth above, I'm guessing one of my 'reaches' may turn out to be my favority, although most will probably not pan out. Donald Brown in the 6th, Johnnie Lee Higgins in the 10th, Shonn Greene in the 15th, etc. - all these are essentially backups for my team but they have a lot of potential in case of injuries/role changes.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Looking briefly over the other rosters, I like the makeup of IAC's team, Guru's, and bmd (despite him picking the Steelers D in the 5th - yikes).

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

It was kind of irritating how little drop off there seemed to be between the beginning and end of round 2. Just look at Wigg's 2nd and 3rd round picks of Roddy White (who's right up there with Wayne/Jennings in the second high tier of receivers) as well as Kevin Smith who has the potential of being a top 10 back

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

If I had known Fitzgerald was going to be available 10th, I probably would have chosen that slot instead of 11th. I'm also thinking I may regret McFadden as my second RB.

despite him picking the Steelers D in the 5th - yikes

We will see. Their schedule is a joke. The Ravens aren't far behind them in pure ability but they have the Patriots and the Colts to deal with.

Looking at the guys taken in rounds 6 and 7 I only see a few that are great value and almost all are RB's which I already had 3 of. I saw little reason to draft IDP and too many WR/RB when I can get guys like Crayton at 13.14 or Chris Gamble at 19.14(would've been a top 30 IDP guy last year) I'd rather reach on a defense then get stuck playing roulette trying to pick a 2nd tier Team D.

It kinda underlines the things I think people overvalue in this league. People are taking way too many LB's early when there are a lot of DB's that are going to score just as much but will be available 5 rounds from when the LB would be taken.

Looking back on the draft I would've drafted a TE instead of Sproles at 3.14 and went RB/RB in my Round 5/6 picks.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My strategy was to get one of what I considered the top-6 RBs. There is certainly room for argument as to whether LT is one of those, but that's why I chose the draft spot I did. I've already mentioned my strategy with Brady in his rationale. I have to admit that the trade kindof messed w/ my strategy, as I'm feeling rather weak at WR and also RB. Brady in 2 (sortof) forced me into catchup mode w/ WR and RB in the next several rounds, and I never really felt like I did get caught up.
Beyond the top players I wanted to get some quality IDPs. That has served me well in past years. I wanted to hold back on DL and TE, as those positions tend to have guys available, especially if you don't commit to the top tier (which I didn't). Again, I'm not thrilled w/ the results, especially after reading some more recent news.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I hate Brady, but I'm happy to have him. He can be a difference maker for me. I'm hoping for good things from Bradshaw, because I'm likely to need him. McKelvin has a good chance to be a top-scoring DB or even IDP. I had Celek on my radar from the get-go, so I guess that went according to plan.
I took Hixon way too early. Same can be said for Mendenhall. Wish I would've gotten another KR/PR DB....such as Wilson instead of Briggs in 9th.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Certainly all have weaknesses, which is to be expected. I suppose IAC and Smith32 stand out as having good balance of players. Early on I was gauging my own draft against IAC and he clearly has me beat in nearly every aspect of the first 6 rounds.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Pretty standard stuff. I thought that the backup QBs were going really early. A couple have mentioned my lack of a backup as a surprise. As I mentioned in my Brady rationale, I didn't really consider him to be a huge risk despite his injury. I didn't want to spend a middle round selection on a QB who I expect to start one game. Either risky or foolish, depending on your outlook. By the time I started to think I should get a backup I looked at what was left and felt like I could get something just as good(bad) off the waiver wire should it come to that.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

I could've probably dropped down to a later pick and still gotten a top notch RB. Then maybe I wouldn't have needed to make a trade to get Brady, or I would've had other options. Other than the bad picks I've already mentioned, I don't think I would've done much differently.
Had I read a few more articles I might've seen half my lineup on various "bust" predictions and made some other similar picks. All in all I think my team is just OK. An injury to my top couple guys would be devastating and it may require an injury to one of my backup's starters to make me a viable contender.

Good luck to all!

Looking at the standings, here are a couple observations after week 9 with only 4 weeks left to play:

Yokel - The two time defending champ looks to be out of the race for this year. McFadden's loss really wasn't the biggest issue for him, but WR production seems to have missed the mark (Megatron).

IAC - Maybe it's true that no team can draft straight into the playoffs, but, it's looking like I might be set to finish 1st in regular season performance for the 3rd time since 2005. Last year was the deepest I got into the playoffs with a finals loss... hoping to improve upon that.

Smith32/Culdeus - Had both these teams rated to finish high. I'm not surprised to see them sitting tied for 2nd. Both have been on a late season surge.

Letter_J - I had my bro's team picked to be a force, but it's slid down to around 8th currently. Hoping I don't have to face him in week 1 of the playoffs.

Fugazi - Has struggled as of late, but never count out a team that has Brees at QB!
