0 Subject: RIFC 2009: Recap

Now that the regular season is over, I'll start the recap thread while everything is still fresh in our minds.

This thread is for a recap of all of the 2009 RIFC leagues, including the AAA leagues and the AA league. Any manager is welcome to post any post-season reflections on the season - what went well, what didn't, what lessons were learned, etc. Also, if there are any rule changes that anyone thinks should be considered for next year, please suggest them here. That will make them easier to recall next summer.

QL Commissioners - thanks for your work during the season. Your diligence is appreciated. Please post your final standings (regular season and playoffs) here, so that I can easily find them next summer when invitations and qualifications for 2010 need to be prepared.

This year we had leagues hosted on two platforms. The RIFC and one of the AAA leagues were hosted at myfantasyleague.com. I know that I found the system to be very stable, flexible, and capable, even though the setup can be very confusing. I intend to keep the RIFC at this site next year.

I know that the league hosted at Fantrax had a lot of early difficulties, and am unclear as to whether all features were fully resolved without manual intervention.

I am willing to consider putting all RIFC leagues on myfantasyleague.com next year, perhaps with a voluntary contribution to cover the cost. But I'd like to hear from those in the Fantrax leagues about their thoughts on how that system ultimately fared.

I felt it was a really good regular season for fantasy. Nothing too too wild, and a lot of the same old stuff in this format. The RB's dropped like flies occasionally, and the Top Qb's played like Top Qb's.

My team luckily played consistently every week, scoring a team low of 118.96 points, and a team high of 169.68. Unfortunately however, I felt the injury bug a bit: M.Turner, P.Thomas, D.Jackson, L.Washington, C.Cooley, T.Suggs, C.Horton etc, but since I drafted early at the "skills" it didn't feel like my team was too desperate. The last couple weeks have of course been a little worse, while finding very little on the Waiver Wire.

The picks that really stepped it up and helped me get here were: D.Jackson, Philly D, and my LB crew: DJ Williams, C.Lofton, C.Session.

My only pick that I felt really stunk it up, without pointing to injury was Eddie Royal. Boy he really failed to impress me this year.

I think my team now sits equal to any other team that has made it into the playoffs, because now any irregularity will lead to a potential win/loss.

Even though Fantrax had features like live detailed scoring, commissioner powers like retroactively making chages to rosters, proactive in fixing issues, and were responsive to most our needs, the fact that we could not use two distinct lineups for doubleheaders, the various glitches, like not having the playoff bracket ready, that occurred during the year, and the other bugs that "popped up" during the year do not make Fantrax a viable option for 2010. That being said, I do not want to shut the door completely on them. I want to run a league there next year to see if they are a viable option for 2011.

Leaving some notes here for next year.

Some items to consider/reconsider:

1. Assuming stat corrections should be automatically applied during the regular season, should that also apply during the postseason? This issue is that these are not usually available until Thursday, and playoff waivers are processed on Wednesday, while the opening games typically are played on Thursday night. Creates the potential for some a rather sudden playoff schedule reversal.

2. Should head-to-head continue to be used as a standings tiebreaker, ahead of total points?

3. We can reconsider whether team defenses should still be included. This has been discussed before, but it never hurts to raise the issue.

Something else to consider for next year would be to:
A. lower the number of bench slots
B. cap the number of players rosterable at a position
C. require a certain number of IDP bench (which would have to be enforced manually)

I'm not sure how other people feel, but I think the bench is a little too deep while the free agent list is too thin. It's possible to just hoard RBs right now since there's really no reason to carry extra IDP on your bench while the free agent list is bare of anyone worth grabbing after the first few weeks(I did this since I ended up with no real 3rd RB). Right now, unless you were pretty lucky with the way things turned out, one injury can really crush your team and shortening the bench somehow would free up a few players to float around as free agents.

This kind of boils down to personal preference though. I'm sure some would prefer it to stay as is and if you don't have a really good draft or get hot waiver pickups, you could be at a huge disadvantage when a stud misses even a few weeks. But since trading almost never happens in RIFC, I'd rather see there be a little more talent available each week in free agency so that teams aren't crippled by injuries in a re-draft and hopefully keep it more fun all around.

RE: #3 point #3 DST

Personally I LIKE DST as I like trying to look at the matchup possibilities (if I have 2 DST). Also, I
think that the high point DST events -- INTS, SACKS, FF, FR, DST TD are some of the more
exciting and game changing events and should be rewarded to fantasy teams. (You can also
draft a WR expecting that he will get most of his points on KR/PR runs and TD's -- Cribbs for
example.)

What we need to think about is how many points are we expecting from the DST. I was bored
today so I did some math -- bear with me -- or not! (NOTE: I am sure I missed some scores --
I did it by hand using the MFL data...)

Up to week 15 there were 420 DST scores (14 games by 30 teams).
5 teams had from 13.86 to 14.78 as their average
6 had 12+
5 had 11+
3 @ 10+
6 @ 9+
2 @ 8+ (KC/TB)
2 @ 7+ (CLE/DET)
1 @ 6+ (JAX)

There were 8 negative (!) individual game scores:
-3 (CHI)
-2 (CHI/SEA/DET/DET)
-1 (PGH/TB/TEN)

There were 93 scores of 5+ or below, including the negative scores above. This is a percentage
of 93/420 = 22%. 32 (1/3) of these were the 5+ level.

There were 53 DST scores above 20 points. Of those, 8 had scores of 30+, with the high of 46
(SF week 4 vs Rams). Four teams did not record a 20+ score (JAX/#30 rank; DET/#29;
WASH/#23; Bills/#14 w/11 average -- the oddball stat.)

The most 20+ scores were 5 times by JETS; 4x by DEN; 3x by NOS, IGGLES, BAL, GBP.

Fifty three 20+ scores = 52/420 = 13%

So what we need to decide is how many points we anticipate as "normal" for a DST. In a 14 team
league a manager can also get 2 or even 3 DST to pick from for matchups/byes. I find it fun to
match a DST with a QB/WR combo. It is another thing to figure out. Of course, then they have to
play the game... and often a good DB (Revis) shuts down a WR without getting us some points but
that is another issue altogether.

In sum (?), I do not think that the DST points are out of line with the other positions. It also gives
us another option to make plans. I actually think that the PA and Yardage Against points are quite
the penalty, especially with the high scoring offenses today. Also a garbage time TD against a
DST can ruin a perfectly good day... I would welcome less severe PA and yardage penalties...

So that's my food for thought!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!

what would be the point of removing team defense? it's a pretty big part of mid-draft strategy. it's been a part of this league since year one. this league is close to perfect as it is, so why would any major tweaking be necessary?
