I am currently playing in a Keeper league with some friend (none are gurupies) Here is the situation:

The rules we play are you keep up to 4 players each year and the players are kept 1 round earlier then they were picked in the previous season. (ex. a player picked in the 2nd round becomes a 1st round keeper) Any player picked up off free agency, regardless if they were previously draft would become a 13th round keeper. For example if I picked a player and released him it doesnt matter where I picked him, he would be a 13th round keeper for the team that picks him up, if they so choose to keep them. What would happen if a team drops a player 1 week, then decides to pick them back up a week later, after clearing waivers. Would they be considered a 13th round keeper, or go back to the original spot they were drafted? This has brought up alot of controversy so I would like to get some unbiased opinions.

Thanks in advance.

I think the temporary FA status doesn't change anything. Your rules deal with the beginning and ending status of a player and nothing about the middle. If the player was drafted in X round in the beginning and is kept, then his place for next year is Round X-1.

Maybe I worded it wrong, but if what happens is if I picked a player- lets say Brian Westbrook, and I decided to waive him when he had his head injury, then you pick him up. You could keep westbrook as a 13th round keeper next season. Now lets say I waive Brian Westbrook after his head injury, he sits as a FA for a couple days, then I reconsider picking him up because he may be back for the playoff run. Do I keep him as a 13th rounder, or do I keep him as a 1st rounder?

Ah, I see. Well, I'd think if a different manager picks him up, he's just like a regular FA. Otherwise, you'd value a player based upon what someone else valued him at, and that doesn't appear to be fair.

13th rounder.

He's clearly gone through the waiver process and is no different than any other FA at that point.

In fact, as I look at one of my league's (keeper) available FAs, I see Ronnie Brown, Larry Johnson, LenDale White, Derrick Ward, Darren McFadden, and plenty of other players who, at the start of the year, would seem ridiculous to still be available. However, the playing of games has changed things and nobody wants those guys at this point, just like nobody wanted Westbrook... at least those who weren't thinking long-term.

A rule you could institute for next year would be that any DRAFTED player that is picked up as a FA and is designated as a keeper must be kept two rounds later than the round he was drafted.

So, a first-round draft pick that is dropped, clears waivers, and is then picked up as a FA and kept would need to be kept as a 3rd round pick. In this manner, the player does not become an obvious keeper, like a 13th-round Westbrook, but the round he's kept at still reflects that he landed as a FA during the year.

In the Rotoguru Keeper 14 league, we instituted an IR slot, and have revised our rules a little on how that IR slot should be used to avoid issues like you mentioned.
