Subject: A New York/New Jersey Super Bowl?

Are you kidding me? Somebody please explain the non-sensical rationale of the leagues owners to place a Super Bowl in an uncovered and guarandamteed-to-be-freezing northern city like New York/East Rutherford?

If you can't enjoy an American football game in cold weather you're probably someone who prefers watching soccer, anyway. Or maybe cricket.

I think it does potentially alter the outcome of the game to have it be played in what could potentially be snowy conditions.

What does it matter? Its two teams on the field in equal conditions. Are you saying that the logic that a team like the Colts or Saints would come in and be slowed down by the cold conditions? And thats not fair to them? Don't you think that currently its a disadvantage for the Giants, Bears, Steelers type teams that play in bad weather and then have to go play on a fast track of a dome or whatever?

I agree with GO pretty strongly here. If the rational of post 3 is to be considered, why not move all playoff games to domes then?
Football should be considered an outdoor sport just as much as it should be considered an indoor sport, and the two best games that I have ever watched live were in snowy conditions in Pittsburgh and Green Bay. Awesome.

I don't think there's any inherent advantage to any team by playing in temperate weather - maybe if it were hot weather. However, it is an inherent disadvantage to some teams to have to play in cold weather.

So there is not a disadvantage for a running, defensive, grind it out type of cold weather team i.e. the Bears - to go play in a dome vs. say the Colts in the Super Bowl?

I think it is great that the Super Bowl is coming to the area. The possible weather conditions will be the story line for sure. Not necessarily a bad thing. League championships, just as important since it decides who makes the SB, have been played in that weather from time to time.
The NFL waived their average temp 50 degree requirement for just this one time but I can see this being a test case and opening up the possiblilty of future Super Bowls going to cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, DC, or even famed Lambeau Field. I think if the Super Bowl is going to be played on neutral fields, it should be moved around the league, similar to baseball's All-Star Game.
The Giants/Jets have been struggling to find a corporate sponsor for the venue currently dubbed "New Meadowlands Stadium". Not that they need money but this should help.

guru's blurb... On the surface, playing the 2014 Super Bowl in an outdoor stadium in northern NJ sounds a bit looney. But maybe not so much. New York City will provide a good venue for the weekly hoopla leading up to Sunday. The corporate suites at the stadium will all be enclosed. The game will be the usual sellout, regardless of weather potential. (Whether all those seats are actually filled remains to be seen.) The world will still watch on TV, without regard to locale. So the only issue would seem to be that adverse weather might impact game play. If so – so what? Some of the playoff games leading up to the Super Bowl could be played in cold weather sites in January. Why not the Super Bowl itself?

Good news for New Jersey.
Being from Cleveland, I don't see any problems with having a cold-weather Super Bowl. In fact, this is almost certain to cause more real fans to watch than (literally) fair weather fans.

I tell ya, I've heard a lot of real fans say their "Super Bowl" is championship Sunday and they hardly pay attention on Super Bowl Sunday since its more of a show and a holiday than a real game.

Exactly.
My best memories of watching Browns football growing up are those cold-ass days when the wind whips around the stands and there is a collective "brrrr!" from everyone around you. A shared experience that those basking in the stands in Arizona, LA, or Miami simply can't understand.
When you go to a game like that, you are a FAN. You're there to see the game and scream yourself hoarse while you sip rapidly-cooling hot chocolate between plays.
And you'll go home to unthaw over the course of several hours and all your friends wish they'd been there too.
