- [330592710] Wed, Dec 29, 2010, 11:18

Now that the regular season is over, I'll start the recap thread while everything is still fresh in our minds.

This thread is for a recap of all of the 2010 RIFC leagues, including the AAA leagues and the AA league. Any manager is welcome to post any post-season reflections on the season - what went well, what didn't, what lessons were learned, etc. Also, if there are any rule changes that anyone thinks should be considered for next year, please suggest them here, even if they were already mentioned elsewhere. That will make them easier to recall next summer. Of course, we may have even bigger changes to consider if the NFL moves to an 18 game schedule - and if there is any sort of work stoppage.

QL Commissioners - thanks for your work during the season. Your diligence is appreciated. Please post your final standings (regular season and playoffs) here, so that I can easily find them next summer when invitations and qualifications for 2011 need to be prepared.

Just wanted to get a few things percolating as far as rule changes for next season:

1. Drop team D and add a 7th IDP. Team D is too erratic and the scoring system doesn't really provide a lot of guidance to board members for their leagues. It would also balance lineups with 7 offensive players, 7 defensive players, and one special teamer.

2. Add more value to the defensive line position by requiring a 2nd DL. If rule 1 is adopted, I think requiring 2 DLs, 2 LBs, 2 DBs, and a flex would be awesome.

Beezer, what does this mean: "the scoring system doesn't really provide a lot of guidance to board members for their leagues"?

I would like to see IDP's expanded as well, but not at the expense of Team D. Keep the Team D says I. Add another DL, another LB, and another DB. Fine by me.

I'll repeat what I said a few weeks back in the RIFC thread: let's use the same criteria for playoff inclusion, but seed the playoffs by Points For ranking. It doesn't make ours a points league. A manager can still make the playoffs with a superior W/L % even if his PF is low, he/she'd just get a low seed once the playoff brackets are set.

Congrats, Judy. I assume you're the first female to qualify and that's worth acknowledging.

You're right MC, that isn't very clear.

One of the stated purposes of the RIFC is to provide a yardstick for where players are going in drafts. I don't think the way our team defense scoring is set up that it really helps with this since we include yardage and there are all the IDPs mixed in.

Also, I'm not a fan of team D so I bring this up whenever I can anyway.

First off, Congrats to all the winners!

I had mentioned in the RIFC thread about adding points for tackles for loss.

Thanks MC, but the first year I was in AA I think the winner was also a female...so I would be the second and I'll take that! I had a nice team.

Rules:
Love DST although it can be a crap shoot in terms of how they will do
Would like to see less stiff negatives for yardage and points against for DST -- seems really tough to get any points unless you do special stuff Iike INT, sacks, D TDs
Need to add blocked kicks for individual players
Like the idea of tackles for loss
Keep tackles by all players
I am not sure that adding a ton of IDP's is a good idea -- thins the pool too much and there is already a thin pool for picking up midseason offensive players. 6 IDP is just right to enable you to make decent pick ups during the season.
I'm neutral here but anyone have thoughts about the offensive flex being QB, RB, WR, TE? A total of 7 players with one of each minimum, with a QB max at 2. It could make for some creative choices both drafting and setting starting lineups. But it also might be too big of a change???

"One of the stated purposes of the RIFC is to provide a yardstick for where players are going in drafts"

I think this is always going to apply more to skill position players than to defenses or idp's.

The problem with DL value is that most of their points come from sacks, and sacks are hard to come by (especially for some of the better DE's who get double-teamed all the time). I don't think adding a second DL would increase their value. You'd just have one more guy on your team who will score only 1 or 2 points on Sunday. I wouldn't want to see a DB or LB slot lost in the pursuit of adding a DL.

Tackle for loss might be a good way to increase DL value (I haven't looked at any TFL stats).

There may always be a problem in fantasy football where on-field production doesn't translate to fantasy points. A great lock-down corner that offenses avoid all day is never going to score well. DL that get double-teamed aren't going to score well. Then you have players like, say Polamalu, who may only get 4 tackles in a game, but still have a big impact on the game in the way they affect the offensive play-calling. Then you have some chump cornerback who racks up 10 tackles because he can't cover receivers effectively...

I'm still looking forward to the day where we can draft offensive linemen!

Holt -- nice idea to honor the OL guys, but what kind of stats would they be getting? FR, FF, pass def and the occasional INT are all I can think of...

sorry for getting off-topic.

no idea Judy- maybe start them with a certain number of points, then deduct for sacks allowed. possibly factor in yards gained. Not sure of all the stats that are currently tracked for OL. I'd like to experiment with it sometime but no one that I know of offers a fantasy system that tracks OL in any way.

RE Holt:

If your looking for a "realistic" football experience, that includes O-Line play, managerial play calling, front office team management... look no further than this great game:

Strat-O-Matic

Both Electro and I play in a "Dynasty" keeper league, and Letter_J has as well.

I don't think anyone can find anything more realistic. Great Board game to Computer conversion. The only thing some people may not like about the game, is part of what gives it some personality... it's not "live" like fantasy. It's based on previous years.

I would support adding tackles for loss as the same value as a sack. Why should a QB tackled for a 1 yard loss be worth 4 times as much as an RB tackled for a 1 yard loss?

I ran some quick numbers on the impact of the change on scoring this year.

Current 1v14 gap 1v28 gap
DL 34.5 52.5
LB 18.5 42.5
DB 16 26.5
TFL=3 1v14 gap 1v28 gap
DL 51 81.5
LB 36 61
DB 15.5 26.5

Sure thing.

The first column of numbers is the total point difference at each position between the top scorer and the #14 scorer for weeks 1 through 16 this season according to MFL. The second column is the total point difference between the #1 and #28 scorers at each position.

The top set of numbers is based on the current scoring system. The bottom set of numbers is based on the same system with an additional 3 points for each tackle for loss.

RE 15

That is why I brought it up. I was watching football, and seeing players getting stuffed in the backfield and the impact it had on the game. 2nd and 4, runner gets stuffed for a 2 yrd loss. The % of converting 3rd down is much lower. But the player gets 1 point for tackle. A CB blows his coverage, taclkes the player after a 30 yrd gain, gets one point for tackle. The purpose of fantasy football is to award points for production on the field, and to manage the better performers. This will put a little more research into adding IDP's, which to me, adds to the fun.

As for a recap, this year had incredible competitive balance. Over the last 4 weeks of the regular FF season, I scored over 150 points, but was 4-4. Finished with the second highest points total, but was 12-14. Lost two games to Twilson by a combined score of .24, one win of mine being reversed by scoring adjustments. Other than Bonka, there was no team that was so superior to the others. I took risk/reward type players, and it payed off for the most part. Percy Harvin was one of my best picks during the season in that regard. He had an amazing run, until playoff time, where the migrains reared their ugly head. Another player like that was Dwayne Bowe. When I picked him, I told IAC that I was happy with the pick, and he just gave me a face like, "what were you thinking"? The Cassel injury came up at playoff time, making him less of a performer, but during the year, he had an amazing run. Aaron Rodgers was maybe a stretch in the eyes of most managers, but he played amazing. Only Vick was a better option at QB IMO. But he also got injured come playoff time. The pick I would love to do over was #6, Jared Allen. I learned the IDP's should never be taken early. I wasted a pick there. Another do over would be the MaGahee pick. It was between him and Thomas Jones. Jones never gets any respect.

Once again, congrats to all the winners, and those who are advancing. Thanks to Guru for this whole league. I play in a few leagues, but this one is the one that I like the most. Looking forward to next year, enjoy the NFL playoffs everyone.

IAC's RANT / Recap of RIFC 2010

Again the regular season went "OK" for me (I believe I have 2 First place finishes, and 2 Fifth place finishes), but I wasn't able to take it all the way. At least I took out my bro in the first round for bragging rights.

How did the ole draft go?

1st round: SJax - underwhelming... but still an every week start.
2nd round: Austin - same as above.
3rd round: Colston - ditto
4th round: V.Davis - again
5th round: R.Bush - injury leads to drop.
6th round: Cutler - Crazy highs/lows, ready for the roller coaster? Required finding a suitable alternative.
7th round: Brandon Jacobs - lost his job before the season began, ready to ride the pine?
8th round: Cadillac Williams - Can't trust this guy as a starter.
9th round: D.Hester - My 1st actual "GOOD" pick of the draft?
10th round: Eagles D - Started the year amazingly as expected... but couldn't keep the sacks/pressure as the season ran on.
11th round: John Carlson - waiver fodder. What ever happened to that explosive Seahawks offense?
12th round: Trent Cole - 1st IDP, and a true DL stud! Too bad he puttered out the 2nd half.
13th round: Chad Henne - Who knew how much a mess the Miami QB situation would become.
14th round: Mike Thomas - 2nd Steal of the draft... He's another Davon Bess type player.
15th round: Chad Greenway - STUD! my 2nd IDP, and anchored the LB core all year. (pats himself on the back, best "mistaken" pick of the draft... meant to take EJ Henderson).
16th round: Roman Harper S - Was great while he was healthy. Then, later dude.
17th round: Laron Landry S - Like above... but was INCREDIBLE when healthy. Then IR.
18th round: DQuel Jax - High risk... meant ended up being wasted pick. Don't regret the risk however, his reward if healthy was too high.
19th round: S.Cooper, LB - Meh. Looking for a solid LB. Was ok, but quickly got replaced.
20th round: Larry Johnson, RB, WAS - Predicted that Portis wouldn't be able to stay healthy, but picked the wrong backup.
21st round: Todd Heap - Not a bad option this late, needed to head to the wire to fill wholes however.
22nd round: Manningham - not a reliable every week start, but a good bench option. Amazing value this late.
23rd round: Polamalu - again, great value, health concerns lead to drop.
24th round: R.Gould K - a kickers a kicker.

RIFC AAA1 recap for Crazy 88s:

What worked:
- taking the 14 slot with the new drafting order
- waiting on RB2 to take Wayne (2.1), Jennings (3.1), and Gates (4.1) while still getting Bradshaw (5.14)
- several mid and late rounders: Hester (6.1) ,LT2 (10.1), Mason (11.14), Pats D (15.14) and Mike Thomas (22.1)
- being extremely active in pickups: Tolbert, Gronkowski (picked him up twice and those were his two great games!), and Janikowski were huge for me at the right times, and several others filled some critical gaps
- waiting on QBs worked since my committee was solid enough until I traded for Big Ben for the last half of the season

What didn't:
- DeAngelo in the first was a big bust
- drafting Britt instead of Tampa Mike Williams, then dropping Britt before he blew up
- IDPs were a weakness for me this year as drafting D.J. Williams and Ruud so early didn't work as they were solid but unspectacular
- trading for Gore as I got four good games from him before he was lost for the season
- starting lineup decisions for the most part as I consistently left points on the bench all season
- schedule strength as I was #2 in power rank during the regular season yet nearly missed the playoffs

Very happy to have won an RIFC league for the third time and get another crack at the big trophy next year!

I made a lot of moves this season, and as always there were a couple of real backfires. When your transaction volume is high, you're going to turn over some players you'll regret. I've gotten used to that. In RIFC, though, I had a net gain from making acquisitions. Acquisitions that helped a good bit included Steve Johnson; Stefan Logan; Umenyiora (at first) and then Abraham (for the playoff run); and some guy called Vick. I snapped up the Giants Defense when they were dropped and they were excellent most of the season. I tried the same move with Reggie Bush and wound up holding him for 13 weeks and not starting him once. He was a bum this year. IAC was right to drop him. Sometimes it's hard to overcome the psychological effect of a guy's name.

My RB's really underperformed this season (in my opinion), ultimately scoring 5.72 combined in the final game. My first pick overall, Michael Turner, scored one TD through the season's first 6 weeks. I tossed his name out in the RIFC Discussion thread as a trade candidate and received no interest at all. From Weeks 7-14, however, he was in double digits every week but 1 and scored 10 TD's. I took him with the 9th pick in the draft and he finished as the 9th highest scoring RB. He outpointed Ray Rice and S-Jax, who were drafted ahead of him. But Hillis, McFadden, Charles, McCoy, and Foster all put up more points and went much later. I continue to believe in taking RB's in round 1, if you can get one of the best. Around pick 6, however, they start to really thin out and become less reliable. My other starting RB for half the season, Joseph Addai, eventually sat out 8 straight games and took up space on my bench. I dumped him for the playoffs because I thought he'd be useless to my team with that nerve injury--a fumble waiting to happen. But as it turned out he doubled the output of my Week 16 starters. Fantasy football is funny like that.

My WR's really clicked for much of the second half of the season. They carried my team and ensured I was scoring respectably each week, even with mediocre RB's. Steve Johnson was a great waiver addition, even though Buffalo's offensive production tapered off significantly by the end of the season. He gave me a 4th solid option to start at WR through the end of the bye weeks and while Santonio worked himself into Pro Bowl form (he almost got there).

Witten was a beast and looks like he'll finish with the #1 TE ranking (#2 behind Gates in ppg).

Easily the most significant thing I did this season was to put in a waiver claim for Mike Vick. My second choice on waivers that week was Michael Spurlock, who I got in round 2 anyway. Imagine the difference between my team if I'm starting Flacco (good) rather than Vick (All Pro). That's 10.5 additional ppg. Vick was unbelievable and I think it's not a stretch to consider him as the #1 overall fantasy pick in 2011 (assuming he remains with Philly).

IDP's: I drafted poorly and found replacements on the wire. I do this every year and usually have great success with it. This indicates to me that there are too many good IDP available as free agents. I'd like to see us require more IDP's in our starting lineup. There are so many injuries to IDP’s each year that the position requires vigilance and consideration each week. You can never rest on your laurels at IDP, as it seems players get hot and then cool off quickly. The guys I finished the season with were better than average, but I missed out on some hot free agents early on. Takeo Spikes was a renaissance man this year, and James Farrior was really productive despite being in his mid-30’s. Jamar Chaney was getting some hype when Bradley went down a few weeks back and lived up to it when he scored a 16 in his first week as a starter.

I never spent as much time thinking about kickers before like I did this year. This position felt like one of my greatest failures. Don't know what the final statistical breakdown would show (I'd be interested to see it), but I fear I had one of the lowest aggregate PK scores of anyone in the league.

My draft was pretty good in my book, but there were some misses including Steve Smith (CAR) in the third, Kolb in the 6th, and every pick from round 19 on (IDP's and TM DEF's). I drafted Leon Johnson in the 9th and lost patience with him too soon; by week 13 he was consistently scoring in double digits. Stupid Seahawks and their stupid ineptitude on offense. I could have used him late. My best picks were Witten at 5.09, Flacco at 7.09 (although I hardly used him), and Amendola at 14.06. Amendola finished as the number 7 WR (11th in ppg) thanks almost wholly to his return duties and a stretch of 3 straight games where he scored.

I started the season with a score of 71.66 in Week 1. That’s probably the worst score I’ve ever had in this format—by a lot. And I lost both of my games deservedly. In weeks 7, 11, and 13 I went 2-0. Twice I went 0-2. Every other week I was 1-1. That’s the definition of a middle of the pack team. My team was 6th in the standings and had the 5th highest points for. I mean, it wasn’t a great team. But I improved a lot as the season went on and had my highest 2 scores in Weeks 14 and 15. Against Fugazi for all of the marbles, neither team seemed to want it very much. I scored 126 and probably shouldn’t be champion with that score. But his team let him down more, and here I sit on the throne. I’ll keep playing and drafting and at some point I’ll pull down a brilliant draft again. Hopefully next year in this league.

I forgot about the new drafting. Has anyone looked at the results?

Here is the average finish (regular season) for each draft position in the 4 RIFC leagues from best to worst:

9, 2, 8, 4, 3, 6, 12, 5, 1, 10, 11, 14, 13, 7

The playoff winners came from the 9 slot twice, the 5 slot, and the 14 slot. Runners-up came from the 12 slot twice, the 1 slot, and the 14 slot.

Overall, it looks like it's been pretty successful in smoothing out the distribution compared to the serpentine draft order.

Can anyone tell me what happened to my brilliant insight from post 23 in this thread? I'm pretty certain I posted something. Did I offend someone?
