0 Subject: NFL overtime rules different during post season

I was hoping to see an OT game this past wild card weekend to see the post season version of the OT rules play out.

In the past the only difference between a regular season and post season OT was that the post season OT plays out until a winner is determined where a regular season can still end in a tie.

Now the rules in effect for the post season change. If the team that gets first possession of the game gets a field goal, the other team is guaranteed a possession, and after that, the game only continues in sudden death mode if the teams are still tied (i.e. that team kicks a FG also). If the team with first possession scores a TD or gets a safety or pick-6 scored upon them, game over. It the team with first possession does not score otherwise (downs, punt, or turnover) the game is now played under "sudden death" rules.

I believe the NFL has defined a possession as beginning when you are being kicked to. So if there is a turnover and loss of possession by the receiving team on either the initial kick off or the FG ensuing kick off, that counts. I also recal reading that under the scenario where the second team is guaranteed a complete possession, regardless of the condition where 15:00 of game time may have elapsed.

I've heard alot of talk this week where a coach may play the OT differently under cases where they start out with the ball they may be more apt to go for it on a 4th and short inside the 10, but I'm sure they would all play it safe on 4th down. I still think you'd want the ball if you win the toss, even under windy conditions. If the first possession ends in a FG, it really gives the opponent an "advantage" they did not have before for their first possession since they basically are in 4 down mode the entire way down the field.

I am not sure I like this version any better or worse than the regular season rules. I'd much rather see the post season go a full quarter of OT with the winner being decided by who leads after that quarter, and then if still tied, continue the game from that point forward (like it was between the 1st and 2nd quarter) as sudden death.

Still better than the college.

Oh, I believe the reason the NFL does not want to do anything different with the regular season OT rules is 'encouragement' from the networks to keep the games under 3 1/4 hours. They do not want games overlapping too much into the next game.
