0 Subject: Can't Stand the Patriots Thread

I'm so glad they lost yesterday. Watching the season unfold, I thought they were prohibitive favorites to win it all. I was really impressed with the Jets' defense yesterday. Not many teams are able to do that to New England's passing attack. The last time somebody bottled up Tom Brady in that way in a big game was Super Bowl 42.

Just tired of the Patriots year in and year out running over everyone. I recognize their management skill in using players that can do the job for less money, and scheming better than their opponents. But I just can't stand them. They just get under my skin. I don't have a horse in the race; I spend my whole season rooting for my fantasy players and for the Pats to lose every game.

Get a haircut, Brady.

the funny thing about the Pats is that for the first 40 years of their franchise history, they were largely irrelevant.

then Drew Bledsoe got hurt, and the Pats lucked into a benchwarmer who turned out to be a stud.

three Super Bowls in four years, and other than losing in one of the biggest Super Bowl upsets in history, they haven't won a Super Bowl since 2004. granted, that's only a half-dozen years ago, but i really think this is a franchise on the decline, and once Brady is gone, where will they be?

No team has to be a franchise in decline for very long in the NFL. I think Pioli and Bellichick have a legitimate system for evaluating talent, managing the salary cap and contracts, and making draft pick trades that benefit them (where they really excel) and as long as those two are around, the team will never be more than a season away from a deep playoff run.

It will hurt when Brady retires, and they'll never match his production with another QB, especially one they draft (since they never get a Top 10 pick). But they will probably find a way to shift the offense towards their strengths and win games that way. They always do that. That's what they do best.

that said... i think rex ryan is a pompous arse that enables his team to act similarly. i dislike both the jets and patriots but based on the run up to the game on sunday i just wanted someone to shut up the Jets.

hopefully the steelers can do that ;)

As a Pats fan myself... I gotta say I was pretty let down by their loss at first.

But then I started to think about those moves we'd done in the previous years... and to say that the 13-3 regular season record far exceeded my original expectations is putting it lightly.

So looking ahead, in 2011 they got 2 First Rounders, 2 Second Rounders, 2 Third Rounders. That's not too bad for a team that needs to plug a few wholes. Looking forward to following who will be targeted early especially.

The difference maker in NE is not Brady or any other player. It's coach B. They went 11-5 with Matt Cassel under center. That team wins despite non-elite talent at WR and RB every year. He turns out one of the top offenses in the NFL every year by leaning on versatile role players like Wes Welker and Kevin Faulk. On no other team would those guys be the difference makers so often.

There's no questioning Brady's talent of course but with any other franchise I think he'd probably be just another very good NFL QB, and not necessarily a guy who became a sure fire no doubt hall of famer by 30.

That said, it's been a few years now since this team has won a playoff game. So while they keep dominating the regular season, they're beginning to look like the regular playoff collapsing Yankees teams of of 2004-2008.

You can't discount Brady that much. Even though they did go 11-5 without him, Cassel did have Moss and Welker plus a very good defense, the team was 16-0 the year before, so the team around Cassel was great. This year, it was a total rebuilding project on offense. Moss left, they have 2 new TE's and Woodhead had to take the role of Faulk. Plus the D was in the process of being rebuilt too.

They were not supposed to go 14-2 this year, it was a surprise. You can't discount loss though. It was apparent that Brady needed a weapon in a game like that. I think that is where they go in the draft this year, WR.

I don't mean to discount Brady. He's the only consistantly elite player on a consistantly elite offense. I just don't think he'd be having quite the historically elite career he is having on a team coached by someone other than Bill Belichick.

Belichek's career record 174-100
without Tom Brady 41-56
with Tom Brady 133-44

It isn't about Brady. Is is about this arrogant attitude (which, among other things, condones rules bending and breaking). Comes with the territory, I suppose. When the Red Sox (finally) won the world series, their fans acted like the worst Yankees fans do, lording over the rest of the sports world.

#9 - Had Brady been the QB on the 91 - 95 Browns I don't believe they would have looked like the 2000 - 2011 Pats.

Well he had Bernie Kosar and Testaverde those years, its not like he had the worst QB's in the league.

But of course, if he had a Top 5 QB then his record would be better. Thats the point I guess.

I think the much greater point is that Belichick grew exponentially as a coach between his tenures in Cleveland and New England. Maybe it took a few more years under Parcells to finish honing his craft.

Think of his time with the Jets as his Dagobah.

Including the part where he cuts out before he was supposed to.

Brady can be Harrison Ford. A key player, don't get me wrong, but Luke probably could have pulled it off with Clint Eastwood, too.

As a "newbie" (since 2005) to the NFL game... I gotta say this. I'm a Patriots fan due to:

#1 Location. Grew up in Maritimes which is almost an extension of Maine/"Greater NE", and now live in Montreal, so still closest venue for a game is New England.

#2 Coaching. The team rarely has a down year when it comes to Offensive Line penalties / undisciplined play, and they also "evolve". When they have a stout defense, they relied upon it. When they have a crazy aerial attack, ditto.

As much as having a "polished" QB like Brady is important... I know that as long as Bellichick's around they are going to find a way to win.

Scott Pioli has been the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs for the past two NFL seasons.

Well no wonder the Patriots haven't won a playoff game!

In seriousness, I had forgotten about that. Does that mean Bellichick deserves even more credit? Probably. But there are certainly dozens of scouts and personnel men, negotiators and management types that are also great at what they do: getting Bellichick his kinds of players.
