Bottom line up front: I am asking for your thoughts on this trade
I've been offered:
Calvin Johnson and 3rd round pick (#6)
for
Marques Colston, Matt Ryan, Jermichael Finley, Jahvid Best and my 8th round pick (#2)

Info you need to know:
16 team League
30 players per team with a starting line-up of 22 players (QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 3FLEX (RB/WR/TE), K, 3DB, 3LB, 3DL, 2Flex (DB/LB/DL)
Fairly standard offensive scoring rules, IDP score a bit less and are not keeper worthy
6 Keepers allowed

If I didn't make any trades these would probably be my 6 keepers, with the first four locks:
Cam Newton
Lesean McCoy
Frank Gore
Jahvid Best
Ben Tate
Marques Colston

These are other players I have with possible keeper potential or trade bait:
Matt Ryan
Brandon Jacobs
Denarius Moore
Jacoby Ford
Mike Williams (TB)
Jermichael Finley

I have the 15th pick in the draft and it snakes (2nd pick in even rounds). I currently do not have a 3rd round pick. With 96 players as keepers, besides rookies, there isn't a lot of offensive takent available in the draft. Here is who went in the first round this last season: Santana Moss, Kenny Britt, Zach Miller, Mark Ingram, Matthew Stafford, Pierre Garcon, Danny Amendola, Mike Williams (SEA), Willis McGahee, Tony Gonzalez, Julio Jones, Reggie Bush, Brandon Jacobs, Daniel Thomas, Julius Peppers, Kellen Winslow

If I accepted the trade of Calvin Johnson and 3rd round pick (#6) for Marques Colston, Matt Ryan, Jermichael Finley, Jahvid Best and my 8th round pick (#2)

That would make my keepers:
Cam Newton
Lesean McCoy
Frank Gore
Calvin Johnson
and two of either Ben Tate, Brandon Jacobs, Denarius Moore, and Jacoby Ford.

I put all those players he asked for on the trade block. I am tired of Best being fragile and unreliable. I happen to also have Kevin Smith on my team but only see keeper value if he ends up elsewhere or Best is injured before keepers have to be declared. I wouldn't keep a TE in this format unless his name was Gronkowski or Graham, but many other teams seem to like to keep a TE. I worry that Colston is going to chase the cash and leave NO with a great chance his value severely drops on the wrong team.

I could wait until next season gets closer to see where value is at, but the chance to get Calvin Johnson is one I wouldn't want to pass up. My initial thoughts that I shared with the other owner included counters of:

1) you changed the draft pick you are sending to your 1st round pick instead of 3rd

2) or you included one less player from my team in that offer that I would be able to use as trade bait for another top round pick to someone else

3) or if you included another higher round draft pick (say a 4th) for one of my later round picks (say a 18th)

Keeping it real, I know he is asking for a bunch of good players (that I mostly can't keep) for an elite player, which is usually hard to get. On the other hand, I know I can trade all of those players for 1st-3rd round picks and for some of those guys, multiple top round picks, which might mean a stronger overall team (if I drafted well again) next season. It would help a lot if I could get some other opinions on this trade.

Upgrading Best to CJohnson ...Good.
Downgrading Colston to Jacobs, Moore, Ford not so good.
I dont know that the keepers you end up with would be worth the 8th for a 3rd.
In addition, you will lose a lot of flexibility should there be bad news from training camps next season.
You will also lose all your trade bait for another keeper or draft picks.
CJohnson is very tempting but I think you are giving up a bit much.

in a league this deep, giving up a WR2, a QB2, a RB2, and a TE1 seem like a bit much.

i think Finley and Ryan alone - again, considering the depth of this league - could snag a WR1 - maybe not Megatron, but certainly someone.

i would see what else is out there - also, considering the depth of this league, i would think a strong back up QB like Ryan has more value as a keeper than two of either Ben Tate, Brandon Jacobs, Denarius Moore, and Jacoby Ford (although i do like Moore).

Thanks for the replies. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy for asking for more and if not getting it, turning it down.

My keepers coming into this year were:
Matt Ryan
Lesean McCoy
Frank Gore
Jahvid Best
Marques Colston
Michael Williams (TB)

Ryan was the 6th highest scoring QB in the league this year and would be a solid upgrade for a handful of teams. Colston and Best would both bring in a 1st round pick and probably multiple picks.

I am a Raider homer and am high on both Moore and Ford for next season with Palmer getting a full off-season with them, but would gamble I could drop Ford and get him with an early pick. I'd have to see what most football sites have for rankings before I gambled on dropping Moore.

I agree with wk. This is a bit of a stretch for you to make that trade.

I'm in a dynasty keeper league (keep entire roster) and someone has offered me Michael Turner for Peyton Manning. I have Cam Newton (and Alex Smith for backup/bye), so definitely willing to move the aging Peyton... but concerned that Turner is nearing 30. But who's going to give up a younger quality back? And there's the chance that Peyton can't come back or winds up in a situation where his stock drops, etc. Plus he's 35, even injury concerns aside.

So kinda 50/50 on pulling the trigger on Turner, but truth is I could use a running back... I have just Matt Forte and Shonn Greene (and then some lottery balls in Kevin Smith, Kendall Hunter, Taiwan Jones, Dion Lewis, and Shane Vereen)... and we can start up to 3 RBs (there's a RB/WR/TE flex spot). So... pull trigger on Turner, or try to trade Manning for a younger RB?
