Can't believe there hasn't been a discussion started about bounties yet, so here goes.

Bounties? Are we really shocked that they exist? I think not. Now, does that make it right? Of course not; however, with the way the game has evolved over the years, bounties are certainly a byproduct of overagressive play.

Having said that, should the Saints be penalized, and what would be a fair penalty that would "send a message" to other teams?

I think the fact that they exist shouldn't be a surprise. I'm only a little surprised that the money involved was provided, in part, by the coaches.

Were Gregg Williams and Buddy Ryan on the same staff in Houston?

Yes he was. In '90, I believe.

I can't say I'm surprised. And I'm also not surprised that guys who make a minimum of $300k are hugely motivated by $1,000. That was paid in cash to them.

I think Gregg Williams needs to get a huge, huge suspension, along with Payton and the GM, because they were told to stop, but didn't. As bad as bounties were, continouing after being told is much, much worse.

Wouldn't mind seeing Williams being bounced for a year or so. Coach Payton and the Saints GM need to be reprimanded sternly. In spite of their owners wishes, they both went against what he said and allowed the bounty system to continue. They're lucky to have a job. Not sure how the league will penalize the team but it sounds like a huge fine and loss of draft picks will be forthcoming.

I'd like to see fines/penalties not all that different from what the Pats got with their taping fiasco.

Goodell has made player safety the lynchpin of his Commissionership. I dont see him going in any way at all, 'soft' on this.

I concur sarge. Goodell will hit the Saints hard and strong......and rightly so. I suspect, however, that the Saints aren't the only bounty picker uppers in the league. Just the ones that got caught.

Agreed, though I would be genuinely surprised, if the other teams doing it to date, dont end their programs of such most 'ricky tick'.

Back when, the fine for parking ion a handi-capped slot was $50. I saw countless Mercedes-Benz, Porsches, etc etc in those slots and getting ticketed. Because the fine, was pocket change to the owners of those cars. When the state bumped the fine to $1,000; you saw the spots empty unless rightly occupied. The same theory in my mind, holds here. The fines MUST be P-A-I-N-F-U-L, or they will be seen as "the cost of admission to the amusement park".

Handicap violaters deserve to be fined with the stiffest fine allowed by law. A message has to be set and, in the case of the Saints, has to be one that gets not only the attention of other teams but also cause these teams to realize that breaking the spirit of sportsmanship comes at a great price.

To me, it's a lot like those that speed. I'm sure we have all drove beyond the designated speed limit but if the limit isn't enforced, we'll keep doing what we've always been doing. Rules must be enforced before behavior will change!

well, Goodell certainly made it clear that he is perfectly willing to hold the coaches responsible for something like this. (And rightfully so I might add)

Head Coach suspended for the entire upcoming season AND fined $5,800,000.

Suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton will have a lot of free time in the upcoming season -- he's out of the game for the entire 2012 campaign, and he's $5.8 million lighter in the pocket after Roger Goodell told him that he was not needed this year as a result of BountyGate.
