RIFC Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
Almost all of my planning centered around getting Rodgers in the first round, and then grabbing some RBs quick, or as soon as value presented itself. I was hoping to get a top DL, and upside WRs if the opportunity was there. I wasn't too hung up on getting "top" IDPs, because LB and DB seemed to be deeper. This was in contrast to normal for me, as I usually jump harder on IDPs sooner.
Obviously, getting McCoy instead of Rodgers changed my plans a little, but I still ended up w/ 1 QB, 2 RB, and 1 WR after 4 rounds, which is what I expected to have anyway. I think I have a mixed bag of potential "busts" and potential "sleepers" at WR. Hopefully more of the latter. My IDPs are nothing spectacular. I will call them "value" as opposed to "weak".

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Love having McCoy and Jackson 1/2. They can give me a clear edge at RB position over most.
Like Finley late in the 6th.
Love having Allen, but maybe I should've taken a step back and grabbed a WR there. Mine are weak, and there were some good ones available.
I feel similarly on Vick. I was looking at the spots Vick went in each RIFC draft. First draft, he was 3.01. Then 3.10, then ours at 3.11, and finally 4.12. He dropped almost two full rounds over the course of about 3 days. I might've even been able to get him myself at 4.11. If not, one of the other 3 that went in the 4th would've surely been available.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Hard to judge, as always. I guess maybe Frick and loki.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
McCoy slipping to 4th. Beanie slipped a long way. Other than that, I don't recall anything too surprising.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
Not taking Vick, and/or Allen, would've likely changed a lot about my draft. If these two spots don't turn out as strengths for me, then my team will be in trouble.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
When I got to pick my draft position I knew I wanted to be near one of the ends because I was going to be on vacation the entire draft and thought it would be easier to manage my picks. With the banzai format, I chose the bottom end of the draft and decided that if the 5 RB, 1 WR, a 3 QB's I valued as "must take" first round picks were gone I would grab one of the two high scoring TE from last season and a solid WR and RB with my next two picks. I had also planned on grabbing Ryan at the beginning of the fourth round before all of the top QB's were gone. This would have left me with a starting QB, RB, WR, and TE through 4 rounds. The plan fell apart when I decided to go WR/WR in the 2nd and 3rd round. 21 running backs had been selected by the time my fourth round pick was due and I had to make Bush #22. With so many RB taken before I chose my two starters, I am very vunerable at that position. The silver lining on that cloud is that I got Romo in the 5th, who I think will be a top 10 QB.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
I don't want to jinx any of my picks. I have terrible luck with injuries when I play RIFC. It's probably a very good thing I didn't draft any key Raider starters. I like almost all the players I got and where I got them. The only player on my team I am not happy to have is my back-up QB who I drafted at the end of the 21st round, and that was pretty much a must draft pick. If my players stay healthy, I am happy with this team.

If we redid the draft and I could play two different teams, I might have picked the 2nd draft position to get Rice or Foster. Looking at how the draft unfolded, if I had the 2nd pick my first five picks might have been Foster, A.Johnson, Marshall, Benson, and Romo. Hmm, Foster and Marshall instead of Fitzgerald and Graham...something to think about.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I see strengths and weaknesses with every team. If I had to swap teams with one other manager, it would be Loki. I am leery of Manning as a starter, but I like Cutler and think between the two he is solid at the position; Bradshaw and McFadden as starters with good depth in Turbin, Wilson, and Jennings; three good starting receivers in Jones, Jackson, and Smith along with some depth; solid players for all three IDP positions and even a top kicker. I am pretty terrible at fantasy football so he should be a little concerned that I like his team so much. I like YR's team too. Outside of Cruz and Young I don't love his remaining receivers, but if his guys stay healthy (Rice especially) he will be one of the teams vying for the championship.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
I expected more WR to go in the first two rounds. In 2011 there were 9 receivers drafted in the first two rounds and in 2010 there were 10 receivers drafted in the first two rounds. This year we only had five.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
I will have to see how things look in a few weeks. If my RB are terrible and I am not scoring good points, then I will be kicking myself for not going RB in round 2 and 3. If key starters are injured, it will be yet another frustrating year.

Note: This is a parody and does not express the view of NBC, Bob Costas, culdeus, Socrates, or any league member.

Bob Costas: Welcome to the Opening Ceremonies of the 9th Rotoguru Invitational Football Challenge! It promises to be an exciting competition and the pageantry is always a spectacle. We have 14 teams tonight, which will march through in alphabetical order, with two exceptions. With me to provide color commentary on the Parade of Teams is long-time RIFC competitor, culdeus. Welcome!

culdeus: Thanks Bob. Even though NBC sucks, I’m happy to be here and won’t be pulling any punches in assessing these teams. The RIFC has really evolved. I remember when I was playing, the defensive teams would just wander all over the place, and the defensive players that were also on a drafted team always looked bewildered. No more of that now, of course. At least none of these teams are as bad as your canned jokes, Bob!

Bob As always, culdeus, your candor is refreshing. Here come the teams now. Leading off, as always, is the host team, RotoGuru. While they may get an automatic invite every year, they are a former champion and always competitive. Just look at the precision in that formation. It’s almost Borg-like! Carrying the big flag with an “R” on it is Leon Washington. Curious choice there, culdeus, any insight into that?

culdeus: It’s emblematic of the reliance this team has on return yards, Bob. There may be as many as 7 guys scoring return points on this team. It’s an interesting strategy, yet this team just doesn’t seem to be as strong as in prior years. The QBs and RBs seems a bit light to me and any injuries to a starter will make for a long season.

Bob: Next up is Beezer. Oddly enough, this former champion appears to be wearing the same outfits they wore last year!

culdeus: Seems appropriate considering they used nearly the same draft strategy. While it may have worked last year, this year’s edition of the Crazy 88s doesn’t seem quite as good. Look at that LB corp! What kind of a sorry group is that! They’re probably a playoff team, yet this team just seems a bit – off. Maybe it’s all the guys limping in on pre-season injuries! It’s no surprise that they’ve got Calvin Johnson carrying their flag, as he and the other WRs are going to have to carry this team.

Bob: Team Frick has entered the stadium. Interesting that all of the players are wearing suits of armor to match their team’s flag. Definitely a memorable interest for this newly promoted team. We can hear them stomping along from up here in the broadcast booth! It’s hard to tell from here, but is that Pierre Garcon carrying their flag?

culdeus: Looks that way, Bob. I guess since there are no Indy players on this team that they had to make do. But let me tell you something, Costas, this team has got weapons at the key positions. It’s a long season and all, and the draft isn’t the difference-maker it used to be because of the new tools available to every team. Yet it’s hard not to have this team as a favorite to take the title!

Bob: It’s taking a while for Team Frick to make it through the stadium with all that armor, so we’ll grab a commercial break and come right back…

Bob Costas: And we’re back! Let’s catch you up on teams that marched through while we were awa…

culdeus: Hold on a minute, Bob. Why do we have to catch everyone up when we’re on tape delay anyway? No wonder everyone hates the big event coverage on NBC!

Bob:That’s a decision above my pay grade! Anyway, gurudan and the fear the monkey team definitely lived up to their name. I haven’t seen this much feces flung around since I covered the baseball strike in ’94! It’s hard to make out who’s carrying the flag from here.

culdeus: Looks like David Akers, who had the dubious distinction of being the worst pick in this draft. He was drafted a full 12 rounds before the second kicker was picked – just a huge miscalculation on their part! The shocking thing is that this team doesn’t look that terrible! This team’s got the best QB in the game, some decent RBs, and fair starters everywhere else. Don’t count them out just yet!

Bob: You know, culdeus, scientists no longer consider the term “monkey” to refer to a recognized scientific grouping. It’s amazing what our fact checkers turn up preparing for this event!

culdeus: That’s one term for it, Bob.

Bob: Back to live coverage as Team holt enters the arena. Looking sharp in those red uniforms! Dare I say Sooner-esque!

culdeus: That explains why Adrian Peterson and Sam Bradford are scuffling over who carries the flag! But the biggest issue this team is going to be fighting is RB depth. I think Shonn Greene has tripped twice since they started marching through. Maybe Ingram or Alfred Morris can carry the load, but I wouldn’t hang my hat on that. Not a bad team, but not the best, either.

Bob: It looks like Jzapps and the Graham Crackerz are on the move. This is a very secretive team – the team spokesman hasn’t said a word in any of the press conferences. The Animal masks are just downright freaky. Interesting to note that Graham Crackers were initially developed as a remedy for “unhealthy carnal urges”. Is it working on you like it is on me, culdeus?

culdeus: I think that’s just Tim Tebow, Bob. That’s an impressive flag pole he’s carrying there. And there are several impressive players on this team – Foster, Hillis, Brian Cushing. But this team’s got a gaping hole at QB and WR3 might be rough if Little doesn’t live up to expectations. It’s hard to feel good about their chances, but it’s not impossible they could grab a playoff spot.

Bob: And here comes loki in those retro New York Titan uniforms! But culdeus, you think that it’s a different New York player that could make the difference?

culdeus: Two, actually. Ahmad Bradshaw and David Wilson is a great tandem that virtually ensures that one of the RB positions will have a nice producer each week. This team has been a betting favorite and it’s understandable. But it could easily go astray if DMC and Peyton have issues during the season. I’m putting my money elsewhere.

Bob: We were going to go to another commercial, but we’ve just been told that this is a parody and there are no actual commercials. But we do need to break up these posts, so we’ll be back right after these messages…

Bob: Next up is russeldl, with probably the most bewildering flag in the competition. Cheese and a guy in a Bears hardhat? I haven’t been so confused since Chris Hansen and I accidentally switched shows back in 2008…

culdeus: It looks like MJD and Mike Wallace are both carrying the flag. Nice to see them actually reporting on time for something! This team could get off to a slow start with all of the holdouts and pre-season injuries. Gotta love those IDPs and Tom Brady, though. If they can survive the first four weeks of the season, this is a team no one wants to face in the playoffs.

Bob: Team SwinganaMiss is next into the arena. The Charlie Brown flag is always a fan favorite but not everyone has forgiven Michael Vick yet. Very mixed reaction from the crowd.

culdeus: And I have the same reaction, Bob. Lots of individually talented players, but some red flags here. McCoy and Vick could explode, but if Vick gets hurt it may hurt this team in two positions. The WR corp is nothing to write home about, either. Solid IDPs including the best DL pair in the league help, so I’m not quite sure what to think.

Bob: Getting near the end as team TB is making its way through the stadium. No surprise to see Taiwan Jones carrying the silver and black. You may be interested to know, culdeus, that Tb stands for terbium and is element 65 in the periodic table. It appears most frequently in green phosphors, which are actually yellow. You’re looking a little “green” yourself, there, partner…

culdeus: Sorry, Bob, I’ve just about hit my gag limit on lousy segues. Speaking of lousy, the RB situation could easily be a wasteland if this team doesn’t catch some breaks this year. I like Boldin as a WR3 steal and the IDPs are good, but it’s so tough to win in this league without decent RB play.

Bob: Not to be confused with the previous group, team TD is rocking the Eagles unis! And we have yet another kicker carrying the flag, as Alex Henery gets the nod. In a more uplifting note, .td is the top-level Internet domain for Chad, one of the world’s poorest countries. Why aren’t they making money from the NFL the way Tuvalu is capitalizing on .tv?

culdeus: (ignoring Bob’s lead-in) Solid team, good potential throughout the lineup, as good a shot as anyone. Are we almost done yet?

Bob: Yes, the tension is building as we get near the end, my friend! Always a fan favorite, team wiggs always has the craziest hair and every player is accompanied by a dog! So it’s appropriate that former Fresno State Bulldog Ryan Matthews is carrying the flag. Is this team’s bark worse than its bite, culdeus?

culdeus Like the offense, hate the defense, Bob. I think wiggs waited a bit too long to start getting IDPs and it shows. If this team can upgrade the D during the season, they could take this thing. Just behind the top teams but certainly a contender.

Bob: A big roar from the European contingent as youngroman’s luschen are the next to last team to appear. Oddly enough, they don’t have a flag or a flag carrier. I’ve been told that luschen is German for “suckers”. Are we suckers for thinking that this team could take the title?

culdeus: Possibly. While having the top 2 LBs is a strength, the team made a critical oversight in not grabbing some top DLs. It’s not a death sentence, but coach Roman has some work to do to get this team into shape in time for the season.

Bob: And now the big moment, as the defending champs are the last to enter the arena. Huge cheers for team Bonka! And in a sentimental move, Mike Tolbert and Lawrence Timmons are carrying the team flag as members of both last year’s champions and this year’s team. Here’s the big question, culdeus – does this team have what it takes to repeat?

culdeus: There’s no question this team can repeat. They have solid starters at nearly every position and they have proven they can improve throughout the season. I won’t argue with anyone that has installed them as the favorites.

Bob: And as the RIFC rings are lit, we close the book on the Opening Ceremonies. Let’s go to culdeus for some final thoughts.

culdeus: As much fun as I usually have identifying the teams that just have no shot and should be ashamed of themselves, it’s hard to see that in this year’s group of competitors. So in-season management is going to decide this league, which is how it should be.

Bob: And that wraps it up for us. For culdeus, I’m Bob Costas, and may the odds ever be in your fa…oh wait, that’s an entirely different show.

nice writeup Beezer. I guess if I would know Bob Costas it would have been even more entertaining. I could write up a german dialog between Austrian sports broadcasting legends, like Heinz Prüller or Sigi Bergmann, but I don't think they know much about football so I would need to pair them with Christopher Ryan, the Austrian voice of football.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
I think this was the 1st time in my RIFC history that I did not have a strategy entering the draft. there is always the
- take 2 RB's early
- get value picks
- don't forget the value of IDPs

looks like I failed on the IDP part because I missed that we need to start 2 DL. I call that lazyness on my side.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
favorites are 9.11 Bonzi Wells and 18.04 Kendall Hunter

I don't know if I would do one over right now. I always picked one of the best players available at their position and sometimes it is hard to project some of them.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
looking alone at QBs and RBs I see issues on almost every team. If you add WR and TE the issues grow and most of the time depend on the starters staying healthy. If I would need to switch teams I'd take Wiggs team. he has a lot players that I already considered but sometimes not in the round he got them: Stafford, Mathews/Turner/Redman, Colston/Austin/Maclin/Crabtree, Gresham make a solid offense. Watt, Greenway/Mayo, Revis are a solid core on defense.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
not especially any picks other than the Akers pick. was surprised that a lot of non-RB position players went that early: QB, TE, even DL. that is a nice difference compared to drafts from 5 years ago and makes this league more unique compared to others.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
pick a WR at 5.11 and my 3rd LB in round 14 or later.
as always I need to work the waiver wire to get some steals and plug some bye-week holes because of underperforming players. I am usually good doing this so I am looking forward to the blind bid thingie. non-conditional bids are making the whole thing interesting. a bit more strategy is necessary in some special situations. conditional bids would be easier though.

Question from the peanut gallery...
RE 11: Do you feel Bonzi Wells will be able to keep his 12.1 ppg now that he's 35 and been out of the league for 4 years?

haha. good catch Kyle. don't know why I wrote Bonzi instead of Beanie. It needs to be seen if Beanie can outscore the 12.1ppg of Bonzi this season. To be honest I doubt it.

No in-season discussion thread yet, so I'll post this here.

I was at MetLife Stadium for the NFL opener last night, and I had never seen Giants' fans more energized. It was like being at a Jets game early in the season before Jets' fans realized that it was going to be another typical Jets' season. Of course most of the energy left after David Wilson's fumble.
The evening was not a total loss as Martellus Bennett and Amahd Bradshaw both scored. Manning targeted Bennett 6 times, he ended up with 4 receptions and was Manning's receiver of choice in the Red Zone. I am hoping this will continue, and Bennett will turn out to be a real sleeper.
