It seems like an unusually active Black Monday today... especially for HCs with winning records. Here's the list so far:
ARIZONA: HC Ken Whisenhunt, GM Rod Graves BUFFALO: HC Chan Gailey CHICAGO: HC Lovie Smith CLEVELAND: HC Pat Shurmur, GM Tom Heckert JACKSONVILLE: GM Gene Smith KANSAS CITY: HC Romeo Crennel NEW YORK JETS: GM Mike Tannenbaum PHILADELPHIA: HC Andy Reid SAN DIEGO: HC Norv Turner, GM AJ Smith
Some interesting names from the college ranks have been rumored for the available jobs. Here's the three I've heard:
CHIP KELLY: Any talk about potential NFL HC jobs comes with a mention of his name. With the explosion of offense in the NFL, the talk of Kelly makes sense. The recent success of rookie QBs has shown that Kelly's style of offense will work better now than it likely would have several years ago.
BILL O'BRIEN: This one surprised me a bit given that O'Brien just got to Penn State, but the show I was listening to said that O'Brien's unhappy with what he was sold before becoming HC. Apparently, PSU told O'Brien that the Sandusky issue was a legal problem and not an NCAA problem. With the NCAA disagreeing with that assessment, O'Brien could be looking to get back into the NFL in a promising situation.
NICK SABAN: I've read about Saban's potential departure a lot on AL.com. Basically, the rumor goes something like this: Nick doesn't like to stay in one place for long; he's accomplished everything there is to accomplish at Alabama; he's saying that he's not going anywhere, which is exactly what he said every time he left; he has close ties to the Cleveland Browns ownership (?); he wants to succeed at a level he hasn't succeeded at before. We'll see... |

he's saying that he's not going anywhere, which is exactly what he said every time he left;
That's pretty funny. Does he say, "I'm outta here!" every offseason that he sticks around, too?
SO VERY HAPPY Da Bearz fired their best coach since George Halas. You seriously thought that squad was better than 10 wins LOLOLOLOL!!!!

Nice to see iggles owner Lurie give a nice farewell to Andy in his press conference. They clearly respect each other and understood the need for a new direction. Lots of class there.
That said, I wonder who we will get. Lurie has been researching a list for the last month...

That's pretty funny. Does he say, "I'm outta here!" every offseason that he sticks around, too? Exactly. As AL.com has been reporting that particular aspect of Saban's rumored interest in an NFL position, I've kept thinking to myself, "So what do they want him to say if he's actually staying?"

Chip Kelly's skill set would not translate into NFL success. Don't know if he is bright enough to realize that or that there is not at least one team dumb enough to try it...
I read the Raiders fired some coaches. You know, if the NFL was set up like the English Premier League, we would never even hear news of the Raiders, they wouldn't have sniffed the NFL since 2002.

It would be interesting to see O'Brien in Philly. Read a bit about his year at PSU, and he could help turn around the team. Reid to Arizona could be interesting. The QB was drafted by him, so he would know the offense. The defense was not the problem there, but the DC probably will get a HC job. Reid could get the band back together with Cleveland basically being Philly #2 the last couple of years.
The Browns job from what I have read/heard could be one of the most attractive. They have had back records, but teams never liked to play them. I actually would see Chip Kelley going here. Could be nice story next year.

With the state of Pennsylvania preparing to sue the NCAA....
Who knows what will happen?
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is to announce Wednesday plans to sue the NCAA over its sanctions against Penn State University, hit with an unprecedented fine in the wake of the child sex abuse scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

Corbett is just trying to keep the heat off his role in the Sandusky affair...

From what I understand of the PSU sanctions, the administration agreed to the sanctions, in return for not going through the normal NCAA process and most likely being hit with tougher sanctions. It seems like a tough thing to sue when both parties agreed. Are they going to argue that PSU only agreed because they were under duress?
Lovie being fired in Chicago doesn't make a ton of sense, other than Lovie wasn't the GM's coach, so he had to go. I'm not a huge Lovie fan, but he has been successful and they have had no continuity on offense coaches. I'm not sure where all of the blame for that falls.

Bill O'Brien interviews with the Browns, then commits to staying at Penn State
Andy Reid is likely to get the Kansas City job, with the rumor indicating that GM Scott Pioli (who was part of the interview?!) likely would be let go so Reid could "bring his own staff in from top to bottom".
FOX Sports is saying Chip Kelly will interview with Cleveland, Philly, and Buffalo

Add Jacksonville HC Mike Mularkey to the list.
Not really much of a surprise as new GM David Caldwell will want to work with his own guys.

CLEVELAND Browns hire former CAR OC Rob Chudzinski as HC
According to the article, "Chud" is the sixth full-time coach for Cleveland since 1999.
It'll be interesting to see what he can do with the team. As an OC in CLE (2007-08) and CAR (2011-12), his teams saw dips in production during his second season. He'll need to reverse that trend as a HC.

CHICAGO "The Bears hired Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman on Wednesday.

"Trestman was an offensive coordinator with Cleveland, San Francisco, Arizona and Oakland."
SAN DIEGO "Chargers introduce [Denver offensive coordinator] Mike McCoy as new head coach.
"McCoy, 40, edged out Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, among others, to be named the 15th head coach San Diego franchise history.
