Interesting perspective from the former coach.

It is one thing to change out an inefficient QB. Another to trade away your top player for a draft pick (particularly since there may be no RB taken in next year's first round draft)

I have watched/listened to several "experts" on this and I was surprised to hear them say it was a great move for the Browns. Some of them said...

*New GM and coach and want their own players
*You can get a great RB in the 6th round
*Browns have no chance and they are stockpiling picks
*Browns actually got the better deal. TR has been avg at best with a 3.5 yds and unable to create separation

I don't buy it tbh. What if the Browns poor blockers and poor QBs were part of the problem? I guess we shall see how it goes, but as a Colts fan I am excited to see what he can do in Indy.

Mike Francesa on WFAN in NYC argued with caller after caller yesterday -- he is on the side of all the above things Ref said above.

No current title contender has their best player at RB - generally RBBC except for Falcons perhaps but SJax is more of a luxury. Its just not the way to build in this day and age of a passing league. You draft a RB every couple years in like the 3rd round and keep cycling them through.

With all these extra picks AND a terrible team this year I think Cleveland is trying to guarantee they get a top QB in next years draft. Either by moving up or just their own pick. Similar to the 76ers plan of moving Jrue and getting injured Noel.

BUT -- one thing they could have done better? they probably could have also gotten Vick Ballard back in exchange, no? Colts have no use for him now anyway AND he's hurt. That would have made it a perfect trade.

And frankly I think the Colts did ok too -- cause their pick is late 1st round anyway, so to sure up another top skill position guy with lets call it the 25th pick in next years draft that seems solid.

Part of the mix: Richardson is just 22. I would have hoped they would have gotten back a young player with upside. But that would have been Richardson.

I'm just glad I'm not a Browns season ticket holder. They appear to have thrown in the towel after just two games.

Ref: If I offered you this trade in G24, I would have been booted from that league a second time.

Richardson is also under contract for 3 more years at very friendly cap numbers. Now, both he and Luck will be up for new contracts at the same time, but that is distant future in NFL terms.

How much would the Colts have had to pay to get a similar quality running back that was a FA. And who would be significantly older.

I also read today that the Browns owner offered every single pick last year to get Luck and the Colts said no. This is definitely a QB league right now.

I can see what the browns are doing, their new regime didn't see Richardson as the solution to any of their problems.

On a larger scale the move looks crazy, the Browns invested multiple picks to draft Richardson #3 overall, and gave him away for a pick that is likely going to be in the 20+ range.

in a vacuum is Richardson a guy you could make into the focal point of the offense and win in the NFL today or even win in the AFC North?

For the Colts, if Richardson can stay healthyish, and pick up enough of the offense, he will be a great complimentary player because they have the rest of their offense figured out already.

It'll be interesting to see what the Browns do with these picks in next years draft, if they spend the picks well, this is a genius move that sets their team up well for the long term.

I assume the Colts pick is the one they used for Johnny Football? So how does the trade look now under that guise?
