I'm still furious. Y'all were asleep last night when the game of the year ended in the worst possible fashion.

First, I am not a Luddite, but I have been hyper critical of instant replay, what happened last night is simply the latest and worst example of how it is flawed. Sure, most simpletons say, "well, it's worth the wait to get the call right", but what if the call WAS right, the refs stop the momentum, and then OVERTURN the right call, ending the game? There is nothing worse. The Huskies were marching down the field with one minute left, completed a 15 yard pass on 4th and ten to put us on the edge of field goal range, were about to snap the ball when the booth stops the game. Ten minutes later, they call the obviously completed pass incomplete and the game is over. Is f'ing Tim Donaghy up there? If there was ever an official whose head needed to end up on a pike, it is this a$$hole. Stanford, consider yourself cursed, Oregon will beat you, and we are going to eviscerate Oregon next Saturday, so we will play in the PAC-12 championship game.

Yeah, it's great fun for the local fans to watch a game at night on the West Coast, but the East Coast media is already asleep and lazy to begin with, so they will continue to call the mediocrity that was the UGA vs. LSU game an "instant classic" when they should have been watching two far superior teams playing on the Farm. Same thing next week. Most of the country will miss the game with national championship implications as the Huskies beat Oregon when Oregon taps out in the third quarter around 1am Eastern. The SEC fans will be well past their eighth Bud Light by then, but they haven't been known to recognize other schools even when sober... There are only one pack of DAWGS playing football this year and they will be beating Oregon next week.

Umm....sorry to ruin your rant.....but the ball was trapped.
Thank you instant replay for getting the call right and not letting an undeserving team a chance to win the game.

The ball hits the ground. Pretty clear, IMO.

The announcers are idiots--both times they showed the replay, the ball clearly hits the ground.

Wow. That's a whole lot of wrong in one post.

1. Washington-Stanford was ESPN's highest-rated game of the day Saturday.
2. The ball hit the ground. Perhaps there were camera angles other than those two.
3. Next Saturday's game starts at 4pm Eastern. I hope it's long over by Zen's 1am 3rd Qtr prediction.
4. Huskies best chance of victory is against the spread. Currently at a surprising low 2 TDs.

ESPN announced this morning that its "College GameDay" pregame show would be produced next weekend from Seattle, where the #2 Ducks will meet #16 Washington on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT

Go Ducks!

That said ... I am looking forward to a better Duck opponent to see how good they really are. Virginia, Tennessee, California, and Colorado are all having down years.

On offence, Oregon is 2nd nationally in points/game (59.2) and yards/game (630.4), 3rd in rushing offense (335.8) and 9th in pass efficiency (170.1).

On defense, the Ducks are 2nd in scoring (11.8), 7th in yards per play allowed (4.08) and seventh in pass efficiency (91.7).

The Ducks are 2nd in turnover margin (plus-1.8 per game), 4th defensively in touchdowns allowed inside the red zone (30.7%) and 7th in third-down defense (25.8%).

The Ducks remain the best big-play team in the country, on both sides of the ball. Oregon's 48 plays of 20-plus yards on offense are the most in the nation, and the 10 allowed on defense are tied for the fewest in the country.

And despite an average score of 59-12, last Saturday was the first time this season the Ducks won the time of possession battle (avg 25:20 per game)

The rule says you need to have "indisputable video evidence" I don't think the replays provide that. I think that the ball touched the ground, but it is close enough that I'm willing to let the official who was their live and with a better view make the call. The flip side, if it was called incomplete, it wouldn't have been overturned to a completion.

Even with HD video, the image is blurry and it is hard to define where exactly the ball is. The video above doesn't meet the indisputable part of the rule IMO.

Mayor - we have a wide divergence between your definition of "clearly" and "ground" and the rest of us, however, we do agree on the meaning of "ball", so with the idea of working together, we'll go with your definition of "ball" and my "he caught the f'ing thing", as stated by my esteemed colleague Frick.

There is a point in the video where you see the ball on the ground, and no arms under it (within the 37th second of the video). Seems pretty clear cut to me.

Perhaps the problem is that we are using different definitions of "caught."

First time at an Auburn game.
Was a great game to watch. Heartbreaking for my Dawgs. Going to suck to lose Murray, he is amazing QB.

My reaction while the ball is in the air, "We Win, We Win, We Win!!!" .... silence...

I like Gurley's quote, "You see this play every week on Sportscenter, it just sucks when it is against you."

Auburn definitely benefited from having two back to back home games against us this year.

We saw the same play last week when the Balt DB popped the ball in the air when it was headed out of the end zone and Cincy sent the game into OT.
I see so many plays on 4th down passes where the defensive players are trying for an interceptions.

It is obvious there needs to be better situational coaching at all levels.
In baseball from the time a kid starts T-ball you will hear a coach say "There are 2 outs run on contact".
In every huddle the mantra should be:
"Its 4th down....knock it down".
If the defensive players visualize knocking the ball down before the snap there should be NO reason to make an interception or the ball kept alive for a miraculous reception.

If you think the Auburn team that played tonight is the same Auburn team that played on Aug. 31, you're in for a BIG surprise when you see them in the BCS Championship. I've watched every game this season and what you saw tonight was the culmination of a lot of work and offense installation throughout the season.

In a recent article, Coach Malzahn admitted that Auburn had only installed about 25% of its offense for that first game against WSU because QB Nick Marshall wasn't on campus for Spring practice. He won the QB job about midway through Summer practice and got tossed into the fire and they installed as much offense as they could.

Auburn also didn't have a true starting RB at the start of the season. Mason, Grant, and Artis-Payne essentially split carries until the LSU game. That's when Mason became the true #1 back and Marshall really became a running threat. After that, when Marshall and Mason were learning more and more of the read option together, there was no stopping them. They really found their groove in/after the Texas A&M game and started getting more and more impressive against tougher and tougher competition.

You can see the evolution of the offense game-by-game, particularly in SEC play. I've grayed out the true cupcake games:

RuYds, TotYds, Mason+MarshallRushAtt (*SEC game)
295, 394, 24 (WSU)
301, 468, 22
120, 459, 20 *
213, 437, 40 *(LSU)
282, 375, 35 *
511, 712, 6 (Marshall didn't play)
379, 615, 47 * (TA&M)
422, 628, 16
233, 366, 41 *
444, 479, 34 *
323, 566, 46 *
296, 393, 46 *
545, 677, 62 *

If they played again today, WSU would get absolutely destroyed. No doubt about it. I think Auburn would still give up about 24 to them, but they'd put up 50+ on offense, instead of 31.

As for FSU, they didn't impress me against Duke, particularly in the first half. Sure, they exploded in the second half, but that was largely due to Duke mistakes. Auburn won't make those same mistakes and they will make FSU pay for their mistakes, which Duke did not do.

Plus, the ACC was atrocious this year. There's a reason FSU and Clemson will be the conference's only reps in the final BCS Standings. And, realistically, Clemson is only there for the same reason Duke was in the ACC Championship: lack of any real competition in the conference.

People will talk about FSU's defense, but it's ranked no better than Bama's or Mizzou's and that's against inferior competition. People will talk about Auburn's defense, but they always manage to make plays when they need to, as shown by their #7 ranking in Red Zone Defense.

There will be obvious comparisons to the 2010 BSC Championship that was expected to score in the 50s, on both sides, and didn't. But this time, I think it'll be much more likely. I expect a shootout and I expect Auburn's offense to bulldoze FSU for 300+ rushing yards and 500+ total yards. And I expect Auburn's defense to make the same kind of adjustments for the second half they've made all season and to stop FSU enough times to win by 2-3 scores. Auburn 48, FSU, 37

Auburn Advantage: Former Auburn QB Dameyune Craig was QBs Coach for FSU the last 3 seasons (2010-2012) alongside current FSU Offensive Coordinator James Coley. Craig left FSU in the off-season to join Auburn as Co-Offensive Coordinator/WR Coach. I doubt the FSU playbook has changed significantly in the meantime...

the ACC was atrocious this year

The exact same could be said of the SEC and has been by just about every college football commentator outside of SEC country. The only difference between SEC fans or commentators and cheerleaders are the skirts. Do people remember that in October Florida was ranked? Seriously, that's ridiculous. The SEC coasted on its reputation this year, not results. Look at the non-conference schedules, so weak. Georgia and SC played Clemson, MSU lost to Oklahoma State, the only decent teams I saw out of 14 schedules. The SEC lost to as many FCS teams as they beat ranked non-conference teams.

The only reason FSU won't need a third digit on the scoreboard is the clock continues to run when Auburn runs the ball for 2 yards.

Do people remember that in October Florida was ranked?
Sure. On Oct 6, they were ranked 17th, 2 spots ahead of Washington. It didn't work out well for either team, did it? In the same poll, Auburn received just 11 votes. Shows you how much stock you can put in rankings before November, doesn't it? I've long been against preseason and early polls. All polls in August and September are based solely on last year and guessing and October has too much carryover from that and a team's early games that aren't typically the tougher games on the schedule.

The exact same could be said of the SEC
It could be said, but that doesn't make it true. Jeff Sagarin has the SEC West as the top conference followed by both PAC 12s and then the SEC East. The ACC is on par with the Big Ten "Leaders".

The only reason FSU won't need a third digit on the scoreboard is the clock continues to run when Auburn runs the ball for 2 yards.
2 yards per carry? Doubt it. FSU gave up 3.14 RuYds/Carry to the #63 schedule in the nation. Auburn gained 6.46 RuYds/Carry against the #20 schedule in the nation. But I'll bite...

Care to put your money where your mouth is with a RotoGuru donation?

$25 donation that:

  1. Auburn averages at least 4.8 RuYds/Carry (average between AU offense and FSU defense) and...

  2. Auburn rushes for more than FSU's 116.5 RuYds/Game allowed.

Awh,

Other conferences having hope makes college football so fun. Everyone hating the SEC makes college football fun.

The expansion to Missouri and Texas is just going to make it harder for other leagues. Recruiting for SEC now has a big ole foot in the door of Texas.

The bowl games overall seem pretty boring this year but 3.

BCS National Game (Auburn vs FSU)
Rosebowl (Michigan State vs Clemson)
Orange (Clemson vs Ohio State)

Every other bowl is a complete bore IMO. They missed out on some great possible match-ups.

Baylor vs Oregon?

Even my Dawgs game is going to be a snore.. Nebraska vs Georgia? We saw this last year, at least mix it up some and give us Michigan this year..

I love the herds (cowherd) idea for rankings:

Have Vegas do it. Half the time the polls are done by some grad assistant who doesn't even pay attention to the rankings beyond their team.

And if you judge a conference by it's pipeline to the nfl it would be ranked as follows:

SEC - makes up slightly less than half of the nfl.
ACC - FSU had 12 drafted last season (led ncaa)
PAC 12 (hat tip to Pete Carroll)
Big 12

Florida was marred by injuries. When one is on their 4th string qb and lost 11 other starters due to injuries, the team will stink.

KKB - don't count out FSU that easily. They have just as much pros on that roster that auburn has plus the best player in college.

It won't be like 2010 when it looked like men (Auburn) vs boys (Oregon). By that I mean the eye test. Auburn just dominated Oregon physically and chip Kelly did a hell of a job keeping them in the game.

SZ - thoughts on Peterson hire?

I was somewhat surprised to see Sark leave after getting that huge cosmetic facelift and money into the program. Unlike Colorado, Washington is an awesome gig.

Just as I suspected. Thanks for playing!

Slizz, by no means am I counting out FSU. Auburn's defense will be a liability, but the offense will keep them in a position to win the game. If Auburn's defense can make some key stops, I can see them pulling away by a couple of scores. If they don't, then it really could come down to which team has the ball last.

Personally, I think Auburn's defense will make the key stops. It's what got them where they are. The offense gets all the praise, but they wouldn't have had certain opportunities without the help of the defense. The Bama game, in particular, comes to mind.

One thing I'm certain of: FSU has not faced a team like Auburn this season. Auburn has faced teams like FSU this season. We'll see if that matters.

First, their defense will have to show up. They haven't been seen in several weeks.

The scores and total yards from their last three games certainly give the impression that their defense has gone missing, but the key stops I'm talking about have been there and have often been a turning point in the game. For instance...

Auburn 43, Georgia 38
Key Stop #1: INT at Auburn 39 on Georgia's fifth drive
Key Stop #2: Stopped on 4th and 6 at Auburn 39 in 3rd Qtr
Key Stop #3: Stopped on 1st and 5 at Auburn 20 to end the game

Any one of those could have become the TD that made the "Prayer in Jordan-Hare" pointless, especially with Murray at QB. And people forget how close Georgia was to responding to the "Prayer" with that final drive.

Auburn 34, Alabama 28
Key Stop #1: TJ Yeldon stopped on 3rd and 2 at Auburn 26 in 1st Qtr (missed field goal)
Key Stop #2: Blocked punt at Alabama 27 setup Auburn's first TD in 1st Qtr
Key Stop #3: TJ Yeldon stopped on 4th and 1 at Auburn 13 in 4th Qtr (FG would have put game out of reach for Auburn)
Key Stop #4: Blocked field goal at Auburn 27 in 4th Qtr (FG would have put game out of reach for Auburn)

Alabama had two opportunities with about 5-1/2 minutes to go to put the game out of reach. Any one of those FGs would have meant that Alabama could use the victory formation on their final drive instead of making one of the most boneheaded decisions of all time.

Auburn 59, Mizzou 42
Key Stop #1: Dee Ford sack on 3rd and 9 on Mizzou's first drive of 4th Qtr
Key Stop #2: Ryan Smith breaks up pass to Dorial Green-Beckham on 4th and 1 on Mizzou's second drive of 4th Qtr (Auburn scores TD from 13 yards out as a result)

While the defense had three good stops in the first half, those didn't matter as much as the ones in the 4th Qtr that both demoralized Mizzou and helped Auburn's offense put the game out of reach.

I certainly don't expect Auburn to shutdown FSU. But I do expect them to keep FSU under the 53.0 points per game they've averaged.

Most of the talk from Auburn/SEC fans about FSU seems to be about their schedule and less about their team. FSU is just flat out more talented than Auburn and everyone else in the country this year, Alabama included. I think both teams are going to be a little surprised how good the other team is. FSU hasn't played anyone of Auburn's caliber except perhaps Clemson. Auburn has not played anyone of FSU's caliber.

FSU's defense which features a number of future pros and is arguably the best in the nation will not even need to shut down Auburn to win. All they need to do them is hold them to 30 or so and FSU will be fine. Auburn has given up an average of 36 PPG in their last three games. FSU's season low is 37 points. The reasonable conclusion is that FSU should be able to get to 37 points considering that a) FSU has one of the highest scoring offenses in NCAA history and b) Auburn's defense, especially its pass defense, is mediocre at best. Everyone gets theirs against Auburn's defense. Here are the best team's Auburn played with their season average PPG vs. what they scored against Auburn:

TAMU: 44/41
UGA: 38/38
Bama: 39/28
Mizzou: 39/42
LSU: 37/35

The better team usually wins these types of games. Auburn is a very good team with a great offense, great coach and a lot of momentum, but FSU is great in all phases of the game. If Alabama had FSU's kicker, they'd have won. If Alabama had FSU's kicker and FSU's passing game, they'd have won big. Similarly, I see FSU winning big.

FSU 44, Auburn 24.

Most of the talk from Auburn/SEC fans about FSU seems to be about their schedule and less about their team.
My guess is that all Auburn/SEC fans share the same reason for that: we just didn't see FSU play much, if at all, this season. I know I watched most of the first half of the ACC Championship, but then I became far more interested in the OSU/MSU game... for obvious reasons. :) I may have seen parts of FSU/Clemson, but I can't really recall. My viewing priority for the season was: Auburn, SEC, Virginia (distant third) and most of that is a result of me a.) finding CBS's games more intriguing and b.) having a bit of ACC fatigue because of my geographic location.

Here are the best team's Auburn played with their season average PPG vs. what they scored against Auburn
Interestingly, those are all SEC teams facing similar caliber opponents for most of their schedule. All of those teams had top-tier SOS ratings:

TAMU: 29
UGA: 9
Bama: 45
Mizzou: 31
LSU: 21

It's interesting that the team with the worst SOS in that list was held to 10 points fewer than their season average, even if it was almost exclusively a result of missed FGs and bad coaching decisions. The above is why FSU's SOS rating of 63 becomes a valid question based on the very points you've made.

For the absolute heck of it, I looked up Auburn's non-SEC FBS competition. I fully admit that even I don't read too much into this given the level of competition (or lack thereof), but it's still interesting compared to the teams you listed:

(AvgPts / PtsAgainstAuburn / SOS)
WSU: 29.8 / 31 / 1
ASU: 29.7 / 9 / 124
FAU: 26.4 / 10 / 99

I will never claim to be a math whiz, but there does seem to be a correlation between SOS and Auburn's Points Allowed relative to the opponent's Average Points. Of course, with such a small sample size of a college football season, even if a correlation existed, I don't know that it would even be statistically relevant.

Anyhow, please, please, please don't read too much into this. I really do find all of this just plain interesting. I'm an Auburn fan, so of course I think Auburn will win. But I fully recognize this will be one of the, if not THE, biggest challenges of their season. I simply can't wait for the game, so all of this kind of looking up this vs. that is keeping me from counting down the seconds to the game. :)

It ain't gonna happen, but I'd love to see Jordan Lynch win the Heisman.

An Alabama losing streak, I love it!

After seeing what Duke did to A&M, and got obliterated by FSU, just how lopsided will it be Monday?

That was an AMAZING game. I couldn't believe my eyes, it was like watching Rollie Massimino's Villanova against Georgetown in the first half.

I am in awe of Jameis Winston, this teenager gets his ass handed to him in the first half, the first time he has faced any adversity in college, and he rallies his squad to the win.

Auburn, you didn't get obliterated, you actually have a defense after all, great game.

Big congratulations to FSU and their fans. That was a great game and I'm proud of Auburn for proving to the doubters that they could not only hang with FSU, but actually lead for most of the game and play FSU to the wire.

From 3-9 to playing for the National Championship. I never could have imagined this season for Auburn and am proud to be an Auburn Tiger. Can't wait for next season! WAR DAMN EAGLE!

The last quarter of that game was freaking amazing. I was slightly pulling for Auburn but what a finish!

I do remember thinking that the Auburn player should have pulled up and run a few seconds off the clock when running wide open into the end zone for their last TD!
