0 Subject: RIFC 2014: Draft Discussion

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Aug 21, 2014, 16:38

The RIFC draft officially starts Sunday, August 24. The clock will be set at 4 hours but will not be active until Monday, with a moratorium from midnight-8am EDT. Please note: The clock will continue to run on weekends.

People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks. Similarly, the clock will be manually advanced to skip past anyone who already has a pick in arrears, unless other arrangements have been made in advance of that pick.

Remember that we are using a “Banzai” draft order, which differs from the traditional snake in that the order of the third round (and only that round) is reversed. The MFL system shows the correct order.

We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette. I’ll also use this thread for general announcements about the draft.

Note that trades during the draft are allowed. Trades should be announced here, and may include any combination of picks and/or players.

Players who are not yet listed at myfantasyleague.com may be drafted, and if so, a placeholder player will be assigned to your roster until that player is available. Once the draft is complete, you may no longer sign (or protect) an unlisted player.

Please be sure you understand all of the scoring and roster rules for this league. The current rules will be copied into post 2 of this thread.

Rationales will be expected for each pick, but delayed by two rounds. When we near the end of round two, I will provide instructions for those.

Please refrain from mentioning undrafted players, either in this thread, or in your posted rationale.

If you wish to track the draft without directly accessing the mfl site (e.g., if that site is blocked from your access at work), the following links may be used:

List view: http://69.13.158.155/cgi-bin/mfldraft.pl?league=20158
Grid view: http://69.13.158.155/cgi-bin/mfldraftgrid.pl?league=20158

This will also allow you to keep tabs on other RIFC drafts as well. Note, however, that this is strictly a viewing mechanism. It will not allow you to actually enter a draft pick, or set up a queue. For that, you will still need to log directly into the mfl site - or else email the commish to do it.

Here are some guidelines for executing your draft picks.
(These are copied from last year's thread. Please let me know if I have misspecified anything)

1. "My Draft List" - Under the "For Owners" menu (at the top), there is an item called My Draft List. You can think of this as your personal pre-ranking of players if you wish, although it has one important operational impact. If your 4-hour clock expires, then your pick will be automatically selected as the top name on your "My Draft List". Only if that list is empty will your pick be skipped. (More on this in a moment.)

2. "Pre-Draft Pick" list - You access this through "For owners->Draft"
These are the equivalent of the kafenatid "queue", with several important distinctions:
There is a separate list/queue for each round, and they do not carry over, and
If there is a name in your queue, that player will be immediately selected when it is your turn to draft. The only way to turn off a round-specific queue is to empty it. Therefore, it is important to keep your queues empty unless you are sure that they should be used. If you expect to want to load & unload your queue frequently (similar to turning it on or off), then you should probably keep a list of players in "My Draft list", as you can quickly pull up that short list to add players to any queue.

Of course, if you have players in "My Draft List", then you are also subject to having those players selected if you should time-out. Typically, that shouldn't be a problem, as timing-out should be a rare occurrence.

If you want to keep players loaded in "My Draft List" and you dont want to risk the top name being selected automatically upon timeout, then I suggest putting a "placeholder" player at the top of your list - preferably someone who is retired, or injured, or clearly not a viable pick. We can come up with specific placeholder options, if needed. If you time-out and a placeholder player is automatically selected for you, then you can have the commish replace that player with a real pick when you are available.

Note that because queued picks are automatically processed, there is no role tantamount to a designated picker. As commissioner, I can enter a pick on anyone’s behalf. Other than that, you – or anyone else with access to your MFL password – will be the only one who can directly enter a pick.

If any of these instructions are unclear, please ask. And if anything is incorrect, please alert!

Unlisted players
During the draft, any player may be drafted, regardless of whether or not the player is listed at the hosting game site. Once the draft is completed, unlisted players may not be added to any roster. This applies for any post-draft waiver processing as well.

In the event that a drafted player is not listed after the draft has completed, a placeholder player will be assigned to the drafting team, to be replaced by the drafted player as soon as he is available.

Position eligibility
Except as defined below, a players position eligibility will be that assigned by the league hosting site.

If a player is listed at one position when drafted and that position is subsequently changed by the hosting site, the manager drafting that player may elect to retain the original position. In this event, that player will keep the drafted position eligibility until he is dropped or traded, at which time the eligibility will revert to the hosting systems default position.

Injured Reserve
Each team will have one slot available for injured reserve. A player may only be placed on injured reserve when he is so designated by the NFL and the hosting site reflects that IR status.

If a manager adds a player who is already designated as IR at the time of his pickup (either through priority claiming or free agent pickup), that team must keep the player on its active roster until the following week. Players who are already designated as IR when drafted are not subject to this limitation, and may be placed in the IR slot immediately after the draft.

Once an IR player has returned to active status by the NFL, that player must be removed from the IR slot no later than the Wednesday following his activation. If an ineligible player remains in an IR slot after this time, the commissioner may forcibly drop such player after a 24-hour notice (via email) to the manager.

Priority Claiming
All free agents (any players not on a current roster) are subject to a weekly claiming process at 7:30pm ET on Wednesday, using a blind bidding process. Each team will be allocated a budget for the regular season of $100, with a minimum bid of $1. Ties will be broken in favor of the current standings (with applicable tiebreakers), worst-to-first. For 2014, blind bidding will use the conditional setup at MFL.

Starting at 10:30pm ET on each Wednesday, all free agents may be picked up by any team "first come, first served" Dropped players will not be subject to a one day waiver period.

During the postseason (weeks 14-16), the waiver schedule will be pushed back to Thursday so that any stats corrections (which might conceivably impact playoff results from the prior weekend) can be processed. For surviving teams in the championship bracket, blind bidding will take place at 3pm ET on Thursday, with free agents released for FCFS pickup at 6pm ET.

Immediately following the draft, undrafted players will be subject to a priority claiming process (blind bidding), with tiebreaking priorities equal to the reverse of the draft selection order (i.e, the order in which team selected their draft sequence.)

Starting five minutes prior to the scheduled start of each NFL game, no player in that game may be dropped, regardless of whether the player is an active or bench player.

Schedule
13 week round robin
Doubleheaders all weeks 1-13 (play each team twice)
Single elimination playoffs, weeks 14-16

Trades and trade deadline
During the draft, trades may include draft picks. Trades will normally be approved immediately by the Commissioner, assuming they are reasonably balanced. If league managers believe an announced trade is unbalanced, they should protest the trade ASAP.

After the draft, trades will be subject to a review period. For the first 24 hours following a trade, managers may protest a trade by posting a message at the RotoGuru forum, or by sending an email to the Commissioner. If at least 3 managers protest a trade within 24 hours of its announcement, then all managers will be polled within the next 24 hours. If seven or more managers vote to veto a trade, then it will not be approved. If a proposed trade is announced less than 24 hours before the earliest freeze for any player involved, then the entire trade will not be processed until the following week.

If a trade does not receive at least 3 protests, then it will be effective 24 hours after it is announced. If a trade receives at least 3 protests but the protests are not upheld in a full league vote, then the trade will be processed 48 hours after it is announced.

The trade deadline is the weekend following the final week with byes.

Stat corrections
Official stat corrections will be automatically applied. This typically happens on Thursday morning. In the playoffs, this can lead to an issue if a team is suddenly “back in the game”, but that team was unable to make roster moves the prior day. If a stat correction changes a playoff matchup at the last minute, then any impacted team will be given the opportunity to make a last minute roster move, if needed. The Commissioner will attempt to ensure that this provision is enabled as fairly as possible under the circumstances.

During the playoffs, once the first game of the week has started, no stat corrections will be allowed thereafter.

Playoffs
8 teams, single elimination
The 8 teams will be those with the top 6 W/L records plus the two other teams with the most points
The top four seeds will be based on W/L record (including applicable tiebreakers)
Seeds 5-8 will be based on total points for the other four playoff teams
Teams with equivalent W/L records are ranked based on total points first, then head-to-head record.
Bracket is fixed (no reseeding after each round)

Blind bidding will continue throughout the playoffs. At the beginning of the playoffs, the top seeded team will receive an additional blind bidding allocation of $16, the second seed will receive $14, … with the 8th seed receiving $2. These allocations will be added to any balances remaining from the regular season. Any blind bidding ties during the playoffs will be awarded in favor of the better seeded team.

If a playoff game ends in a tie score, the team with the better seed shall advance.

There will be no restriction on player add/drop transactions for teams still active in the championship playoffs. Teams which are not still active in the Championship playoffs may not make any transactions - adds or drops - even if they are still competing in the Consolation bracket.

I may have an issue the morning of the 28th as I'll be on location for a job and may not have any internet access and/or time to check in. I can leave a queue before heading out but being that I'm near a turn it's likely I'm up shortly after and it's sometimes rather difficult to leave a 2nd queue without knowing the outcome of the first.

I should have a better idea of how long I'll be gone as it gets closer. Hopefully it doesn't end up being a problem. I'd hate to timeout on a pick (for the first time!).

Note that you can have the MFL system send you an email or a text message for each draft pick, or at least when you are on the clock. Please take advantage of these automated alerts.

Find this under For Owners=>Franchise setup, then look under contact info (for email setup) or wireless (for text setup)

Why am I having such a hard time figuring out how to make my draft pick? I'm logged in to my team. On the draft page. If I click my team name it just goes to my team page.

Ah I see. You have to use the drop down draft link at the top of the page. The obvious draft link to the left is fairly useless.

Are we still doing rationales the old way or will we finally use a more convenient method (for Guru)? I feel like some sort of Google doc would be great as people can paste their entries in where they belong rather than making a complete mess out of a thread here with placeholders and forcing Guru to sort it all out.

My two cents on rationales - to me, the main advantage to doing rationales on this message board is that they are decently archived. It's nice to be able to go back and read rationales from whatever year with relative ease.

The method I'm using for rationale collection works pretty efficiently. You can either post in the comment section of the draft page at MFL, or post in the rationale collection thread.

I have a semi-automated method to collect and post from those sources.

BTW, I turned on the 4 hour clock this morning. Hopefully we won't need it.

We are at exactly the same pace as last year. Draft started on Sunday morning, and we were at pick 6.12 late Tuesday afternoon - just where we are now.

If that holds, then we'll finish on Monday (Labor Day) morning. Plan your weekend accordingly.

I just got home from work, and need to mow the yard while there is still daylight. It'll be an hour and a half from now before i'll be able to pick. Just a heads up in case it gets to me... Havent had time to digest recent picks and set a queue.

I have to leave shortly and won't be back until probably around noon and don't feel comfortable leaving a 17 player queue. It shouldn't get to me quick enough where I'd risk timing out, but who knows. Hopefully I have access through my cell and some time to check while I'm gone in case it does get to me quickly.

Looks like we'll probably finish the draft on Sunday.

Assuming that's so, I'll plan to set up a preseason blind bidding run for all undrafted players on Tuesday at 7:30pm ET. Then, at 10:30pm, free agents can be added FCFS. This will be the normal waiver schedule for Wednesdays during the regular season.

Blind bidding is now open, and all bids will be settled on Tuesday night at 7:30pm ET. First come, first served free agent pickups will begin at 10:30pm Tuesday night.

Please submit the remainder of your draft pick rationales. I'd like to close out that thread ASAP.

I have set up a general draft recap thread for those who would like to comment on their overall draft.

Once all leagues have completed their drafts, I'll post a consolidated draft pick summary.
