We'll use the same process for collecting rationales as last year.

You have a choice. You may either post your rationale in the comment area next to the associated pick on the MFL draft page,
- or -
you may post each rationale in this thread. Anything posted here will "trump" anything posted on MFL.

Regardless, each rationale is due no later than two rounds in arrears. I understand that, especially when queues are used, staying within two rounds will be difficult. However, please try to stay relatively current.

I will set up a master thread for all Rationales that will be organized in the proper draft sequence.

Only the 50 most recent replies are currently shown. Click on this text to display hidden posts as well.

10.04 Jordan, Cameron NOS DE
Jordan's fantasy numbers have improved each season. I expect him to become a top 5 fantasy DL as he continues to improve in his 4ths season. DL has the least depth of all IDP positions, so I thought it was important to draft one here.

11.10 Curtis Lofton, LB, NO
I really like coverage linebackers from high powered offenses, especially those that can score quickly. It just means that they'll be on the field tackling people over the middle. At least that's my reasoning. I also like LBs who have average to below average DLines so when teams do run usually the RBs will be into the second level and it gives my guys a chance for even more tackles. That's my reasoning behind Lofton.

12.05 Johnathan Cyprien, DB, JAX
I thought about drafting Weddle in round 11. I really wanted him as my DB1. Unfortunately he went between my picks in 10 and 11 so I decided to get a LB in 10 and get my top rated DB in round 12. I don't know much about Cyprien and I'm kind of excited to learn more about him throughout the season. His stats as a rookie were pretty solid and the defense should be on the field a lot this season.

Cameron Wake DE Mia

I needed to start addressing IDP's. Cameron was banged up early on last season, but over the 2nd half was possibly one of the best pass rusher. He's historically been one of the top DE's in football

10.09 Demarcus Ware DE Den

When I read this, how could I not draft the guy :

DeMarcus Ware said he feels "better than I did the last two years going into the season."
"Ware has also been dabbling in an eastern medicine technique called "cupping," where he lies flat on his stomach and puts a bunch of empty jars on his back. A hot flame is put in them, and it supposedly "sucks that bad blood out" of your pores. Whatever works for ya, DeMarcus. "

Now paired with Von Miller in Denver, I'm expecting some big things from Ware, with the way the Broncos can score, I'm sure he will be on the field alot.

110.06 Carlos Hyde RB SF

I wanted to add a RB, and Hyde was ranked high on my list. I'm not predicting the demise of Gore, but he is getting up there. Nothing is etched in stone, but Hyde could be first in line should something happen to Gore

Hyde has had a great preseason, and seems to be the type of power runner that would be perfect for SF

12.09 Hackeem Nicks WR IND

I loved Nicks as a Giants fan, but he was a huge disappointment last year, and seemingly is always "nicked " up. I wanted another WR and this is a gamble, that a change of scenery and with Luck slinging the ball, he can return to form of a few years ago.

13.10 DeMeco Ryans, LB, PHI
Another coverage linebacker in an extremely prolific offense. Ryans is a great LB and should rack up tackles on top of tackles.

14.05 Eli Manning, QB, NYG
Eli is a fun pick. First of all I know own both Manning boys. Second of all he plays Washington in week 4 who was one of the worst pass defenses in the league last season. Third of all he's extremely durable. Not that Peyton is a risk, but Eli will hold up all season and put up decent numbers if Peyton goes down.

13.12 Andre Williams, RB, NYG

I was split on going QB/RB/TE on this turn and it's hard to pick which 2 of the 3 to go with. I felt I needed to go RB with one of the picks having drafted Ray Rice even though I think Jeremy Hill should do pretty well and fill in when needed. Williams should get a decent amount of work with the Giants and could get goal line carries. It's possible he overtakes Jennings as the starter, but I'm not counting on it. Could have taken Devonta Freeman here as well, who would likely be the more popular pick with others, but I'm just not sure about the RB situation there. Freeman is the flashy play, but SJax is still there and last I checked Freeman was only 3rd or 4th on the depth chart in preseason.

14.03 Travis Kelce, TE, KC

I'd really like to grab a backup QB here but I'm going to see what's available next turn as I also need a backup TE behind Gronk. I'm a littled limited on my TE choices due to bye weeks and like Kelce the best out of the remaining TEs. This may be a bit early on him, but there's a team without a TE at all, plenty that also need a backup, and a long time between my picks. I'll just grab my guy here and see what happens. Kelce has been compared to Gronk and could put up some pretty nice numbers. He has very little competition for targets in Kansas City.

5.03 Michael Crabtree WR SF
Garcon and Fitzgerald left on the turn, along with the highly interesting Julian Edelman, so I’m back to the drawing board at WR. Cameron and Rice are still under strong consideration. I think there is a real chance Rice rebounds to RB1 this year; if he plays like his pre-2013 self, Bernard Pierce is not nearly talented enough to stand in his way. Cameron has dropped somewhat below his ADP, but picking him still feels like a bit of a luxury. As my third RB through five rounds, Rice would be a luxury too.

The WRs I looked at were Crabtree, Emmanuel Sanders, and DeSean Jackson. All have their warts, particularly extensive competition for targets. I settled on Crabtree as having the best combination of floor and ceiling for my taste at this point in the draft.

I took Crabtree over Rice because I think that WR2 is a more prudent pick than RB3 right now, and Jordan Cameron wasn’t enticing enough to sway me. Though I never know when, there always seems to be a point in each RIFC where I find a TE I like at strong value.

6.12 Paul Posluszny LB JAC
I was looking in a lot of different directions for this pair of picks. QB, TE, LB, and RB are all under consideration. I’m not sure that the RB I would take now is all that much different from what I can get at 8.12. There are still four QBs on the board that I like fairly similarly, but I’m not sure quite how much longer they will last. I expect Rivers to survive the long turn and Kaepernick to not, but am less certain about Wilson, Romo, and Cutler.

If I don’t take a TE here, I believe that this tier will disappear before I pick again. The same goes for elite LB. I’ve never taken an early linebacker before due to my ability to find mid- to late-round bargains, but I can’t deny that the elites have started to separate from the pack more than in the past.

I settled on jumping in at the start of the LB run. As for who to pick, I focused on Willis, Posluszny, and Derrick Johnson. The latter two have extremely strong track records and consistency in team situation. Willis is the former #1 LB but has performed at a lower (still exemplary) level since the emergence of [undrafted]. With [undrafted] still recovering from major surgery, this may be the year Willis returns to the top of the heap. Of the three, I decided Posluszny is the most likely to keep up the good work.

7.03 Russell Wilson QB SEA
My plan as of 6.12 was to choose either a QB or TE here, I wanted to see the turn before choosing a course of action. Toral took Romo and Fugazi chose a RB I don’t care for. That left four each of QBs and TEs in the current tier. Wilson is my top remaining QB by a small margin over Kaepernick. Rivers and Cutler would also be fine to own, but I don’t like them quite as much. No TE stands out quite as much from the pack, but I’m not sure I want to rely on obtaining my sleepers of choice. RB is also an option if I am comfortable waiting on QB.

In the end, I decided to take the guy I wanted rather than risk it. I got Wilson as the 12th QB, a ranking he has exceeded in each of his first two years in the NFL (10th and 8th). In 2014, he adds an elite talent to his receiving corps and has another season of experience under his belt. I view last year as his floor, and his upside is easily top 5. Maybe I could’ve gotten him 23 picks later, but I feel comfortable with his value now.

8.12 Jordan Reed TE WAS
Well, I was pretty much wrong about everything in these last two rounds. The elite LBs did disappear, but the flow stopped before reaching the next level down. Cutler was taken, but Kaepernick and Rivers are still around. Most importantly, I was wrong about similar RBs being available at 8.12 as 6.12. There was a major run in the 8th round that depleted the position severely. I’m now facing a real risk of not having a viable backup RB, but nothing I see left in the pool is enticing as an 8th/9th round selection.

Also, Jordan Reed remains from the promising upside TE group. He had a stellar rookie season, with only a pair of concussions as a negative. However, it is a very large negative. Another concussion and I will likely lose him for at least a month and very possibly the rest of the season, all while he takes up a bench slot. 110 picks in, though, I think the risk is worth the reward.

9.03 Tavon Austin WR STL
I would’ve taken Kaepernick here had he survived the turn, but I was not disappointed to end up with Tavon Austin. At 8.12, I had narrowed my interest to Reed, Kaepernick, and Austin. As long as I got two of the three, I was happy.

Tavon Austin has still not proven that he understands how to play wide receiver in the NFL. According to beat writers, that has not changed in training camp this year. If I feel this way, why did I take him? Well, he managed to average >10 PPG last year even with these flaws. Granted, a third of his points came in a single game, but only 24 WRs could say that. I got him as WR37. Add in the chance that he improves like many second-year receivers do, and I feel pretty good about this pick despite my misgivings.

6.11 Vontaze Burfict, LB CIN
This was the first time my #1 choice was taken before my pick came up. I really wanted Keuchly here, but Burfict was my second choice and should be a fine leader of my defensive squad.

7.04 Jeremy Maclin, WR PHI
I thought about getting a 3rd RB here but most of the starters were, gone while there were still a few #1 WR's out there. Of those, Maclin stood out because he becomes the main target in the high-flying Eagles offense, replacing DeSean Jackson. I love his potential this season.

8.11 Fred Jackson, RB BUF
Spiller or Jackson? Jackson or Spiller? In 2012 it was mostly Spiller, and in 2013 it was mostly Jackson. Most expect it to be Spiller this year but you never know, and at the very least Jackson should get most of the work on the goal line. As a RB 3 he should be good enough to fill in for my front RB's. He shares a bye with one of my guys but he was good enough at this spot to take anyway.

9.04 Calais Campbell, DL ARI
It was now the part of the draft where I decided to get two really solid DL's. The very top DL's were already taken, but the next tier was still there, led by Calais Campbell. Campbell should be solid this year with a good number of sacks defensive plays.

10.11 Jerrell Freeman, LB IND
I had Freeman last year and he really broke out, so I went with him again as my LB 2. Not much else to say - just a really good player.

11.04 Jared Allen, DL CHI
My second DE in last 3 picks. It's important to me to get these guys early because there tends to be a fairly large drop-off in production at this position. Allen is getting up there in age and declined somewhat from his top level of play, but he is still really solid.

12.11 Eric Berry, DB KC
My choice here was TE or DB, and when I set my queue it was Berry #1 and Clay #2, then Clay #1 for 13. Clay went right before this pick, changing my strat going forward. Still, I got Berry, one of the premier DB's in the game. He scores like a LB so it's like having a 4th LB out there every game.

13.04 Dexter McCluster, RB TEN
This queue was Clay #1, and McCluster #2, as there was a clear gap between Clay and the rest of the TE's. I like McCluster here as 4th RB as he scores most of his points on the return game, which tends not to slump from game to game. I needed a solid RB 4 has my RB 3 shares a bye with one of first two RB's. I'm just hoping the Titans use McCluster as smartly as the Chiefs did.

12.13 Ezekiel Ansah, DE, Detroit

What distinguishes Ansah from similarly rated DEs is his potential. The 2013 5th round draft choice's part-season performance last year projects to 14.5 sacks over a preseason. The risk is a shoulder injury, which has kept him out of preseason; he is supposed to play Friday.

13.02 Heath Miller, TE, Pittsburgh

It's time for a tight end. There is one other manager with nobody at TE yet, but there's only one name left that I feel comfortable with. Besides people in this type of league have a nasty habit of drafting 2 TEs, not caring that some of their league mates are left out. This was demonstrated when I_A_C grabbed Charles Clay off the top of my queue a few picks back.

Miller puts up pretty consistent production in catches and yardage but the question is whether he scores a lot of touchdowns like two years ago, or few touchdowns like last year. Miller is going to be the only Steeler receiver with height on the field, and many observers expect that that will lead Roethlisberger to look for him in the end zone. I did consider Travis Keice here for his breakout potential, but I'd like to start the season out with someone who has a sure job.

14.13 Nick Roach, Linebacker, Oakland

Nick Roach turned out to be a fine free agent signing for Oakland with 112 tackes, and 5.5 sacks. He's Oakland's #1 linebacker; he will fill my flex position. His bye week was right.

11.07 Mike Evans, WR, TB

Taking a shot on another rookie WR. #7 pick for the Bucs, 6'5" 230 lb, former basketball player, slated to start opposite V Jackson. Rookie WR's don't usually work out but his size makes him an appealing end zone target, and the lack of competition on the depth chart is nice. We'll see what happens. I really wanted to draft Paul Worrilow, and of course he went on the very next pick. IDP's are easier to fix during the season than the skill positions so I figured I'd keep piling on WR's and worry about defense another day.

12.08 Ryan Shazier, LB, PIT

Nice to have a Steeler on the team. He was the Steeler's #1 pick this year and has has sub 4.4 40 speed. That's pretty fast, especially for a LB. He led the Big 10 in tackles, and has had his fair share of tackles in the preseason. He's pretty good in coverage and should be out there on third down. I figured he had as much upside as any of the other LB left on the pile.

13.07 Wesley Woodyard, LB, TEN

I've had Wesley the past couple years. When he's on the field he is pretty solid. Curious to see what the move from Denver to Tennessee does for him.

14.08 Chris Ivory, RB, NYJ

I didn't really want to make this pick in the 14th but his name was creeping up toward the top of that ADP dropdown list in MFL (annoying) so I felt he was in danger of being hijacked at any time. Just a handcuff for Chris Johnson. Ivory showed last season that he can produce when in the starter role. I hate filling roster spots with handcuffs but I don't have enough RB depth to avoid it.

15.12 Mason Foster, LB, TB

I set a queue for this pick before going to bed and kind of wish I had just let it go until I was able to get on to make the pick myself in the morning. I may have grabbed Geno Smith if I picked manually as I had him in my queue but not high enough. My backup QB slot is a major concern at this point but none of the available guys are really worth spending a pick on right now. Cutler's bye week cut out 2 of the better QB options available as well. So instead I end up with Mason Foster who likely would have fallen a bit more. He's got good scoring capability if he's playing nickle downs, as he wasn't last year but supposedly is this year.

16.03 Jonathan Stewart, RB, CAR

Still need another QB but still can't justify taking one at this pick. I need to fill in my IDP starters as well but went with Stewart since IDPs are much easier to replace than RBs throughout the season. If I hit on some of my backup RBs I can trade them to shore up any roster weaknesses if I don't need to start them.

15.10 Olivier Vernon, DL, MIA
Once you get past the top 3 DL there's no real reason to draft one until late, and I've always had luck getting decent production out of the later round DL. Vernon had 10 sacks last year and reports are that he looks better in camp this year. For the 16th DL off the board I'm just hoping to get a regular 5 or 6 points a week.

16.05 Lance Dunbar, RB, DAL
I now own 2 RBs that I hope don't have to be in my starting lineup this season (Dunbar and West). But 5 RBs are the norm for me and right now I like the prospects of all of them. Dunbar is just insurance for my #1 pick. If Murray gets hurt or benched for some unforseen reason Dunbar has a lot of the same skills and if he was the starting back I think he'd be a 3rd or 4th round pick.

13.06 Daryl Smith LB Bal

I had actually hoped McCluster was available but he was taken two picks earlier. But I did need to get a LB.

The move last year from Jacksonville to the Ravens resulted in a standout season for Smith. This year the arrival of Mosley may hurt him, but he's still a solid contributor to the Ravens D.

14.09 Josh McCown QB Tam

I wish I could have this pick back. I had hastiley set a queue and I'm not sure how McCown wound up on the top of the list. I'm actually not sure how he wound up on the list at all.

Anyway, he was pretty solid filling in for Cutler last year. Maybe it will work out.

15.06 Stephen Tulloch LB Det

Tulloch is a solid LB, having at least 111 tackles each of the past 4 years. Last year he managed 135 tackles, including 93 of the solo variety.

He probably won't get allot of sacks 3.5 last year ) or interceptions, but's a pretty consistant point producer week to week

16.09 Eric Ebron TE Det

Back up TE, rookie, with upside.

Ebron is in a great system, with a great QB. He could end up being the #3 option in Detroit. Here's hoping

6.2 Matt Ryan, QB, Atl
Interesting that Guru selected Gore right after I had decided against him (will have to see how that turns out for me). Wanted to get one of the next tier of QB's that are quickly thinning out. Hoping to mark last year's Atl showing as a fluke and that they will come out stronger this year, and Ryan will be a big part of that. We'll see... Not excited with this pick, but didn't want to sift through what would be left 30 picks from now. If Cutler is still available, I'll probably regret picking a QB at this slot.

7.13 Greg Hardy, DL, Car
A bit surprised that the draft made it back to me. Didn't have a queue lined up, so looked through where I should focus. I like to focus first on DL for the defensive side where the points you can get drops off in a hurry. Really a glut of options on the LB side, so I looked who was out there still for DL. Hardy was in top four in a couple of rankings I found. Was liking what I saw until I saw the news of his domestic battery charges. Bad deal. but, I still thought he was the best option.

8.02 Maurice James-Drew, RB, Oak
Not overly enthused with this pick, but you can never have too many RB's, and Jones_Drew is currently penciled in as the starter in Oakland. Of course, he has a ton of miles on him. If he stays relatively healthy, he can fill in as needed for my starters.

9.13 Jared Mayo, LB, NE
The top linebackers have been disappearing over the past couple of rounds. Wanted to grab one that could be a top 5-10 LB. Don't look forward to having to decipher Bellicheck's injury hints week-to-week, though.

10.02 Reggie Wayne, WR, Ind
Kind of amazed this pick went through - I set the queue with about 10 picks ahead, and struggled to get separate queues set up for the 9th and 10th rounds… so half expecting to see I mistakenly got two LB. But, all is good. I'm a Colt's fan, so will be watching closely to see if Wayne has recovered from his injury last year. He still has a knack for getting open and is a good redzone target. Happy with him as my third WR. Got him last year in the 5th round... I had a queue of Wayne and Randle; the homer aspect and the presumed consistency pushed Wayne over the top, but he does have some age concerns.

11.13 Harrison Smith, DB, Min
Starting to address gaps in my lineup at this point. Smith had an abbreviated 2013 season due to injuries but is projected to be one of the top DB's this year.

12.02 Dwayne Bowe, WR, KC
I'd actually been contemplating Boldin leading into this pick, but opted for the aging WR from KC instead of SF… actually, a good portion of my roster is getting up there. Not sure I really needed another WR this early, but it doesn't hurt to have some depth.

13.13 Perry Riley, LB, Was
Should be a lucky pick - 13th pick of the 13th round. One of my keepers in G24 this year, so he must be good. He's been a solid tackler over the past couple of seasons (125, 115), and now doesn't have tackle-machine London Fletcher to compete with.

14.02 T.J. Ward, Den, S
I was targeting Morgan Burnett for this pick. After he fell off the board, I decided to stick to the DB (S) position and pick up Ward who I see as ranked similarly (but a bit lower). These past two picks were off of preset queues set about 8 picks in advance (well, the Riley pick was, this one I had two minutes to select between meetings and just picked the next best db)... If I had noticed the slow trickle of qb's off of the board I may have changed things up. But, I plan on keeping Matt Ryan healthy, so I'm better off picking team starters at this point.

15.13 Shonn Greene, RB, Ten
Now trying to target backups at key positions. I need RB/QB. Guru already has 2 qb's, so I can look at RB first. I had been thinking of getting Donald Brown here. As a Colts fan, I saw some signs from him off-and-on, and maybe he would get a chance to excel with a better offensive line. However, in some brief research saw he was currently third on the depth chart. Greene, however, is currently first at Tennessee. Not sure how long that will last, but speaks to regular touches should I need to play my fourth RB.

17.12 Kenny Britt, WR, STL

Another guy I draft every year only to be let down by injuries. This time, however, he comes cheap, so no big deal if he's hurt again. Great lottery pick for a guy who should be his team's WR1 and can put up WR2/3 numbers if all goes well.

18.03 Antrel Rolle, S, NYG

Could go any position here but figured I may as well grab my first DB. He's not much different from a bunch of others guys I could grab here or in a few rounds, but I need to start 2 so better grab at least one of the better safeties before I let them all slip away.

15.07 Danny Amendola, WR, NEP

Amendola suffered a groin injury in week 1 last season. The injury nagged him all year and he ended up missing 4 games. In spite of that, he still put up 633 yards and was second on the team in targets with 83. I wouldn't bet anyone cash that Amendola will make it through the season without missing any games, but it's clear that Brady trusts him as a target. He's more than capable of putting up some 100 yard games and should be a playable option for me a long as he is healthy. It's the 15th round so there is no risk here.

16.08 Micah Hyde, DB, GB

I've been monitoring his position battle with "undrafted" dude. If not for the position battle I would have targeted him several rounds earlier. Although the Packers haven't announced anything yet, it appears that Hyde will be a starter on defense, and he is listed at KR & PR on the team website (I think he may primarily return punts and only occasionally return kicks, but hard to tell). Last season he had a 12.3 average on punt returns.

I got some use out of him last season, and I think his move from CB to FS/dime CB should lead to more opportunities. Now I'd just like to hear an official announcement from the Packers that he is their starter. I figured he was on at least one other RIFC radar so I got antsy and pulled the trigger.

17.07 Cody Latimer, WR, DEN

He's a receiver for the Broncos.

He's a bit of a Welker handcuff for me, but more than that, he's 6'3", has good hands, and ran a 4.39 40 with a broken foot. If he gets the opportunity, he will put up some big numbers in Denver.

15.02 Jarrett Boykin, WR, Green Bay

Haven't yet drafted a WR4 Boykin has beaten out the rookie for the 3rd wide receiver position in Green Bay. They don't throw to their backs much or have a dominant tight end and run 3-wide a lot so he should get some work. 55 catches and 750 yards is a typical projection. If a WR goes out, he could do more.

17.06 Aaron Dobson WR NEP

I think this is a reasonable gamble at this point. The Patriots expected Dobson to be their big play wide out last year but he was hampered by injuries. When he did play he managed to put up respectable numbers.

Dobson is one of the few down field threats on the Patriots. There's only so many " underneath " passes Brady can throw, he's got to go deep at some point.

Off season surgery limited him in training camp, but did manage to play in the final preseason game and managed 3 catches for 57 yds and a TD. Decent.

I needed to grab my first DB at this point and DJ seemed like a reasonable pick. After taking a starting spot he posted numbers that would have him ranked 21st over a full season

19.06 James Starks RB GBP

Handcuff time, although if Lacey goes down, I'm probably screwed anyway.

Starks should be the starter inn the event something happened to my #1 pick and has the ability to fill in nicely. One concern is he is injury prone himself, but truthfully I'm hoping I never have to use him.

20.09 William Moore S ATL

I had Moore last year and he had a great season. After signing a new contract he had career highs in tackles, and had 2 sacks and 3 Int's.

Nothing flashy, just consistant.

19.12 Johnny Manziel, QB, CLE

Well, I guess it's time to finally take a QB. There are a few options available, none enticing. The top option has the same bye as Cutler so I'm passing on him. I'm grabbing Manziel here because he should be starting by the time I need another QB to start (week 9). I figure Manziel has as good a shot as the rest of the QBs remaining to put up decent numbers. A Cutler injury will possibly devastate my team depending on who is available on waivers.

20.03 Christine Michael, RB, SEA

I actually can't believe Michael is still available. I'll gladly take him here, huge potential if Lynch were to get hurt, even if he's currently listed behind Turbin.

11.11 Cooper, Riley PHI WR
Adding some depth at WR. Cooper is a tall deap threat WR who seemed to have some chemistry with Nick Foles when they were both promoted from the 2nd team last season. He will be the number 2 WR again this season for the Eagles.

21.12 Chris Long, DE, STL

I'll likely be rotating DE2s this year since I didn't take one earlier. Long can put up some good weeks but likely won't be consistent. The Ram's dline is going to be nasty, so hopefully he can do some damage for me.

22.03 Phil Dawson, K, SF

Was planning on grabbing a kicker in the last 2 rounds but I couldn't pass on Dawson.

23.12 Malcolm Floyd, WR, SD

Will be the Chargers WR2 which should equate to pretty good numbers. Good WR depth until the bye weeks start.

24.03 LaRon Landry, S, IND

Landry should put up good tackle numbers, big plays are just a bonus with him at his age.

21.06 Khalil Mack LB Oak
Some sites have him listed as a DE, most as a LB, including ours. Do we grant additional position eligibility in football as they do in baseball/hoops? His value would be much higher in the event he is listed as a lineman.

Huge upside either way, Raiders GM compares him to Clay Matthews with double digit sack potential

22.09 Blair Walsh K MIN

I set a queue this round with all kickers, and wound up with Walsh. He's got the leg to hit form long distance and I'm hoping the Vikings manages to give him scoring opportunities

23.06 Gerald McCoy DT TAM

I generally prefer DE's but McCoy probably ranks only second to Gino Atkins as an interior type. A reasonable pick in round 23

16.02 Geno Smith, QB, NYJ
All of my eggs in the Matt Ryan basket it would appear. Actually preferred EJ Manual here as long as I'm picking through the lowest tier of starting qb's, but Manuel has the same off-week as Ryan.

17.13 Lance Briggs, LB, Chi
Fitting the mold of a good part of my roster - older players who missed time last year because of injury. He should be the main guy in Chicago for tackles.

18.02 Garrett Graham, TE, Hou
I waited too long to snag Dwayne Allen - who really looked good at the end of 2012 and in the preseason last year, but then went down in week one. Graham was a solid contributor last year by finding the endzone somewhat regularly. WIth Vernon Davis as my primary TE, Graham won't see much PT.

19.13 Kyle Williams, DT, Buf
Was still short a second DL. Had one strong one, and now, the pickings are much slimmer. Simply sorted the available lineman by projected tackles. Williams was near the top; he does get a high number of sacks for an interior DL as well.

20.02 James White, RB, NE
When taking a flyer on a RB in the late rounds, you could do worse than picking a Patriot. With Belichick's propensity for surprising choices as his primary running back, the rookie may get a chance this season.

21.13 Navarro Bowman, LB, SF
Since we have a DL slot this year, it's time to use it. After a horrific injury in last year's playoffs, Bowman is likely out for a good part if not the full season. I'll stash him away until an announcement is made either way.... If he comes back this year, I'll put the tackle machine straight into my lineup.

22.02 Steven Hauschka, K, Sea
Top 5 kicker on a top team. As deep as this league is, and as little real talent that is available, I don't have a problem going a round or two early to get a sure thing for my kicker.

23.13 EJ Manuel, QB, Buf
Went ahead and grabbed a third QB. If Ryan should get hurt, then I can choose between Manuel and Geno Smith… I really prefer to not have to do that, so need to protect Ryan.

23.14 Tyrann Mathieu, Ari
Got a text that I had timed out on my previous pick and that I was up again. I remembered there was a safety I was looking at the other day. Rather than slow things down anymore, I simply went to the draft screen and picked the top available safety. We'll see how the Honey Badger does.

13.09 Ryan Tannehill

He has been quietly progressing since joining the league more than two years ago. Though his stats have not been eye-popping, he should be a good backup play-caller on my team. And if he could manage to be sacked much less he could be a viable option were Luck to injure. I hesitated to use him in last year’s fantasy playoff while sticking to Stafford even the latter suffered from the last-season collapse, costing me any chance to win the league. Hopefully, Luck does not have to go down that route, eliminating my need to start Tannehill for more than one week.

14.06 Kenny Vaccaro

In this draft, I always in the catch-up mode filling out the IDP spots on my team. No exception to my defensive back positions. Vaccaro was one of the most impressive rookies last year and should have little trouble producing more in 2014.
15.09 C.J. Mosley

I left a one-player queue (Tulloch) here but that was emptied three picks earlier. Mosley, rookie from Bama, is slated to start opposite to Daryl Smith and should be having no problem prospering there.

16.06 Bernard Pollard

After having Vaccaro as my first DB (S) because of his tremendous upside, I would like to have someone anchoring the backfield of my team and Pollard, who is not flashy but consistent, fits that bill.

17.09 Adrian Clayborn

I tried to get my second DE here. Like some other league manager indicated, choosing defensive players is more of like throwing the dice. When making any pick, I just got no information other than the YTD points in the previous season. Just hope the people I chose on that basis could at least somewhat duplicate what they achieved in 2013.

18.06 Tim Wright

I think I have explained why I needed to have three tight ends on my team. Wright reportedly may play the role of moving tight end in Aaron Hernandez. He may get extra playing time if Gronk could not hold up.

19.09 James Jones

I added some WR depth here though Jones may eventually end up starting on most occasions. No longer catching the football from Rodgers, Jones may not get the opportunity to find the end zone that often. On the other hand, he might become one of the favorite targets of Schaub or even Carr, which could help improve his yardage total this year. Fantasy shark projects him to receive more than 1000 yards and if that is the case using the 19th pick on him is a steal.

20.06 Jurrell Casey

He just signed a lucrative extension with Titans because of his last year’s performance. He should have a lot to offer here and should rotate with both Wilkerson and Clayborn as the season progresses.

21.09 Clay Matthews

Coming off an injury-marred season, he should bounce back a lot this year as he should continue to be the leading force in Green Bay defense. I counted on his edge rushing ability to either have QB hit or sack the opponent’s play-caller despite I did have Miller on my roster.

22.06 Adam Vinatieri

He is old but still capable of performing at the elite level. Kicking for the high-octane Indy’s offense, he should have plenty of opportunities to score for my team. And that he could still kick from the 50-yard out could help me a lot. I did consider other kicker option and thought about pulling the trigger a bit earlier, but with Justin tucker and Dan Bailey off the board I chose to wait longer here.

23.09 Latavius Murray

He is to be behind MJD and DMF in the pecking order at the start, but considering the health of the latter two could be a huge question mark he might end up getting much more time or even starting for Raiders. He is of course my late round flier here.

24.06 Verner Alterraun

Though I tended to draft safeties rather than corners for my DB positions since I am in belief safeties typically could generate more points than corners, I still used my last pick of this year for someone I am nowhere close to being familiar with.

18.08 Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, HOU

Hopefully he only sees action on Brees' bye week. Houston hosts Indy on Thursday night on week 6, and Fitzpatrick is a pretty consistent/conservative 80 passer rating type of QB. Hopefully I get 15 points from him come week 6 and that's the end of the story.

I kind of considered Everson Griffen here as my 2nd DL, and Toral took him just 5 picks after this.

19.07 Ronnie Hillman, RB, DEN

If something happens to Ball, then Hillman becomes pretty playable. Couldn't think of any good reason not to draft him.

20.08 Koa Misi, LB, MIA

Misi takes the MLB job and will be a 3 down LB. I think he has a pretty fair amount of upside. If he doesn't put up decent points right off, there are other LB's out there.

21.07 Jerry Hughes, DE, BUF

Hughes was a first rounder back in 2010 for the Colts but he was stuck behind Freeney and Mathis for a couple years, then switched to 3-4 OLB, then last year played both LB and DE. He only played about 50% of the team's snaps but had 10 sacks. Last year played mostly pass downs, either rushing the QB or dropping back in coverage. Buffalo has moved to a 4-3 and Hughes won't be a hybrid LB anymore. He is set to play DE on both pass and run downs (the majority of run downs anyway). On pass downs he will be rushing the QB rather than occasionally dropping back. All these factors make him a potential breakout IDP this season.

22.08 Cody Parkey, PK, PHI

The Eagles have a decent offense and Parkey kicked some 50+ FG's in pre-season. Good enough for me.

23.07 Bryce Brown, RB, BUF

I have one slot left that I can draft an offensive player with. I think Brown is the actual RB to have if Spiller goes down, and from what I know of him he has enough talent to actually put up good fantasy numbers if given the chance. There are ome RB's out there who aren't worth owning even if they do get the starting gig. I don't think Brown is one of those. His career numbers are 190 for 878, 4.6 ypc, 6 TD.

14.11 Carson Palmer, QB ARI
Last year I got Philip Rivers in the 15th round and he ended up outscoring my #1 QB. I find it important to have a strong QB #2 even if he ends up only filling in the bye week. Palmer was the last of the pure pocket passers left - someone who I can feel comfortable starting for my team should something happen to Cam.

15.04 Tyler Eifert, TE CIN
In most drafts I tend to punt TE because the top ones tend to go before I am ready to draft them, and usually by the time the top 5 go off the board it's a pick-em. Eifert shared duties at TE last year and now is poised to take over the job in his second season. Hoping to get 6 ppg and maybe a surprise for more.

16.11 Antoine Bethea, S SF
Time for my second DB here, and took Bethea as a solid tackler moving over to a better defense.

17.04 Justin Houston, LB KC
This is the part of the draft where I am starting to look at the team as a whole and what I need to fill it out. I really needed a third LB to be the flex IDP, but most of the top LB's were gone at this point. Houston is a pure pass rusher so not as consistent as a tackling LB, but still should score well.

18.11 Miles Austin, WR CLE
I realized at this point I had no backup WR's so had to scramble a bit. I have to admit I took Austin purely on the advice of MFL, and I hope they are right in that he becomes the #1 WR in Cleveland.

19.04 Matt Prater, K DEN
My only obvious mistake of the draft. I wanted Gostkowski here and he was #1 in my queue, but taken. Prater was #2 and added without even thinking about looking at his player page. My mistake and it cost me a pick in the draft. I've done this with kickers before - a couple years ago I took a kicker who had gotten released the week before. The strategy now is to keep Prater and have two kickers through the first half of the season to see who shakes out.

20.11 Bobby Rainey, RB TB
Rainey is nothing more than Doug Martin's handcuff. My only issue is my 5 RB's are on only two different byes, which means I will have to play both Martin and Rainey in week 7.

21.04 Rod Streater, WR OAK
My 5th and last WR is Streater, the #2 man in Oakland. He was decent and playable as a #5 WR last year. Oakland's offense doesn't seem to be that much improved, so we shall see if it helps Streater or not.

22.11 Kam Chancellor, DB SEA
Just wrapping up the backups now. Chancellor is a decent DB who should be a fine backup in bye weeks.

23.04 Jadaveon Clowney, LB HOU
This is purely a spec pick. Despite being the #1 player in the draft, pass rushers tend to have a longer learning curve than other positions. If Clowney somehow catches lightning in a bottle in his rookie season, it could be a good year.

24.11 Nick Novak, K SD
I had to take a kicker here to replace Prater. Novak is nothing special but not bad either. I'll keep him for awhile and see how he's doing compared to Prater when he comes back, unless I have some pressing injuries.

12.14 Anquan Boldin, WR, SF

Grabbing a WR3 here, Hopefully Boldin discovered the fountain of youth or recently took up anabolics. Boldin did seem like a little safer play compared to the unproven receivers available. I'm sure I'll draft some of those guys as well.

13.01 Antonio Gates, TE, SD

TE2 Time and you can do a lot worse than Antonio Gates. Even with a decrease in his offensive role he should still see plenty of end zone targets. The other players available at this position were just as old with less talent or unproven so I guess I'll go with talent.

14.14 Knile Davis, RB, KC

Handcuffing here, wish I could have waited a couple more rounds but his name was reaching the top of the ADP.

15.01 DeAndre Levy, LB, DET

Drafting my first linebacker here. I should get plenty of production from Levy, if I don't I'll cut him. There were some tempting receivers like Boykin and Amendola But I gotta take a LB sometime so here we go.

16.14 Sheldon Richardson, DE, NYJ

I had Sheldon last year and he didn't disappoint. I'm not expecting player of the year but he could be a nice surprise. I probobly could have waited a round on this one but I was all flustered because a really wanted Brandon Spikes here...

17.01 LeGarrette Blount, RB, PIT

MY MAN! Blount came through for me in a major way last season and now he's a Steeler, NICE! This dude has the potential to see some serious play time this season. 18.14 Brad Jones, LB, GB

Drafting a tackler here, pretty generic but he should put up some decent numbers. other players available here are Ronnie Hillman and James Starkes both tempting but I'm in need of some solid LB'S.

19.01 Jamie Collins, LB, NE

Collins showed some promise towards the end of last season. I don't like having this many Patriots on my team so if he gets out of line it will be easy to cut him.

20.14 Mike Williams, WR, BUF

Kind of a receiver handcuff pick here. Some sports writers are predicting Williams will have a breakout season... I don't know about any of that but I figured I better hedge my bet.

21.01 Brian Robison, DE, MN

I was hoping for Geno Atkins here but waited one round too many. So now I'm scouring reports and charts and this is what I came up with. I should have just taken my kicker here.

22.14 Alfred Blue, RB, HOU

Just taking a chance here, If Foster goes down Blue will see some play time. He's listed as the number two on the Texans official depth chart. I'm a little surprised he was still available really. Ehh it's wort a shot.

23.01 Brandon LaFell, WR, NE

I have read a few things about Brandon and Tom getting along well and that tom likes having a taller target at wide out. Well if any of that's true this could end up being a great pick. I probobly should have taken Roy Helu though.

24.14 Matt Bryant, PK, ATL

I'm thankful that Bryant was still there. After him I just couldn't make up my mind. Ehh, I never finish the season with the kicker I drafted anyway.

Sorry for the delay.

17.10 Doug Baldwin, WR, SEA
I don't trust Harvin to stay healthy. I think Baldwin has a rapport with Wilson and he'll be the top reciever in Seattle. In the 17th round I figured I should probably take my 4th WR too, so if he's a #1 for his team I think this is great value.

18.05 Michael Johnson, DL, TB
I need to take a DL2 at some point so I thought I would grab one here. With Clayborn and McCoy there to take up some double teams I could see Johnson getting loose frequently. 2013 was a rough season for him, but I can see a return to the 2012 levels with a new scenery and some more talent around him.

19.10 Eric Reid, DB, SF
My second DB. I think he's going to put up a huge tackle total and tackles don't really slump or have ups and downs. 75 solos and 100 total aren't out of the question.

20.05 A.J. Hawk, LB, GB
I don't really like this pick and I wish I had it back. I don't know why I put Hawk in my queue, but I did. He could be cut quickly.

21.10 Jared Cook, TE, STL
Cook and Bennett had a pretty solid schedule combined. I think I could almost roll a TE by committee, but if Bennett struggles I think Cook could step in for me and put up regular points.

22.05 Nick Folk, K, NYJ
This was my 5th Kicker on my board. I'm really glad he was there for me to take, but the run of the kickers before this makes me think I should have gone a round earlier.

23.10 Jerricho Cotchery, WR, CAR
While I don't think he'll get 10 TDs this season, I do think he could be Cam Newton's red zone target.

24.05 Aaron Williams, DB, BUF
Final round, I needed a DB, he was the best available.

16.12 Brandon Spikes LB BUF
After taking my first LB in round six, I haven’t added one since. Once the elites left the board, my interest diminished significantly. There are always a few names that slip through the cracks, which allows me to focus more on the offensive side of the ball. Brandon Spikes has every reason to be one of those diamonds in the rough. He produced very well on a per snap basis for the Patriots but too often was left on the sidelines for passing downs. Now that he is a Bill, Spikes is locked into a three-down role. Thanks to the injury to Kiko Alonso, he also has little competition for tackles. The situation is ripe for a breakout, so I hope he can take advantage.

Had they dropped one more round, I also would’ve considered any of Devont’a Freeman, Mason Foster, Shonn Greene, Jonathan Stewart, Thomas Davis, and Bernard Pollard. All were nice adds 200 picks in.

17.03 Dwayne Allen TE IND
This wasn’t an easy pick for me. I like a number of players here, and I’m not sure which (if any) will be available the next time around. Justin Houston is a stud rush LB, capable of averaging 10+ PPG. Adrian Clayborn and Michael Johnson are pretty much the last DL I consider worth drafting. The upside flier WRs have once again gained the favor of drafters, and Antrell Rolle is tempting at DB.

Then there is the sleeper TE I favor, Dwayne Allen. He put up a solid rookie season in 2012 and then got hurt last year. Tight ends frequently show growth during the early part of their careers, and I think Allen has as good a chance as any. He clearly has the trust of his coaches and QB in all aspects of football, so he should be on the field more than his classmate [undrafted].

Based on RIFC ADP, Allen is the most likely player to still be around next time, but I feel the dropoff at his position is more severe than the others, and the ADP sample size is too small to put much faith in it. Hence, Allen was the choice.

18.12 Stephen Gostkowski K NE
I am surprised that no kickers have gone yet in this draft. I know that it’s very easy to find a good kicker in the free agent pool, but that doesn’t mean that a top option is without value. Gostkowski has been the top kicker in 4 of his 8 NFL seasons, including each of the last two. I think that the value he offers here is higher than that of whatever DB or offensive flier I would take, especially given the talent drain that occurred between 17.03 and now (Houston, Britt, Roberts, and the TB DL guys to name a few). He won’t be on the board come round 20, so I might as well get ahead of the pack and take my kicker now.

19.03 Stevie Brown DB NYG
I guess it is time to finally take a DB. Stevie Brown performed well in this role two years ago before tearing his ACL in the 2013 preseason. Word from camp is that he looks good and has locked down a starting job. The Giants don’t have any strong linebackers, so there should be tackles available for the secondary.

20.12 Brian Orakpo LB WAS
Orakpo was LB #30 last year despite missing the last 1.5 games of the season. I expect him to perform at about this level again. Because he is a talented rush linebacker, there is both upside and downside to that projection. He is a guy I targeted this year for RIFC, as I feel his recent injury history has left him solidly undervalued (Notice a trend in my late round picks?). Jacoby Jones would’ve been another possible choice here had he lasted.

21.03 Roman Harper DB CAR
Roman Harper has basically been a DB1 for his entire career. Now in his 9th season, he’s coming off an injury-marred down year, not to mention switching teams for the first time. There’s also a case of turf toe that he developed early in preseason. The Panthers don’t have the best history of fantasy production from their safeties, but they’ve also never had a player like Harper in the lineup. Here’s hoping 2014 marks a return to form. If not, he’s an easy drop.

22.12 Keenan Robinson LB WAS
He’s a three-down inside linebacker for a team that has shown the ability to support two start-worthy players at that position. Pectoral injuries have held him back in previous years, but now he’s healthy and ready to go. I also considered [undrafted] to fill my backup LB slot, but I think Robinson has a better chance of hitting his upside projection.

23.03 Matt Asiata RB MIN
He may not be the most talented running back, but he’s the fairly clear backup to Adrian Peterson. As such, he has clear value to my team. Given my lack of depth at the position, an injury to one of my top two RBs is likely to be very painful. Having AP’s handcuff will mitigate that downside at least slightly

24.12 Kenbrell Thompkins WR NE
Though other names are being hyped more heavily in the New England receiving corps, Kenbrell Thompkins is the guy who has been starting throughout the preseason. Presumably, the targets will be spread around in this offense, but I figure I’ll give Thompkins at least one week to prove me wrong. Other names were certainly considered, but a sixth WR made the most sense from a roster construction standpoint.

14.07 Andrew Hawkins WR CLE
I am looking to add some WR depth as my WR3 is not particularly strong. Hawkins is a starting wideout and has performed sufficiently in the past. It isnt the best offense, but I can see Hawkins doing the best out of there wide receivers.

15.08 Benny Cunningham RB STL
Stacy was a stud last year because of opportunity not any strong skill set. I could see Stacy having trouble holding the job. I heard strong things about Cunningham in camp and am holding him for that off chance (although Mason looms as ell)

16.07 Tyvon Branch S OAK
Branch was a consistent IDP performer prior to getting injured early last year. Hopefully he is healthy and can put up solid IDP points for me.

17.08 Donald Butler LB SD
I needed another linebacker and Butler was one I saw on a few lists

18.07 Charles Johnson DE CAR
Johnson was one of the last DE I would have any confidence in. Hopefully he points up stats worthy of a roster spot. DE gets thin quick.

19.08 Christian Kirksey LB CLE
I like Kirkseys upside but am not thrilled with his bye. This is my 8th week 4 bye player so getting through that week could be tough. Still several of them I am not tied to so should not be too challenging

20.07 Johnathan Grimes RB HOU
This is just a gamble on Fosters lackof durability. I do think he may be ahead of Blue if foster did get injured.

21.08 Marquise Lee WR JAC
Rookie WR who tailed off his last year at USC. Maybe he reaches his potential this year. He should have a decent opportunity as none of the other WR are that dominant. Weakness at QB limits the potential.

22.07 Calvin Pryor S NYJ
I needed a safety and most of my favorites had the dreaded week 4 bye. I went with a rookie who hopefully offers some upside. Or he gets replaced.

23.08 Richard Rodgers TE GB
I need a backup for Camerons bye week. He may not be the TE to own in this offense but I figured I would give him a chance. I could be scrambling to the WW if this doesnt work out as Cameron is off early.

24.07 Nate Freese PK DET
A dome kicker in a high scoring offense. 5 of last 6 were rookies.
