RIFC Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

1. Once 1 knew I has 2nd position, I planned to draft whichever of McCoy and Charles were available, to draft an absolutely solid RB2 if available in the late second or go otherwise to go for an WR, to pick Watt in the 3rd round if he were available, to have picked 2 RBs and 3 WRs/ or 2 WRs and a TE at the end of the 5th round, to begin picking IDPs by round 6, picking 1 in every 2 rounds thereafter until I had everything but one DB, to hold off on QBs until the 12th-to-16th QB picks (excepting the fluke eventuality where one of the top 3 was available in round 2), to pick a second QB early if i picked the first late; to hold off on a TE; and not to ignore kick return yardage.

2. I was able to do this except in the QB area, where I showed 'a streak of yaller' and picked Romo as the 11th off the board. Not a disaster but I might have waited 2 rounds. But Cutler was gone 2 rounds later and he was the one I would have wanted.

If I had it to do over, I would have picked Jones-Drew instead of Romo and then picked Ingram *and* a quarterback the next set of rounds. I'm not sure I would have been better off.

But here's a list of others' picks I liked (one per round, leaving some rounds out, this is a long draft, and leaving our late QB pix that I thot were best of round):

1.07 Holt -- Graham
2.04 Bonka --Gronkowski
3.08 Holt --Gerhart
4.10 I_A_C -- Harvin
5.14 Guru -- Gore*
* STEAL OF DRAFT
10.06 ywk -- Randle
11.05 I_A_C -- Pierre-Paul
14.03 Bonka -- Kelce
15.14 Guru -- Brown
16.03 Bonka -- Stewart
17.12 Bonka -- Britt
21.13 Slackjawyed Yokel -- Bowman
21.11 Nerfherders -- Chancellor
23.07 Holt -- Brown
24.04 TD -- Rodgers

A lot of old RIFC veterans on this list.

3. I like the teams of, in alphabetical order, fugazi, I-A-C, and Nerfherders.

4. I thought the IDP picking started late. They start every week, you know, while you RB4 or WR5 doesn't. Perhaps this is because I have had to train myself to pick them earlier and earlier, finding I do better.

5. If I told you that, I'd have to kill you.

1. My draft strategy, normally is: hoard RBs early, and hold off on IDP till the 2nd half of the draft, because there is normally still value available. Unfortunately, in recent years, even though I find I've exectued well on doing the above, I found that the managers on RotoGuru are getting much better at their IDP drafting. Thus, I haven't able to field a strong enought IDP line-up. This year, I decided I'd focus on value drafting as much as I could... including at IDP early. I was able to draft 4 starting IDPs in the first half of the draft, and was still able to get some great serviceable RBs. Also, since I had my 3 starting wideouts drafted by the end of the 4th, I didn't bother with any backups till the 18/19/23rd rounds.

2. Favorite picks: (most of them)

Harvin @ 4.10
Jacoby Jones @ 19.05

Do-Overs: (none really)

Peterson @ 14.10?

3. I specifically stayed away from Drafting next to Guru and Bonka, and they didn't disappoint... they both had great drafts. Slackjawed Yokel and YWK have a pretty solid IDP groups, so they should be pretty competitive week to week... and the top 4 (fugazi, Wheatfarmers, twilson, and Nerfhearders) have pretty solid RB core, so thats always admirable.

4. IDPs not going off the board sooner? I was surprised to get both Lavonte David and Luke Kuechly.

5. Maybe not grab the 2nd LB when I did? Maybe grab a better RB2?

Interesting... according to the Consolidated Draft Results

My team "over-payed" by an average of .4 rounds per pick (or 135 slots for the 24 picks).

Looking at where I spent most of those "reaches", I'm not so sure how many people think that return men still offer enough value in our format?

I_A_C: I thin k other drafters are aware of the return yardage rules. Just being a "return man" doesn't impart magic qualities. And when "return men" show their skills at WR, then they sometimes stop being used as return men.

Just my opinion.. But I am not a 2-time champion, as, you remind us, you are.

LOL. I'm not a two time champion (yet). I've actually yet to win the top RIFC grouping. Maybe that's why after 10 years I'm still trying?

I do have a qualifier win, and two Keeper league wins though. :)

I reached for quite a few players based on the consolidated results. Better to reach and get who you want than wait and not get him. As long as the reach isn't absurd.

As a follow up to my previous post, I just wanted to point out, that I can see several reasons why returners aren't as heavily valued as they had been several years prior:

1) As previously mentioned, if their play time goes up (on offence or defense), often time coaches wont "risk" them in the return game.
2) With the recent changes to the kickoff rules, there is significantly more touch-backs than ever before.
3) They tend to be "undersized", small shifty players, so they tend to play the slot WR in 3-wide sets, or 3rd down pass catching back. Thus, on regular offence, they won't get the TD totals of a goal line back, or a 6'5" Outside Wideout. So a "sleeper pick" like Jacoby Jones, just doesn't have the same ceiling as Josh Gordon did last year.
4) It seems like special teams isn't as highly covered by the media... or maybe coaches are just not giving out as much info about their starters?

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
I went with the 4th pick in the draft because I wanted one of the top tier RB's. After that, it was best available for the next three rounds, Which turned out to be RB-WR-WR. Then it's QB-WR-LB-RB-DE-LB, and that's exactly what I did. After that it's just managing the remaining slots and getting backups. I executed just about perfectly.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Doug Martin at 2.11 is a great pick. Jeremy Maclin in the 7th, Eric Berry, and Carson Palmer are also picks I like. The only do over is Prater, because I'm stuck with 2 kickers for awhile.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
IAC drafted right next to me and it felt like we had the exact same gameplan from about the 6th round on. There were a few times he took my guy.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
Not too much surprising - I've been doing this draft for 10 years and it kind of goes the same way, especially after round 4. It did feel like there was more RB value later in the draft than usual - a guy like Jacquizz Rodgers went way late, considering he's a backup to a very fragile RB.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
Not take Prater. That's about it! I really like this team and think it can compete for the title if the injuries are at a minimum. I'm hoping some of my later round guys are as successful as guys I had last year - Rivers, Dansby, and Jennings.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I planned to take Jimmy Graham, so I went with the #7 pick. That worked out. Other than that I generally just go with the flow. If a position is being drafted too heavily I generally draft a different position.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I like Graham obviously. He's as close to a sure thing as you can get from a TE. It's hard not to like Brees. I'm counting on a lot of points from those two. Glad to have Robert Quinn again this season. At 5.07 he needs to repeat what he did last season to make it a good pick though. I was pretty pleased with Welker in the 7th til he got suspended. I don't know which of my 3 rookie WR I like yet (Benjamin, Evans, Latimer). Hopefully by the end of the season I can answer that.

As for do-overs, I felt compelled to get a 2nd RB out of the way, but it's hard to feel confident with Chris Johnson. I could have taken a WR in the 4th and had my choice of guys like Harvin, R White, Fitzgerald, Garcon.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

If I had to choose another team to trade rosters with, I'd probably first consider Kyle's or Fugazi's. I don't know. Looking through all the rosters I tried to find a team with a bunch of great players that blew me away, but we're all in the same boat. There aren't that many game-changing players to go around. I've been generally displeased with my roster, but after taking the time to look through everyone else's I feel better now. I'm not the only Humpty Dumpty on the wall. There's 14 of us!

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

I don't recall any big surprise. I didn't quite understand the run on IDP's - it was a little stronger and more extended through the mid rounds than what I thought made sense. It made a lot of RB/WR available for much longer than what you'd expect.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Ask me in a few weeks.
