Subject: RIFC 2014: Final Recap Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Tue, Dec 23, 2014, 09:32 Congrats to twilson, who survived the RIFC playoffs from the #2 seed, taking the crown with a 4 point win after a strong final Monday night effort from CJ Anderson and Carlos Dunlap. I'll post the final RIFC standings in a moment, and provide links to the results of the three qualifying leagues as well. Meanwhile, if anyone in any of the RIFC leagues has any thoughts on possible rules changes for next year, feel free to post them here while they are still somewhat fresh. | |||||||

Sadly for me, one and done this year. I had a what I felt at the time was a great draft, but very few of my top 10 players performed like I expected them to. Forte: He actually did what I needed him to. Martin: Terrible, terrible pick. I don't what happened to this guy. A Johnson: A worse pick because he played every week and still sucked. T Smith: Okay, but those games when he was absent really killed me. C Newton: Again, Okay, but too many games were mediocre. Maclin: Outstanding. Burfict: Terrible, and then hurt. Jackson (BUF): Good when I didnt play him, and then hurt, and then average when I did. Campbell: Decent. Freeman: Average, hurt, average. Basically my whole team besides Forte or Maclin was either hurt or average, and I didn't get many players for my bench or from FA to make up for it. I bid too little on several players, though I did get Javon Landry who turned out to be a useful replacement for Johnson. In the end, the hurt and average made for a below average team that missed the playoffs. | ||||||

At least you didn't take Matthew Staffer as the 6th QB taken (round 4) - ahead of Wilson, Romo, and even Brady. I suppose that, if you had told me at that time that Detroit would be 11-4, I'd have probably been pretty happy with that pack. But Stafford ended up as QB15. I could've done better with Roethlisberger (round 10) or Tannehill (rnd 13) or Eli Manning (rnd 14). | ||||||

Back to AAA with me. Jimmy Graham wasn't worth a 1st rd pick this year. Taking Brees instead of Leveon Bell was a major error and set up a chain reaction that flushed my team down the toilet. I drafted the great rookie WR's Mike Evans and Kelvin Benjamin in later rounds and still couldn't compete. The stinkage from the Saints was too strong. My RB production must rank among the all-time worst in RIFC history. It looked like Hillman might pull me out of the fire but that didn't last long, with CJ Anderson ultimately carrying many a fantasy team to victory. Congrats Twilson, and the others who qualified for the big league next season. | ||||||

Thanks everyone! It really was a lovely season. In a league with as many talented owners as RIFC, one’s roster is bound to have holes (with the exception of Holt’s superteam last year!). My two biggest were RB depth and the entirety of my WR corps. Linebacker could’ve been a third problem, but I have enough skill in finding replacements that I never felt weak. I was fortunate enough that only the WR void actually managed to hurt me in a meaningful way. C.J. Anderson emerged at the perfect time, right after the ever brittle Ahmad Bradshaw broke his leg and went on IR. I had my share of major injuries and suspensions (AP, Posluszny, Bradshaw), but I was able to find strong replacements for all of them. No one player or aspect of fantasy football led me to victory. I found strong performers throughout the draft, from Bell/Watt/Wilson at 2/3/7 to Dunlap/Bradshaw/Gostkowski/Keenan Robinson in 13/15/18/22. C.J. Anderson became a star from waivers, but I also cobbled together a strong group of LBs and CBs. I guess the biggest strength of my season was a lack of high round busts. Crabtree, Reed, Austin, and Shorts were my only underperforming picks in the first 15 rounds. Everyone else (AP excluded) added value. I also benefitted from an extremely strong finish. After a midseason swoon weeks 9 through 11, my all play record over the final five weeks was 63-2. It doesn't get much better than that! On a personal level, it was particularly satisfying to be led by Russell Wilson and J.J. Watt, two stellar football players with positive attitudes toward the game. Wilson has been a favorite of mine since he entered the league, not to mention a fantasy target. As for Watt, the highlight of my fantasy week was always my first glance at his stat line, which never ceased to amaze. I will be very curious to see where both are drafted in this format next year. It’s a great feeling to finally win the big league! I’ve been playing Rotoguru Invitationals since 2006, and this was my fifth shot in the majors (third in football). No format or group of owners challenges me more, and I have grown so much as an owner due to the extremely high level of competition. Thank you, Guru, for building this community. I just saw this thread and I want to thank Guru for putting this awesome league together and running it! Year in and year out this is my favorite league to partake in. The vast amount of knowledge of mid to low level NFL players that's shown in this league is unparalleled. When looking for "advice" for this league there's never an article I look at for "players to pick up" that aren't already picked 2-3 weeks prior. To recap my year, everyone on my team started with a huge boom and then they were simply above average the rest of the season. My all play record was 10 games better than the second place team through 8 weeks. I was 15-1 and riding pretty high. Finishing 6-6 including the playoffs and having an all play record of 46-45 in weeks 9-15 really shows how average I was at the end of the season. Here's a look at my first 10 picks plus a bonus 2 for my awesome LBer crew. A special hat tip to Brandon Marshall (LB) and Justin Forsett who were waiver pick ups that finished in the top 10 of their posision. 1.10 DeMarco Murray This was a surprise. That's all I need to say about that. 2.05 Peyton Manning I took Peyton to be a top 5 QB week in and week out and provide a constant in my line up. He did that up until the playoffs. I'm not mad at Peyton, I'm just disappointed in the way we finished our season together. 3.05 Reggie Bush Ugh. I had my wife cut him for me in her 8 team league. I couldn't justify cutting him in a 14 team league for fear he came back to beat me, but in hindsight he should have been the first one lost to the waiver wire. Looking at who was picked after him, I should have stolen JJ Watt. 4.05 T.Y. Hilton Outside of Matthew Stafford and Emmanual Sanders I don't think there was a better pick in the 4th-5th round range. 5.10 DeSean Jackson I was pretty happy with the results of this pick. While he was a little boom/bust like he proved to be a solid WR2 for me. 6.05 Eric Decker For WR3 I wasn't too upset with Decker. He could have been a lot better, but I'll take 750 and 4 TDs I suppose? 7.10 Bobby Wagner If you sort by average points scored/week played Wagner was the 4th best LB. Even with 5 weeks missed due to injury he was still a top 30 LB. He'll be welcome back to any RIFC team of mine in the future. 8.05 Danny Woodhead Wasted pick. 9.10 Martellus Bennett For where he was taken (12th TE off the board) he did phenominally for me finished 5th among TEs in scoring. I wish he had kept up his early season pace 10.05 Terrance West He had two good weeks. This was a flyer pick and I guess my lack of RB depth showed by keeping him on the roster. 11.10 Curtis Lofton Possibly my best pick of the draft. A top 10 LB taken in the 11th round is definitly a steal, especially since he was the 17th off the board 13.10 DeMeco Ryans Had he kept his pace of 7.3 ppg he would have ended up the 30 LB in the league. Sucks that he had a season ending injury, but luckily I stashed away the other Brandon Marshall after Nerf dropped him. | ||||||
