0 Subject: RIFC 2015: Draft Discussion

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Sun, Aug 23, 2015, 20:34

Our draft will start on Saturday morning, August 29. I may actually turn it on on Friday evening, in case someone wants to get a jump.

The clock will be eventually be set at 4 hours per pick, with a pause from midnight to 8am ET. The clock will be turned on at the end of the first round, but no later than Monday morning.

In each of the past several years, the RIFC draft has taken 6-8 days. At that pace, we should finished by the end of day Sunday, Sept. 6. Assume that we'll average three rounds per day. Early rounds tend to be a bit slower than the later rounds.

I have made the following offer to the qualifying leagues, each of which plans to start earlier than we do. I'll apply the same standard to this league, although it will have limited impact - since we start as the 3rd preseason games are being played. This adjustment applies only to players injured in preseason week #3.
Since the draft starts prior to games for NFL Preseason Week #3, we'll "protect" a team who drafts a player before his week #3 game and who is injured in that game. If you are in that situation, you'll have 24 hours to make a substitute pick - but only from the player pool still remaining.

So, for example, if Tim Tebow is drafted by Crabby Bills prior to the Eagles game on Aug 29, and Tebow is injured in that game (significantly enough to potentially impact regular season availability), then Crabby Bills can jettison Tebow and substitute any other player who is still in the undrafted pool at the time of the jettison. This, however, must be done by the end of day August 30.

While this obviously isn't complete insurance, it is designed to keep the draft moving during that first weekend. And it's certainly better than being stuck with an eventual free agent to replace an early draft pick. Hopefully, this situation will never come into play.

Here are some guidelines for executing your draft picks.
(These are copied from last year's thread. Please let me know if I have misspecified anything)

1. "My Draft List" - Under the "For Owners" menu (at the top), there is an item called My Draft List. You can think of this as your personal pre-ranking of players if you wish, although it has one important operational impact. If your 4-hour clock expires, then your pick will be automatically selected as the top name on your "My Draft List". Only if that list is empty will your pick be skipped. (More on this in a moment.)

2. "Pre-Draft Pick" list - You access this through "For owners->Draft"
These are the equivalent of the Drafttime.com "queue", with several important distinctions:
There is a separate list/queue for each round, and they do not carry over, and
If there is a name in your queue, that player will be immediately selected when it is your turn to draft. The only way to turn off a round-specific queue is to empty it. Therefore, it is important to keep your queues empty unless you are sure that they should be used. If you expect to want to load & unload your queue frequently (similar to turning it on or off), then you should probably keep a list of players in "My Draft list", as you can quickly pull up that short list to add players to any queue.

Of course, if you have players in "My Draft List", then you are also subject to having those players selected if you should time-out. Typically, that shouldn't be a problem, as timing-out should be a rare occurrence.

If you want to keep players loaded in "My Draft List" and you dont want to risk the top name being selected automatically upon timeout, then I suggest putting a "placeholder" player at the top of your list - preferably someone who is retired, or injured, or clearly not a viable pick. We can come up with specific placeholder options, if needed. If you time-out and a placeholder player is automatically selected for you, then you can have the commish replace that player with a real pick when you are available.

Note that because queued picks are automatically processed, there is no role tantamount to a designated picker. As commissioner, I can enter a pick on anyone’s behalf. Other than that, you – or anyone else with access to your MFL password – will be the only one who can directly enter a pick.

If any of these instructions are unclear, please ask. And if anything is incorrect, please alert!

I note that four teams - fugazi, YWK, twilson, and twolves - have not yet logged into the league site at http://www26.myfantasyleague.com/2015/home/36472#0.

Please don't wait until the draft starts to do this. Make sure you are familiar with how to draft, and that you can successfully log in.

One rule change, and one clarification.

Defensive conversion (2 points): This is a new NFL statistic for 2015. This can be scored by blocking an extra point attempt, or by intercepting a 2-point conversion pass attempt, or by recovering a 2-point conversion fumble, and then returning it all the way to the other end zone. We will score this as 2 fantasy points.

One point safety: This is not technically a new rule, but is made slightly more plausible by virtue of the fact that the defense can now attempt to scored on a conversion attempt. Here is a more extended discussion.

MFL says that it does not know if a one-point safety will still also be scored statistically as a regular safety - for which we award 3 points. So, for now, I"m going to assume that all safeties simply count as three points, regardless of situation.

MFL did add a scoring category for one point safeties, and I selected it to be scored at 3 points. But the intent is simply that all safeties should get three points. If the situation occurs (doubtful) and we discover that my scoring approach results in double counting, I'll need to make a correction at that point.

I've set up the new rules in all of the qualifying leagues as well.

For those of you who will be using your phone for much of the draft, there is a free app called MFL Platinum that should be a much better option than going through the browser interface.

It's apparently available for both android and iPhone.

It seems as though every year we have one or two phone-related draft snafus. This may help alleviate that.

Just for clarification: A 1 point safety is a safety resulting from an extra point / 2 point conversion play? I doubt we'd ever see that, ever, even from the 20 yard line.

It is rare, but has happened in some college games before. For example, on a 2-pt conversion attempt, if a pass is intercepted in the end zone, and the defender then starts to run it back - crossing the goal line - and then runs back into the endzone, where he is tackled.

It used to be that, in the NFL, as soon as the ball was intercepted or a kick was blocked, the play was dead. Now it is still a live play.

Here is a video of a one-point safety from a college bowl game in 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jp4TeP4rw0s&safe=active

RE 8: I used Platinum last season and it worked well. I didn't try to set a queue from it, but I had my cheatsheets in a google doc and from my Android phone I was able to see who was next on my list.

Technology! I'm not old at all (28) but I remember when I would carry around my cheatsheets printed out with a laptop when I was on vacation and desperately try to find free wifi so I could check into the draft.

I felt compelled to study up on that safety thing. There is also a scenario where the kick is blocked, the defender gets the ball, is caught right before the goal line, fumbles, the kicking team player gets the ball, tries to run it back, and is tackled in the opposite end zone. In that scenario, the defending team is awarded 2 points, and in college, 1 point - the only possible way a team may ever have a score of 1. That has actually never happened.

MFL offers alert systems for both email and text messages. If you elect to receive draft status updates via email, you'll get an email every time a pick is made, which also lists all subsequent autopicks. If you get text messages, you'll get notices only for direct picks, but not for any intervening autopicks. (If you elect to receive texts this way, make sure you validate your cell #)

I have also written a draft monitoring program that sends out a simple email and/or text message every time a draft pick is made - regardless of whether it's an autopick or not.

It monitors the draft every 10 minutes. If you would like to receive either an email or a text message (or both) every time any pick is made, please send me an email – and let me know where you would like the message sent. If you want a text message, please tell me the cell number and your cell carrier. Send your request to davehall@rotoguru2.com

When an email is sent, the pick is in the email subject line – so you don’t have to actually open the email to see it.

Throwing it out there now so that people have a little time to think about it:

I'm potentially interested in trading down from 4.02. I would want at minimum a swap of 4th and 5th round picks. An additional upgrade in a later odd-numbered round would make the concept of trading even more compelling. Email me if you want to make an offer.

Now that we are in round 3, rationales are due for round 1 picks. Post in the comment section of the MFL draft page, or in the rationale collection thread

Right now we're on pace to finish on September 7th, but I think the pace will start to pick up as people aren't going to go best available but will set up queues of positions. At least that's what I hope. I'll be flying on the 7th so I'm hoping we're done before then.

We are on a pace very similar to last year through round 8.

Last year, we drafted rounds 9-24 in a span of about 5 days.

Brady's suspension lifted!!!

Bad for me as a Patriots hater, great for me as a fantasy owner. I'm used to players suffering season ending injuries right after I draft them, nice to be on the other side of the news!

I'll be at a UConn football game tonight. With 24 picks before my next one, I'm not going to try to set up a queue - but if we somehow race along, be aware that my pick at 15.14 will probably not happen until late tonight.

What is this weekends clock? Does it change any? or on? Forgot.

I can say, similar to Guru, I'll be at the University of Georgia game Saturday.

Sunday I'll be out on a lake.

Was just curious how I need to plan.

Thanks

Draft is completed. Aussie Diamondbacks has an empty pick at 24.12. This can be filled by a free agent pickup as part of blind bidding, or thereafter.

Blind bidding waivers are now open for post-draft claims. Each team has $100 to spend over the course of the season. Bids will be settled at the usual time - Wednesday evening at 7:30pm. First come first served free agents may be added starting at 10:30pm ET Wednesday night.

Be sure to set your starting lineups for week 1.

I apologize for the delay yesterday. I've been off the internet for just about exactly 24 hours. I thot I had to wait will Wednesday to get a new cord delivered, or go out and buy one myself tomorrow, till I looked more closely and realized that the doohickey at the end of the cord was still stuck in the jack. Once I pulled it out, I could use an old cord.

Sorry.
