0 Subject: RIFC 2018: Getting started

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Wed, Jul 25, 2018, 17:01

I am pleased to announce the 14 teams in the 2018 RIFC league.

Typically, I invite the top 6 teams from the RIFC, the top 3 from each of the AAA leagues, and the winner of the AA playoffs. For purposes of ranking teams in each league, the winner of the playoffs is assigned a rank of #1, and then the playoff seedings are used after that.

That list comprises 13 teams for a 14 team league. So that leaves one more team to select.

Since the winner of the AAA#2 playoffs was the #7 seed, I elected to invite the #3 seed from that league to fill the available slot.

Thus, here is the list of invited managers, all of whom have accepted:
RIFC returnees (6): twolves, Philly Busters, Guru, IAC, Slackjawed Yokel, mmikulka
AAA#1 (3): Fugazi, Russelldl, Swinganamiss
AAA#2 (4): Wiggs, Demaryius Targaryen, youngroman, ywk
AA (1): ttucowboy

Here are the next steps:
1. Discussion of possible rules changes.
2. Discussion of any other issues that should be resolved before the start of the draft.
3. Run the draft position selection process. (probably during the second week of August).
4. Draft (starting around August 26).

In particular, I want feedback on what you all thought about last yearís rule that allowed additional flexibility during only bye weeks (only one RB required for those weeks).

League invites were just sent out from MFL to the new managers. Returning managers should not need to re-register.

When you sign in, please be sure to set up your contact info, including checking off those items that you wish to receive regularly via email. Do that under Owners->Franchise Setup and then select the contact info link.

This was our rule last year regarding the additional flex option for bye weeks:
For the NFL weeks when teams are on bye (weeks 5-11 in the 2017 season), starting rosters may have only one running back. If only one RB is started, then the starting receivers must be either 3 WR and 2 TE, or 4 WR and one TE.
I'd like to revisit that rule, now that we have a season of experience. In particular, here is a simple poll:

A. The "only one RB for bye weeks" rule should be continued in 2018 - for bye weeks only.
B. The rule should be extended to apply to all weeks.
C. The rule should be eliminated, requiring two RB to start in all weeks.

Note that I qualified this as a poll, and not a league vote. I'm looking for feedback, but not a binding vote at this time.

Note that in 2017, bye weeks extended from NFL weeks 5-11 (7 weeks total). For 2018, bye weeks run from NFL weeks 4-12 (9 weeks total). Since our fantasy regular season runs for 13 weeks, only four of those weeks have no scheduled byes.

Last year was my first year doing RIFC in quite some time (over a decade!?!?). With that said, I found the RB flex rule to be very beneficial during the bye week periods. With a league of this size, it would be a tall order to expect teams to field competitive/competent lineups while also adhering to a must start 2 RB rule during the bye week period.

Although Guru is not asking for a formal vote, I'll go ahead and vote A.

I am leaning toward B as what works part of the season should be used for whole season and teams can be more creative in drafting and picking up FA RB and WR as season goes along and injuries occur.

Probable second choice would be C with a possible limit on number of RB that a team can roster.

Agree with Philly Busters....not a fan of extending the rule to "B". I did not mind it, during bye weeks.

I found the new rule beneficial during bye weeks. My preference is A. Not a fan of extending it across the board for non-bye weeks.

As of this point, there is clearly no interest in extending the flex option to all weeks.

Beyond that, there is approximate balance between those who prefer to keep the bye week flexibility, and those who would like to enforce the use of two RB for all weeks.

I've decided to stick with the same approach used last year (A) - you can reduce to one RB with an extra flex receiver for the weeks with byes (weeks 4-12).

I will start the draft position selection round tomorrow (Monday). To do this, I'll generate a random draft order at mfl.com. This order will only be used for the draft selection round. After we have chosen our draft slots, I will reset the order at the host site.

This will generally be an untimed process. However, if we wait more than 24 hours for anyone to select, I reserve the right to skip that person and move ahead. If you know of any time that you will be unavailable, or want to leave me any instructions to pick on your behalf, please send me an email.

Remember that we use the Banzai format. Since you are all veterans with recent success, I'll assume you remember how that works!

Our draft will start on Saturday morning, August 25. I may actually activate it on Friday evening, in case someone wants to get a jump.

The clock will be eventually be set at 4 hours per pick, with a pause from midnight to 8am ET. The clock will be turned on at the end of the first round, but no later than Monday morning.

In each of the past several years, the RIFC draft has taken 6-9 days. At that pace, we should be finished by Labor Day (Sept. 3) or earlier. Assume that we'll average three rounds per day. Early rounds tend to be a bit slower than the later rounds.

Starting last year, I implemented some additional time limits to attempt to coax habitually slow drafters into a better flow. I think it helped. Here is the framework:
We establish a point system. If you timeout (i.e., you donít make your pick before your allotted time expires), you accumulate 2 points.

If you exceed three hours of clock time but donít timeout (the clock will initially be set at 4 hours), you accumulate 1 point.

Points will only be assigned after the first round, which is generally an untimed round anyway.

If you accumulate 2 points in total (either one timeout or two close calls), your clock time is reduced to 3 hours per pick for the remainder of the draft. That means your next timeout would be at 3 hours.

If you accumulate 4 points in total, your clock is shortened to two hours. At 6 points, your clock is shortened to one hour. Thatís the ultimate limit.
Commissioners will need to monitor this, and will have the discretion to defer penalties if they believe the draft is moving OK and the time delays havenít been too aggravating (or if the offending drafter has a good story.) Commissioners will also need to enforce the shorter clocks, since the system wonít be able to handle different time limits for each manager.

Hopefully, by adding some incentives to avoid multiple lengthy delays, the penalties wonít have to be enforced. (I did have to enforce a few times last year.)

Starting in 2015, I made the following offer to all RIFC leagues. This adjustment applies only to players injured in preseason week #3. We'll "protect" a team who drafts a player before his week #3 game and who is injured in that game. If you are in that situation, you'll have a limited time to make a substitute pick - but only from the player pool still remaining.

So, for example, if Tim Tebow is drafted by Team X prior to his game on Aug 25, and Tebow is injured in that game, then Team X can jettison Tebow and substitute any other player who is still in the undrafted pool at the time of the jettison. This, however, must be done by the end of Monday, August 27.

While this obviously isn't complete insurance, it is designed to keep the draft moving during that first weekend. And it's certainly better than being stuck with an eventual free agent to replace an early draft pick. Hopefully, this situation will never come into play.

Draft starts tomorrow.

In preparation, please be sure that you have your automatic alerts set as you want. At a minimum, you will want the system to alert you when it is your turn to pick, but there are other options (like alerting every time a pick is made).

To set this up, go to For Owners=>Franchise Setup.

Click on the "Contact info" link and then check off all of the events you want to be notified of (by email). Be sure to save your settings (at the bottom) when completed.

For text alerts, click on the wireless link and setup your cell number and carrier, as well as the checkbox to send a validation text. Also select the events that you want to be alerted for by text. Make sure to enter your validation code after you receive it, and (of course), save your settings.

We are running at the same pace as the 2016 draft, which ended on Monday.

We are about a half-day behind list year's pace, when pick 6.12 was made on Monday night. Tuesday was a fast morning for picks last year, though, and we are currently almost 2 rounds behind.

Not worried yet. Last year's draft ended on Saturday, and if we run a day or two longer than that, it's manageable.

We are currently at pick 14.05.

Last year, it took 3 full days to complete the draft from 14.05 on.

In 2016, it took 4 full days from this point.

In 2015, we needed just under 4 full days.

So, based on the last few years, we should expect to finish Monday or Tuesday (morning)

We have a RIFC rule in place to deal with this:
If a player is listed at one position when drafted and that position is subsequently changed by the hosting site, the manager drafting that player may elect to retain the original position. In this event, that player will keep the drafted position eligibility until he is dropped or traded, at which time the eligibility will revert to the hosting system's default position.

I set up the waiver processing. We will be using a blind bidding system each week. All unrostered players will be subject to a blind bidding process each Wednesday at 7pm ET. Each team will have $100 to spend on waiver claims over the course of the season. Once waivers have been run each week, players who have cleared waivers will be available first come, first served (at no waiver cost). I realize that, for some of you, this will be your first experience using blind bidding.

Blind bid waivers will take place at three times each week:
Wed at 7pm ET
Thurs at 7:30pm ET
Sun at 8am ET

The Wednesday bidding will be for all unrostered players, just as in past years. The Thursday and Sunday bidding will only be for players dropped during the week. A dropped player will be eligible for the first blind bidding that occurs 24 hours after the time of drop. So, for example, a player dropped during Wednesday blind bidding should be subject to the Thursday night bidding. All other players dropped by 8am Saturday will be subject to the Sunday morning bidding. Any player dropped after 8am Saturday will be locked until the next week.

There will be a three hour lockout period after the Wednesday bidding. The purpose is to allow time to review and correct any potential errors in the blind bid processing. FCFS (first come, first served) free agent pickups begin at 10pm Wednesday, and continue through each player's game time.

For consistency, I set up the post-draft bidding on the same schedule: Wed/Thu/Sun. Hopefully, this will allow people to get comfortable with the sequence of events. It will also give us an opportunity to make sure everything works as expected.

Everyone gets $100 blind bid dollars to start the season. Bids must be made in integer increments. Once the season starts, blind bid ties will be broken in reverse order of standings (win%, then points, then HTH). Prior to week #1, ties are broken based on the reverse of draft selection round order. I have a custom waiver order set with that order. That custom order will be deleted after the first weekend, so that it is not used for any subsequent bid tiebreakers.

Here is the league calendar:http://www60.myfantasyleague.com/2018/options?L=20884&O=123

Please complete your rationales ASAP.

Don't forget to set your starting lineups for week #1. They don't set themselves!

FYI - I'm listening to offers on:

Breida & Morris

I'd rather deal them both, as I think they are more valuable together than apart.

First game. First injury: Keanu Neal. this already looks like it will be a long season for my team.

At least I had the balls to get James Conner early enough. I will look how he performs this week before I decide what I want to do with him.
