RIFC Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

I'll bite first...

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I go into every RIFC draft with a very similar strategy, the only difference typically being what I do with my first few picks. My typical strategy involves trying to take at least one "elite/top 5" player at each IDP position, and to draft at least 2 if not 3 LB's early. I find there to be a lot variance at LB week to week once you get beyond the top 15 or so, so I like to try and get 2-3 at that level. My general strategy is also to wait on both QB and TE, as I feel I can typically find decent value in the mid rounds. Lastly, I like to draft at least 2 stable RB options early, and then take fliers on upside RB's late, using most of my mid round picks building a deep WR corps.

That was my strategy going in, but for the first time in a while I decided to throw all of that out the window this year. It started when I drafted Kelce in the 2nd round. I hadn't targeted him, but when it came to my 2nd round pick I couldn't find a RB or WR that I felt warranted the suggestion, so Kelce it was. Similarly, when my 5th round pick came around, Russell Wilson felt like he was a solid tier above any other option. When looking at the potential difference in points between Wilson and the next QB, compared to a handful of RB/WR options, I thought the pick worthwhile. Lastly, while I succeeded at drafting a top tier DL/S that I liked (Bosa and Adams), I have the weakest LB corps I can remember going into a season. This is partially because of a fat fingered mistake (taking Gallup over Martinez in round 6, had every intention of taking Martinez, but clicked on the wrong player!!!), and partially because of circumstance (the Adrian Peterson released forced me to take Gibson over a more steady LB2). I think there's a chance my LB group works out, but my options are shakier than I typically like to have them.

Lastly, I normally try to avoid the hype surrounding rookies, and let other managers take them earlier than I'm comfortable absorbing the risk. With no offseason this year, I felt even less comfortable taking rookies, yet I ended up with a ton of them. I have two rookie RB's (Taylor and Gibson), three rookie WR's (Ruggs, Jefferson, and Shenault), and two rookie IDP's (Queen and Chinn). I'm going to need at least one of the RB's to end up a top 20 RB, at least one of the WR's to be a WR3 at minimum, and at least useful production out of the IDP's for that gamble to pay off. While I like each player that I took, I don't feel great about having so many of them.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I like most of my early picks, other than Gallup, but I think the picks most likely to out produce their draft slot are Gibson in the 12th, Slayton in the 14th, and Logan Ryan in the 21st. As stated above, I drafted a bunch of rookies, and while I think its unreasonable to expect that they all work out, if at least one for each position group produces I'd be pretty psyched.

The only pick I'd like a do-over on is the Gallup pick. Not taking a top tier LB really set my draft in a direction that I didn't love. It would be one thing if I passed on a LB for a player I loved, but I'm very lukewarm on Gallup. Hopefully my mistake pays off.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Swingandmiss seemed to be the manager that continuously drafted players that I liked (Thomas, Ekeler, McLaurin, Woods, Johonson, etc..) but he waited a long time on QB/TE, and is going to need one of his options there to produce. Other than that, there were picks here and there that I liked (was jealous of), but no one team stands out.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Nothing so much about the draft, but it definitely feels like the lack of a preseason did suppress the injuries a bit. In most seasons it feels like there are 3-5 impact players that are battling injuries going into the year, and there are tough choices to be made about when to draft them. This year, there are a few players battling some nagging things, but nothing that altered the draft board too much. Also, there haven't really been any big names on the COVID list... hoping that continues.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Beating a dead horse here, but not drafting Gallup, and taking Martinez to anchor my LB corps. Had I done that, I think I'd have stayed the course in drafting LB's early and likely would feel a lot better about my IDP corps. If Gallup ends up an every week starter for me, and Gibson runs away with the WAS job, the decisions will have paid off. If not, I'll have some struggles.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
Plan? Strategy? Yeah, I had one and it went straight out the window in round 2. I was set to start RB/RB and getting Edwards-Helaire in round 1 at pick 10 was exactly the start I was hoping for. Round 2 I was targeting Jones(Aaron), Drake or Sanders. Then Jones and Sanders came off the board and I got nervous about Sanders injury. And there were Davante Adams and Julio Jones still on the board with 1 pick left before mine. So, I reset my queue and got Julio Jones. But then when round 3 came around, none of the RBs I really felt good about as my RB2 were left. Mostert will be fine IF he becomes the clear #1 but recent history suggests that might not happen. Anyway, the rest of the draft went pretty well. Might have waited too long on some of the IDPs.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Favorites: Edwards-Helaire(10), DJ Moore(47), Garrett(103), Rodgers(122), Ngakoue(187), Minshew(206), Herndon(234)
Do overs: Cooks(75) - may be injured and several similar options were available there. Barrett(159) - probably should have gone for tackles instead of sacks.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I like Jaydog and, if the starting QBs ball out, Da Bomb(Newton) and twilson(Roethlisberger)

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
Teams taking 3 QBs and 3 TEs, how many QBs went early other than Jackson and Mahomes. All the others in the top 13 are of similar value.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
I'd probably take Sanders in round 2 and get my WR1 in round 3. We'll see how the Jones / Mostert combo works out.
