Congrats to Jaydog, who moved through the playoffs from the #2 seed to post two convincing wins sandwiched around a second-round nail-biter over Philly Busters.

Final RIFC standings are posted here. I'll post links to the qualifying league results in a moment.

It was quite a journey, and there were a few times when it seemed that the NFL season might go completely off the rails. But somehow, they persisted - and so did we. Thanks to all of you who managed to roll with the various punches.

If anyone (in any of the RIFC leagues) wants to post a season recap, or a hard-luck story, or any sort of reflection on the season, feel free.

Congratulations, Jaydog. A most impressive season. If only I'd accepted your trade offer of Herbert for Fitzpatrick.

RIFC is starting to look like a family-and-friendsw league!

Appreciate it Toral, in retrospect I should have held onto Herbert as he was more productive than Russell Wilson down the stretch, although Wilson did outproduce him in week 16.

Here's my short (ha, yeah right...) recap. After the good fantasy fortune I received this year, it's the least that I can do.

As I do every year, I felt really good about my draft but had a few concerns. My biggest concern coming out of the draft was that I mistakenly took Michael Gallup over Blake Martinez in the 6th round. Not only did this stray from my plan of ensuring that I get a top tier LB, but I took a WR that I had no confidence in. While Martinez ended the year as the LB5 in our scoring system, Gallup needed a monster week 16 performance just to get into the WR3 conversation. He only scored 13 total points in my starting lineup (over 3 games) and was dropped at his week 10 bye. While Martinez would have no doubt anchored my LB corps, I ended up fine at that position getting good contributions from Jaylen Smith (who ended up LB7, only two spots below Martinez) in the 7th round, and riding Patrick Queen as a solid LB2 until I was able to hit a few waiver wire home runs with Troy Reeder and Tyrell Adams, both of whom were top 10 LB's in the second half of the season.

The picks I liked the best coming out of the draft were:
  • Antonio Gibson - 12th round: Benefited from the fortunate timing of the Peterson release as my pick was approaching. While he was a RB3 for me in the playoffs (even without the injury), he was in my starting lineup for 8 weeks this season, and helped to overcome Nick Chubb's injury and Jonathan Taylor's slow start.

  • Darius Slayton - 14th round: I thought I was getting a solid WR2/3 with Slayton, and his 22 point week 1 outburst (on my bench) only reaffirmed this excitement. Unfortunately it was all downhill from there, and after a very underwhelming first half to the season (where I started him in almost every week), he rode the pine for me when it really mattered.

  • Logan Ryan - 21st round: This was probably my favorite pick of the entire draft. While he did provide DB2 production for me for most of the season, he was a clear 3rd choice behind Jamal Adams and Jeremy Chinn, and sat the bench for me when the games counted most. He did help quite a bit during a few weeks that Adams and Chinn missed.

One thing that concerned me a bit coming out of the draft was the number of rookies that I drafted. While I normally try to shy away from unproven rookies, this was a year that they seemed especially risky given the lack of a traditional training camp and preseason. That was my strategy going into the draft, but repeatedly when my pick came up, I found myself gravitating towards the very rookies I was trying to avoid. Taking Henry Ruggs in the 10th round ended up a waste. Ruggs only started two weeks for me, and put up a combined 10 points. He was dropped to the waiver wire after week 8. Taking Laviska Shenault with my 24th round pick was exactly the lottery ticket I had planned on, and he ended the year as a borderline WR3/4. I didn't have the patience to stick with him and dropped him after week 12, but he ended up being a solid pick. My 3rd rookie WR, Justin Jefferson ended up being a slam dunk. I drafted him in the 20th round, as the 67th WR off the board and he ended up as the WR6 in our scoring, one spot above my my 4th round selection of his teammate Adam Thielen. I may need to rethink this rookie avoidance in the future as four of my most productive players were first year players (J. Taylor, Gibson, Jefferson, and Chinn).

My final "self-pats" on the back will go to a few other players that FAR outproduced their draft position.
  • Jeremy Chinn drafted in the 17th round (DB18) and ended up the DB3.
  • Jonathan Taylor drafted in the 3rd round (RB21) and ended up the RB4

  • Adam Thielen drafted in the 4th round (WR18) and ended up the WR7

  • Travis Kelce drafted in the 2nd round (TE1) and ended up the TE1! While this should have been expected based on his draft position, if you combine Kelce with the WR's, he would have ended the year as the WR3, only behind Tyreek and DeVonte. I liked where I drafted Kelce, but would have never expected first round value, which I definitely recieved.

As far as negatives...

While I was generally benefited by decent injury luck, I did lose Nick Chubb for a good chunk of the regular season, but a mentioned above could weather the storm with Antonio Gibson. I also lost Marlon Mack in week 1 of the season, although Mack was at best a RB3 for me, and his injury allowed for Jonathan Taylor's eventual rise. Maybe most shockingly, the only position group where I consistently struggled was at DL. I thought I was going to be in good shape there taking Nick Bosa in the 8th round only to see him injured for the season after only two weeks. I also ended up dropping Carlos Dunlap after week 4 when the Bengals lessened his role. He ended up bouncing between three other fantasy teams while putting up the occasional good week w/ Seattle. I snagged Montez Sweat on waivers after Bosa's injury, and he ended up a weekly starter for me as the DL5 in our format. My second DL spot was more of a revolving door but I did stumble into a few decent weeks from the guys that I slotted in there.

So all in all, it was no doubt my best season in the RIFC universe. A very good draft, combined with better than average injury luck, combined with a very productive use of the back half of my draft and the waiver wire produced a good regular season and a fairly comfortable playoff run (other than my semi-final nail biter against Philly Busters. The best thing I did all season was dispatching of Demaryius Targaryen in the first round of the playoffs, avoiding the massive 233 point performance he put up in the fantasy championship week... has a team ever scored 233 in RIFC!?!

To those that are still reading, appreciate the opportunity to put my thoughts down. I find it a useful exercise to document/journal how things went in good years and bad, and this was no doubt a great one!
