Subject: 2022 G20 Preseason Thread
Posted by: R-Money
- [32122023] Mon, May 02, 2022, 18:57
Greetings all. Starting this a month earlier this year. At minimum please respond here or EMAIL me that you will or if you will not be returning.
Plenty of items I wanted to put out in the open as we tread forward to fall. Plenty of potential discussions based on unresolved items and as always.
First - Finances. Mostly a repeat. Balances were posted on the 2021 post. Since then two members were paid out, Broncos -fully and Vikings - Partially. Here are the remaining balances. Email me if you would like a pay out. Bills - 45 Bengals - 75 Cardinals - 5 Browns - 53 Packers - 55 49ers - 40 Jets - 10 Ravens - 45 Seahawks - 30
IF you have a carryover and respond as returning, your balance will be put towards the 2022 dues.
Next up Schedule. Below is the NFL important dates as well as our Tentative dates based off previous years.
NFL Schedule Release: May 12 Pre-season starts: Aug 4th Final Cut day: Aug 30th 4PM Eastern Kickoff: Sept 8th
G20(subject to change) Draft Lottery - ASAP Rule changes for 2022 season finalized - Aug 26th Keepers Due - Aug 27th Dues due and Draft Begins - Aug 28th
Finally - Items of interest In 2021 there were some hot issues that we changed, or considered changing, or at the very least some good ideas may not have gotten fair consideration/vetting. The idea is to not have that happen again or at least to the same extent. Here are some items that I recall from the previous conversations.
Expansion/Contraction - depending on returning teams, possible expansion to former managers?
Roster Size, Starting Roster breakdown - a few ideas tossed around
Scoring changes - IDP happened, could change again?
Playoff format - Rushed vote, other ideas had merit
Payouts/Prizes - Used a "as close to the previous year as possible" model - cannot sustain should convert to Money in = Money out (minus MFL fees) And decide on rewarding the surplus.
Trade Deadline - Hard Rule in the League rules did not account for NFL schedule change, Also Leadership to communicate leading up to as a reminder
Inactivity/tanking - Any issues from last season to discuss? Any thing to put in place this season?
Official Leadership, Official written constitution - Clarification on Voting for changes etc.
Team Names/Locations/display on website - AKA the Fort Worth Rule, aka how closely do we want to require NFL mirroring.
Communication Hub - Move from Rotoguru to another method of league communication?
Feel free to communicate here on how you feel on these items or any other items that you may think need addressed. If you would like to voice your opinion on any matters to me privately, feel free to reach out to me via Email.
Panthers In!
Will post draft order as soon as the lottery is pulled. |

Noted on all 4 items. No objection to 1-3 Agree -and assume a commissioner can maintain commissioner if approved consecutive years - infinite.

Ok - so Barring anything crazy to come in about the above I am considering the first three items done with.
As for Commissioner - I was the only one saying I will do it so I guess thats settled. I do agree with CT/CLEV that the commissioner position should be reviewed every year and its easy enough to bring up every offseason so we can do that to replace, remove, or add commissioner/s
ok, thats that - next post will be an early start on the items for next weeks discussion

Next round of topics...
Item 1 - Changing your franchise name - Should it be allowed? Regulated?
Item 2 - Scoring/Roster changes - Any thoughts, reasons, ideas to improve our current settings. Current settings can be found below:
Scoring
Roster Info
Ill post this on discord as well for discussion, and a reminder, same plan. Talk all week, hopefully get some sense in what we should vote on, and then vote next weekend.

To take some weight off you perhaps someone can step up to form a cabinet.. a Treasurer (for $$$$) and a Secretary (to handle the schedule) would be two huge assists.
I don't think I can handle either with my existing commish duties, but surely someone can step up and take one area focused role.

Ok so the name change - This does not SEEM like an issue any longer BUT because it was one and there were some vocal for it, some vocal against it, some didnt care - its probably best to establish an official standard. I am personally not against it, but I think IF we are ok with name changes they should be reasonable and nonfrequent. If you change your name you should have to stick with it for 3 seasons minimum.
I understand that the long legacy name of the league is the "Gurupie NFL replica league" and if most of you feel that we should fall in line with that and members of the league should adhere to the concept then so be it.
Side note - GNRL (General) might be a better acronym league name than G20... just saying
Scoring + Rosters..
Ideas I would like to see
Scoring Caps should be dropped or at least evened out (50% drop for QB's vs 75% drop for RBS/WRS/TES)
FG point system should be simplified for both misses and makes - we could do .1 per yard made and the inverse for missing up to 70 yards. - we could just do every 10 yards goes up or down a point for makes or misses
We should add Receptions to be .5 pt per reception (Half PPR)
Tackles increase to 1.5 Assists increase to .75 Sacks increase to 6 Interceptions increase to 6 Safety's and all blocked kicks increase to 6
Some bolder ideas:
- QB passing yards decrease from .04/yard(25 yards = 1pt) to .03/yard (appx 30 yards =1pt) for balance
- Starting position TE should be changed to a Flex position RB/WR/TE
- All WR starting positions should be changed to WR/TE
*the previous two essentially make having a TE optional
Change Defensive starters From 1 Dline 2 Linebackers 2 Dbacks 1 FLex TO 1 Dline 1 linebacker 1 Dback 3 Flex

I think teams should mirror real NFL franchises... that was the idea and foundation of the league.
A new GM can come in and run the team but the history of that team remains intact.

We cant have it both ways.
We're talking about mirroring the NFL, yet at the same time discussing eliminating the TE position and we are having significant resistance to a scoring system that makes stud defensive players more important than fringe offensive players?
Come on. There's very little in this league that mirrors the NFL.

Just my two cents.
I'm not in favor of eliminating the TE.
I'm basically ok with the suggested changes to IDP scoring...one of my frustrations with IDP leagues in general has been the unimportance of them in overall scoring, so that might help make them impactful. But I am definitely open to hearing the discussion.
I'm fine with either direction on the team name thing.

To be clear - it doesnt eliminate TE. My math based off last years points using my suggested roster changes still has 13 TE's being viable starters.
Benefits: Roster Flexibility, tighter scoring games, Makes a 2TE strategy viable, Makes a three or four TE strategy possibly viable (ovbiously you would have to monopolize the top guys but its still possible), Slightly Adds more depth (viable starters) to RB and WR.
Downsides: Jack Doyle will never be on a fantasy roster again. But seriously - I am not sure what downsides there are. I guess it hurts the 3-4 teams that have TE1 studs because they will no longer go against... Jack Doyle.
And if we are being picky about mirroring the NFL - Teams are not required to carry a TE in the NFL.

IDP for sure needs a boost. Even with the boost last year, DL's were still mostly useless players. DB's are almost always completely fungible. Only LB have some value, and they are perhaps the least valuable position on a real defense.
FG's are mostly fine. I don't want any scoring change where I can't calculate roughly what the kicker did from looking at the score. (13 points? He got 7.) I'm not sure what it is currently, but in my head, 3 should be given for anything 0-49, 4 for 50+. -1 for a miss inside 40, and -1 for missed extra points.

previously posted suggested scoring for IDPs:
Tackles increase to 1.5 Assists increase to .75 Sacks increase to 6 Interceptions increase to 6 Safety's and all blocked kicks increase to 6
suggested scoring for IDPs that would bring them inline with offensive players and make them viable keepers, which, in turn, would increase the number of keeper-level players available at the draft.
Tackles (Assisted) DL = 1.5, LB = 1, DB = 1.25 Tackles (Solo) DL = 3.25, LB = 1.75, DB = 2.50 Tackles for Loss DL = 3.25, LB = 2.5, DB = 2.75 Blocked Kick / Punt 5 Forced Fumbles 3 Fumble Recovery 5 Interception 5 Safety 10 Defensive TD 6 Passes Defended DL = 3, LB = 4, DB = 5
Interceptions -3 Sacks 4 Fumble Recovery Yards 0.10 Interception Yards 0.10 Sack Yards 0.10 Stuffs 3
a scoring system like this will make many IDPs - across all positions - viable keepers. A top IDP will be like having a top dog at any other position. It will make watching defensive football much more exciting (WG and Pete will definitely attest to this), and again, it will increase the pool of talented players available at draft time, as more defensive players will be kept.

Tackles (Solo) DL = 3.25, LB = 1.75, DB = 2.50
Plus 4 for a sack? Yikes!
Too much for passes defended as well.
All TD by anyone are already 6
All scoring options apply to all player positions,
Stuff? I know what it is but how to find one guy responsible. Is it an official stats. I believe only official stats are used by MFL.
remember we do not have the dst units in here. Only individuals get points…
Just a few observations so far…

Items 1-4 seem like no brainers and seem fine.
I do think the defensive stats might use a "small" tweek so overall defensive totals are a bit higher. However, the current thoughts are way beyond reasonable.

Would rather we do a more modest, but still significant, increase in values (not looking to put IDPs on par with offense)... see how it goes, and then we can always increase more rather than going too far now and having to scale it back (or increase offensive scoring in response, etc.)
I'm also generally supportive of adding more scoring categories to diversify and better reflect on-field performance and game-changing plays, which boosts overall value of IDPs without cranking up the standard per-action scores (esp. tackles).
I'd propose:
Increase +1 Sacks (1->2) +1 Interception (2->3) +1 Fumble Recovery (2->3) +2 Safety (2->4)
New Categories +0.5 Reception +1 TFL (which means sacks are really worth "3 + yardage" since sacks count as TFLs as well) +2 Forced Fumble +0.10 Sack Yards +0.10 Fumble Recovery Yards +0.10 Interception Yards

Ok so, I know Ive been pushing and promising a vote this weekend, but some real life stuff happened this weekend and it drew my focus and also I got some feedback that for various reasons some of the league think its too early to vote on things
This is good feedback, but its only coming from a few people and I think the best thing is to hear back from everyone.
I wanted to do this early and scheduled so it would be transparent and we had plenty of time to get through the thoughts and ideas that we have to get through - as well as some of the ideas that did not get their fair share of conversation time last off season. IDP doesn't seem like its going to be a quick one, but we also have Playoffs, and Dues/Payouts to finalize. Those two may be quick simple things, they may not be. Once the particulars were cleared up there would be nothing left unless someone came with a relevant suggestion that people liked.
I am sending this out on Roto, Email, and discord - please let me know your thoughts:
Should we - push voting back to July 11th - give us more time to talk and layout all the items to vote on in the mean time.
Or should we - move forward as we have been, voting on points and Team name changes ASAP - before moving on to the next item/items.
Note: No response here or minimal response means we will move forward as we have with voting. Ill give it until Wednesday.

Start with easy stuff: Dates (draft, trades, playoffs) Dues Playoffs
Need Much more time to Work on IDP. Needs to be line by line votes. There really is not going to be one package that everyone would agree one.
Can anyone take some game data from last year and apply some of the new ideas? It would take a spreadsheet /database to do it. Needs someone who can scrape data and then apply the new suggested point values/ maybe a range of values to the older data to see the difference it would make.
I do not know how to scrape data to get started…
But you could set columns with different values and see the results with the push of a button. I haven’t worked with SS or do for a while but if someone is proficient at it it shouldn’t take that long to do.
It would take me forever to remember/figure out how to do it. Now if my Dad were still alive, he would jump at the chance to create and play with a database, but he is long gone…
Or Can someone try to “group” them by category: All pass items: defensed, int, int steal and run with it All tackle type items: regular, for loss, sacks, safety Game day roster flexiblity Kicking stats Fumble scoop and run
Defensive yardage: Length (?) of sack - not sure if MFL calculates this Like when Mahomes runs backwards forever and you get him… yeah, right. More likely for Matty Ice…just sayin’ Length of TFL - not sure if MFL calculates this Int return yardage Fumble stuff: yardage if scoop and run with it
One way to do this is to look at all the data that MFL counts and calculates and see what could be applied to IDP…if they don’t calculate, than we don’t need to be concerned about it.
Just some thoughts…

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Ok we will shelf IDP and PPR and any other scoring issues for better discussion time.
Moving on as Judy suggested to some possible quick kill items. All suggestions welcome, if no feedback we stick with the established which are identical or as close to last year as I could get them
Dates: Keepers due Aug. 27th - 10PM Eastern Draft begins Aug 28th - 8Am Eastern - 3 Hour clock with overnight pauses, (can still pick during pauses)
Trade Deadline: Dec 8th, 8 PM ET (Right before the start of the Thursday night Kickoff game for week 14.) (
Playoffs/postseason: Playoffs are a modified eight team tournament held during NFL weeks 15-17 with consolation brackets to also crown 3rd and 5th place. Four teams from each Conference (AFC and NFC) qualify for the playoffs. - Two division winners - Two wild-card teams with best records of all the remaining teams in that conference. It is possible for two wildcards to come from the same division. Playoff seeding: #1 seed = division winner with best record #2 seed = other division winner #3 seed = wildcard team with best record #4 seed = other wildcard team Seeds #1/#4 and Seeds #2/#3 play in week #15, with the winners advancing to meet for their respective conference championship in week #16. Each conference winner will advance to the Super Bowl to be held in week #17. Losers will also continue playing to vie for placement for cash prizes (if app.). i.e. If you lose in round one, the best you can do is 5th place. Additional playoffs: The commissioner will set up additional playoff brackets for Teams 9-16 (Wanna-be Bowl) and teams 17-20 (Toilet Bowl). The result of these will not affect official final placement of 9th-20th place.
Dues/Fees/Payouts/Surplus: This format is to be a typical framework of the money in/money out for the league. Its based off of the awards given in 2021 with percentages used so that if the Money pot changes for any reason, we can still calculate. Dues: 20 Dollars (First year managers/teams can opt out of dues, but will also not be eligible to win prize money that season) Fees: MFL hosting - Commissioner will post every season, effort towards getting the earliest discount. (2022 fee was 80) Payouts: See Discord or Email for Image. Surplus: We currently have a expected surplus in the budget of 419 dollars. Most straight forward solution in my opinion is to use that to cover MFL fees keeping the pot at 400$ each season for several more seasons, however this would need vote or approval. Current expected pot for 2022 is 320$.

Nick Folk is ok on Bills, that add was before the final week 14 deadline.
Can all these players be removed from their teams as we do not have drop ability currently? Would suggest this be done at the end of each season so we don't have to remember to go back and check these every year.

Keepers – DUE SATURDAY AUGUST 27th 10PM ET.
Please have keepers selected in MFL – if you cannot – please send them DIRECTLY to me and I will use those as a proxy.
Please note – you do not have to have Nine keepers. I have seen two separate entries that each had 8 at one point. It is well within the rules to keep less but please double check to be sure that is your intention and not a mistake.
IF YOU DO NOT ENTER IN MFL – I will enter your keepers from discord, roto, or with me directly – which ever is the most recent you submitted.
IF YOU MISS COMPLETELY – it is counted as inactivity. Your keepers will be selected at the commissioners discretion using projected points per game and common sense.
Once keepers are all in and entered I will officially open the draft. The Draft will remain untimed from when I open the draft until Monday morning at 8AM eastern. Basically Sunday – the draft is open, but it is untimed. Starting Monday at 8AM eastern the draft will be timed with a three hour time limit. The Timer will be suspended from 10PM Eastern to 8 AM Eastern – but you can still make picks if you are on the clock.

Just wanted to reach out here to PROMIZE and TWOLVES
You two are the holdouts on joining the discord for chatting and updates and discussion. We also have 'channels' for a live scoreboard, player news updates, and even one for G20 updates like transactions, trades, and draft picks.
I still plan on posting everything essential here as well - but per Gurus retirement we never know if/when the message board will phase out.
Here is a invite link to join - Discord

any guidance that you might need? It's a considerably better format for communication than email or this board.

Sending out a formal notice that The Cincinnati Bengals have been issued a warning for IR Violation. They have also been contacted individually with further details of the decision.
They had RB Brian Robinson in their IR spot for the players games during week 5 and week 6. They rectified this Friday morning after the players week 6 game by promoting them to the main roster. This is a violation of a clause in section 1 of our rules around Rosters.
This decision will remain open for arbitration requests for the next 24 hours.
