Hi,
This post will be promoting a website I've developed. Guru suggested I post here..
I used to hang out here 20 years ago or so. Last year I came up with the idea of building a website following the format that Smallworld created back in the day. The new site follows everything I can remember and find about SW, I think it's close.
I absolutely loved Smallworld/TSN and have missed it since the day it went away. I figure there have to be a few people here who feel the same way?
Anyway, the site is www.salarycapsports.com. It's live now for football, baseball is running but only for testing.
If some of you have an interest in trying it out, I would love any feedback you have. If you want, you can email me at tom.mcclure@salarycapsports.com.
Thanks for reading!

Interesting... have you considered contacting IRA to write strategy articles?

Haha. That brings back memories.
I've actually been thinking about the topic of roster values a lot lately, wondering how much it mattered in football vs. the other sports... seems like one year there was a football team in first place with $55M?
Anyway, I guess everyone here has permanently moved on from this type of game. I misjudged the interest so I will need to hook a whole new generation on the format!

Hi Tom, good to see a new game in this vein. Yes, the cap enthusiasts are long gone here. Hopefully you can get the word out to the right people. I will check the game out for sure

I have joined Salary Cap Sports in Baseball, Hockey and Football.
Latter 2 not active, but Baseball after 2 days is beginning to feel a bit like Smallwood with price movements. Got no clue how scoring is computed.
We should set up a RotoGuru Division for old times sake.

Hi Quandary, Good to see you're going to give it a try. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Taxman, I think you've found the information you were looking for on the scoring? The price movement in baseball is only being driven by the few teams testing it out so it's a little unrealistic, but it's good to hear you saying it has that Smallworld feel.

I hope to check this out and participate for football, I just haven’t quite yet ramped up on football yet… I will probably do so in next few days as drafts kick off, etc.
FWIW cap-based and best ball are my favorite formats, especially when combined… it many seem to do that, but I’ll take cap-based even if not best ball!

I'd certainly be interested in a RotoGuru division.

I do! I'll definitely check this out, but I remember part of the thrill being that we had hacked the site to know which players would increase in value each week -- and almost exactly by how much. :)

I managed to set my roster on my phone.
Two teams set up Team 1, My opening strat is to go NJ into Car for 4 quick games. Team 2 hold Vegas for week 1 and move into another 3 game team. Took Perry/Hall for Chicagos 3. Couldn’t afford Bedard. Personal opinion - prices are set too high for some players.
It’s going to take some time to shake off the rust.

Hey Superfreak -
There was a glitch (self induced) in the site yesterday for about an hour. You found it!
You can normally buy and sell all you want using Chrome.
I'm glad you got your teams created. Nice start!

Hi Tom!
Checking back in after trying your football game. Really excellent work you've done! I'm excited to see a proper revival of this format. All of Smallworld's games were great, for me Smallworld baseball in particular is the most fun I've ever had playing any kind of fantasy sports so I am very much hoping to play that next year!
Now, if you don't mind a bit of feedback on the football. Again, overall I love it.
1) Scoring feels a little bit off. Defenses are kicking butt. QBs are priced highest but not sure they score enough to justify
2) I thought the pricing for drafting the initial team were oppressively high, or, the cap was too low, however you want to look at it. Generally Smallworld had a nice balance where you could buy a few studs and gamble on a few 'scrubs', or go for a more mid-range approach, it was flexible, and you could buy some recognizable names which I think is good for the initial experience, this being when you need to hook people in. Whereas in your game, it was like, OK, I'm buying a team of scrubs. Maybe this was your intent, obviously finding good value, sleepers, etc. is a big part of these type of games; I think I prefer the SmallWorld type of calibration for whatever that's worth.

Hey Quandry -
I personally always liked Smallworld hoops the best, looking forward to that starting next week. I need to carve out some time to get my team right..
Thanks for the feedback, I agree with you on #1 and some of #2.
Regarding DEF and QB, these were the top scorers last year based on the same scoring system:
Patrick Mahomes 4174 Josh Allen 3663 Jalen Hurts 3610 Joe Burrow 3214 Christian McCaffrey 3142 Austin Ekeler 3132 Justin Jefferson 3050 49ers Defense 3015 Josh Jacobs 2998
The lowest DEF avg yards per game against last year was SF at 300 yds per game against, this year CLE is only giving up 200 yds per game and nine teams are giving up less than 300 per game. Wow! That's quite a difference. Maybe things will change over the course of the year, but it seems like something has changed in the NFL...
Regarding the preseason pricing being too high. I had a couple of people tell me that creating a roster was too hard and they stopped playing, so you must be right on some level. The flip side would be making it too easy to create a great team, nullifying the thing that makes this game different, which is needing to increase your team's value. Maybe the game should have prices a little lower and have the weekly price increases be slightly less. That would make it easier to get started but not so easy to quickly have any player you want.
I have a note somewhere that I need to really jack up the prices for baseball this year. I will temper that a bit and try to find the perfect balance. I agree that Smallworld had it right...

Is there a way to see our teams previous weeks totals (individually)? While it won't last, since I have no MNF players, I've somehow scored the 2nd most points this week. Complete fluke, since I haven't followed anyone closely other than the Seahawks for years.

On the Roster page there is a button on the right-hand side for Roster History. I just noticed that the button is not there on the mobile view though, I will add it.

I love the Salary Cap basketball game.
One minor note I’d suggest would be to do a +10 bonus for a triple double. Other than that it’s just as I remembered. Great job and I’m grateful to you for bringing back the nostalgia. It really takes me back to remembering playing this in high school and college!

I thought I had gotten the hoops scoring rules directly from Smallworld, but I guess not. I just found the original scoring and it was like this:
Points +1 Fg Missed -.5 Ft Missed -1 Rebound +1.5 Assist +2.0 Steal +2.5 Block +2.5 Turnover -1 Triple Double +10
What are your thoughts on FG and FT missed? I think the game would be better if I added those along with the +10 for triple double.

Yeah those were the original parameters. It would probably balance things out more with overall SCP totals and reward efficiency more. I don’t think you should implement the change mid season though - but starting in the 2024-25 season sure!

Hey Tom, been enjoying the new game and forgot how much I missed the old Smallworld game after all these years. I was wondering when you were going to add the games for next week that the NBA just scheduled? This in-season tourney is new to all of us and now makes sense why they had a week blocked off initially for all teams. My understanding is all of the games next week are considered regular season games except for the championship game in Vegas. So assuming most Roto leagues will ignore that game, but what about for this game will the teams that make the final still get stats?

Hey Skinneej,
Sorry, just saw your message. My data provider was VERY slow to add the NBA games for this week. I wasn't too happy with them, but it is a new concept...
The championship game statistics will not count. As you mentioned, it's not considered part of the regular season.
Good to hear you're enjoying the game. I always thought Smallworld was better for sports with games every day but this year I'm enjoying football the most for some reason...
