Subject: 2010 RIFC AAA #1 Draft Rationales Posted by: Kyle - Sustainer [052753312] Tue, Aug 24, 2010, 09:29 This thread will be for managers in the 2010 RotoGuru Invitational Football Challenge AAA #1 to provide the rationale for each pick. Here are the ground rules: 1. Only managers in this league should post here. If you want to provide feedback (either from other league managers, or from those not in the league), put it in the discussion thread. (Non-conforming discussion in this thread will be deleted.) 2. Please keep the pick rationales in the same order as the draft. We'll attempt to keep this thread 2 rounds behind the actual draft. With the lag, most comments should not have an impact on the draft in progress. However, if there are aspects of your pick that you feel need to be kept under wraps, feel free to protect that information. In particular, please avoid mentioning the names of any players who are still undrafted at that time of the post. If possible, please post your (2 round lagged) comments at the time you make each pick. If you are not ready to post at that time, then create a "placeholder" so that the next person is able to go ahead in sequence. When your post is ready, simply post it in the draft discussion thread and a moderator can copy it over. For BeastieMikeD Draft Slot #2 Didn't really consider anywhere except #2, #4, or #12. #4 I'd be guaranteed one of the sure thing RB's but ultimately decided that Rice or Turner had a few question marks that AP doesn't have. Plus, I have Rice on my G24 team and as much as I like him I don't like putting all my fantasy eggs in one basket. #12 was slightly interesting because of the banzai format. I ultimately decided that the pick advantage in round 3 isn't that much important for someone that has a hard time gauging talent in rounds 2-6(I feel I'm a much better deep sleeper drafter than a value pick drafter). 1.02 Adrian Peterson, MIN, RB He's a beast and with Favre back I don't see why he won't duplicate last year's numbers. Taylor is gone so presumably Peterson will see a few more reps come his way. He's been prone to fumble but I feel fumbles are more a product of luck especially for someone as strong as Peterson. | ||||||

For Tree 1.04 Ray Rice, RB, Balt This was a no brainer for me, and it's why I opted to pick fourth. To me, Johnson, AP, MJD, and Rice are in the top tier of RBs, and i wanted one of them. Picking fourth ensured that, and I fully expected to end up with Ray Rice, and I did. I am very happy with the selection. | ||||||

For Bags 1.06 Frank Gore, SF, RB Considering I had the 12th pick to choose my draft spot I was pretty happy to still have a spot open in the top half of the draft. I had 6 RBs in my first tier. I wanted to get one of those guys. I figured I would get a chance to draft either Gore or Turner here. Johnson was never an option for me; I just couldn’t draft a WR this early. I’m happy with Gore he has a ridiculously easy schedule and an improved OL from last year. He has never really had a problem getting yards just scoring consistently. I’ll need him to get 12+ TD’s for this pick to be a success. | ||||||

For Kyle 1.07 Steven Jackson, STL, RB I really wanted to pick from that second tier of RBs in the first round and I had Jackson, Turner, and Gore slotted at this pick. I knew one of them would make it to me. If for some reason one of the top 4 guys dropped down to me I would have grabbed them but the #5 guy on my board made it. Jackson had back surgery after suffering a herniated disk in week 15. He’s 27 and not getting younger, and his carries are starting to pile up. On top of that he’s got a rookie QB, an “offensive” line, and very few WRs who would make any other NFL roster. Seems like a good pick huh? Well with no real history of major injuries, and his shown ability to handle a very heavy workload, I have no real concerns for 1200 yards and 8 TDs from him, what seem to be his yearly average. Pencil in a missed game, and I’m very fine with him being my #1 RB. I also expect to see a small but noticeable uptick in his receiving numbers this year with a rookie QB targeting shorter passes, maybe in the 60-70 range? | ||||||

For: Valkyrie I had a choice of 5 or 11 which were just about a toss up in my mind- FootballGuys had 11 rated slightly higher than 5 for a 14 3RR so I took 11 besides which I really didn't want Turner or Gore. 1.11 Rashard Mendenhall, PIT, RB I was surprised Mendenhall fell to me- he was the last of my second tier rb's. I really expected to take a top qb here but couldn't pass up the rb. | ||||||

For: The Beezer With Banzai-style drafting this year, I wanted the slot that benefited the most from the reversal. I seriously considered the #1 slot yet I never like the fact that you can't overachieve with the 1.01 pick. I was hopeful with the RB depth this year to grab 4 top non-RBs and then start stockpiling in round 5. Of course, you can never lock yourself into a strategy, especially in this league. 1.14 Williams, DeAngelo CAR RB So all of my mocks were centered around taking Austin and Megatron with these 2 picks. With 2 picks to go, I expected DeAngelo and Brees to go. I don't often get surprised after so many years of the RIFC, but I was floored when Goatlocker took Austin. I had you pegged for DWill and Matthews, Cliff! With Austin gone, I decided to re-evaluate and take a look at DeAngelo vs 2 wideouts. The more I looked at DW, the more I liked - powerful run offense, proven production, and a high floor (always keeping in mind injuries can take anyone to zero). Plus, if something happens to Stewart, he's got a legit shot at top-3 production. Plus, he has a great last name! | ||||||

For: The Beezer 2.01 Wayne, Reggie IND WR Picking DeAngelo changed things for me a bit. Rather than the high-risk strategy I had been planning, it seemed prudent to pick up a high-floor WR to match the high-floor RB I already had. I could pick up some more safe picks early, then start swinging for the fences in later rounds. Megatron is awesome, yet there's risk if UNDRAFTED struggles to develop as an QB. No such issues with Wayne. Great offense and Reggie is extremely consistent. Although his chances to top the WR board are slim and none, he is a lock for a top-7 WR spot even at 32. He'll fade someday, but I don't think this is the year. | ||||||

I view any rookie rb as a real risk and I think Matthews is a risk esp when LT couldn't run behind SD line last year but he is one of the last solp backs left and is on a good team- I cross my fingers and hope I made a wise choice | ||||||

For: Kyle 2.08 Thomas, Pierre NOS RB This was more of a mistake in my draft queue than a pick I really wanted. I had Ryan Grant, LeSean McCoy and then Pierre Thomas. Well Grant with 3 picks before here and McCoy nearly made it back to me in the 3rd round. It’s really too bad he didn’t. I still like Pierre Thomas here, based on most projections they had him going a little earlier than here, so it’s a “steal”. I think a combined 1300 yards and 10 TDs is reasonable, but I only foresee 900 rushing, so he wasn’t highly coveted as a RB. | ||||||

For: Bags 2.09 Brady, Tom NEP QB Part of my plan in picking 6th was to have a chance at DeSean Jackson for my 2nd pick. He didn’t make it. I thought long and hard about some of the other top WRs along with Benson and finally decided to lock up my QB spot. Brady has a tough schedule but has some great weapons at WR this year. Another year removed from his injury I think he will be back as the top QB in the league. | ||||||

Because of that committee approach to RB, i think that WRs are going to become more and more valuable. Roddy White was someone i had targeted for this round, so i am pleased to basically get the two guys i had hoped/expected to get in the first two rounds. | ||||||

I like that security with a 2nd round receiver. I considered a few RB's like Charles or McCoy but both seem to be running behind weak O Lines which can doom even very talented RB's. Plus both are going to be sharing time. McCoy is small so he could miss out on goal line TD's. | ||||||

With 5 picks to go before me, I had Megatron, Colston, Roddy, Marshall, and Jennings on my list with no WRs anywhere near them. I was sweating it until I saw Benson go off the board the last pick before mine. Jennings is another highly consistent guy. He does have some upside potential in the powerful Packer passing attack, but his floor is solidly in the top 12. If GJ had been picked, I planned to take Gates so needless to say I was very please with the next 13 picks. | ||||||

At any rate I hate Dallas, I hate Romo, but I think he was the last second tier qb left and I am prone to loking to have a top QB. My trade with Art was very fair, 2 upgrades equal to the one I wanted. I would have taken Boldin or Gates if Romo wasn't available when my regular turn came up | ||||||

My queue was set with Jamal Charles, Cedric Benson, LeSean McCoy and Beanie Wells. They all went within 8 picks of mine. Great… I went with Stewbeef because he still has a great o-line, no passing game, and a coach who wants to pound the ball down everyone’s throat. Carolina has a 2-headed monster at RB and Stewart should see his fair share of the carries. His heel injury concerns me, but he can get healthy on the bench and be fine to play when Thomas and or Jackson miss a game later in the season. | ||||||

He is a stud who will catch a ton of passes for NE as long as his knee holds up. I thought about Boldin here but just went with the guy I enjoy watching on Sun. For: The Beezer 4.01 Gates, Antonio SDC TE I LOVE ELITE TEs! Having a player that scores like a good WR in the TE spot is a huge advantage and I never pass up the chance to grab a top guy. Gates is in as ideal a situation as a TE can have. With holdouts, a passing-oriented offense, fantastic skills, and an amazing track record, AG is the consensus #1 TE and I had him scoring equivalent to a top-8 WR. No other person was seriously considered here, although if Schaub had been available I would have taken more time to think (and still picked Gates). If Gates had been picked, I would have taken Patrick Willis. | ||||||

Wow I hate my draft strategy this year… I was really hoping Bolden would fall to here, but that hope was squashed quickly after my 3rd pick. That’s ok, I had the other Steve Smith, Crabtree and Rice to fall back on, and guess what I got the third and riskiest of the 3. If Rice can stay healthy, and that hip doesn’t bother him, then I can get a solid 1200 yards and 8-10 TDs out of him. If not then this is a pick I sent down the toilette. His ADP suggests that he should be a mid 3rd rounder, so getting him a round later than that makes me happy. 8-24 Edit: Upon reading the news today I did this:

I completely forgot about Sproles here. He was the #11 back last year and I see his role being similar with a few less carries. Kinda pissed I let him slip my mind. | ||||||

He should also be active on special teams, which is nice. I thought about Sims-Walker but decided to go for the upside of Knox. | ||||||

For: Kyle 5.07 Nicks, Hakeem NYG WR I really, REALLY like Nicks’ big play ability here. He’s got the ability to be a 10 or 12 TD guy since he’s a big body for the QB to throw to. He also can expand the field with his great speed so he could average 14 yards per catch and get 50 or 55 catches so I’ve penciled in 800 yards for him. His ADP suggests that he should be a mid 4th rounder so I seem to be getting guys a round later than they are going for in most leagues, but that's because they are all going to end up hurt... | ||||||

For: The Beezer 5.14 Bradshaw, Ahmad NYG RB My hopes of a repeat of my 2nd choice falling to my next pick could not survive 26 picks with this quality of competition. With that, I didn't see a burning need to take a QB or IDP, so RB and WR were the thoughts on my mind here. As this pick got closer, I was hopeful that Nicks, Ochocinco, or Barber would slide, but no luck there. Bradshaw is part of an RBBC that is a little muddy. Loads of people much smarter and observant than me are touting him over Jacobs, and that he is a strong threat to finish with RB1 numbers. He's a bit of a risk but I think my first picks have been safe enough that it's time to start taking some educated chances. | ||||||

For: Kyle 6.08 Kolb, Kevin PHI QB I'm going to try out the Quarterback by Committee approach this year. I had Kolb slotted as my QB from the very beginning and figured it'd be the 6th or 7th round that I grab him. His schedule is very favorable, and he gets some really easy pass defense’s during the playoffs, should I get there! He has 2 great WRs who just don’t drop the ball, an awesome young RB who can catch as well as he runs, a big pass catching TE, and a coach who wants to throw the ball a minimum of 100 times a game. All this adds up to a lot of safe throws, a boatload of yards, and a good amount of TDs. It also helps that when they get into redzone they don’t have anyone to run the ball. Having a pro-bowl LT is just icing on the cake for Kolb. Pick 12.08 (Chad Henne) was the QBBC secondary pick for the games that Kolb plays a top flight pass defense. | ||||||

Pretty much every fantasy analyst out there has harped don't draft him. At 7.02 it's far enough down where if he has half a year of production than he was worth it. He's fortunate not to have in younger faster guys behind him so it's unlikely he gets benched. Ultimately, he's a decent bye week filler or matchup fill in. | ||||||

I've always had a knack for picking defensive guys, so when these leagues first started, it was easy to wait until near the end of the draft while loading up on offensive players, then grab a bunch of guys that would still put up great stats. Those days are GONE! I knew I wanted at least 2 stud LBs on my team. While I eventually would need a QB, I thought this was a good time to try to start an LB run. Ruud ranked third on my board and and has been an elite player before, so he was an easy choice. | ||||||

There's the Patrick Willis Tier, the Jon Beason Tier, and then the tier of high performers that are no where near those other 2 guys. My queue was set up for a LB because I knew as soon as Beason went I had 1 round to get a guy from this third tier. My queue was Barrett Ruud (7.14), James Laurinaitis (8.03), DJ Williams (8.01), and Paul Posluszny (8.08), and look at the order that the LBs went! Crazy... Coming out of LB University, Posluszny has put up great numbers the past 2 seasons. Last year's broken arm kept him out of 4 games, but he still registered 91 tackles and created 6 turnovers after the injury. Good enough for me! | ||||||

For: The Beezer 10.01 Tomlinson, LaDanian NYJ RB With Carson off the board (GL, you are killing me this draft!), it seemed prudent to draft my bye week RB since Bradshaw is by no means a lock. LDT was really the only guy that jumped off the board at me. Did you know the Jets had 600 rushing plays last season? Neither did I until I started researching this pick. Even if they drop that to 500 carries, that sounds like a lot of work that Tomlinson can pick up. The history of elite RBs changing teams in their 30s is mostly a sad tale. There's #undrafted#, #undrafted#, and who can forget about #undrafted# playing like a shadow of himself in that hideous uniform? Hopefully LDT will play more like #undrafted# and give me one more good year before the wheels come off. Plus, I plan to send Art's in the Hall photos of LDT every week holding a newspaper until he meets my ransom demands while I twirl my handlebar mustache. | ||||||
