RIFC AAA #1 Draft

RIFC AAA #1 Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
There were a few things I wanted to do during this draft that I was and wasn't able to do. I wanted to try a new strategy of QBBC. I wanted to also do the old style RB-RB-RB.

a. Draft 3 RBs who weren't RBBC type players. I pinpointed S-JAX, LeSean McCoy, and Cedric Benson. I ended up with 1/3 of that, and should have had 2/3s if I had done my queue right or had McCoy made it one more pick. So I'm a little ticked about that... But I like my RBs the more I look at them.

b. I wanted a QBBC and used FootballGuys to rate my team they even picked up on the fact that I have a very favorable schedule for my QBs. I targeted Henne and Kolb and got Henne and Kolb. Done and Done.

c. After I got my 3 RBs I was going to go WR-WR-WR. I had to nab Kolb in the 6th, but that was fine with me. What wasn't fine with me is I have 2/3 of those WRs that might not play until week 10. I had to scramble and pick WRs where I would have prefered to go with IDPs. I also don't like my WRs.

d. I wanted to get a top 5 LB, a top 5 DL and a top 10 DB with upside. I would have prefered Julius Peppers and DJ Williams, but Will Smith and Posluszny are pretty good.

e. I wanted Chris Cooley. I got Chris Cooley.

f. I didn't care about my Def or Kicker, I just wanted to get a D that was decent, and another D that had good matchups when my top D was facing a solid team.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Getting Berrian was huge for me. I love getting Chris Cooley in the 10th round. Being able to sit back and wait to get Henne in the 12th was nice and really helped my strategy, because I thought I'd have to get him the 10th.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I know Beezer and GL are usually good drafters and often have similar strategies to me. Well looking at their teams they are pretty good looking to me. But really there isn't one team out there that looks like they are going to be dominating this league. This could be an interesting year.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
The speed of the draft.
A lot of people with with KRs and PRs earlier than I would have gone, but this league really benefits that type of player.
The speed of the draft.
Also people seemed to really undervalue IDPs this year, or maybe I had a completely different ranking on IDPs this year, but usually my IDPs are snatched up before I want them and that didn't happen.
The speed of the draft.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
I would take LeSean McCoy in the second. I would not take Sidney Rice. I would wait even longer on Vincent Jackson. I'd take IDP a little later because it seems like I could have.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My plan entering the draft was to take WRs, a TE, and a QB in the first 5 rounds and then take RBs in rounds 6-9. That plan lasted 13 picks. So I guess that would be a "NO" on the second question.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I really liked my picks this year and it's hard for me to isolate just a few. I'll call out Bradshaw, Tomlinson, and Mike Thomas as 3 picks that I like the more I look at them.

No do-overs although it would have been nice if I could have somehow worked in a better QB1.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

This is the most even set of teams I've ever seen in an RIFC league. I will call out Yokels as a team that may have the most balance I see in this league. The mix of strengths and weaknesses on all teams will make for a fascinating season. Anyone can win and it will come down to in-season management.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

The speed. We had rounds finish in less than 3 hours.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

I wouldn't change a thing.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

My plan going into the draft was not to draft a defense early. I drafted Pittsburgh way too early last year and figured it's way better to get 2 middle of the road D's and play the match up game then 1 studly D. Other than that I didn't have one.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

Schaub in the 3rd is probably the obvious favorite . I really like most of my receiver picks. Weems in the 22nd is one of my favorites since he returns kicks and punts so if I need a fill in he's a consistent source of points. Mike Bell in the 21st seemed like a steal since he's a backup that could receive goal line carries.

Least favorite was by far Justin Forsett. I'll claim being really hungover and drained from a 8 hour car ride as my excuse. He's probably the worst pick of the draft.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Everybody looks pretty solid. Every round there was a different guy that seemed to be picking all my sleepers right before I picked them. Pretty sure my team is my least favorite in the league.

What surprised you most about the draft?

The speed. I like doing my research as the rounds go by. Didn't really have a chance with this draft. Sounds stupid but this slow draft went way too fast for me.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Would've taken a RB over Colston in the 2nd. Then a WR over Forsett in the 4th. Man, Forsett is going to be like drafting LJ last year. Never going to live it down unless Leon Washington and Julius Jones both get hurt.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
When you draft late you can't really plan you just react to what has been done- I really wasn't planning on going RB,RB but that's what fell to me. I traded up to take what I consider the last second tier QB (for a team I hate) so that is fantasy good- personnally bad- as I like to have a good qb- I think I got better wr's than I expected although maybve not as good IDP's as I usually get. I wish I could have had a plan for this draft but it just seemed to evolve too fast for any plan to stick.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
I like most of my picks even if so many of them are young and relatively unproven. I guess Romo may have been my best pick although definitely not my favorite- Minn defense at #8 might be my favorite
Pretty clearly Carlson at #10 is a pick I'd like to have over.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Rotowire like Slackjaw, Beezer, Tree and Jaydog-
personnally Biestie took a lot of my targets but it really does look like a very balanced season- which will probably come down to injuries and who has the most depth where they happen to need it.

What surprised you most about the draft

How the quality of the managers remains so high after so many years- guys don't slip to you in this league- if you miss your window of opportunity they are gone.I was also surprisd how some of the deeper RB depth lasted so long- Westbrook 21, Lynch #235. The diligence of almost everyone of our drafters.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

When you draft late you don't plan you react- I wasn't in control of any aspect of the draft however 3RR/ Bonzai is so much better the standard snake draft. I am just thankful my beginning handicap is only 2% this year and not the 6% it has been in recent years. Hey guys what is it really like to have a top RB?

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
My Plan was to go RB, RB, WR, TE, WR wait on Qb, Def, and IDP. I thought Brees would be gone by pick 13 and was hoping for Menenhall 13th, changed my thoughts. My first two picks were made my que, which did change things. I won't complain with Brees.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over? Stewart Bradley see my rationale. I also like Demarcus Ware, Breaston, and Visathe. If I could do it over again, I would take Foster over Forte. Huge mistake on my part.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I like Bags and vampire. They both have serveral players I was wanting. I believe a lot of things come down to luck.

4.What surprised you most about the draft? I was surprised how long one teams waited on a qb. I almost picked back to back qb's at one point.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
I would have taken the 2nd pick. I would have taken Foster in the 4th, possibly taken someone different in the 3rd, a WR instead of Clark.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
Only real plan was to take Patrick Willis in the 5th round.
Well, that didn't last long.
Since I stopped going RB, RB, RB, I try to take the best available other then doubling or tripling up until I am ready.
It has already been said, but will repeat that with the speed of the draft was really impossible to stick with anything.
By the time I figure out my preferred use of the queue function, was very late in the draft.
Have a better feel of how to prepare in the future.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Hawthorne, David SEA LB - Wasn't quite sure where I was going with this pick, but with one of the top LBs on my board still available, and the 3 flex slots which I feel should be filled with LBs whenever possible, this really did become a no brainer.
Only time will tell, but never would have thought I'd get a Tier 1 LB with the 180th pick.

Legedu Naanee at 16.03 was a nice pick in my mind.
Only time will tell, but for now I'm happy.

Gregg, Kelly BAL DL
In hindsight, I hate this pick.
DLs just don't bring a lot to the table in our scoring format, and I just don't know why I didn't wait.
Part of the fall-out of using queues in this format and setting up positions for each round I guess.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
s_R, JSeth333, The Beezer, Valkyrie. And not surprised at all by that.
Of course, been playing with most of these guys for a very long time.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
The speed. The inability to get in at work just made this a very different draft for me.
I did learn some things though and have a good list of notes of what I will do different next time.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
Seeing what I've seen so far this pre-season, not sure I would take Miles Austin at 12 again. Only time will tell, and hopefully the Cowboy offense comes to life (and I hate the Cowboys, so that's a tough one for me to talk to).
Otherwise, I'm fairly happy.
Not sure I like all of the risk I took, but again, only time will tell.

What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
With a late choice of draft slot, I planned on starting off with a qb – did not realize I would have the choice of Brees or Rodgers at 10 which continues to haunt me as I am still going back and forth on which one I should have taken. Then planned on getting some RB’s and WR’s which I was able to accomplish. I usually wait on IDP’s but did take Jared Allen relatively early.

What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Was hesitant to pull the trigger on Foster so early but that one appears to be looking good. I think I took too many RB’s with playing time concerns and WR’s with largely just upside potential. Going to need things to break right.

Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Have been playing and beating many of you for several years now - ahhh just kidding– many a good manager in this league. After every draft I always like every other team better than my own.

What surprised you most about the draft
The speed no doubt. I was also continually surprised and disappointed that people kept taking my preferred players just before it was my turn – spiller 2 picks prior; Harrison 2 picks prior; Thomas Jones 1 pick prior; Tuck and Barnett 2 and 3 picks prior, etc. Some nerve.

If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
Use my co-commissioner power to rig the draft slot selection process better.

Good luck to all. As a co-commish, please let me know if you have any issues, questions, etc. and perhaps I will see what I can do.

Are there still several DFW metroplex folks out of this group? Fort Worth here.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Mentioned my early strategy in my rationales. Was expecting a RB in the first and would go from there. Almost immediately regretted selecting position #9 as I was less and less sure a RB I wanted would be there. Decided Moss would be most likely and then I would go from there. Pretty much nothing I planned/hoped wounded up happening. Many times I was thinking "if he's there next, I'll take him", and he inevitably wasn't. Not thrilled w/ my team, but I guess I'm not alone.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
I tried to make the best of what wasn't working. I'm hopeful of the upside of my top 3, but many of my picks should be consistent but unspectacular. I am deep at RB, but have no studs. I waited (maybe too long) on IDP, so that's a concern. My 3rd WR could be a guessing game (if I'm lucky one of them will be startable).

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
Everybody has strengths, everybody has weaknesses. Haven't had a whole lot of time to analyze, but at first glance sr, Yokel, and Da Bomb look good to me.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?
I tend to analyze (and over-analyze) every single pick which was hard. I was surprised how (seemingly) easily most were to use queues. My apologies for not being able to do the same.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
I'm never uber-excited with my draft results. Things never look as good on paper as they did while I went along. There were a variety of minor mis-steps that could've changed things completely.
