0 Subject: rotoguru guys mock draft debacle

OK gang...I'm open to alternatives. Way I see it we have three basic choices..

1) Live with nfl.com as best we can
2) use nfl.com but mandate html
3) use a seperate chatroom and track the draft on our own

Opinions?

Once I switched to HTML, it never crashed on me. Keeping Java open I was able to queue player and do what ever check I needed. Ranking players by position, team etc... I think HTML will work for all.

sarge - check your email

There is another option that could work well.
That would be to start a thread here in the Standings forum and do the draft here.
We did that with several different baseball leagues and it works pretty good.
After 8 rounds, we can start a second thread.

I'm pretty well game for anything, just as long as I know ahead of time, so that I know how to set up.

My vote - Yes in that order, but we should already have the html ver. already called up as a backup to Java. Like I said in the mock draft room, I was able to use Java and html at the same time. I just wasn't getting an updated version of the draft as it was going, in Java.

I'm here...in and out.

I have no problem with doing it right here.
we can all pull a list of players by position from nfl.com, print it locally and track the drafts as they are made. then I'll enter the final rosters.

Does that work for everyone? If so, we can do that.

OK...option 4 then, is to draft here.

votes are being taken:

1: Live with nfl.com as best we can and hobble through the draft
2: Use nfl.com but EVERYONE uses html
3: A seperate chatroom to draft
4: Draft here in rotoguru (where we KNOW its stable!) *S*

votes will be taken until 9 pm tomorrow Fri the 31st. (central time) then we'll do as the majority requested. (I'll also post an email to everyone with this thread as an imbedded link.)

If we do it here, just need to set a timer somehow so the draft doen't take 2 or 3 days.

use the time stamp on our posts. we all meet here, instead of in nfl.com. if you're pick takes more than the alotted 3 minutes...it doesnt count, the player is still available, and you wait until you're next turn and take 2 at that time.

Obviously, I didn't like the 3 minute rule in the draft room were everything was kept up to date. Then I will NOT like the 3 minute rule in the manual draft.

understood Chall, but even at 3 minutes, with 16 players each,, and 12 teams, that makes 192 drafts. at 3minutes per, that could mean 576 minutes. (Starting at 7 pm Friday, that would put us done at 4:36 in the a.m. on saturday)

I'll put together an email and send it to everyone in the morning. maybe we could start the draft earlier and do it here, take 3 or 4 days in total and still be done by saturday the 8th so I can enter the teams sat night and you guys and allocate your starting rosters for sundays game then on sunday morning.

Actually it was 5 minutes and it will be alot harder by doing posts. You will have to have a list that you are crossing people off of just to know is has been already taken. Trying to go through all the posts will be difficult.

Actually the html crashed on me right at the end too. I assumed it was because Sarge had closed it down or something. The message display area and the draft pick areas wouldn't display.

As long as I'm the best team in February, I don't care how we pick.
:-)

Actually, can I keep my team that I picked tonight?

Dunn, George, Harrison, Warner...

I like #4.
We can make it work.
The key is at the end of the first round to do a clean up post showing the whole round and then just add to it each round.
We can start on Tues or Weds evening and punch through it to get it done by Fri eve.

hmmm I'd have Moss/McNabb/J Anderson/M Bennet.....some validity to that notion...lol

I know, I said I was done for the night, so sue me. *S*

We could even start the draft here this weekend. Do rounds 1-3 Sat, rd4 on Sund and 5 on Monday. That would leave all day Tues for rd6, Wed for rd7, Thurs rd 8, Fri night rds 9-12 and Sat rds 13-16

I don't think anyone wants to spend 5 days on the draft. I certainly don't...let's do it all at once...no way to enforce any kind of time limit or set up autodraft that way. I think the nfl.com site will work fine. The java draft was working fine for me until people started making goofy/obscure picks that eventually showed up as "unlisted players". Like we were going to find out some hidden secret strategy if you picked real players. It would seem the player lists are different between the java and html versions of the draft room. I loved the format and functionality of the java draft room while it was working. I say we do it Friday as planned and try NFL.com. If it doesn't work we can always move over here to rotoguru.

Philly, I set up my queue from Java and drafted from Java and got "unlisted player". There are a lot of sleeper picks at the end of the draft that certainly won't be household names. How do we know which playes will be "unlisted" and which will be OK? After I realized the site crashed (clock was still ticking so it looked like it was working) it took a long time to get back in. I am willing to give NFL.com a chance if most people want to do that, but I have serious reservations as to its reliability.

Hey folks,
Turns out my place of employment had scheduled network maintainence at 8pm, so I was cut off in midstream...

I'm torn between the ease of NFL.com and the security of doing it right here. Personally, I really wasn't into the HTML version (but only because i had used the java version first). Also, I think doing the draft here allows for a lot more flexibility for those of us that will likely be wrastling children and football decisions at the same time, or have slightly tougher times getting our acts together. The key is to have everyone together.

I so despise evil autodrafts...

I vote for the flexibility of using the message board, but I bow to the majority opinion.

Philly Busters,
The problem you mention was not that the names were obscure. We're talking about a computerized system. None of the names are more obscure than any others to the computer. Rather, there was obviously some type of problem with the application we were using to do the draft.

I think that persistant technical difficulties will be a major drag to the draft.

Maybe we should have a mock draft here to see if we think it'll work?

I agree that there is a problem with their system. I just think it relates to different player lists on java vs. html. I think we'll have a tough time getting people together multiple times to be able to post picks. Also, 2 minutes should be plenty if we use nfl.com. We ought to have sarge contact them with the issues we experienced and see if they have an explanation. The java interface was sweet. Draft and chat all on one screen. Anyway people want to do it is fine with me but I'm not available Tuesday night and part of Wed night.

If we do use nfl.com I'm in favor of still using 3 minutes. 5 as in the practice round was too long, but 3 gives you some time to think a little bit or to recover from a crash. If we do use nfl.com I'm going to do the draft from work where I have a fast connection and 2 computers. I don't like the odds when I start combining a dial up modem, AOL, and then NFL.com on top of that.

sorry promize...its NEXT Fri the 7th...you're right. Just sent another group email correcting that.

and yes, its true I build pc's, however building pc's and working in the registry are two VERY different animals. lol I do NOT mess with registry entries. Tried that once on an older system I almost never used, figured it would be a good way to learn...yea right, took 3 weeks or so to get the damn thing back up and running. Wanted to do so w/o reformatting and I had gone in and just 'garbled' up the registry...what a disaster! NEVER tried that again. lmao)

Promise, I would also suggest you use IE ver 5.5 or Netscape ver 4.7 for the Java. Netscape 6.0 had some difficulties running Java for me. Haven't messed with 6.1 yet. As far as IE ver 6.0 or whatever the ver. is, I heard it's just the beta version that's out. Actually have a friend trying it for his company and so far he hasn't had a problem, but he hasn't tried to use any Java programs yet. Just a suggestion!

Good Luck!

btw - I had some memory issues so I threw in a couple of sticks of memory and hopefully that will solve some issues I had but didn't mention. So far so good, well sorta. 1 stick is not using it's full memory, wrong type. But part of it's available so I use it until I can return it in late Sept. I bought it at a monthly 'puter show.

Adios

I'm on IE 5.5, all the updates etc etc etc, and I have NEVER had a platform that would run a java chat with any stability. No clue why, no MB/CPU/OS combination has ever demonstrated reliable run times. I have no knowledge of Netscape stability, but I know JAVA doent work for spit on MY IE5.5

Well,
I've reformated and all my computer... And downloaded IE6

So far no registry problems.

Only real problems having are IE seems to freeze occasionally... And in the past, on the Rotoguru message boards under Name: It would keep Promize there all the time... Now I gotta retype it in all the time before posting.

12th??!!?? Looks like I'll be stuck with Priest Holmes and Quincy Carter as my top 2.

Just to verify...the first 8 rounds have to fill the starting positions on the roster,
correct? Meaning after 8 rounds, everyone will have 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 D.
Then the next 8 rounds are pick any position you want. Do I have that right?

not at all philly. You can draft in whatever order/sequence you want to as for filling your 16 man team. 8 will be starters is all. Once we do our draft, then the captains will have to go back into nfl.com and set your starting rosters. I have given the deadline, of having this done NOT LATER THAN 5 minutes prior to K-O for the 1st game. (Of the optiona nfl.com presents, this gave the managers the latest 'freeze' time.)
