Subject: 2013 RIFC AA Draft Recaps

AA Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

Well, this league and draft involve a lot of firsts for me. First IDP league, first bonzai format, first draft slot selection option, first time with more than 12 teams, first slow draft. Loving it all so far.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Waned to take advantage of the bonsai format to build the core offense early. When it was my turn to pick a slot, only #13 was taken form among the late picks. With only 10 RBs worthy of RB1 IMO, I passed on #14, took #12 and hoped 2 non-RBs would go before my pick. Knew CJ would, and hoped for 1 more. Brees went #4 so I was set. Richardson was the last of my 1o left and I'm thrilled to have him as my RB1. Plan was to go RB/RB/WR/WR and assess how things were going. Things played out as planned. Waited to see when other teams started on IDP and joined the party. Very happy with the results.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

My favorites seemed to be the ones that fell into my lap and were easy picks. Richardson at 1.12 and Marshall at 3.3 stand out. Tulloch at 22.3 and Streater at 23.12 were sweet too. No specific picks I can point to changing but probably should have build WR depth earlier and gotten my BU QB sooner.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Mine rocks! All the others seem to have holes. But it all has to play out as expected and players got to play and stay healthy. Like Jaydog and astade to battle it out for 2nd place! :)

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

QBs going so early and the quality of offensive players available mid to late due to the IDP picks in the middle rounds. Wasn't sure what to expect.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

As mentioned above, might go for more WR depth and a BU QB during the IDP rounds if I had it to do over. For the most part feel like I'm solid across the board and just need health and expected production. Don't need guys to go beyond what they've shown in the past they can do.

Can't wait for the real games to begin and I can see these guys in action. Anxious to see how the IDP scoring plays out.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Picking at the back half of the draft I was hoping to land a RB1 and RB2 with my first two picks. Ideally, I was targeting two of Matt Forte, Chris Johnson, and Steven Jackson). Luckily all three of them were available and I went with Forte and Johnson. I planned on WR/WR with my next two picks, unless one of the top QB's (Brees/Rodgers). They didn't, so I went with my initial strategy. From there, my only other strategy was to try and lock up two of the top tier DE's, since consistency is very hard to find at that position and the other IDP positions are much deeper. I was very happy to get JPP and Jared Allen in rounds 9/10. I can't ever remember a draft when my strategies all fell into place like they did for this one. Who knows if that translates into success, we'll see...

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I think Russell Wilson is tremendous value as the 12th QB off of the board. I wasn't expecting 11 QB's to go before the 6th round, but I think Wilson is a much better option than those left.

I loved that I was able to get two elite DE's in rounds 9/10. Looking at the other RIFC drafts, the top tier of DE's were going much earlier than that.

Lastly, I think Nick Roach (LB - Oak) could end up being a steal in the 20th round. A 3 down LB, on a terrible team, has the potential to put up huge tackle numbers. I could see him being a top 15 LB, certainly worthy of a 20th round pick (38th LB off the board).

At this point, there aren't any picks I'd give back (except for Andre Brown as my RB3). Hurts to have a player out to injury before the season starts. Assuming Forte and CJ2K are healthy, there's no reason I would have needed A. Brown other than bye week fill ins, but he would have been nice insurance.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

It's funny, the team I like the best (other than me) is the team that followed the exact same draft strategy! PhillyBusters went RB/RB/WR/WR/QB/TE/RB/WR/DE. We didn't differ on position until the 10th round.... CRAZY!.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

The only thing that really suprised me in the draft was how early all of the kickers went! By the end of round 20, there were already 5 kickers off the board!

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Tough to say this early in the season. My draft seemed to follow my intended strategy pretty well. There were several players that I targeted (Tavon Austin, Corderrelle Patterson, Kiko Alonso, Jonathan Cyphren, Leodis McKelvin, DeAngelo Williams, etc...) that I wasn't able to draft, but that was more because I think they went earlier than I was prepared to pick them than because I didn't have a chance at them. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't used a 6th round pick on Andre Brown, but knowing what I knew at the time, I thought the value and upside was there and I'd do it again.

1. Draft Plan

I got the last position choice and now understand why. Never having done this type of draft or game with IDP involved, thought probably offense goes first and then find defense.

First time playing Guru game, I had no preconceived ideas about the first few rounds although from reading from past years it sounded like RB needed to be found early.

I thought in first 4 rounds 2 RB, WR and QB. I never did find second running back early as the relative value did not seem seem to be there but may have underestimated their value.

2. Favorite picks
Happy to get Brady in ninth in third round. I like my defensive players although may have picked them a round or two too early..

3. Other teams:
I like Jaydog, Bean's and PhillyBuster and Astate's offensive team.

4. Surprise

All the running backs going before I thought they would.

5. What would do differently?

I think I would have taken RB in first round instead of Calvin Johnson but now am hoping he is the JJ Watt of receivers. I decided to go after top defensive players early since they seemed to be the best value but not having played this game(or IDP) before not sure it makes that much difference after looking at stats unless it is a JJ Watt. I would have looked at "player stats" earlier as discovered those only very late in draft and what projections were for various players.

I also probably need to find a place to look at kick return stats and tackle for loss stats which I suspect may be important to one's weekly score.

1. Draft Plan
First of all, given the banzai format, I wanted to draft as late as possible. That turned out to be pick #9. I also wanted to make sure I got enough solid RBs and an elite QB: despite the large number of quality QBs this year, the difference between Rodgers/Brees and Luck/Romo is still massive.

I figured I could wait a little longer for WRs poach a bunch of players with kick/punt return jobs, and see which ones stick. Having very little IDP experience, I wanted to take position players ahead of defense for the most part: once I did start taking them, I tried to get players with high upside (even if they were suspended or coming off a bad year).

2. Favorite picks
I like Aaron Rodgers (2/20th) overall, and Zach Sudfeld (14/188th). At least one of my late WR picks will look great in retrospect (and at least one will have been a wasted pick).

3. Other teams:
I like Jaydog's team - he chose a lot of players I like and a bunch of them have high upside. I think Toral's team is the strongest, though, if his players can stay healthy.

4. Surprise
No matter what league it is, a kicker or two always seems to be drafted well in advance of the final round: in this case, it was well over 100 picks in advance. No matter how many times it happens, that always surprises me.

5. What would do differently?
Most of the draft was over by the time I realized I could view players' fantasy point totals from previous years. That would have probably helped me choose players better (especially defensive players). I also think I took Edelman earlier than necessary, though it could pay off big time.
