Welcome everyone. I think we have a stellar group of managers for this season. We have two women in the group, a mother-son competition as well as the "usual suspects" that show up in my leagues! It should be lots of fun.
We will use this thread for the preseason stuff that needs to get done and to address any pre draft/draft issues.
A rationale thread will be set up for later. We will do them in groups of five as the draft progresses. |

Thanks to everyone for signing in to MFL.
The next order of business is to pick your draft order picking slot. I will ask guru to do the random number thing.
I set the manager order by the list in the standings part of the MFL home page (note: I will be re-organizing that shortly -- I don't like brown things...)
1. Swing and a miss 2. Donkey hunters 3. Ghostwood 4. Jaydog 5. Goat locker 6. Loki 7. Louky 8. s_R 9. Russelldl 10. WG 11. mjd 12. Valkyrie 13. Youngroman 14. Crabby bills
I believe it is a regular serpentine draft, but I will check.

No - we use Bonzai for football. Remember that this is regular serpentine except for round 3, which is the same as round 2 & 4. So the team picking #1 overall picks last in rounds 2, 3, and 4.

Ah, a change to the random number thingie. MFL has a random draft generator which we will use to set the picking order. After we pick our slots, I'll fix the draft itself. As noted above (3), it is 1-N, N-1, N-1, N-1, 1-N, N-1 etc. third round reversed.
I will run the random draft generator and post picking order sometime today -- gotta go out now for a bit...

Here is the order for draft slot picking generated by MFL. It's on the site as the draft order -- don't panic, I will change it.
You know the drill: pick your slot, add your name next to the number, delete your name from the top and copy/paste into next thread slot.

And we are done. I will input sometime today.
Next up will be to decide the draft start date. Different for this year is that Labor Day is Sept 1, so we really need to be finished by Friday, August 29. It takes about 8 days if folks use the MFL queue system. I use an untimed draft.

Thoughts? RIFC is proposing this:
Here are my suggest rules changes for 2014. Changes from last year are in blue font. I don't believe these will be controversial, and do not plan to put these to a vote. However, if anyone wants to object to anything - or suggest a tweak - please speak up.
Priority Claiming All free agents (any players not on a current roster) are subject to a weekly claiming process at 7:30pm ET on Wednesday, using a blind bidding process. Each team will be allocated a budget for the regular season of $100, with a minimum bid of $1. Ties will be broken in favor of the current standings (with applicable tiebreakers), worst-to-first. For 2014, blind bidding will use the conditional setup at MFL.
Starting at 10:30pm ET on each Wednesday, all free agents may be picked up by any team "first come, first served" Dropped players will not be subject to a one day waiver period.
During the postseason (weeks 14-16), the waiver schedule will be pushed back to Thursday so that any stats corrections (which might conceivably impact playoff results from the prior weekend) can be processed. For surviving teams in the championship bracket, blind bidding will take place at 3pm ET on Thursday, with free agents released for FCFS pickup at 6pm ET.
Immediately following the draft, undrafted players will be subject to a priority claiming process (blind bidding), with tiebreaking priorities equal to the reverse of the draft selection order (i.e, the order in which team selected their draft sequence.)
Injured Reserve Each team will have one slot available for injured reserve. A player may only be placed on injured reserve when he is so designated by the NFL and the hosting site reflects that IR status.
If a manager adds a player who is already designated as IR at the time of his pickup (either through priority claiming or free agent pickup), that team must keep the player on its active roster until the following week. Players who are already designated as IR when drafted are not subject to this limitation, and may be placed in the IR slot immediately after the draft.
Once an IR player has returned to active status by the NFL, that player must be removed from the IR slot no later than the Wednesday following his activation. If an ineligible player remains in an IR slot after this time, the commissioner may forcibly drop such player after a 24-hour notice (via email) to the manager.
A few comments:
The shift to later times for blind bidding and free agent adds is to allow more managers to be available to (1) review the bidding results ASAP and (2) make free agent pickups. I preserved the 3-hour gap.
The IR rule is fairly straightforward. It may be that the prohibition against picking up and immediately putting a player on IR is unnecessary, but I thought it was still a good idea. While an active player would typically have to be dropped when an IR player is added, there would have been no reason that the injured player couldn't be immediately placed on IR and then the dropped player could be immediately added back to the roster.

Thanks GL for checking draft order.
I'll open draft untimed on Thursday probably in the afternoon. This will allow you to set queues -- I think. If you are ready to pick, go ahead. The "real" draft would start -- how does Friday work?
I generally trust folks enough to run an untimed draft...but reserve the right to add a timer which will most likely be 4 hours.
If you are gonna be late with a pick, post here when we can expect your next pick...

Only five of us are receiving notice of each pick as it is made. This is a great tool that you can configure in MFL. It keeps you up to date on your cheat sheets as you sadly cross off your picks as they are "taken" from you!!
You can find it under owners --> franchise --> Customize --> the check boxes.

Getting ready to head for work. Have a queue in for Rounds 4 & 5. Really want to see where things are at to know where to go for 6.
Should be home by about 5 West Coast time. Really don't want to hold this up, but don't want to put 43 player queue in.
Queue at Round 5 is targeted, and hopefully won't run out.

it seems that MFL changed the position for at least 1 player in the last week. I thought of taking this DL with my next pick only to discover that he is now listed at LB although he is planned to play nearly all snaps as a DL. damn.
you better look at your DL/LB players to see if they are still listed at the position you drafted them for, especially if MFL had them listed wrong or if they will see snaps at both positions.

according to MFL the change was made today when the affected player was already in my queue. good that I noticed the change and removed him before it is my turn again. a total of 3 position eligibilities were changed from DL to LB. I believe the other 2 players are unlikely to get drafted.

You would think so. This is what I found:

Found this also:
IR (designated for return) Since 2012, teams are allowed to place one player on injured reserve that they can bring back to the active roster during the season. The player is not allowed to practice until after Week 6, and can only be activated to play after Week 8. If the designation is made during the season, the player cannot practice for six weeks and cannot be activated for eight weeks. During this time, the player doesn't count against the 53-man roster limit, but he does count against the cap.
And then this Specifc example:
DeMarcus Lawrence is also bit of a tricky case for the Cowboys. If they want to place him on IR designated for return, they'll have to wait until September 2 to do so.That means they'll have to carry him on their 53-man roster through final roster cuts on August 30, thus taking up a spot on their 53-man roster that will be unavailable for one of their down-roster guys. Also, with the IR/return designation, Lawrence wouldn't be eligible to return until after Week 8, which would put him on the extreme outer edge of his estimated 8-12 week recovery time.
So it looks like it won't happen until sept 2?

after searching through the web it seems that the earliest time a player can be put on IR designated for return is Tuesday 4pm ET, which means that I will check MFL on Wednesday if Bowman is on IR and get a kicker then.

damn. September 2 passed and Bowman was not put on IR. he is only on PUP and won't go to IR. tough decision for me. do I cut him to get a kicker or do I cut a different player and have 1 roster spot less for at least half of the season.
is anyone brave enough to trade for him?

RIFC AAA #2 2014 Draft Recap
1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?
Picks 2,3,4,7 and 8 were left when it was my time to pick a draft position. I would have taken #1 if it was available so that I could pick LeSean McCoy. Since it was taken, I chose #4 with the intention of drafting Peterson, Charles or Johnson. As it turned out, Donkey Hunters drafted Peterson at #1, so I would have been able to take McCoy, but I was happy to be able to draft Johnson. My general strategy was to choose the best player available through rounds 4-5, and then fill positional needs. For the most part I was able to utilize this strategy.
2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?
Favorite picks: Arian Foster-Foster was the 25th pick in our draft because of his injury history. Otherwise he would have gone in the 1st round. Calvin Johnson-He can always have a big game. I just wish he was not playing the Giants in week one. My running backs-My team has good depth here.
Least favorite pick: Robert Griffin, III-Essentially a waste of 2 picks. He had such a bad preseason that I felt it was a mistake almost immediately after drafting him in the 7th round. This necessitated drafting a 2nd QB much earlier than I would have wanted to.
3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?
I think that Swinganamiss has a very strong team, but staying away from injuries will as in the NFL be the deciding factor in winning the league.
4. What surprised you most about the draft?
The speed at which it was completed.
5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?
Not draft Griffin.

bad start of the season. 1 opponent scores 167 points. 1 player out for the year (Derrick Johnson) 1 player likely out for some time (Chris Long) 1 player status still unknown (Doug Martin)
Tampa play calling sucked until the 4th quarter (bad for Doug Martin who was already out by then) Oakland play calling is too conservative (bad for James Jones who at least got a garbage TD) my decision making skills suck. I could have had 30 more points with players sitting on my bench (Steve Smith, Chris Ivory, Delanie Walker)
at least Cordarelle Patterson, Lavonte David and Harrison Smith are worth their money. I hope Stafford follows today. I just need a Matt Ryan like performance.

Equally bad start...
Andre Ellington hurt for who knows how long. Ben Tate already hurt Jordan Reed hurt Barry Church hurt Tony Romo either hurt (would explain his 3 picks) or just really bad

thank you Matthew Stafford for carrying my team over the finish line. 1-1 start to begin the season with 3 to 4 bodies down. could have been better though.

If there's a benefit to racking up Points Against then I'm having a good week. Otherwise, not so much.

When did Peppers go back to being a DE ? In all other leagues he is still showing at LB.

We moved him back after the draft, since MFL changed his position after our draft.

Judy, that does not conform to the rules on position eligibility. He should be lb for anyone picking him up at this point. I did not even know u changed it until he was picked up this week.

My interest in Peppers was mainly due to the fact that he's playing his former team.
Really didn't notice that he was a LB listed as a DE, which is certainly an unfair advantage, so I agree with the move.
With all the LB injuries and 6 byes this week, another LB isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Wow... WG starts two guys on bye and an injured Tyvon Branch (and gets 0 points out of Pierce) and still wins one of his games... go figure...

Need help at RB (WR pretty weak too)
Offering: New and improved, finally learned the new system, got the INTs out of his system, 2 time Super Bowl Champ, younger brother of sure fire 1st ballot HOF QB, and all around nice guy Eli Manning.
All offers will be considered

Another Thursday night, another plethora of fantasy points that I didn't partake of and yet another huge hole to dig out of (actually 2 holes).
I might be up for making some trades.

I'd be open to trading one of my depth RB's for a mid level WR if anyone is interested. Bishop Sankey and Storm Johnson are who I'd be most interested in moving.

This is by far the worst AAA team I have fielded and it's all on me due to crappy drafting.
Sigh...

Why did the trade between Jaydog and myself never happen. He made the offer on 22 Oct. I accepted it on 25 Oct and nothing has changed. Still have the player I traded to him.

All, sorry about the inactive player. Left town early Weds and had no access at all until I got home midday yesterday. WiFi at the RV park was basically useless.

Frustrating year. My team came together at the end of the season, but it was too late to make up enough points to make the playoffs. Had my first round pick, Calvin Johnson, not missed 4 games due to injury and only get 19 points in the 2 game prior due to the injury, I would have easily made the playoffs on points and possibly on won-lost record. It has been fun--good luck to the teams in the playoffs.

Blind Bidding waivers runs at 3pm on Thursday during the playoffs. This is because stat changes, that may impact who is still "alive" do not run until Thursday morning.

Despite the 8 total points from my starting RB's and TE, I still had a chance, had Romo not thrown all of his touchdowns to Dez Bryant... oh well. Congrats GoatLocker, good luck in the finals.
(Hoping this serves as a jinx, and Bennett gets you -4 points tonight!)
