Subject: 2015 RotoGurupie Keeper 14
Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Sat, Jun 13, 2015, 09:05
I sent out a quick email to assess the interest in continuing this year, before paying for the league.
11 said "yes", Bonka said "probably", and two did not respond (JoeyZ & Skeepers).
So I went ahead and renewed at the earlybird rate of $59.95. That works out to $4.29 per team.
If you pay using paypal, send to davehall@rotoguru2.com, use the "send to friends or family" option (no fee). Put Keeper14 (or K14) in the note field.
If you send a check, use the address at the bottom of the GuruPatron info page.

Bonka just told me he is withdrawing from the league this year.
That means we'll need a replacement manager, and also a commish.
I'm hoping someone can step up and take the lead on recruiting, because I've got some travel planned in the next few weeks, and I've also got to get the RIFC leagues organized. So if you depend on me to get things going, then the league will probably collapse.

I can probably help out as co-commish... with a family now it's hard for me to be reliably available for handling any last-minute pre-game snafus (let alone tweak my lineups based on player status updates), but I think I can carry at least 50% of the week-to-week load.

Hardest work is in the pre season, setting keepers and draft picks. And then pushing folks to actually draft in a timely fashion...

Anyone have any thoughts on a calendar? I would like to be finished the draft before Labor Day, so back it up 12 days, that would begin it Monday August 24. The last preseason game is ??? probably that weekend???
Maybe open up the draft that Friday the 21st, but not make it mandatory/on the clock?
Thoughts??
So to give me time to set up the draft keepers thingie, how about keepers due Monday August 17 with flexibility to change if someone gets injured.
Also remember to check your IR player for keepers...

I agree with making August 17 the keeper deadline and starting the draft on August 24. This draft typically goes pretty fast.

To keep in mind:
One thing to add to the spreadsheet are the players not drafted that are keeper eligible. Teams can retain any player picked up between the draft and the start of the playoffs for a 24th round pick.
Players drafted, dropped, and then picked up (by any team, including the original dropping team) also follow this rule except in 2 cases: - the player went on IR before being dropped - the player was picked up before going through a blind bid cycle (example: player is dropped on Wednesday and picked up on Friday)
In these cases, the player maintains the round in which the player was drafted.

Last year the draft took 7 days. First pick was on Aug 24, and last pick on Aug 31.
If we start again on Aug 24, and keep the same pace, we'll finish a full week before Labor Day, and 10 days before the season starts. Aug 24 is only the second weekend of preseason.
I'd suggest pushing back the timeline by a week. Say, keepers by Aug 24, and draft starts around Aug 30.

32.
How to -- as best I can tell. At least this is what I did!
Go to the 2014 homepage and print out the draft grid format to see where you drafted players last year. Look at who you plan to keep. If they are on that grid, life is easier.
Next look at the actual draft to see who your keepers were for 2014. You need to look at the full format draft info to see who your keepers were.
Keeping a keeper? Cut 2014 round in half (4th becomes 2nd, 16 become 8, 11 becomes 6) and figure it out.
If you drafted a guy in 2014, he stays in that slot for one year.
If you FA'd him, he goes into your 24 slot; if you keep 3 of that kind of guy, they go into 24, 23 and 22.
You could also ask another manger to check your info to see if you have it correct...
I will be double checking after the keepers are chosen On Monday, August 24 by 8 pm EDT.
If this is not correct, please let me know. I am new to commishing this league and so didn't pay attention to some of the drafting slot details...

Ghostwood Keepers (Judy) Julio Jones (1) Marshawn Lynch (1) Russell Wilson (2) Alfred Morris (3)

This means that my first pick will be in Round 5.

I loaded rosters from 2014 onto your 2015 team. When you decide on your keepers, go to
Reports --> Franchise --> Keepers
to select your keepers.
It does not become permanent until I click a special button, so you can change them up to the deadline.

I'm fairly sure my numbers are correct. My 2014 keepers were ADP, Demaryius, Fitzgerald (traded), RG3 (cut), Hardy (cut), and Justin Hunter (will be dropping). All my other players were drafted new in 2014 or picked up during the season.
Please let me know if I messed this up.

Manager "A" trades a guy picked in round 16 last year to another manager "B", the player stays at 16 and "B" loses whatever draft slot he traded for:
A gives Player x at slot 16 to B plus draft pick 24 (just to even out picks) B gives draft pick 10 to A. Player x stays in round 16 for B.
If it was the second year for player x, he would go into draft slot 8 for B.
Do I have it correct?

I was under the impression that the "rounding down" in the rules for multi year keepers meant that a keeper in an odd round X went to (X-1)/2, not (X+1)/2. For instance, Vampire's listing of JJ Watt going from 7 to 3.
Can anyone else confirm? I looked at last year's thread yet it did not seem clear that was what we did.

If you are keeping a prior keeper, I suggest going back to 2013's draft. For example, Antonio Brown I believe is a 1st rounder now as he was a 5th round keeper 2 years ago in 2013. He was put as a 4th round keeper in 2014's draft because the team kept 3 other 1st/2nd rounders.

Here are the by laws:
Each player chosen in Year X and kept in subsequent years will require a manager to forfeit their original draft pick (or better) in the corresponding Year-X-draft-round the player was chosen in for the year X+1 draft. Beginning in year X+2, keeping the same player will result in the loss of their originaly draft pick (or better) corresponding to the pick from Year X divided in half, rounded down to the nearest whole number. This division and rounding shall apply each subsequent year (X+3, X+4, etc) until keeping a player requires forfeiting a first round pick every year.
corresponding to the pick from Year X divided in half, rounded down to the nearest whole number.
So does an 11 become a 5 or a 6?

Fix this in the 2015 draft order please:
Beezer's Heinz 57s / VampireWeekend Trade Beezer's Heinz 57s gave up Fitzgerald, Larry ARI WR VampireWeekend gave up Year 2015 Round 8 Draft Pick from VampireWeekend
I think to make it even Vamp needs a bottom pick from Beeze???

Forget 77 as a specific example because it is not. Oops. Jeffrey goes to 5 or is it 6?

If two players are slotted for the same round, one would go with the next earlier pick. If two players are both 11th round keepers, one would occupy a 10th round slot and the other would occupy the 11th round slot.

I got a couple of offers, and thanks for responding, but what I'm really looking for is a 24th round keeper. A guy that you picked up on wavers or a FA.
Since everyone is doing their own keeper figuring this year, there's no league chart for me to look at to easily see who might be available.
When you have a shortage of good keepers like I do, I don't mind rolling the dice on a guy with potential that'll only cost me a 24.

Mjd. Yes, sorry. I did not have the time to do that. Folks will need to post round 24 folks for you to look at or email you.
You could compare the draft grid from 2014 with the final rosters carried over to 2015, but that could be a ton of work. Hopefully someone will offer you a FA guy.
You did post here so you might get an offer.

I hear u judy. Do what u need to do. I Just think it's better to keep options open as long as possible in a league like this.
If ogletree gets dinged up with even a 3 week injury, I might want to keep someone else. No reason to require some catastrophic injury. It's not like more than a few of the 84 will have an injury in the next week.
Anyway...please add ogletree(12) as my last keeper.

For those of you who will be using your phone for much of the draft, there is a free app called MFL Platinum that should be a much better option than going through the browser interface.
It's apparently available for both android and iPhone.
It seems as though every year we have one or two phone-related draft snafus. This may help alleviate that.

From the by laws:
Keepers must be declared either at the RotoGuru Message Forum in the appropriate thread or by e-mailing the commissioner. The deadline for these declarations shall be one week before the official start of the draft. An exact date for this will be stipulated each season and the Commissioner will notify managers in advance.

Judy, you don't have to explain the rules. I read the rules. I also read the thread from last year and the 2013 season. Even in 2013 the keeper deadline was Friday night for a Sunday morning draft start.
The bylaws are a product of the pain to do the setup (maybe the old commish was an expert at the setup or maybe the pain itself has reduced over the years), but I don't see the reason to get all "you will have 24 hours to point out errors. Then you are stuck." and "any of your guys suffers a catastrophic injury before the draft, we can swap him out. My thought are catastrophic is 'out for the season' ”
What's the point to be so strict? If I decided tomorrow that I wanted to keep JPP instead of Ogletree, even if it's "just because I want a guy with 9 fingers on my team," what's the harm ?
I will abide by whatever the league and commish are saying, but I can still inquire about why we are suddenly following a rule that hasn't been followed for the last 2 years, at least.
Thanks for all the work you do as commish. I do not want to keep JPP!

Swing I am just following what I thought to be the rules, I was just an owner last year and to help save this league I volunteered to help commish it. I did not have time to look over last year's threads. As far as I am concerned you can do what you want with JPP. I won't get to the keeper list probably until tomorrow due to things in my real life. I just kept the original deadline in the By laws because that is all I knew.
Catastrophic I thought was following guru's proposal due to the early drafts and the late start. 24 guys have blown ACL's already!!!
Just know that when I get time I will update the spreadsheet, send it out to be sure I am correct and then I will hope that everyone has entered their keepers in MFL and hit the keep keepers button and THEN you are stuck.
It is the owners responsibility to select keepers in MFL.
This is not an easy league to commish pre draft and I am trying to do it correctly.

Now, one more question as a newbie.
How do you place keepers, when a team has two picks in the same round? For instance, Beezer has 2 10th round picks and 2 12th round picks. I see you have placed his keepers at the later pick of each round. 10.03 and 10.06, keeper placed at 10.06. 12.06 and 12.08, keeper placed at 12.08.
I don't know if this is consistent with years past. Hopefully someone knows.

Is that what we decided? I thought it was your original draft slotted pick or else your next earliest pick (regardless of whether that's same round)... but I could be wrong on that. I remember it was debated in a prior year, but maybe what Beezer said was the outcome instead.

The process for filling multiple spots doesn't seem to be documented, so I guess it's "Commissioner's choice".
Skimming over the picks as they stand now, the differences are so minimal that I'd suggest we just move on. Anyone who doesn't like it can volunteer to be the next commissioner.

forfeit their original draft pick (or better)
means....
Beezer should use(forfeit) 12.06 (or better) for keeping Quinn, since Beezer's slot in the draft is 06.
He can use 10.06 or better, to keep Kelce. Obviously he would choose to use 10.06 instead of 10.03.

This also affects WG, after his trade with me (He now has 2 Rd 6 picks). Otherwise, I wouldn't have even inquired about the rule in the first place. Sorry to stir up trouble!

Since it has been 5 hours since the last pick was made -- despite email reminders -- I was going to turn on a 6 hour clock. But if I do it, the current pick would be made -- which I assume means skipped --...
Also the draft does not officially open until 8 am today. Hopefully WG will pick ASAP!

What the heck am I doing with seven (7!) RB and only 4 WR? It means I am clueless and not paying attention... Sigh.

I just pushed Donald in. It takes someone with commish powers to do that.
I'm heading out for the day, so its unlikely I'll be able to accommodate more skipped picks in the next 6-8 hours.

Yes! I got 3 extra rush/rec yards somewhere from stat corrections. The 0.3 pts gave me a narrow victory over Ghostwood!

Do we want to add this scoring rule?
Question 1. Why didn't I get points for an offensive player like a QB, RB or WR recovering a fumble from one of his teammates (or, his own fumble) in the end zone for a touchdown? Answer: On Sunday of Week 5, the Falcons scored a TD when Devonta Freeman fumbled the ball on a rushing play, and the ball rolled into the end zone, and then Julio Jones fell on it for a touchdown. (side note - Freeman also scored a 6 yard Rushing TD on a totally different play in the same game).
This TD by Jones is considered to be an "Offensive Fumble Recovery TD" for the player. So you'll have to add that rule to your scoring on the Reports > Rules > League Scoring screen as needed if you want this to count for your league.
You can use either of these rules: "Number of Offensive Fumble Recovery TDs" or "Length of Offensive Fumble Recovery TD". Since 0 yard offensive fumble recoveries can happen when a player falls on the ball in the end zone, be sure to make the scoring for this start at zero yards, and go all of the way up to 100 yards.
After you make the change to your rules, the system will put a confirmation message on your league home page, and that will allow you to choose whether or not to apply the new rule changes to all weeks or just future weeks. Note that the same type of play happened last week when Ed Dickson of the Panthers recovered a 57 yard Offensive Fumble and Scored a TD. You can view all of these types of unusual plays on the "Help > Strange Plays" menu item in your league.

when TDs happen... we should try to make them work in all scenarios (keeping in mind, it shouldn't ever apply to the current season being played; all rule adjustments should be considered for NEXT year IMHO).

The RIFC rule has always been that ALL TD's scored count for 6 points, regardless of type. I'm guessing that MFL added this category sometime in the last few years, and I didn't notice it at the time. I have already amended the scoring setup for all of the RIFC leagues to include this type of TD.
No points for the fumble recovery, though. You only get points for recovering a fumble from the opponent.
So, I would argue that we should change the setup to include fumble recovery TDs. I don't look at this as a scoring rule change; it's a way to allow the system to automatically score something that would previously have been a manual adjustment.

As Guru said, it was probably a change by MFL. We've always counted all touchdowns.

I feel compelled to point out how ridiculously tight the standings are right now. WG at 10-6, 8(!) teams at 9-7, GL at 8-8, and 2 teams at 7-9. 12 teams within 3 games of first place!

Heading into final week of season, it'll take a minimum 13 wins to make the top 6 spots (based on record). So all but 4 teams could make it on record... but more likely it will take 14 or 15 wins to make the top 6.
Of the bottom 4 teams, TD Dragons still has a strong chance to make it in based on points with a strong game this week. Must have lost a lot of close games... only a -0.5 point differential, but somehow that translates to 8-16. By contrast, I'm sitting on a -6.8 point differential but have somehow stumbled my way to 14-10.
Guru has a +0.5 point differential, but alas a 10-14 record to show for it... looks like we all took it easy on him with the lowest average PA this season (and I have the "honor" of the highest PA this year).

F. PLAYOFFS
8 teams
Top 6 W/L records plus the 2 teams with the highest total points (outside of the top 6 W/L) make the playoffs.
The top 4 W/L records are seeded 1-4. The 5-8 seeds are set based on highest to lowest total points.
Teams with equivalent W/L records are seeded based on total points
Bracket is fixed (no reseeding after each round)
If a playoff game ends in a tie score, the team with the better seed shall advance.
Teams which are not still active in the Championship playoffs may not make any transactions - adds or drops - even if they are still competing in the Consolation bracket.

And this:
G. CONSOLATION BOWL AND DRAFT ORDER
A Consolation Bracket will be established for the 4 lowest ranked teams at the end of the regular season (using regular season W/L%). The teams will be seeded 1-4. In NFL Week 14, Seed 1 plays Seed 4 and Seed 2 plays Seed 3. The winners of those two games play in NFL Week 15 in the Toilet Bowl.
Draft slot 1 will be the winner of the Toilet Bowl. Draft slots 2 through 6 will be comprised of non playoff teams sorted by reverse of the previous regular season's points for total. Draft slots 7 through 13 will be comprised of playoff teams sorted by the reverse of the previous season's playoff seeding. Draft slot 14 will be the winner of the previous season's playoff.
The draft will maintain the same order every round throughout (it will not snake).

Not sure why Beezer's waiver claims were processed. I thought that eliminating his ability to make add/drop transactions would trump any claims already placed. Apparently not.
So, I guess I have to reverse those two processed claims.

189 - first I deleted the waiver claims. Turns out that only deleted the record of them, but did not actually reverse the transaction. Not sure what the point of that capability is. Cosmetics only.
So then I put through another transaction that actually accomplished the reversal. You can see the Beezer reversals, dropping Cousins and Whittaker, adding (back) Herron and Thompson.
So the reversal transaction now shows up, even though the record of the original claim has disappeared.

Congrats Doug! It is great to see an original member break through and grab the brass ring!
While I have greatly enjoyed this league since it started in 2007, it is time for me to step away. I have a ton of respect for this league and everyone in it, so I wanted to give as much lead time as possible to find a good replacement. Thanks for 9 great seasons!

Thanks Beezer, and sorry to see you go. You've been a great manager for a long time, and thank you for helping make this such a great league.
I have struggled more in this league over the years than any of my other leagues... perhaps that is just a testament to the quality of the other managers here and just how much more difficult it is to get a sleeper or key WW pickup.
Amazingly to me, I won all 5 of my championship games yesterday. It's been quite a year for me in Fantasy Football! 6 of my 7 leagues (and 4 of 5 championships) originate from these boards, so a big thanks again to Guru and the whole community for making this such a fun place to share our love of this game... both in the good years and the years we struggle! If this wasn't such a solid group of managers I probably wouldn't push through all those struggle years to be able to enjoy a year like this one.

Judy - your #1 pick probably won't do you much good. If you hold onto Lynch, J. Jones, R. Wilson, and Morris again, you won't have a pick in the first four rounds.
I'll probably be blowing up my roster this off-season, jettisoning the guys who are taking up my top picks, and keeping guys with much deeper picks. That means that Aaron Rodgers(1), R. Cobb(1), & TY Hilton(2) will probably be available for pre-draft trades.

Congrats Doug! I stupidly left Alshon in and was afraid that that would cost me the win, but the guy I would have used instead (Diggs) only went 4-19 so I would have lost anyway. I was debating Earl Thomas and Harrison Smith to replace Tyrann Mathieu, and Smith had a TD so I think I may have won if I went with him over Thomas; or both Smith and Diggs. Alas, it was not meant to be. You had a great team and a great season, so congrats on the victory and championship!
