0 Subject: RIFC AA 2017: draft discussion

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Aug 17, 2017, 10:09

Since there are some new RIFC players in this league, I'm going to set up this separate thread with lots of info about the draft process.

We use a slow draft process on the myfantasyleague.com hosting site. The draft typically requires 8-10 days to complete, and managers should anticipate making at least 2 picks per day, and some days more.

The draft will begin on Thursday, August 24. For the first round, we will not use a timer, as I want to make sure everyone is on board and understands how to make picks.

After the first round, we will apply a 4 hour time limit. The intent of the limit is not to give everyone 4 hours to make each pick. If that happens, the draft will take several months to complete. Hopefully, most picks will be made in an hour or less. The clock will be turned off from midnight to 8am ET, so if you go on the clock at 10pm, your clock will expire at 10am the next morning.

To keep the draft moving, is critical that you set up the system to notify you when it is your turn to pick. Notifications can be sent by email or by text message. To set this up, under the "For Owners" menu at the very top of the league page, select "Franchise setup". Make sure your email address is correct. The click on the "CONTACT INFO" link in select the event that you want to be notifed about. At a minimum, select "When I'm on the clock for my draft". If you want to receive a notice with each pick, then also click "Draft Status update."

If you want to receive text messages, then click on the "WIRELESS" link and enter your cell number and cell carrier. Then select the items you want to receive notifications for. Note that there is a cell phone validation process that will need to be completed before you can receive recurring text messages.

In a separate post, I'll provide instructions on how to use the myfantasyleague system for making draft picks.

I am implementing some additional time limits to attempt to coax habitually slow drafters into a better flow. Here is the framework:
We establish a point system. If you timeout (i.e., you don’t make your pick before your allotted time expires), you accumulate 2 points.

If you exceed three hours of clock time but don’t timeout (the clock will initially be set at 4 hours), you accumulate 1 point.

Points will only be assigned after the first round, which is generally an untimed round anyway.

If you accumulate 2 points in total (either one timeout or two close calls), your clock time is reduced to 3 hours per pick for the remainder of the draft. That means your next timeout would be at 3 hours.

If you accumulate 4 points in total, your clock is shortened to two hours. At 6 points, your clock is shortened to one hour. That’s the ultimate limit.

Commissioners will need to monitor this, and will have the discretion to defer penalties if they believe the draft is moving OK and the time delays haven’t been too aggravating (or if the offending drafter has a good story.) Commissioners will also need to enforce the shorter clocks, since the system won’t be able to handle different time limits for each manager.
Hopefully, by adding some incentives to avoid multiple lengthy delays, the penalties won’t have to be enforced. If you expect to be in circumstances when your ability to make a live pick is restricted, you may need to set up some queues in advance so that the system can pick for you. More on this below.

You can view the draft in progress by clicking on the DRAFT link just below the league header. However, you won't use this page to enter your picks; it's strictly for display.

Here are some instructions for executing your draft picks.
(These are copied from last year's thread. Please let me know if I have misspecified anything)

1. "My Draft List" - Under the "For Owners" menu (at the top), there is an item called My Draft List. You can think of this as your personal pre-ranking of players if you wish, although it has one important operational impact. If your 4-hour clock expires, then your pick will be automatically selected as the top name on your "My Draft List". Only if that list is empty will your pick be skipped. (More on this in a moment.)

2. "Pre-Draft Pick" list - You access this through "For owners->Draft"
These are the equivalent of the Drafttime.com "queue", with several important distinctions:
There is a separate list/queue for each round, and they do not carry over, and
If there is a name in your queue, that player will be immediately selected when it is your turn to draft. The only way to turn off a round-specific queue is to empty it. Therefore, it is important to keep your queues empty unless you are sure that they should be used. If you expect to want to load & unload your queue frequently (similar to turning it on or off), then you should probably keep a list of players in "My Draft list", as you can quickly pull up that short list to add players to any queue.

Of course, if you have players in "My Draft List", then you are also subject to having those players selected if you should time-out. Typically, that shouldn't be a problem, as timing-out should be a rare occurrence.

If you want to keep players loaded in "My Draft List" and you don't want to risk the top name being selected automatically upon timeout, then I suggest putting a "placeholder" player at the top of your list - preferably someone who is retired, or injured, or clearly not a viable pick. We can come up with specific placeholder options, if needed. If you time-out and a placeholder player is automatically selected for you, then you can have the commish replace that player with a real pick when you are available.

Note that because queued picks are automatically processed, there is no role tantamount to a designated picker. As commissioner, I can enter a pick on anyone’s behalf. Other than that, you – or anyone else with access to your MFL password – will be the only one who can directly enter a pick.

If your pick times out and is skipped, only the commissioner can insert a pick afterwards. If this happens to you, please send your make-up pick to me by email or text message. You can post here as well - but do not rely on this thread as the primary means of communication for a make-up pick.

If any of these instructions are unclear, please ask. And if anything is incorrect, please alert!

If you should ever happen to time out on your pick, you pick will be skipped and you'll have to email me to insert it for you. Send your email to davehall@rotoguru2.com.

If you have a pick skipped that has not been made up, your next pick may also be skipped immediately as soon as it is due. So, for example, if you fail to make a pick within the 4 hour limit in round 5, your next pick in round 6 may be skipped as well if you have not yet made up your 5th round pick by that time.

If your scheduling is such that you anticipate a possible delay and setting up a queue is not feasible, please post a message here or send me an email in advance. This should not become a habit - but I understand that there may be times when life conspires to make things difficult.

League rules for 2017. Changes from the prior year are shown in blue:

Draft
“Banzai” format: Same as a traditional snake, except the third round is reversed. Thus, the team with the first overall pick has the last pick in rounds 2, 3, and 4.

Safety 3 (including safety on extra point attempt)<
Blocked kick (FG, XP, punt) 2
Defensive conversion returns (extra point) 2

Unlisted players
During the draft, any player may be drafted, regardless of whether or not the player is listed at the hosting game site. Once the draft is completed, unlisted players may not be added to any roster. This applies for any post-draft waiver processing as well.

In the event that a drafted player is not listed after the draft has completed, a placeholder player will be assigned to the drafting team, to be replaced by the drafted player as soon as he is available.

Position eligibility
Except as defined below, a players position eligibility will be that assigned by the league hosting site.

If a player is listed at one position when drafted and that position is subsequently changed by the hosting site, the manager drafting that player may elect to retain the original position. In this event, that player will keep the drafted position eligibility until he is dropped or traded, at which time the eligibility will revert to the hosting system's default position.

Injured Reserve
Each team will have one slot available for injured reserve. A player may only be placed on injured reserve when he is so designated by the NFL and the hosting site reflects that IR status.

If a manager adds a player who is already designated as IR at the time of his pickup (either through priority claiming or free agent pickup), that team must keep the player on its active roster until the following week. Players who are already designated as IR when drafted are not subject to this limitation, and may be placed in the IR slot immediately after the draft.

Once an IR player has returned to active status by the NFL, that player must be removed from the IR slot no later than the Wednesday following his activation. If an ineligible player remains in an IR slot after this time, the commissioner may forcibly drop such player after a 24-hour notice (via email) to the manager.

Priority Claiming
All free agents (any players not on a current roster) are subject to a weekly claiming process at 7:00pm ET on Wednesday, using a blind bidding process. Each team will be allocated a budget for the regular season of $100, with a minimum bid of $1. Ties will be broken in favor of the current standings (with applicable tiebreakers), worst-to-first. Blind bidding will use the conditional setup at MFL.

Starting at 10:00pm ET on each Wednesday, all free agents who have cleared waivers may be picked up by any team "first come, first served. " However, dropped players will subject to a one day lockout period, after which they will be subject to the next scheduled blind bidding period. Blind bidding for dropped players will be scheduled for Thursdays at 7:30pm ET and Sundays at 8:00 am ET.

During the postseason (weeks 14-16), the first weekly blind bidding will be pushed back to Thursday so that any stats corrections (which might conceivably impact playoff results from the prior weekend) can be processed. For surviving teams in the championship bracket, blind bidding will take place at 3pm ET on Thursday, with free agents released for FCFS pickup at 6pm ET. Dropped players will be subject to blind bidding only on Sunday morning at 8:00 am ET

Immediately following the draft, undrafted players will be subject to a priority claiming process (blind bidding), with tiebreaking priorities equal to the reverse of the draft selection order (i.e, the order in which team selected their draft sequence.)

Starting five minutes prior to the scheduled start of each NFL game, no player in that game may be dropped, regardless of whether the player is an active or bench player.

Schedule
13 week round robin
Doubleheaders all weeks 1-13 (play each team twice)
Single elimination playoffs, weeks 14-16

Trades and trade deadline
During the draft, trades may include draft picks. Trades will normally be approved immediately by the Commissioner, assuming they are reasonably balanced. If league managers believe an announced trade is unbalanced, they should protest the trade ASAP.

After the draft, trades will be subject to a review period. For the first 24 hours following a trade, managers may protest a trade by posting a message at the RotoGuru forum, or by sending an email to the Commissioner. If at least 3 managers protest a trade within 24 hours of its announcement, then all managers will be polled within the next 24 hours. If seven or more managers vote to veto a trade, then it will not be approved. If a proposed trade is announced less than 24 hours before the earliest freeze for any player involved, then the entire trade will not be processed until the following week.

If a trade does not receive at least 3 protests, then it will be effective 24 hours after it is announced. If a trade receives at least 3 protests but the protests are not upheld in a full league vote, then the trade will be processed 48 hours after it is announced.

The trade deadline is the weekend following the final week with byes.

Stat corrections
Official stat corrections will be automatically applied. This typically happens on Thursday morning. In the playoffs, this can lead to an issue if a team is suddenly “back in the game”, but that team was unable to make roster moves the prior day. If a stat correction changes a playoff matchup at the last minute, then any impacted team will be given the opportunity to make a last minute roster move, if needed. The Commissioner will attempt to ensure that this provision is enabled as fairly as possible under the circumstances.

During the playoffs, once the first game of the week has started, no stat corrections will be allowed thereafter.

Playoffs
8 teams, single elimination
The 8 teams will be those with the top 6 W/L records plus the two other teams with the most points
The top four seeds will be based on W/L record (including applicable tiebreakers)
Seeds 5-8 will be based on total points for the other four playoff teams
Teams with equivalent W/L records are ranked based on total points first, then head-to-head record.
Bracket is fixed (no reseeding after each round)

Blind bidding will continue throughout the playoffs. At the beginning of the playoffs, the top seeded team will receive an additional blind bidding allocation of $16, the second seed will receive $14, … with the 8th seed receiving $2. These allocations will be added to any balances remaining from the regular season. Any blind bidding ties during the playoffs will be awarded in favor of the better seeded team.

If a playoff game ends in a tie score, the team with the better seed shall advance.

There will be no restriction on player add/drop transactions for teams still active in the championship playoffs. Teams which are not still active in the Championship playoffs may not make any transactions - adds or drops - even if they are still competing in the Consolation bracket.

Starting in 2015, I made the following offer to all RIFC leagues. I'll apply the same standard to this league - since our draft will start before most of the 3rd preseason games have been played.

This adjustment applies only to players injured in preseason week #3. We'll "protect" a team who drafts a player before his week #3 game and who is injured in that game. If you are in that situation, you'll have a limited time to make a substitute pick - but only from the player pool still remaining.

So, for example, if Tim Tebow is drafted by Team X prior to his game on Aug 26, and Tebow is injured in that game, then Team X can jettison Tebow and substitute any other player who is still in the undrafted pool at the time of the jettison. This, however, must be done by the end of Monday, August 28.

While this obviously isn't complete insurance, it is designed to keep the draft moving during that first weekend. And it's certainly better than being stuck with an eventual free agent to replace an early draft pick. Hopefully, this situation will never come into play.

I have been called for Jury Duty on 24 Aug. In Colorado, it rarely results in actually being a juror, but who knows. If it goes as expected, it will have no effect on the draft.

On the pre-draft page, click on a player's name to highlight it.

WG times out. His clock was reduced to 3 hours, due to two 3+hour clocks. I did alert him a little more than an hour in advance.

I set up the waiver processing. We will be using a blind bidding system each week. All unrostered players will be subject to a blind bidding process each Wednesday at 7pm ET. Each team will have $100 to spend on waiver claims over the course of the season. Once waivers have been run each week, players who have cleared waivers will be available first come, first served (at no waiver cost). I realize that, for some of you, this will be your first experience using blind bidding.

Blind bid waivers will take place at three times each week:
Wed at 7pm ET
Thurs at 7:30pm ET
Sun at 8am ET

The Wednesday bidding will be for all unrostered players, just as in past years. The Thursday and Sunday bidding will only be for players dropped during the week. A dropped player will be eligible for the first blind bidding that occurs 24 hours after the time of drop. So, for example, a player dropped during Wednesday blind bidding should be subject to the Thursday night bidding. All other players dropped by 8am Saturday will be subject to the Sunday morning bidding. Any player dropped after 8am Saturday will be locked until the next week.

There will be a three hour lockout period after the Wednesday bidding. The purpose is to allow time to review and correct any potential errors in the blind bid processing. FCFS (first come, first served) free agent pickups begin at 10pm Wednesday, and continue through each player's game time.

For consistency, I set up the post-draft bidding on the same schedule: Wed/Thu/Sun. Hopefully, this will allow people to get comfortable with the sequence of events. It will also give us an opportunity to make sure everything works as expected.

Everyone gets $100 blind bid dollars to start the season. Bids must be made in integer increments. Once the season starts, blind bid ties will be broken in reverse order of standings (win%, then points, then HTH). Prior to week #1, ties are broken based on the reverse of draft selection round order. I have a custom waiver order set with that order. That custom order will be deleted after the first weekend, so that it is not used for any subsequent bid tiebreakers.

Here is the league calendar:http://www71.myfantasyleague.com/2017/options?L=67277&O=123

I'll write up more instructions for submitting bids by Monday. Meanwhile, if you have any questions, feel free to post them here.

Draft is now over. Too late to make up any missed picks. Empty slots can be filled through waivers or free agent additions next week.

[52] I see that your first experience with blind bidding will also be your last experience this year - unless you get into the playoffs! (Playoff teams get a few extra BB$ for the playoff rounds)

I bid quite a bit on that guy, but not at the expense of my entire season's worth of bids. Good luck!

Haha yeah, I read several strategy articles regarding blind bidding and the common theme was be aggressive early. Dont have to tell me twice! Lol. Add in that I had a glaring hole at RB2 and I didn't want to take any chances.

If your team keeps it up, you will have no need for any more blind bidding dollars.

Nerf, you beat me by 0.14 this week. Has there ever been a closer match?

I seem to recall there was once a week where someone lost because a QB lost one yard rushing when taking a knee at the end of the game.

Yeah I was sweating that one out until this morning, because every Thursday they post scoring changes for the past week's games, and they DO count. I've been on both ends, but more memorably the wrong end of those scoring changes.

Guru, are you implementing the bye week RB/WR rule for AA?

In 2009, Esquire had an article about a guy who lost by .01 on a last second garbage time Eli Manning interception.

In 2006 or so, I lost a playoff matchup later in the week on a scoring correction.

I claimed Wayne Gallman for $27.
Wondering if anyone else bid and if so how much was the bid?

Can someone explain to me how our waivers work?

I had two bids in (four really, but two are irrelevant).

First, McKinnon for 72 (drop Johnson). That went though. Also, Mack for 4 (drop Elliott). Why did Mack then go to free agency, where he could be picked up by Chucktaylors this morning? I intended to get Mack for 4, and that was the high bid, for a player who was still on my roster. What did I do wrong?

I suspect you had those claims all in a single group (group 1).

Under conditional blind bidding (which is what we use), once a claim is awarded within a group, the rest of requests in that group are ignored.

If you wanted both players, you need to set up the claims for McKinnon and Mack in separate groups.
