Following are my initial determinations of forfeited picks for potential keepers. A lot of manual processing was needed to produce this, so errors are certainly possible – even likely. The rules are complex. Special thanks to Swinganamiss, who provided an independent analysis that I could use as a basis of comparison.

I’d ask that each manager review the list for his/her team, and let me know if you believe anything looks wrong.

The number preceding each player's name shows the round forfeited in the 2018 draft if that player is kept. Of course, if more than one player is kept with the same round, then there are rules for assigning them to adjoining picks. But that doesn’t happen until after keepers are declared.

I'm retiring to concentrate on some health issues. I've made a ton of progress so far and need to continue.

I've really enjoyed this league and thank all those who have been a part of making it happen. Perhaps one day I'll be in a position to come back one day.

We currently have three manager openings due to retirements.

Interested folks should contact me and or post in this thread.

Current managers: If you know of someone who would be good for us, let me know.

We do have a pretty unique format...

A little history.
This league began on the MFL site in 2010. It might have been somewhere else before that (?).

Here are the champs:
2010. IAC Keepers
2011. Skeepers
2012. Ghostwood
2013. WG
2014. Vampire weekend
2015. Snoop dougg
2016. IAC keepers
2017. Ghostwood
2018. TBA!!!!

Crazy idea I just read about.
You might have as well.

A SUPERFLEX POSITION
So your 7 offensive starters would be:

1 QB
2 RB
2WR
1 TE
1 SUPERFLEX (QB, RB, WR TE)

You read that right — the QB could be the flex guy! 14 team league, so 32 starters...?
Yeah, I know byes and all...

Crazy?
Thoughts?

Just thoughts, not necessarily for us, but what do you think? Just trying to wrap your brain with football stuff...in case your local baseball team stinks. I have the Phillies, so I am ok...

I'm not saying we have to mimic 100% what the RIFC is doing... but lets stay relatively close.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the amount of IDP we have... it keeps our leagues relatively unique.

For our scoring format, making a QB eligible for a flex slot would virtually dictate that everyone start 2 QBs most weeks. The average FP/G for QBs ranked 15-28 last season was 14.4 pts. That's slightly higher than the average ppg for the top 14 RBs, and higher than all but two WRs.

So, ... no.

I did like the WR/TE sub for a running back used part of the season last year and wonder if that should be for whole season. I am not sure what the numbers are for a 4th receiver vs. #3 or 4 RB average but at least it is an option depending on matchups.

Agree with the other QB not being a good option. Would do weird things to draft. And some would want three which completely changes everything!

I am in.

Guru thank you for all of the work on the keepers, but I think I found some mistakes on mine, maybe not because the rules are complex. Morgan Burnett was dropped on 10/27 and then picked up on 11/29. Ziggy Anash was picked up on 9/20, so I thought they would be considered FA pickups. Edleman is a question mark. Dropped him 9/5 and then picked up him 11/9, but then placed on the IR on 11/10 so he goes back to the round he was drafted. Just curious if I didn't put him on the IR, would he have been a 24 rd keeper?

[30] Players who were drafted, then dropped, then back on the original roster are the toughest ones to track automatically. So, you are correct - Burnett should be round 24.

Ansah does become 24th rounder as well. I misread the rule on that.

Edelman retains his draft position regardless of add/drop activity because he was on the injured list for the duration. So putting him on IR was immaterial.

I'll make the adjustments above (for Burnett and Ansah).

I just posted my keepers as they are pretty obvious, but I do have 3 leftovers someone might want. The # is their draft slot. I am looking for draft slot upgrades.

Valuables you might want from me for draft swaps:
2. K Allen WR (#5/6/7 WR overall)
9. K Neal DB (#3 DB)
24. C Keenum QB

Edelman round 7
Marvin Jones round 6
Kirk Cousins round 4. I think Cousins could be huge, but I have Garoppolo for a 24th rd keeper.

Currently thinking that my keepers will be 6 of the following 7:

4 Stafford
12 Stills
16 Marquise Lee
20 Adoree Jackson
22 Booker
24 Ebron
24 Ekeler

I have a few trade options who are keeper quality, but command early picks. If you already have a bunch of keepers packed at the front of the draft, they might be useful to you.

Might as well get this out there now, even though we're all probably more focused on keepers than rules at the moment.

Prior to last year, our rule was that if a player is waived and then reacquired before the next blind bidding period, the player maintained the same keeper round status (i.e. based on where he was drafted in the current fantasy season) that he had before being waived. Because of the addition of some extra blind bidding periods for dropped players last year, we had to make a mid-season rule adjustment to protect against a potential loophole.

For 2018 and beyond, I'd like to suggest the following, which is a bit tighter than the adjustment we adopted last year:

Proposal: If a player is dropped during the season but then added to another team either as a F/A pickup or via blind bidding up to and including the following Wednesday's blind bid process, then that player shall maintain the same keeper round status (i.e. where he was drafted in the current fantasy season).

This simplifies the rule, and helps to avoid situations where a quick drop/add sequence could essentially reset a player to a last round draft status. This loophole could especially be exploited by any team with a lot of blind bid dollars remaining near the end of the season. It also retains the draft status for a player who is dropped for his bye week and then re-added immediately afterwards.

Thoughts on timing...

Last season, keepers were due by 11:59pm Sunday, Aug 20.

We started drafting on Thursday, Aug 24 (although technically, there were 2 early picks on Wed. night).

The draft was completed on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Some wanted to start the draft later - to avoid the impact of injuries sustained in preseason week #3. Six rounds of our draft were already completed by Saturday night, Aug 26.

Similar timing was experienced in 2016, although we only got through about 4 rounds prior to Sunday. Still finished by noon on the following Saturday.

By comparison, the RIFC didn't start until noon on Sat, Aug 26. We also finished that draft on Saturday, Sept 2.

With a league of experienced managers and drafters, there is no reason that we couldn't pull off the entire draft in 7 days. The RIFC drafted 336 players in that time frame. This league only needs to draft 252 players, since 84 are kept. And the two slowest drafters from last year are no longer in the league this year.

So - I'd propose this:
Keepers locked by 11:59pm Tuesday, Aug 21. This allows for 24 hours after the completion of all week #2 preseason games,

Draft starts on Sunday, Aug 26. If people want to make early picks on Saturday, they'd have that option. But by Sunday morning, all but two of the week #3 games will have been played.

I know this is probably later than Judy prefers, but there is no reason that we couldn't pull it off.

Not sure if its worth mentioning, but there was some chatter about insurance for preseason injury, like in regular rifc. Don't recall if it was adopted here or not.

Just throwing this out there... my family is on vacation from Aug 23 -> Sep 2 this year. We will be spending time with family, friends, Disney characters, Lego characters, SoCal beaches, and the Pacific Ocean.

I will send a couple folks both my primary and secondary phone numbers as well as "In case of emergency... call my wife" info. In general, I should be able to draft via smartphone, set up queues, etc... but I'm also not going to spend every waking minute glued to my device. I appreciate your patience/understanding and will do my best to keep my participation timely.

This was (and is) the "insurance" rule:
This adjustment applies only to players injured in preseason week #3. We'll "protect" a team who drafts a player before his week #3 game and who is injured in that game. If you are in that situation, you'll have a limited time to make a substitute pick - but only from the player pool still remaining.

So, for example, if Tim Tebow is drafted by Team X prior to his game on Aug 25, and Tebow is injured in that game, then Team X can jettison Tebow and substitute any other player who is still in the undrafted pool at the time of the jettison. This, however, must be done by the end of Monday (August 27).

While this obviously isn't complete insurance, it is designed to keep the draft moving during that first weekend. And it's certainly better than being stuck with an eventual free agent to replace an early draft pick. Hopefully, this situation will never come into play.
We did use it last year, and will continue to use it in RIFC leagues. I don't see why we wouldn't also continue to apply it here.

Wondering if there could be a provision for keepers who get injured in same situation. Like if Spencer Ware gets hurt in wk3 preseason, you can pick from your other yet undrafted prior keepers at that round or later.

quote from # 15 above:

The number preceding each player's name shows the round forfeited in the 2018 draft if that player is kept. Of course, if more than one player is kept with the same round, then there are rules for assigning them to adjoining picks. But that doesn’t happen until after keepers are declared.

Could some one please point me to that rules assigning adjoining picks .. for instance if I have no keepers assigned a #1 .. but have 2 or 3 players to keep assigned a #3 pick

Special league rules:
http://www66.myfantasyleague.com/2018/options?L=23784&O=26
(Scroll down for keeper rules)
If two players on the same fantasy team are drafted in the same round and then kept, one of them counts as the next lowest (numerically) draft pick in the subsequent draft. If three players on the same team require forfeiture of equal draft rounds to be kept, the owner forfeits that round's pick, plus the two picks from the straddling rounds.

In your example, if you have two players at #3, one will drop to #2. If you have three players at #3, they'll become #2, #3, and #4.

This question has been raised several times in the past week.

The general question is, "If I have a 1st round keeper and I trade away my 1st round pick, does my keeper just drop back to a 2nd rounder?"

I was surprised to not find this addressed in the keeper rules posted on the MFL site, as I know it has come up before - probably long ago. It's probably addressed in one or more threads from years back - but finding those discussions may be difficult.

Here is my understanding:
The clear precedent is that if you keep someone requiring a first round pick, then you must have a first round pick. If you trade away your first round pick, you must acquire someone else's 1st round pick, or else you cannot keep that player.

In general, I believe the rule is that if you have traded away any picks, your keepers can move forward to an earlier pick that you still do have, but cannot move backward any more than they would if you owned all of your picks in each of rounds 1-24.

So, for example, if you have a 12th round keeper and you have traded away your 12th round pick, then your keeper moves ahead to 11, or 10, or whatever earlier pick is available.

By extension, if you have two 2nd round keepers, then you must have at least two 2nd round picks available. Obviously a 1st and 2nd round pick is OK, or even two first round picks with no second rounder. But you can't keep two second rounders if you have no 1st round pick and only one second round pick.

And if you are keeping three first rounders, then you must own at least a pick in each of rounds 1-3 (or better).

To extend insurance to keepers, I think the following adjustments are the most logical approach:
This adjustment applies only to players injured through preseason week #3 games. We'll "protect" a team who keeps or drafts a player before his week #3 game and who is injured in that game (or, in the case of a keeper, between the keeper date and the end of preseason game #3). If you are in that situation, you'll have a limited time to make a substitute pick - but only from the player pool still remaining. A replacement keeper pick must be based on the league rules for keepers, and the substitute keeper must still be available in the undrafted player pool at the time of the substitution.

I'm sure there can be tricky situations, and we may just need to leave it to the commish to resolve those as equitably as possible if/when they arise.

I wasn't able to do it fully.

Keepers cannot be changed now (without going back to scratch).

I was able to replace Lee with Ebron in pick 16.08, which at least protects Ebron from being drafted by anyone else.

Sometime before round 16, I'll have to figure out how to get the proper draft sequence worked out.

Here is the response I got from MFL:
There is not an option to adjust this now that your draft is underway. You would have to use the "Change Draft Pick" for that owner when the pick is at 16.08.

For pick 23.08 you would want to Skip the pick and you can manually add the player via load rosters.
So, for now, I'll just leave Ebron in the 16.08 slot. When we get to pick 16.08, I'll need to slide in a new player. At that point, Ebron will be back in the pool. Perhaps I'll switch his position to PK at that point, hopefully to ensure that no one else picks him up.

Turns out I can add a player directly to a roster, outside of the draft. So when we get to pick 16.08, I'll manually replace Ebron with my pick at the time, and then add Ebron directly to my roster.

So the only need will be to have Swinganamiss wait at 16.09 until I replace my pick at 16.08.

Reposting [55], because it's generated no response whatsoever. We should address this before the season starts:

I'm in a lot of leagues with lots of variations on rules... can someone clarify our IR rule with respect to the following question... I don't see anything about this on the site rules so guessing it's the latter case, just want to confirm:

Does a player need to be on roster prior to IR designation and/or news of possible IR move in order to be eligible... or can I pick up a player from draft/waivers/FA who is already on IR (or known to be heading there) and then move them to fill that slot?

Also, just a suggestion, but in a few of my other leagues we've expanded IR rules to include other designations including suspension and even bye weeks. Not sure if there's an appetite for it here, but personally I prefer the expanded scope of the IR slot. Could be something to consider for next year.

This is the IR rule for the RIFC leagues:
Injured Reserve
Each team will have one slot available for injured reserve. A player may only be placed on injured reserve when he is so designated by the NFL and the hosting site reflects that IR status.

If a manager adds a player who is already designated as IR at the time of his pickup (either through priority claiming or free agent pickup), that team must keep the player on its active roster until the following week. Players who are already designated as IR when drafted are not subject to this limitation, and may be placed in the IR slot immediately after the draft.

Once an IR player has returned to active status by the NFL, that player must be removed from the IR slot no later than the Wednesday following his activation. If an ineligible player remains in an IR slot after this time, the commissioner may forcibly drop such player after a 24-hour notice (via email) to the manager.
We have usually followed RIFC rules in this league, unless specifically addressed otherwise.

No response(6): Taxman, ArtofMonk, YWK, Swinganamiss, IAC, Judy

Does anyone want Jerick McKinnon via trade? He's round 22 this year; next year would be his year "X + 2" as our keeper rules put it, making him a round 11 keeper (so I believe).

If you would pick him up if dropped, why not offer a 2019 draft upgrade and make sure you get him?

That Beckham trade is either illegal...

Trading for future draft picks is allowed at any time, with the following limitations:

1. Draft picks in rounds 1 through 5 may only be traded beginning 1 month prior to keeper declarations and during the draft itself each summer.

Or, it prevents dougg from keeping Gurley or Beckham next year unless he procures another 1st rd pick.

Am I wrong on both counts?

I wonder why that draft pick trading limitation was established? It's definitely in the rules - but I can't recall the rationale.

Regardless, I agree that Doug cannot keep Gurley or Beckham (or both) next year without having at least a first round pick.

[157] The system only allows for trading picks or not. There is no ability to restrict certain picks.

So it's going to have to be manually enforced (and remembered).

Or else we need to change the rule.

Please clarify on this rule....in one place it's talking about "fantasy IR" and in another it's talking about "NFL IR". So, what is really meant ?

2. Any player who is placed on fantasy IR shall maintain his keeper round status even if he is waived by his fantasy manager. A player placed on NFL IR maintains the status of the draft round in which he was chosen in the draft immediately prior to that season (undrafted players placed on NFL IR maintain 24th round keeper status the next year).
160Guru

      Sun, Nov 04, 2018, 08:11
My understanding is that it should be referencing NFL IR only. Whether or not a player was added to the fantasy IR slot before being waived should have no bearing.

The rule should probably be re-written.

Makes sense. However, the rule is still vague, even if we talk about NFL IR only.

So, I want to talk about Deion Jones.
He was a Rd 12 Keeper this year, dropped after Wk 1 when he went on NFL IR.
So, using this rule he would be a Rd 12 keeper again next season.

Agree/Disagree ?

I had to parse the rule earlier this year in a certain situation.

In the past it has been the "keeper round status" that has been maintained, not the keeper round itself. (Does that = "the status of the draft round" in the next sentence? I will leave that aside for the moment) That is Odell Beckham was a 6th round keeper in 2017, who if healthy, would become a 3rd-round keeper in 2018. He went on IR; this year, 2018 he was indeed declared to be a 3rd round keeper -- not a 6th-round keeper. He retained his "keeper round status", not his keeper round itself.

I believe Deion Jones was a 24th-round-eligible keeper in 2017, actually slotted into round 21. His keeper status moved to 12th round this year, so his status should be 6th round next year according to that precedent.

That is how my players have been treated in the past, and how I have assumed IR players would be treated in the future in making decisions about them.

Yes, keeper round status.

So if he is kept next season, Jones would drop to a 6th round pick.

Re 55/107... just want to confirm, I've got a bunch of players I've picked up as FAs during the season. In past years I know that means they are a round 24 keeper. But this year for every player I've got to go back and look at the transaction history, right? For example, I picked up OJ Howard on a Sunday as an FA, but he was dropped the previous Wednesday... so even though he went through a blind bid period unclaimed, he now still retains his 2018 draft round (11) for next year keeper purposes rather than dropping to 24 as years prior... is that correct?

Ack, you're right, I had included estimates for Monday night's games in my spreadsheet but when I started plugging in actuals on Monday night, I forgot to remove the estimates... and because Ghostwood had 4 players going that gave them a big boost over Tax who had 1 and Klingons who had 0. Taking out that double-counting and Klingons hold on for the win!

The numbers in post #169 were actually including those estimates, essentially my prediction of final outcome... I just didn't label it that way, honestly because I didn't realize that was what I was posting at the time, lol! I did the prediction math then forgot I had done it. Oops. It came out pretty accurately though, just a few points off for each the first 3 teams.

Not sure how I feel about nailing down the #8 spot. About a month ago, I could see that it was a possibility, but my recent trajectory had rendered it all but unattainable - so I had started to get pumped about playing for the #1 draft slot.

Then I'm suddenly booted out of the toilet bowl altogether, and the best draft position I can hope for is #7. Of course, anything can happen in the playoffs, and if I miraculously catch fire and win it all, then it's all good. But if I get torpedoed in the first round, then snagging the last playoff spot may be a pyrrhic victory.

Re: #179 personally I'd rather we stick with same schedule as default and delay waivers until Thursday only in the event there is a close game where there's a reasonable-even-if-small chance that a stat change might affect the outcome. Most weeks I would expect this not to be the case.

Delaying creates other problems... need to check in at different time than usual, and only a small few-hour window between waivers and needing to update lineups on Thursdays. Given it's weeknight, there are times when I don't have a chance to check in on lineups until post-kickoff). If it wasn't for Thursday games I'd be fine with the change... but it seems like we're creating a definite problem to prevent the "chance of a problem" IMO, and we have better ways of more selectively mitigating that risk.

Note this is not the draft order, that is based on season finishes, this is just for bragging rights.

Congrats Guru!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that your first RGK14 Championship Win?

No, I think I won one some time ago. Probably back when my core keepers included Aaron Rogers, Frank Gore, Ray Rice, Reggie Wayne, and Randall Cobb.

I tried drilling back into the archives, and I can't find a season when I won the playoffs in this league. There were several times I entered the playoffs as the #1 seed, but can't find any evidence of a playoff win.

So maybe this is the first time in this league after all. I guess being a #1 seed is overrated!

Amazing that if I had just scored 7 points less during the regular season, I'd be picking first next year instead of last.

Not that I'm complaining...
