0 Subject: 2018 RIFC AA league

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Aug 02, 2018, 16:16

Invitation emails will be sent out shortly. So far, we have 9 managers who have committed to play, with five slots left to fill. If needed, I will invite managers from the other RIFC leagues to take a second team. (I already have more than enough volunteers, so we should definitely end up with a full league of 14 teams.)

Some of you have played in an RIFC league before, but some have not. Myfantasyleague.com offers great flexibility, but can sometimes be confusing to newcomers. If you have questions on how to use the site, please ask. I am not managing a team in this league, but I will be serving as the commissioner.

Most league settings are already setup on the host site as carried over from last season. I have yet to review these to ensure that everything is properly set for 2018.

The first order of business is to get everyone registered at the hosting site. When you receive your invitation email, please follow the instructions to register.

So far, here are the nine AA managers:
Crabby Bills
Da Bomb
Donkey Hunters
Katie
Philly Busters Jr.
Promize
Slowhand
Taxman
Woody

Each of the RotoGuru Invitational Leagues uses a draft selection process to set the draft order for each draft. We are about to start that selection process.

For RIFC leagues, the draft order is a “banzai” format, which means that it is a back-and-forth snake format with one important exception: the third round order is the same as the order for rounds 2 and 4. So, the order goes as follows:

Round 1: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,..13, 14
Round 2: 14, 13, 12, 11, … 2, 1
Round 3: 14, 13, 12, 11, … 2, 1
Round 4: 14, 13, 12, 11, … 2, 1
Round 5 and subsequent odd numbered rounds: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,..13, 14
Round 6 and subsequent even numbered rounds: 14, 13, 12, 11, … 2, 1

This means that if you have the overall #1 pick in the draft, you will pick last in each of rounds 2, 3, and 4. And if you have the last pick in round #1, you will pick first in each of rounds 2-4.

The order of our selections will be set by random draw. The draft selection round will generally be untimed. However, if anyone takes more than 24 hours to make their selection, I’ll reserve the right to skip that selection and move on.

If you know of any access issues over the coming week, please post in this thread. And if you want to leave any instructions in advance (e.g., take the closest available pick to #1), you may do that in the thread, or by sending me an email.

I will post the order for the draft selection round on Saturday (tomorrow). The draft selection round will take place in this forum thread.

I still expect to start the actual draft sometime in the vicinity of August 24-26.

In past years, I've tended to start the AA draft earlier than the other leagues, since there are often some 1st-timers who may need extra time to become acclimated. But this year, there are only two first-timers, and most of the rest are long-timers. I think we should be able to move along at a decent pace. So I'll adopt the same timing standards that I believe the other leagues are also using.

Our draft will start on Saturday morning, August 25. I may actually activate it on Friday evening, in case someone wants to get a jump.

The clock will be eventually be set at 4 hours per pick, with a pause from midnight to 8am ET. The clock will be turned on at the end of the first round, but no later than Monday morning.

In each of the past several years, the RIFC draft has taken 6-9 days. At that pace, we should be finished by Labor Day (Sept. 3) or earlier. Assume that we'll average three rounds per day. Early rounds tend to be a bit slower than the later rounds.

Starting last year, I implemented some additional time limits to attempt to coax habitually slow drafters into a better flow. I think it helped. Here is the framework:

We establish a point system. If you timeout (i.e., you don’t make your pick before your allotted time expires), you accumulate 2 points.

If you exceed three hours of clock time but don’t timeout (the clock will initially be set at 4 hours), you accumulate 1 point.

Points will only be assigned after the first round, which is generally an untimed round anyway.

If you accumulate 2 points in total (either one timeout or two close calls), your clock time is reduced to 3 hours per pick for the remainder of the draft. That means your next timeout would be at 3 hours.

If you accumulate 4 points in total, your clock is shortened to two hours. At 6 points, your clock is shortened to one hour. That’s the ultimate limit.
Commissioners will need to monitor this, and will have the discretion to defer penalties if they believe the draft is moving OK and the time delays haven’t been too aggravating (or if the offending drafter has a good story.) Commissioners will also need to enforce the shorter clocks, since the system won’t be able to handle different time limits for each manager.

Hopefully, by adding some incentives to avoid multiple lengthy delays, the penalties won’t have to be enforced. (I did have to enforce a few times last year.)

Starting in 2015, I made the following offer to all RIFC leagues. This adjustment applies only to players injured in preseason week #3. We'll "protect" a team who drafts a player before his week #3 game and who is injured in that game. If you are in that situation, you'll have a limited time to make a substitute pick - but only from the player pool still remaining.

So, for example, if Tim Tebow is drafted by Team X prior to his game on Aug 25, and Tebow is injured in that game, then Team X can jettison Tebow and substitute any other player who is still in the undrafted pool at the time of the jettison. This, however, must be done by the end of Monday, August 27.

While this obviously isn't complete insurance, it is designed to keep the draft moving during that first weekend. And it's certainly better than being stuck with an eventual free agent to replace an early draft pick. Hopefully, this situation will never come into play.

Here are some guidelines for executing your draft picks.
(These are copied from prior year's threads. Please let me know if I have misspecified anything)

1. "My Draft List" - Under the "For Owners" menu (at the top), there is an item called My Draft List. You can think of this as your personal pre-ranking of players if you wish, although it has one important operational impact. If your 4-hour clock expires, then your pick will be automatically selected as the top name on your "My Draft List". Only if that list is empty will your pick be skipped. (More on this in a moment.)

2. "Pre-Draft Pick" list - You access this through "For owners->Draft"
These are the equivalent of the Drafttime.com "queue", with several important distinctions:
There is a separate list/queue for each round, and they do not carry over, and
If there is a name in your queue, that player will be immediately selected when it is your turn to draft. The only way to turn off a round-specific queue is to empty it. Therefore, it is important to keep your queues empty unless you are sure that they should be used. If you expect to want to load & unload your queue frequently (similar to turning it on or off), then you should probably keep a list of players in "My Draft list", as you can quickly pull up that short list to add players to any queue.

Of course, if you have players in "My Draft List", then you are also subject to having those players selected if you should time-out. Typically, that shouldn't be a problem, as timing-out should be a rare occurrence.

If you want to keep players loaded in "My Draft List" and you don't want to risk the top name being selected automatically upon timeout, then I suggest putting a "placeholder" player at the top of your list - preferably someone who is retired, or injured, or clearly not a viable pick. We can come up with specific placeholder options, if needed. If you time-out and a placeholder player is automatically selected for you, then you can have the commish replace that player with a real pick when you are available.

Note that because queued picks are automatically processed, there is no role tantamount to a designated picker. As commissioner, I can enter a pick on anyone’s behalf. Other than that, you – or anyone else with access to your MFL password – will be the only one who can directly enter a pick.

If your pick times out and is skipped, only the commissioner can insert a pick afterwards. If this happens to you, please send your make-up pick to me by email or text message. You can post here as well - but do not rely on this thread as the primary means of communication for a make-up pick.

If any of these instructions are unclear, please ask. And if anything is incorrect, please alert!

Draft starts tomorrow.

In preparation, please be sure that you have your automatic alerts set as you want. At a minimum, you will want the system to alert you when it is your turn to pick, but there are other options (like alerting every time a pick is made).

To set this up, go to For Owners=>Franchise Setup.

Click on the "Contact info" link and then check off all of the events you want to be notified of (by email). Be sure to save your settings (at the bottom) when completed.

For text alerts, click on the wireless link and setup your cell number and carrier, as well as the checkbox to send a validation text. Also select the events that you want to be alerted for by text. Make sure to enter your validation code after you receive it, and (of course), save your settings.

I am waiving the clock penalty (see post 29) for Woody's timeout on pick 7.14 for the following reasons:

1. He was out of cell coverage and had left a queue. It is just unfortunate that the queue went empty. His queue for the following pick at 8.01 was successful.

2. The draft is proceeding at a good pace.

The draft has ended.

I set up the waiver processing. We will be using a blind bidding system each week. All unrostered players will be subject to a blind bidding process each Wednesday at 7pm ET. Each team will have $100 to spend on waiver claims over the course of the season. Once waivers have been run each week, players who have cleared waivers will be available first come, first served (at no waiver cost). I realize that, for some of you, this will be your first experience using blind bidding.

Blind bid waivers will take place at three times each week:
Wed at 7pm ET
Thurs at 7:30pm ET
Sun at 8am ET

The Wednesday bidding will be for all unrostered players, just as in past years. The Thursday and Sunday bidding will only be for players dropped during the week. A dropped player will be eligible for the first blind bidding that occurs 24 hours after the time of drop. So, for example, a player dropped during Wednesday blind bidding should be subject to the Thursday night bidding. All other players dropped by 8am Saturday will be subject to the Sunday morning bidding. Any player dropped after 8am Saturday will be locked until the next week.

There will be a three hour lockout period after the Wednesday bidding. The purpose is to allow time to review and correct any potential errors in the blind bid processing. FCFS (first come, first served) free agent pickups begin at 10pm Wednesday, and continue through each player's game time.

For consistency, I set up the post-draft bidding on the same schedule: Wed/Thu/Sun. Hopefully, this will allow people to get comfortable with the sequence of events. It will also give us an opportunity to make sure everything works as expected.

Everyone gets $100 blind bid dollars to start the season. Bids must be made in integer increments. Once the season starts, blind bid ties will be broken in reverse order of standings (win%, then points, then HTH). Prior to week #1, ties are broken based on the reverse of draft selection round order. I have a custom waiver order set with that order. That custom order will be deleted after the first weekend, so that it is not used for any subsequent bid tiebreakers.

Here is the league calendar:http://www71.myfantasyleague.com/2018/options?L=67277&O=123

I'll write up more instructions for submitting bids shortly. Meanwhile, if you have any questions, feel free to post them here.

Here is a good FAQ summary of blind bidding, and how it is implemented on the MFL system:

We use a conditional approach, so bids need to be assembled into groups. Once an award is made from a given group, the remainder of that group is discarded from further consideration. So if you are looking to add more than one player, you'll need to enter your bids in more than one group.

As a simple example, suppose you want to drop Tim Tebow to add a different QB. You also have Alfred Newman, and want to drop him to add a LB.

Use the Add/Drops link to submit your bids.

For group 1, you could set up the following:
Add Johnny Manziel for $1, drop Tim Tebow
Add Brett Favre for $1, drop Tim Tebow

Then in a separate group 2, you could have:
Add Joe Biden, LB, for $2, drop Alfred Newman
Add Spiro Agnew for $1, drop Alfred Newman
Add George Bush for $1, drop Alfred Newman

If no one else has bid more than $1 for Johnny Manziel, you would get him, and the claim for Brett Favre would be ignored. If Manziel was claimed by someone for more than $1, then the Favre bid would be evaluated.

Separately, the group 2 claims would be evaluated - from top to bottom.

So, at the end of the bidding process, you might have at most one new QB and one new LB - if at least one bid in each group was sufficient. If no bids in a group are for sufficient $, then nothing will happen in that group.

Remember that during weeks with byes, you may start only one RB, substituting an extra receiver. The system has now been set to allow this.

I made a mistake this morning. I dropped Gore instead of Morris in a slumber filled add/drop frenzy. I resubmitted. Is there a way to reverse?

In the future, if anyone needs a system intervention from the commish (such as this), please send me an email at davehall@rotoguru2.com.

That's much more reliable than posting here.

Just noticed that the close match up I had originally lost got reversed. Been on the other end of those.

This is the final week with byes. Starting week #13, two RBs will again be required in each starting lineup.

The calendar for playoff weeks is slightly different than for the regular season.

1. No add/drop transactions will be allowed until at least 3pm on Tuesday. This includes submitting blind bid claims. The purpose is to allow the commissioner to get the playoffs properly seeded and to ensure that teams not active in the Championship bracket are properly excluded from further add/drop transactions.

2. There will be no blind bidding on Wednesday.

3. The first blind bidding will take place on 3pm ET on Thursday. This is so that all stats corrections can be processed on Thursday morning before any bids are processed - just in case a scoring adjustment results in a change in the previous week's game outcomes.

4. FCFS free agent pickups will begin at 6pm ET Thursday. Again, only teams still active in the Championship bracket may make add/drop transactions.

The schedule for the balance of the week will proceed as normal.

Playoff brackets have now been seeded. Remember that six teams advance based on W/L record, and the two remaining teams with the most points get the last two spots. Seeding for 1-4 is based on standings, seeding for 5-8 is based on points.

The second round of the consolation bracket may be adjusted after round 1. Highest scoring losing team in round 1 will advance, and matchups will be reset to prevent a duplicate matchup, if needed.

Blind bid dollars have been adjusted for teams in the top bracket. #1 seeded team gets an extra $16, #2 seed gets $14, etc.

Blind bid tiebreaker favors the team with the better seed during the playoffs.

Team not in the championship brackets have locked rosters.

Hopefully I did everything correctly!
