0 Subject: Gurupie League (24 Teams) Trade Banter

Posted by: Ref
- [28045169] Wed, Sep 04, 2002, 17:05

I've been offered even more trades this afternoon. Most centers around the Bears Defense. I picked them high for a reason and can't give them up--esp for what some of you are asking. I countered a couple of them. I have 2 TEs that I've sometimes offered.

Lately, though, I've gotten a couple offers for Ike Hilliard. Even though I drafted him pretty high, I realize you have to give something to get something. So far those offers for Hillard are good offers, but are not helping my team. I could give up Hilliard, but am looking for a player or two in return. Possibily I package a TE with him. I'm looking for another Kicker and a RB or solid QB that I can use as a backup.

Seeing as the trade activity is quite high I've sent out my emails regarding my 3 way trade. Seems like if you snooze you might lose in this league. I learned that the hard way on the first round of waivers, I've never seen a league where WW priority meant so much!

Same here CP. I just put out an offer--dang I don't even know who the owner was--it's so BIG--don't know if it will go through--it's even harder to do a multiplayer trade with such a short bench.

I'll check my email.

I've had 7 trades come in and I think I've sent out 6 offers (including some counters). Several of them involve the same player(s) so I guess first one that accepts gets the gusto. Some of them are very fair and I am losing on projected points but gives me some backups that I'll need. DANGIT, I better check bye weeks before any of those get accepted...

There have been some questions on the waiver process CBS uses and that our league will be using, so let me summarize.

It was important to have an orderely waiver process because of the 24 teams involved. I didn't want to make free agent pick ups a "race to the computer" While I can't say I think CBS' waiver process is perfect, here goes my explanantion of the procedure:

The waiver process was first addressed here in post #63

It was futher referenced in the Final Rules here
in post #5 section VI

Here a few quick FAQs:

Q. Does waiver position remain the same if I don't use a waiver each week?
A. NO, CBS resets the waiver order each week based on the reverse order of W/L record. It's possible to be #1 this week and be #20 the next week even without using a waiver claim.

Q. How long is a player on waivers?
A. (I believe) until midnight of the day after he was released.

Q. When can I add new players to my team after the NFL week? (IE for week #2)
A. All unsigned players are frozen once the first game of the week begins. All unsigned players are then placed on waivers afer the last game of the NFL week until midnight of the day after. I assume that means that unsigned players will be on waivers from Tuesday morning until Tuesday at midnight (at which time the waiver program will be run by CBS). I don't think any waivers claims can even be processed on Sunday for example. Tthe site will tell you "error"

Now, the above examples are for illustration purposes and are based on my understanding of the process. Ultimately, this thing is on "automatic pilot" so humans don't unfairly mess with the system! Here is CBS' official explanation of the process. If you see anything contradictory here to what I explained, keep in mind these rules are literal....
************************************************

Overview
In order to provide an equal opportunity for all owners to add players to their roster that are new to the free agent pool, a Waiver process can be implemented. Owners' requests to add players on waivers to their roster are not executed immediately, but are put in a pending status. This allows multiple teams to request the same players. Late Monday night, after standings are updated, Commissioner.COM will generate a Waiver Ranking based on league standings. The team with the worst record will have the highest waiver rank. Late Tuesday night the first Waiver Process of the week will be run, executing the pending requests in Waiver Rank order. When a transaction is made during the Waiver Process, the team's rank is set to last and everyone elses rank moves up one.

Waiver Schedule
Late Monday night standings will be updated and the initial waiver ranking for the week is determined. Starting Tuesday night, the waiver process will run each night of the week until a game is played. For the majority of weeks, where the first game is Sunday, waivers will run Tuesday night through Saturday night. If there is a Saturday game, waivers will run Tuesday night through Friday night. If there is a Thursday game, waivers will only run Tuesday night and Wednesday night for that week.

Conditions for Waivers
NFL Players are placed on waivers under the following circumstances:

A player is released during a waiver process: A player released during a waiver process is on waivers until the next waiver process. Example: An owner requests Player A on waivers and drops Player B. This request is pended until the waiver process runs. During the waiver process, the owner is awarded Player A, and Player B is released from the roster and placed on waivers until the next waiver process.

A player is released during a free agent acquisition: Requests for player's not on waivers are not pended. The player dropped in a free-agent transaction (i.e., non-waiver) is placed on waivers for at least 24 hours. If a waiver process runs prior to 24 hours the player will remain on waivers until the following waivers process. Example: An owner drops a player on Wednesday afternoon in order to pick up a free agent. The player dropped remains on waivers until Thursday night's waiver process.

All Free Agents as of Monday night: When the standings are updated after Monday Night Football, the initial waiver ranking for the week is determined and all free agents are put on waivers for the first day of waiver claims.

Waiver Rank
On Monday night the initial waiver rank for each team is determined based on standings. The team lowest in the standings receives the highest waiver rank. The criteria for determining the team lowest in the standings varies based on the type of league.

Points-based
1. Lowest in YTD standings
2. Commissioner Discretion (see Special Note below for Commissioner users)

Head-to-head
1. Worst Won/Lost Record
2. Least Points Scored YTD
3. Most Points Scored Against YTD

During a waiver process, pending transactions are processed in an order determined by each team's waiver rank. The team with the highest waiver rank will get its first requested player. If that team's highest pending transaction can't be executed because another team has the requested player, the transaction gets deleted and the team's next transaction, if one exists, is then executed. When a team gets a requested player, the team's waiver rank is dropped to the end and every other team moves up one and the process is continued.

If a team doesn't have any pending transactions because all players requested were taken by other teams, or the owner simply didn't request any players, the team's turn is skipped but the waiver rank is not dropped. If a team has the hightest waiver rank after Monday night and doesn't request any players for Tuesday night's waiver process, that team will still have the highest rank for the next process. The waiver rank for all teams at the end of one waiver process will be the starting rank for the next process, excluding the Tuesday night process when the waiver rank is reset based on standings.

Pre-Season
CBS SportsLine.com Fantasy Football 2002 and Football Commissioner products both support a pre-season waiver's process. For Fantasy Football 2002 players, the first waiver process will be run the second night after your draft, time permitting, and the initial waiver rank will be based on reverse draft order. For the Commissioner product, once the automated waivers process is activated, waivers will run nightly until the first week of the season.

Making a Waivers Claim
If you want to drop a player and pick up a player off of waivers follow these steps:

Lets say you have a player that you want to drop (player A) and several players that you would like to add (players A and B), depending on their availability when your turn comes up. If player B is not available you would like to pick up player C. In order to accomplish this you would submit two Add/Drop requests:

Drop player A, Add player B, and
Drop player A, Add player C.

Lets say your turn comes up and player B has already been picked up off waivers by another team. A request can not be executed if either the add or drop player is not available. Requests will be skipped until the first valid roster move is found. In this case, your second request would be executed and you would get player C (provided he is not also already picked up off waivers).

The same is true in the reverse. If you dropped player A and added player B, then during your next round of waiver selections it will skip over the second waiver request involving Player A and go down your list to see if you have any other waiver requests.

Note: Free agents are available on a first-come, first-served basis; they can be picked up at any time. If a player is dropped from a roster and he clears the waiver process without being picked up, he then becomes a free agent, and can be picked up at any time.

Now, that being said, I read carefully this clause from the CBS manual and I try to interpret:

All Free Agents as of Monday night: When the standings are updated after Monday Night Football, the initial waiver ranking for the week is determined and all free agents are put on waivers for the first day of waiver claims.

It sounds to me that you might be able to get a free agent on Saturday or Sunday morning! I'm going to e-mail CBS and ask them to clarify, but in case I can't clairify, I'm going to take a stance:

If the site allows for a free agent grab on Sunday before or Monday before MNF is over, then it will be legal. We are going to let the site auto pilot this function. I hate to put it this way, but I'd rather say I'll delagate to how the site operates than to have to go back on my (mis)interpretaion of the rules.

I talked to Ref about this earlier, and I think the confusion arises from the fact that nothing in the CBS rules states that unsigned players are "frozen" after the start of the first game of the week as had been assumed. There are no waivers processed on Sunday or Monday nights, so guys released anytime Saturday will remain on waivers until the following waivers process (on Tuesday), however players who are free agents as of Sunday AM presumably remain free agents until Monday night since nothing in the rules states otherwise. I'm glad you're emailing them though... maybe they just forgot to omit the freezing of free agents over the weekend from the rules.

Doug, that's not what I told you my understanding was. I told you that all free agents will be changed to waivers status when the first game starts. And they won't be placed on teams until after midnight the day after (Tuesday) the games are complete.

Sorry if I misstated that... placed on waivers, frozen, the difference is minor... only difference is whether you have to wait until Monday night to submit the claim, but either way it's not processed until midnight Tuesday. But yes, I should have said "placed on waivers".

I think we have an answer to waivers processes:

I just tried to add a player (just for fun) and it will not give me the "pick up this player" button.

I'm not sure if waiver claims from earlier today (I have one in) will be processed or not. I think they will as long as the request was submited prior to 8:30 EST - kickoff.

Please review your scores. If you find any scoring
errors, they will probably be corrected with the nex
stat run (After MNF). You can go ahead and e-mail them
to me if you wish, so I can add them to the list of
problems I am e-mailing CBS about.....

I have found in the past that CBS sometimes misses some
D touchdowns and/or fumble recoveries in the first
stat run (last night).

For example, it missed giving (my team) 6 points for
MIA D fumble recovery TD.

I'm sure it will "catch up" tomorrow. If it doesn't, I
have the ability to adjust scores maually.

Actually, I thought ahead on this one. Here is the clause in the rules.

XIII Stats Source

CBS Sportsline.com will be the official source for stats to settle any scoring discrepancies. My previous interaction with this site has been positive, but here are a couple of things to note. 1) The site has a “live” scoring feature. Don’t take this literally. This scoring is unofficial. 2) From time to time the NFL reviews a play and changes a stat. In my experience with CBS they pick up on the changes within a day or two and make the correction automatically. If you find a scoring error, you must report it to me before the next week’s roster freeze to investigate. I have the ability to manually override scores if necessary. I will however not do it once the next week’s freeze date has passed.

FYI- CBS getw their stats feed from NFL.com (I believe). I have found in the past that it is RARE that stats don't get corrected by Tuesday morning. Last year, I made ZERO adjustments.

But, here is an example of what thye can miss ( clipped from CBS which gets infor from NFL.com ):

TD Trent Gamble, 0 Yd fumble return (Olindo Mare kick is good), 14:46.

Doesn't seem to be a field for D TD's in the NFL.com stats that I can see. They did seem to capture the game winning Int. TD by James Allen for NO. Are we sure they are using NFL.com? Espn.com seems to have a field for Int/TD by D but not for fumble/TD by D. Maybe the glitch will occur for any D fumble/TD?

The only really odd thing in my scores is that it shows Warrick Dunn with 20.799999999999997 points (literally, I cut and pasted it). It just makes the table get all screwy because of the size of that field, but it's just a display issue. (note: my total points are listed as 90.10000000000001). Also, the standings page lists me with 83.8 "points for" instead of 90.1. Probably the standings page just hasn't been updated yet... I'll repost Tuesday night if it still seems off.

Here is the response I received from CBS RE: the "live" stats from yesterday (or the lack thereof):

I would like to apologize for any technical errors which you may have
encountered on opening Sunday of the fantasy football season. One of
the primary causes of the negativity which you may have experienced was a
corruption of the live statistical data feed. The corrupted file feed
basically rendered LIVE SCORING into an inaccurate state, and created
inaccessible pages within some leagues. We were able to identify and
resolve the issues prior to the completion of the NFL games on Sunday.
After working through the night, I'm confident that these problems are now
a thing of the past.

We have input safeguards to prevent reoccurrence of the problem.
Please log into your site this evening and confirm all is well within your
league . If not, after tonight's game, reply to this note with what you
are experiencing and we will provide maximum effort to resolve your
unique issue.

Humm, just seems to be a little lopsided (IMO), considering this is a keep league and you can keep 9 players right?

A second round draft pick isn't that weighted, when 24 teams have keepers.

THK, let it go. You wouldn't be upset if you feel you got the better of the trade. Just because you feel it's not fair, it doesn't mean it was bad for the league or that they colluded. Remember if you read the rules and you believe it's not fair and others thought so as well, we'd have called for a commissioner's vote then if the decision stood, we'd have called for a league-wide vote on it. You are the only one that has (and continues) to raise questions on it. Just because it may seem more favorable to one side doesn't mean it will turn out to be a bad trade. And frankly AP10 will not walk to the title. There are several teams like myself that are 2-0.

Let's see what this apparant lopsided trade has produced so far.

Week 1 (Manning/Price vs. Brunell/Garner) (29-49)
Week 2 (Manning/Price vs. Brunell/Garner) (41-39)

Total: 70-88

So far it looks pretty even. Also, if the Raider coach wasn't an absolute idiot, Garner would have had over 20 points this week and I wouldn't have lost by 4 friggin' yards. The fact that he wants to make the Raiders offense The Terry Kirby Show was something that I wasn't aware of before the trade. Seems weird that Garner is getting the same amount of touches when he's gone over 100 all purpose yards in his first 2 games. Both in which he only got around 1 touch after the 3rd quarter. If I were Garner I'd be fuming right now. He's looking like Barry Sanders and the coach isn't giving him any recognition for his great play. The Raiders whole offense is a joke and if they continue to run it in that manner they will get their asses handed to them by good team. I could see if Wheatley and Garner were splitting carries but TERRY KIRBY. What a joke.

They should have scored over 40 points last night if they had run the ball in the redzone. Instead 2 picks kept them off the board. Hopefully they will learn and Garner will benefit in the upcoming weeks.

Again, I will move one of my WR (possibly 2 if I get back enough) for 2 of the following types of players: QB, TE, K. All of my WR are potential keepers. 2 rookies Javon Walker and Derrius Thompson are both starters. Burress is also a starter. Hilliard has also done well. I would only need the QB for one week--as I would for the TE and K. However, for the kinds of players that I would be giving, I would need a potential upgrade starter for my TE or K. Make the deal realistic as we know my players would likely outpoint any of the players offered to me but I need to score in other areas as well.

I've got Jones and Dunn at RB and Qadry and Keyshawn at WR... in this league these guys will all do nicely given the difficulty of filling that second flex spot. If anyone is looking to add depth, I'm open to moving a 2-for-1 (or throw in a scrub to make it 2-for-2) in order to improve my quality v quantity. The player you offer needs to at least be in the ballpark of what I can expect from my 2 players combined (not exactly even, but be realistic... and keep in mind that Keyshawn has WAY underperformed so far this year). I don't want to blanket 23 owners with offers, so I'm posting the idea here. If you are weak in your second flex spot, you might be able to improve your numbers by giving up 1 great player in exchange for 2 good ones. It's better than constant zeros (or near- zeros) from that second flex spot.

To anyone that thinks I will run away with this title...

There is a very good chance I will start the season 1-2. A poor performance one week and injuries the next can cause major problems. Nothing is a drop in the bag, especially when you include 24 gurupies. It'll be a fight to the finish, and while I expect to be in the mix at the end, a drop in the bag it isnt.

Do you have a K or D on bye week? This could mean the difference between you winning and losing! Why not trade me a crappy WR that is going to sit on your bench anyway?

I am in the saw boat as AP10. Carr has a bye wk 5 and I flat out want a backup QB. Obviously I can't trade Carr, and Wienke won't do you any good at QB. So if you have an access QB, or you see something you like on my team offer it up so I can get a starter and a backup.

Thanks,
Minnesota Vikings

To All Owners: Cox Cable, my Internet provider is doing construction underground in my area this weekend. I am already out of service at home and have no idea if I will have partial or any access at all to the Internet between now and - >>> ????

If any questions arise, please direct them to CCRider or Ref. Their e-mails can be found in the "owners" tab at the site. BOL this weekend.

Thanks PN. Done deal. And thanks, Commish, for putting this through so quickly.

RFS: I've just found that Santana Moss has been downgraded to "doubtful" on the official injury list for the NFL. How do I move him to "injured" to pick up a replacement?

PD. I am moving S. Moss to Team DL for you right now, in a few minutes you can simply log in and get a replacement via free agency (or trade).

Oakland Raiders manager here with SFO defense on the trading block. In addition to probably being an upgrade over your current defenses, they'll have the added advantage of having already served their bye week so that you can start them every week the rest of the season.

I'm open to multi-player trades... getting a crappy D in return and upgrading at another position is an option but not a necessity. Main areas I'm looking to upgrade are RB/WR. Also would consider TE or backup QB, but really only interested in someone I'm actually going to reasonably be able to start... not "if" some other player goes down or someone you "think" has the potential to develop into a starter.

My advice would be to make an offer yourself. If you wait for the offer to come to you, you may be left out in the cold.

If anyone is going to be without a TE this week I have Matt Schobel who I would trade perhaps pakaged with another player (Tai Streets, Peter Warrick, William Green).

Not sure if anyone is interested but I thought I'd let it be known.

Green Bay: It seems Shayne Graham was in the CBS data base twice. This player was picked up by Houston last week. Since the same player can't be on two teams, I had to reverse your pick up.

#1) I have e-mailed CBS about the problem.
#2) I added Robinson back to your team
#3) Sorry for the glitch.

To everyone else: DON'T PICK UP SHAYNE GRAHAM, THE MOVE WILL BE REVERSED!

santana Moss is listed as probable ths week. You have to drop a player and take him back or cut Moss.

Please let me know what you want to do. If you do nothing by Sunday morning games, Moss will be cut from your team.

Live Chat

Let's talk some trash on Live Chat. Maybe if we get on there during the games we can get more than 1 or 2 on there at a time. With 24 teams I figure at least a quarter of us can be on there at any one time if we try and meet during the games.

I'd like a formal investigation into why everyone feels that they should have theyre season high weeks against me. This is getting ridiculous!....456 Points Against, means on average people are scoring 90+ points against me on any given week.

While one of our fearless commish's only gets around 55 pts scored against him on average any week;)

Until the past two weeks, I had the most Points Against. In fact, the weeks I was beated I had over 82 pts. The way my players have been scoring it will take well over 100, maybe even 120 for some weeks to beat me. I'd be more bragadocious, but I see my bye weeks coming up and I know the difference from the top and bottom are only a couple key injuries away.

Seattle's pickup of Shayne Graham has been reversed. Further I moved this Graham to team DL since he is already owned by Houston and he is listed twice for some odd reason. Your drop, Wiley was added back to your team. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for the many offers! Most of the offers have been for one of my WR. Obviously I don't want to part with them--but today I get offers for studious managers trying to get one for a QB. All of my WR start for their respective teams. I have put out a couple offers to 2 managers, but if those fail I have a fallback plan. You know it's a fun league when people have awareness of what's going on in the NFL and the game. Thanks everyone!

Wow! What a game Ref, it doesnt get much closer than that. I did the math to ensure victory and it appears I got it. Its ashame that the top 2 power teams (going into last week) couldnt of had all of their players. I didnt have a D or Antowain Smith, you didnt have Tiki, Toomer & lost Fiedler. Anyways, good game, I think I needed that victory more than you did.

Yes, you read that correct. The game was decided by 0.08 pts. It doesnt get much closer than that. One extra receiving or rushing yard changes the outcome. Wow.

AP10, I also did the math. It was tied after the game, but after they ran the final stats Tues. morning, they gave Manning an extra passing yard. Since everything is rounded to nearest tenth, the difference was the manning rounding up. I had it at 11.15, but you're right it was 11.16--so therefore .02 pts!!!! What kills me, is that I was up 1.3 pts or so with time running out and in garbage time manning threw for a ton of yards, including a 13 yard pass to Edge as time expired. Too bad Pitt couldn't have gotten that final first down to run out the clock. Getting beat stinks, but if I'm gonna get beat, I'd rather get blown out. I have a pretty darn good team and I have two losses now. One by like 4 pts and one by officially .1 pts. Both times I could have started a different player and won. This week, I tried to get to the computer (was on the road) in time to start engram over davis. I thought later--oh well it was only .3 pts difference--but that was the difference. Great game AP10. These are the kinds of games that are fun--just hope I win next time ;) (especially when people are getting wins with 37 total points!!!). Nice graph too!

Promize, you have the ability to call for a commissioner vote and commissioners can even call for a league vote. But you have to do it before any games are played so speak up if there is something you dislike. Also do it on the site or via e-mail as most of the league uses the CBS message board or e-mail.
