EH has 6 picks, in my trade with him, I was assuming that I would obtain his final pick therefore allowing both of us to have 5 picks apiece, rather than him having 5 picks + 1 worthless pick and me having 4 and not a full roster.

I could have swore that somebody told me that just because picks were traded to have some teams in excess of 5 that I would not automatically get their last pick...However, I would have to pick up the players I need in the FA pool. Is this correct or do I obtain the excess picks of the 2 teams I traded with?

TaRhEElKiD, It's not automatically assumed that you get the back end pick of your trading partner. It has to be written as part of the deal. Sorry.

If you have a trade, you have to both agree to everything in that trade, including draft picks. As we have said before, it is possible to not have enough or to have too many selections. You may not go OVER the max number of players and if you do not have enough picks, you have to wait until the waiver/fa period to fill your roster. This has been discussed numerous times. While I believe what you're saying to be true in your mind, we can't assume those things.

A10,

The bottom line is that it wasn't part of the trade. It is the equivalent to assuming that you will receive the player that another team waives when an uneven trade is made.

So basically there was NO rule prior to our trade in week 4 (?). I assumed what I feel is logical (and has happened in every other league I've been involved in) and you assumed that we would know that we had to clarify that.

EH, while your analagy is similar it isnt the same. The only way a person would make a lopsided trade, a 2 for 1, is if he felt he could grab a better player off of waiver/FA than the player that the other team would dump. Obviously, if I would've known that I wouldnt of received your last round selection, I would've stated it. Why in the world would I want to skip a pick and then wait until waivers and why would you even want the pick that is of no value to you. Obviously it makes no sense to me and doesnt seem logical...

Its only a last round selection so its not really a big deal but...

"So basically there was NO rule prior to our trade in week 4 (?)."

Actually, I think a pretty standard rule in fantasy leagues is that trades are limited to the explicit terms that have been agreed upon unless otherwise stated. Since "implied terms" have not been addressed, I'd have to think that there is no rule that would include them until agreed upon by the league.

is it slow like this every year? 24 Hr deadlines just seem to be a little too generous. 5 Hr deadlines, proxies, etc can speed up the process a great deal. For a 24-player league the discussion seems to be among the same few and the overall excitement is just not there. Especially since this day has been known for awhile.

penngray, this only our 2nd year. Last year we did a fast/live draft. I think we will do 6-9 picks per day in this format. There's alot of discussion via AIM and e-mail that isn't posted.

If needed Ref andI will speed up the time frames and we will be actively sending e-mails out to the next 2-3 owners due to pick.

Personally, I like the pace.

Yeah, I found the link on the website... it's the "Teams" link, duh. I was trying to go to the individual team pages (such as Denver Broncos) or else look for a link with the word "owner" or "manager" or whatever... I also searched through the 8 recent threads on this board related to this league looking for the word "coldwater" hoping to find an email addy somewhere... argh! I knew the info was out there, just couldn't find it in the most obvious place. =-)

A-train? haha ;-) That is going to be a running joke I am sure.

All-
Personally I think it is a disgrace that everyone knew when the draft would take place and we only got 3 picks done today. Oh well...I am going out of town on Sunday until the 15th, but I will have access to a computer so it shouldn't be a problem.

Just incase (since I don't want to be replaced)...if I am needed to pick and you haven't heard from me....feel free to call 1-405-401-0406! That is my cell phone and I should answer all the time. My first pick I am sure I will be in town for I hope. From then on I will be leaving queues and checking in periodically from NC!

About every 3 picks I will be sending out an e-mail as an "FYI" to the next 3 owners in line. It will usually include the deal line (24 hours after last pick) for the next guy up.

Hope the e-mails don't get annoying, but just want to be pro-active.

We could have done a slow draft on the site but the time limits were 120 mins. Also, no way to incorporate traded draft picks.

A-Train? How about Late-Train. It's gotten so bad that they signed Orlacker's kid brother out of a Div 3 school to compete at RB.

4 picks is about what I expected. With 24 teams, hopefully it speeds up, but there are always a few people that have rl issues who just can't get on the boards to select. I'm hoping by the time it gets close to my pick that I'll have a few names in a queue to select. So far only one name that I was kicking around is gone, but I knew he wouldn't fall to me anyhow.

If the picks become a problem, we WILL speed up the time. Currently we are giving people exactly 24 hrs (no matter the time) to select. Once we hit that time, the next person may select at any time. The skipped person may then select their pick at any time.

Rfs and I did a draft like this in another league and it was a 2 hr limit. Lots of guys got skipped. I remember how guys used to make 4 or 5 picks within a few mins at times trying to hurry up and get their guy before the skipped guys get a chance to pick. Then it would drag on again. I am not a fan of the slow draft, I get anxious. I'm a live draft person, but this is what will work for our league and traded draft picks. Otherwise, teams would have to select players for others and with only 90 to 120 secs, that is challenging.

I'm with you Ref. I have a few names in mind but doubt they will fall to me. Once it gets to within a reasonable number I'll work on my queue. It's much harder to rank prospects and backups than starters since alot of picking a new team is position dependent with everyone having about the same needs. A slow draft is the only way to go for this and a 24 hour time limit is fair to all. Unless one or two people "consistently" don't make their picks, then we should have no problem getting done in plenty of time.

How long do the real teams get to pick? I think around five minutes on the rotoguru boards would be the ideal way to do it. Not suggesting a change at this late date of course.

W. Dunn is available for teams needing RB help in this draft.

Obviously Dunn was a top-20 RB last year, despite claims that Duckett would hurt his value. No, I don't expect he has much upside left, but he isn't a risky pickup either... you know what you're getting, and you know he'll get PT. So especially if you're looking to make a run at the playoffs or even just improve your team's performance this year by adding a quality RB, then let's talk. I'm open to player and/or draft pick exchanges.

Ref, you just got a offer too good to pass up (which probably meant it was more than I should have offered). I really should have held out for Plaxico instead of Thompson, but I felt like making a move.

I decided not to keep Thompson because of his inconsistency. He may turn out to be a good WR for Miami, but I felt there was better options available. Time will tell. My main concern was QB, but I felt that by keeping both Kitna and Griese I could begin the year wtih Kitna as my starter, and play the odds that Griese will take over at some point in Miami.

Well, I still think Dunn will put up better numbers this year and I'm sad to see him go... I like him a lot. Plus RBs seem to be at a premium over WRs in this league, BUT I was thinking long-term, and I really like Andre Johnson's prospects in that regard. So while losing Dunn hurts my team a bit this year, I think it helps next year and beyond. Anyway, thanks for the feedback AP10/Ref... always nice to get complemented for making a move. I think A.Smith for Rogers was a very similar good move on AP10's behalf.

While I'm not exactly eager to breakup my wideout set of "Johnson & Johnson", I will put Keyshawn out there as someone I am willing to move for the right price.

Had two guys on my board when Doug took Andre, but then I got cold feet on the other receiver. After looking at several others and doing some research, Javon jumped out at me. I will have a bye week issue as it stands now, but it's not until week 8 so hopefully I can address it by then.

Not sure what to think if Blue Balls or Turley will check in on here. They are back to back. Blue Balls failed to get his keepers in and rfs had to personally get a hold of Turley to get his keepers. This could be a long wait for the next picks. We have emailed and we will email again now that they are up. They are in this league for a reason, so we're assuming they will make their picks within their time limits or have someone else pick for them.

Shouldnt the first round be the quickest? If the picks slow down from here on out, we're going to be pushing it close. To be honest, I have no problem checking in frequently to see if/when its my pick. But doing that every few hours for the next 30 days is going to get extremely old. No 5 round draft (10 rounds for a 12 team league) should last more than 2 weeks.

From other leagues I play in I can tell you Blue Balls really provides a roadblock in drafts. He has limited computer access or time or something and there is no use getting worked up wondering if he is going to pick in the next five minutes. He isn't. Still I am quite surprised he didn't pick when he posted on our Yahoo league board that he was about to. That does irritate. Perhaps he hasn't researched yet and felt he needed the full 24 hrs after all.

I expect as the draft nears the top of the order the draft will speed up and as it goes back near the back it will drag on forever.

OK, Unless I am mistaken (and will apologize in advance if I make one) the following people have NOT paid their league fees.

I'm also going to make a commissioner's decision that these people cannot participate in the prize pool. It's NOT fair for them to see the draft's development and decide if they want in/out when the rest of us had to commit our money before the draft started. Anyone on this list is going to get an e-mail from me and is in danger of being cut from the league.

Guys, I'm not trying to be a prick here, but the longer these payments drag out is the longer I have to track this stuff. I already have plenty to do as it is. Also, just as a courtesy to me, I PAID for the league and this money is a reimbursement to me. If you can't write a check and put it in the mail, I have doubts that you will be an active owner anyway.

Will there be any other punitive measures taken? I mean not posting keepers, being completely absent from discussion and missing a first round pick are not good signs for future activity in the league.

Contrary to popular belief, I have been paying attention, and I'm ready (well now...) to pick. Thanks a lot for the heads-up however!
And then he doesn't pick...wierd.

I will tell you I have decided his main problem is I believe he does not have internet access at home. He has a decent level of interest and ability, I think the reality of stealing computer time on other people's computers is killing his ability to cooperate with these drafts.

In order for this league to have the kind of level of excitement that rfs (and now myself) have envisioned, we need ACTIVE participation. That includes not only setting your lineup each week, but actively persuing opportunities in improving your team and responding to trade offers in a timely manner. We are extremely happy with how the managers in this league contribute to the overall toughness and integrity of this league. It only takes one owner to hurt that integrity though. While rfs brought Blue Balls into the league for a reason, it became apparent that we had to make this switch to retain our high standards. We brought Penngray into the league as a replacement for the KC team at the end of last year for the same reasons.

I think everyone understands that you are not expected to be on here 24/7, just do your part to contribute to the league by making your team as tough to beat as possible. We have bent over backwards to try to retain our members but we had to make this change. We hope further discussion about this move will not be needed.

I have a quick question (please forgive me if this is addressed in the rules)... if I draft a player this year who is listed at a given position, say, QB... and then the team that drafts him converts him into another position, say WR (such as the no-longer-a-football-player Eric Crouch), then next year if I "keep" him, will he have to be moved to his new position on my roster, or will he still be eligible at the position that I drafted him for? Or is it dependent on the website we use for the league each year (different sites sometimes assign individual players to different positions, or allow/disallow you from modifying positional assignments for your league, or even allow multiple positions for a given player, etc.). TIA!

I originally thought that the answer was a no brainer because in baseball it is all about position eligiblity. However, in football this is another animal because many players are on the active roster the entire year but never see a snap. Therefore, if Byron Leftwich makes the Jaguars out of training camp but doesn't take a snap he still maintains his QB eligility. The question then becomes, if he plays another position but doesn't see the field as a QB does he lose his QB eligibilty all together.

I think that the answer would rely on the official depth chart. Seeing as each week a team MUST submit a list of their QBs (1st, 2nd and emergency) then I would think as long as the QB is still listed as one of the three in this group that he would retain his eligibility at this position.

I'd say that if a player retains eligibility on the official team website depth chart that he should retain it in our league.

Just a thought.

Sorry, I should say this.

In the previous year, if the player is listed as 1 of the 3 QBs for the eligibility requirement then he should be considered eligible for the following season at QB.

Holy smokes! Was on all day yesterday and we got nothing--then overnight everyone picks before me. Now the cupboard is bare. Back to the drawing board as I have no clue who to even look at. You guys are making this too difficult for me! Good job. I will put these players on the proper teams on the site then I'll start looking. Have a couple of meeting today, but hopefully I can get it done this afternoon.

Btw, Kordell Stewart is still at QB. Crouch would have been at whatever position he was listed at by his team I believe. We will deal with it when it comes up.

I would like to take one of those QB's off your hands...but I don't know what deal we could really work for one of them.

Let me know...

Doug,

I sent CBS an inquiry as to how they determine position eligibility. I'll give you an answer based on what they tell ne their procedures are.

In response to Doug in post 145, here is the answer I got from CBS:

Hi :

Players are listed at the position listed by the NFL...If they change
it we will change it...

Thank you for your business,
The Commissioners' Office
Commish Paul

So, that being said we are going to let the site take care of it. So, draft accordingly.

Thanks RFS... the only point that is still ambiguous to me is would they change a player's position mid-season, or only from one season to the next? Perhaps you can answer that based upon the context of the email you sent them? Anyway, at least now I know who's mercy I'm at. =-)

I got an additional clarification from CBS (sort of). They state that they will change a player position when the "NFL" does [even mid-season]. The did not identify their source for me. So, at this point the decision on player positions is that it will be controlled by CBS/website w/o commissioner adjustments.
