Begin the draft

No time limit (for now), but please advise on this discussion thread if you will be gone for long periods of time. (so others will not be sitting at their computer thinking it will be their turn any moment)

I'm baaaaack.

Good Gawd, I am so retarded. Restarting the computer fixes so many of the ills in life. I wonder if that could fix the wart on the end of my nose or the pot belly thing.

Ok draft is actually underway. Our mystery manager dejour is Challanger. Hopefully he will post me an e-mail so that I can add him to the e-mail list for any private conversations that might come up.

Thanks for the invite! I'm workin' on that email now. Been having troubles with my PC too, loading up RotoGuru specifically. Bewilder why, but trying to change settings to accommodate.

cc, doesn't seem to be an easy way, but if you want to you can always "View", "Source" from the explorer menu, find your players and paste into Excel, a couple of formulas to peel of the excess javascript and you have a printable list.

Sorry best i can think of for now.

Challenger - Welcome aboard! I've had an intermittant problem accessing Rotoguru.com since yesterday morning. It's effected my email retrieval as well as loading the html pages. I hope it's not the latest web/email worm wiggling around the net.

Interesting pick @ #3. Is the defensive scoring that high in TSN? Hmmmmmm.

CC - From a cursory look through, it appears you have to export the TSN rankings to print them.

Thanks deepsnapper!

A relief, in a way, to hear someone else is having the same troubles with RG. Maybe Guru, can give us some possible insight. Course I have been online having troubles with RG yet at the same time Dr. Doom uploads it just fine. My attempted fixes were eliminating some spyware software settings and emptying my cache files of 344mb of files. Maybe this will help.

Challanger - It's more than just you & I. Peter N snagged a new laptop to take to Texas Tech over the weekend and he's experienced timeouts trying to access the Guru's World Headquarters since Monday. I know because he's IM'ing me to find out if I can get in (like that'd help him).

Cleaning 355mb of cache files will help especially if you're disk size isn't the "jumbo" size. Have you thought of using the disk compression utility? Press all those ittey bitty bits of data back together where they belong? (;-Þ)

I'm ok on disk space - 10.5 gig left....now. The cache files were Temp Internet files which aren't needed anyway. I really should set a schedule to auto delete anyway, but then I wouldn't have all that fun. :)

As to my problem with RG access. Problem solved when I restarted computer. Must be some weird cookie coming via the RG address, but only selected machines appear to be troubled. It's probably good to restart machine on a regular basis, so it's a NBD. No Big Deal.

Ciff, If you need to send a que, I will be around.

Finally, I notice that Taxman, Guru, & one other (not me) will not be around Saturday. Just how many of us will be around Saturday? Ya know, it might save some time if everyone of ya send me your ques and I'll have this thing finished when you in no time. (Insert Vincent Price's evil laugh, a long one) Let me assure you, each team will have Hall of Fame caliber players on your team. Barry Sanders, OJ Simpson, John Hadl, Sammy Baugh, Roger the Dodger, Babe Ruth, Bullett Bob, Sweetness, Purple People Eaters...... May have to eliminate OJ though. He's to busy trying to find his ex-wifes murderer, on the golf course.

The early run on team defenses is interesting. I assume this tactic is similar to that often used for catchers in baseball, or centers in hoops, where the limited supply of quality options leads some to pick them ahead of their nominal ranking, especially since we each need 2 team defenses.

Still, it is surprising to see so many defenses go in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

Mean Joe Greene and the Steel Curtain. Lambert & Butkus and those piercing eyes staring you down. Sends shivers up me spine.

Wasn't Greene from N Texas State?

Until Barry Sanders came along, Bullet Bob Hayes was my favorite. If a cornerback blinked, Bob was past them on a fly pattern heading to the endzone with another catch...at least that's how my childhood memories plays it out in my head and I'm stickin' to it. :)

Challenger - Yes indeed Joe Greene played for NTSU - now Univerity of North Texas. The nickname of NTSU/UNT was/is the Mean Green and when Pittsburgh drafted him, some sportswriter up there picked up a bi-line that said that the "Mean Green" was going to stomp Southwest LSU's QB (not sure of the team) & took that to mean Joe was going to stomp the QB and the rest is history as far as the legend goes.

Joe tried to tell everyone they had it wrong, but it was too good a story and after a while, it took on a life of it's own. Success may have had something to do with that. It's a great story and Joe is/was a great alumni of the university and a great ambassador for football (and a heck of a guy by all accounts).

Sounds much like a fellow allumni,(I'm a BBA Accounting 1970 here) And I think the QB was Ferguson of Arkansas which won the game only because of hometown refereeing by something like 2 or 3 points @ 1968 or 69. Also drafted off that team was QB Steve Ramsey (Samuels High Sch.), WR Ronnie Shanklin and a OG by the Bears named Holland (I think) Not bad for a small school.

The database has no category for KR. I think that if you select somebody as a KR and he continues to have that as his principal role in his real team then you should not be able to switch that selection to a WR or RB at a later date. However this does not always work for example Delta O'Neal whose primary role is not a KR.
I guess we need a ruling.

Under the "Info" section, link "league rules", you will see Taxman has used his Commish privileges to adjust our league for kr, a extra wr, and various different scoring possibilites. Normally, if a wr/rb is set in his correct position, wr/rb, he still would receive kr points even though he's not in the kr slot and vice versa.

Can I have feed back about putting a clock on the draft. I propose the following become the rule at noon EST tomorrow Sunday the 23rd of August(TSN roster freeze time) My intent is to force managers to leave a que when they are not able to get to the boards every two hours between 11:00 AM EST and midnight EST.

I would like a 60 min to 90 min clock. If you do not make your own choice or leave a que to be entered for you in that time frame, then your selection is skipped. And the draft continues with the following manager. The pick is not forfeited, it is delayed. The (all) skipped picks of a specific manager can be made only at the time that manager is on the clock in a following round, and must be used (posted in the draft thread) labeled with the correct number (original round and slot that was skipped) before the pick of that manager in that later round. Any skipped pick not taken before a later round pick is posted must wait until the his next turn to pick.

In example Cliff is now up for pick # 9.07. Cliff fails to pick or leave a que that is entered for him timely. The pick is delayed and cannnot be taken at the earliest until Cliff picks again in round 10 in the 5th slot. He can draft the delayed pick 9.07 only if he labels it correctly and lists it before he executes his 10.05 pick. If the 10.05 pick is posted before posting the 9.07 pick, Cliff is not allowed to execute that pick until his turn in round 11, but only if posted before his round 11 pick. All skipped picks not taken by the end of the draft are forfeited.

Agree with PD's question.
If I have Tim Dwight as a WR, do I get his KR points, or do I have to have him as a KR to get those points.
Also, if I have him as a KR, do I get his WR points.

Question

Does a player receive points at more than 1 position:

Two answers:

1) I am in favor of that scenario and will not prohibit that result, and

2) I intend to let/allow/have TSN score this game because of the myriad possibilities of points. I will not rescore games and have made the election to not go back and rescore games.

For instance, Strayhan of Giants gets a sack, in my book that should be points to DL position for a sack, a tackle and to the defensive team for the sack. I believe that the same should hold true for a WR or DB that returns punts. No matter the position inserted for the game, points should be awarded for all categories in which points are awarded. That means a flea flicker to Manning would get Manning receiving yardage points.

On the re-scoring issue, I wisely (not so wise by him) begged The Computer Wizard (drum roll) the esteemed Dr Doom (we partnered in Tag Team in Hockey with a team called "The two things in life that are for sure" ) to serve in the Co/Asst Commissioner Role. If he has an idea on how to re-score per the above thoughts if TSN doesn't agree with us, I hope he will share it with us.

Comments...Dr Doom?

Reprint of post # 129 note change: clock = 90 minutes to pick.

And my interpretation of rule is that if you leave a que and the person it is left with falls asleep, whatever, and misses the time to post your pick, you get same results as if you just failed to leave a que and didn't timely pick.

I have 3 votes for and no votes against. If another manager besides Cliff, Matt or PD will join in approveing, the following will go into effect tomorrow at Noon EST

I've been going under these assumptions regarding scoring/eligibility:

1. A player accumulates points in all scoring categories, regardless of position. This is how TSN processes their standard game, and I would be very surprised if the roto scoring was any different.

2. A player who is eligible at more than one position can be used at either from week to week, but only for one position each week. Example: I could use Steve Smith at WR in week one, and at KR in week 2. As such, there is no need to declare a player's position when he is drafted.

TSN does! TSN has designated certain players "kr". I see no Qb's on the list. In turn a player who is not designated a "kr", you can not slot him there, just like in the Ultimate and basic games

TSN would have to list the player at the position to be eligible.

If I go to the TSN game site and ask it to list KRs, it produces a list of them. Steve Smith is one of them. If I list WRs, Steve Smith also appears on that list. Thus, I have been assuming that he is eligible for either position.

Taxman - I am willing to support the 90 minute draft clock with 2 provisos:

1. It should not go into effect until Monday. You only proposed this at 6pm today. Some people could conceivably time out tomorrow without even being aware of the change.

2. A skipped pick can be made up at any time. What is the purpose of delaying a skipped pick until the following round?

I do question whether this is necessary, however. We're into the 10th round after about 40 hours. Seems like we are making good progress without a clock. Maybe we should wait a few more days to see if we continue to make good time.

We never got a 4th confirmation vote (unless you count Guru's vote to approve only if amended) SO for the present, there is no clock

If anyone would like to pose the clock rule as amended by Dave, I would certainly institute it upon obtaining 5 votes for and after an adequate time was given to all for preparation of a que and getting a handle on personal schedules.

Suggestion to Guru's #2

2. A skipped pick can be made up at any time. What is the purpose of delaying a skipped pick until the following round?

When the skipped individual is back & ready to make their selection, he may not immediately go in front of whomever is already on the clock and make their selection. They must 1st notify their intentions to select, via the discussion thread, they are ready to make their selection and then they may proceed after whomever is on the clock has posted their selection(s). (Selection(s) refers mainly to Dr. Doom & Taxman, but we may want to include anyone kindly drafting for the individual next to them in draft order, Ex....Cliff & Roy. I don't think it's fair to split up their votes since mostly they won't be reviewing the discussion thread while on the clock. This portion open for debate, obviously)

Finally, Dr. Doom should have the right the put in his opinion before we change the rule. He should be back later this evening.

Just my $.02

Brooklyn is still up in round 12 - 12.08 is not a valid pick, Boston was 5.08. ;-)

Perm Dude - " Re: Ya queues ya lose:" only had those 4 names so I'm out of names. also & I mean also! - you're on the countdown clock in the Pol. draft and you know those guys. aaahh!

Goatlocker - my pleasure, I can handle a queue if need be. Your's was easy.

Taxman - 12.01 Dwight Feeney Who the heck is Feeney?? maybe Freeney, DL, Indy?? lol (maybe we should indicate player team & position on some of these "obscure" picks". ;-)

I also am agreeable to #162.

IMO, it isn't a hardship to whomever is on the clock if they're notified ahead of time (well, maybe some anxiety) and if it prevents someone from getting an assigned player they really didn't want) I don't think I've ever received a "computer" pick that I was satisfied with, not really or if the other option is to be skipped to another round, I'm all for jumping in when they return.

A pick mae in front of who's on the clock isn't going to kill their team (unless it's guru taking your D in round 11! (;-Þ)

Hrrrrmmpfff. Where does it say in the rule book that you have to be able to SPEL to play fantasy sports. Feeney Frebie Freeley Freeney, what ever (yes DL Colts) Thanks for the spell checker Deep Snipper :>)

New draft chart to be posted shortly. When you get your pick (or you can do it on the draft thread page run "FIND" in Explorer on "Edit" drop down table to see if that name is already drafted.

Brooklyn, your welcome! Even though I'm tracking the picks as we go on both Doom's sheet & mine, I still have to do a "find" each time to verify before I post. Besides, I couldn't believe we all must Boston.

Challenger, I like Brooklyn's strategy. I am going to start drafting more used (previously drafted) players. I can fill my roster in better that way. Someday we should invent a fantasy game that allows all players to be drafted twice. Wouldn't that be fun to score. (where is the doomster when you really need him)

I'm gone again. Back @ 7-8ish CST tonite

Taxman - It's probably time for a new discussion thread for the modem-challenged, but before someone does, I'm going to recommend that you start it Donny for continuities sake. It's easier to search out when 1 person starts them IMO.

And, If I could make 1 suggestion, could we tone down the yellow in the draft chart please?. The yellow comes through like a flashlight for some reason. Maybe it's just me, but light blue, green, grey, white, red, you get the picture is preferable, I'd even take pink! I'd laugh, but the spots in my eyes are so big I have to keep turning my head to type!
